7 Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, June 17, 2015. On this day in 1963 the United States Supreme Court ruled 8-1 in Abington School District v. Schempp against requiring the reciting of Bible verses and the Lord's Prayer in public schools. You often hear about Madalyn Murray O'Hair the aethiest but Schempp's case made up the bulk of the decision. Today we put rubbers on bananas and have children performing sex acts in school. We are oh so much better now after all this.

11 The Obama administration is ordering food companies to phase out the use of heart-clogging trans fats over the next three years, calling them a threat to public health.

Where do they get the authority to do this? Where is their science? This is just like the great salt scare that turned out to be a crock of shit. What if the food people just told Obama and his clown posse to kiss their ass? As for cholesterol the most recent studies there are saying it appears that it really has no impact on the likelihood of death from heart disease. (Although I haven't got my doctor to buy into that yet)

14 The US is going to hell in a hand basket so what is the Senate doing? They passed an amendment banning torture. The measure was introduced by the senile old idiot McShitty and backed by Dianefeinscrunt. It is already against the law to employ torture. And contrary to what McShitty says, waterboarding is not torture and the opening statement in this AP article is a lie.

The Senate passed a measure Tuesday aimed at ensuring that the United States never tortures detainees again.

Morning Vic, et al.

Vic: ...On this day in 1963 the United States Supreme Court ruled 8-1 in Abington School District v. Schempp against requiring the reciting of Bible verses and the Lord's Prayer in public schools....

I've always said, with prayer in public schools, the problem is not the prayer part, it's the public part.

In Smallvillle America in the late 1950s, early 1960s, we were among the last taught well by locally-managed public schools. We pledged to "one nation, under God," every morning (although the "under God" part was still kind-of new back then). Yet (although I didn't realize it for decades), education was already in decline, compared to a generation earlier.

May the Spirit of Truth teach all God's kids.

Morning, Glories!

69 Morning thread already? OK.

If you've seen Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments, you're familiar with the regal English actor Sir Cecil Hardwicke, who played Seti, pharaoh of Egypt, father to Yul Brynner's Prince Rameses and foster-father to Charlton Heston's Prince Moses:

http://goo.gl/XoT9nN

Hardwicke was, of course, not anyone's idea of a sex symbol, but,a perfect gentleman, he acted as escort to a number of Hollywood leading ladies, even into his later years. An aging Hardwicke happened to be dining at Sardi's, the fabