Let's Talk Some More About Rachel Dolezal, Media

Some of the contractors that have helped OPM with managing internal data have had security issues of their own—including potentially giving foreign governments direct access to data long before the recent reported breaches. A consultant who did some work with a company contracted by OPM to manage personnel records for a number of agencies told Ars that he found the Unix systems administrator for the project "was in Argentina and his co-worker was physically located in the [People's Republic of China]. Both had direct access to every row of data in every database: they were root. Another team that worked with these databases had at its head two team members with PRC passports. I know that because I challenged them personally and revoked their privileges. From my perspective, OPM compromised this information more than three years ago and my take on the current breach is 'so what's new?'"

President Obama is standing by Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Director Katherine Archuleta despite a series of massive data breaches that have shaken the federal government, the White House said Wednesday.

"The president does have confidence that she is the right person for the job," spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters.

...

Earnest said updating OPM’s cyber defenses has been one of Archuleta's top priorities since she assumed her post in late 2013, but that is "obviously an ongoing process."

He said Archuleta and OPM Chief Information Officer Donna Seymour have cooperated as best as they can with a congressional inquiry into the hacks.

..

Archuleta and Seymour have been under fire since it was revealed that suspected Chinese hackers had made off with troves of federal workers’ data.

BS answer. In the real world, having all your systems on the same OS, language and rev is a dream. You're always having to hack to get data from one area to another.

The critical files could/should have been on a secure sub-system.

75 There has been a steep increase in the frequency with which I stop and look around and say to myself, "My God, did I really just read what I think I just read?"

In the case of the OPM hack, I've been saying that over and over.

Not least after reading how it came to light. Where an outside security software vendor came in to do a demo of their product to the federals, and a few minutes later said to their hosts, "Uh, you have massive intrusion fingerprints all through your systems."

That's bad enough. But consider that the Top Men who handle infosec for federal agencies apparently don't have any problem letting an outside vendor walk in to do a demo for them, and then allowing that outside vendor to load and run their code ON THE ACTUAL PRODUCTION NETWORK CONTAINING HIGHLY SENSITIVE DATA.

Holy mother of all shitstorms.

478 the chinese economy is built on graft and connections (kind like us now, i guess) and most immigrant chinese that made it to the US got here because they went to college and their families are connected -- that is, they know how to play the game.

This was a lot more true in the past, but still applies.

In the 90's forward, in tech, i have worked at several companies that had a few Chinese researchers. PhD's or Engineers who immigrated either as young children, or to go to school.

The ones I knew well, and there were a few, all had connections in China. This is in DC, NY, and CA. I found out early that they it was common to have chinese business cards. Not for the jobs they were doing in the US, but for side work. Not that it was work, but it was basically industrial espionage. They listed themselves in China as expert on certain technology, and there was some system in China, set up by government, to make contact with them if someone needed "help."
I believe that "help" meant stolen technology.

For the employee, it meant better connections for their extended families. This is big in China, since where you work, live, etc. are all based on connections. One guy had apartment in peking that he thought would be worth a lot one day if he could keep it. He had been in the US for 15 years, but still had that apartment.

I also assumed that Chinese working in military or gov. were also connected back home and doing the same stuff.

The consequences of this fiasco cannot be overstated. The Chinese can directly and effectively influence, if they don't already own outright, the political and probably a significant portion of the military leadership. 547 I keep saying this, and I might as well be shouting it into a hole in the ground: you would be shocked and horrified if you realized how bad government IT is at all levels. I work for the Marine Corps. I train users on SharePoint and help them develop their SharePoint sites, which is where they do all of their day-to-day work. And it sucks at every conceivable level. From the hardware, the servers, the network connections to the SharePoint site execution to the shared drives still limping along like a broken-legged mule to the email service that sometimes sends an email immediately and sometimes sends it a day or two later, from top to bottom it is a disgrace. It is the infrastructure of a third world banana republic. When I train users in Camp Pendleton, it takes five minutes for a page to load. Users in 29 Palms can't access their SharePoint sometimes for days at a time because the ONE server farm is in Quantico, Virginia, and no one can get their shit together to dispatch another server farm to California. They're credentialed out of half the useful features of SharePoint and there are, depending on the base, eight or ten hops between the server and the user. The version of IE on the Marine Corps network computers is no longer supported by Microsoft.

My command has 16,000 personnel. This is not a small operation.

A big part of the problem is that we are led by technological dinosaurs. We have guys in charge who still demand that their emails be printed out. The highest levels of leadership came into the command before Yahoo was a thing. Until they retire, there is no urgency to run like a 21st century organization; in fact, there's active resistance. Another part of the problem is bureaucracy. Even though everyone and their brother agrees that there really ought to be servers in California, and that the pipeline into North Carolina is too small for the number of users that use it, shit will never get done. It's like the I-95 beltway: always ten years behind the actual needs of the people using it. Remember Lindsey Graham saying he doesn't use email? THAT moron votes on net neutrality. That's the kind of moron we have making decisions about another server farm in California.

I completely and totally believe that the IRS IT lost, sincerely lost, Lois Lerner's emails. I have no doubt whatsoever that someone advising Hillary said "yeah, sure, make your own server!" I believe that no one at OPM had a second thought about outsourcing their IT to China. They DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER. This is endemic to the government at all levels. And that's not even the worst part! It's not just horrific that our government IT is that bad. The worst part is the American people do not give a shit. They don't hear about it, and if they do, they don't understand what it means, and if they do understand what it means, they don't care. Not until someone actually dies--a lot of someones actually die--will enough of them pay attention long enough to demand answers, and then they'll even have the gall to act outraged about it.

At the end of the day, all of this is on the American people, not the media, Ace. The American people are too distracted by shiny things to pay attention to the world around them. They don't have the character to hold people to any standard and they don't have the attention span to demand accountability. The only thing to do is ride this out to the bitter end and be ready to pick up the pieces.

On May 23, 2013, President Obama appointed Director Archuleta to lead
the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the agency responsible
for attracting and retaining an innovative, diverse and talented
workforce to make the Federal government a model employer for the 21st
century.

On November 4th, Archuleta was sworn in to begin her tenure as the
10th Director of OPM, and the first Latina to head this federal agency.

Director Archuleta began her career in public service as a teacher in
the Denver public school system. She left teaching to work as an aide
to Denver Mayor Federico Peña. When Mayor Peña became Secretary of
Transportation during the Clinton Administration, Archuleta continued
her public service as his Chief of Staff. Later, Peña was appointed to
head the Department of Energy and Archuleta served as a Senior Policy
Advisor in the Office of the Secretary.

After the Clinton Administration, she went back to local government
and became a Senior Policy Advisor to Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

Archuleta spent the first two years of the Obama Administration
serving as the Chief of Staff at the Department of Labor to Secretary
Hilda Solis.

As the Director of OPM, Archuleta is committed to building an
innovative and inclusive workforce that reflects the diversity of
America. As a long-time public servant, she is a champion of Federal
employees.

A lot of people died on 9/11.

The public sat up and paid attention. They demanded answers.

The federal government set up a commission to provide answers.

Stocking said commission with a bunch of hacks, retreads, retards, and individuals who had been in the loop on the decisions that let 9/11 happen.

The commission's eventual answer was, well, gosh, shit happens, sorry. Nothing to be done for it. No one's *fault*, of course. Shrug.

By that time, the public had forgotten all about wanting an answer anyway, and had gone back to their regular diet of television, pro sports and pop music.

590 Don't blame Nixon, he was leveraging them against the Russians. Posted by: Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest at June 17, 2015 06:45 PM

I DO blame Nixon for that dumb-shit move, and for a whole lot of other stuff, too.

He didn't need the Chicoms as "leverage" against the Russians (he was trying to suck up to them as well), he wanted to cozy up to Mao and strengthen his image as Teh Great International Statesman. It was as simple as that, and many of his subsequent defenders are imputing made-up motives for one of the stupidest things ever done by a president before Choom Boy came along.

Why? Because Republican, that's why. No one likes to admit the Democrats were right in going after Tricky Dick. Hell, even the Republican leadership finally decided he had to go, and sent a delegation to the White House to tell him so. Which is something today's Democrats haven't got the balls to do with their felonious little Tyrant-in-Chief.

592 @502...Jane, yep! However, after stoopidly going down staircase in new home last night without lights, and missing the last two stairs and whacking top of foot on oak floor (vs face plant through front door which would have been even more epic and maybe daid), I visited an ED in new town. Very nice, empty at 10:30pm!!! and quick care. AND I didn't have a much feared fracture of one of bazillion bones in foot...requiring podiatrist (horrors) visits and/or surgery or equally hideous crap. I felt such a relief of "no fracture" my blues sort of went poof. Today fence was completed in backyard and I was "supposed" to start my garden(s). Instead I am icing and elevating clubfoot. I am not sure when the elation of no fracture but foot still hurts and woe is me will set in (also, one son is coming for two week visit in two days and expecting me to be hiking. Oh, yay).

Anyway, this does suck, the entire administration of idiots beyond normal comprehension. And allowing the Chinese to know information. And having the head of dept say "nothing would have prevented it, yada."

I have been sooper depressed and not myself for weeks, due to move, due to blahs, due to a virus, due to world at large. I read that I can change my blahs by thanking God for three things each morning. Have tried that and it has helped. I am not sure if it will help you or if it is a temporary high from not having fracture....but my big question of the day is "What is a baboon whip?" Rachel is still amusing me and getting fired from stuff left and right. However, Ace is correct on this being a distraction from what is an enemy attack and people too stupid to recognize it. xoxo

When I was born, Tricky Dick was plain ol' Senator Nixon. I've lived through most of his political career, and in California, to boot. So I got the whole dose of "Nixon's the One."

He was NEVER "the one." He was a grubby little punk hell-bent on making things comfortable and amassing power for Richard Nixon. People who glorify him now are people who never had to deal with him in real life.

The really sad thing is that he went on Laugh-In, looked into the camera, and said "sock it to me." It didn't happen soon enough.
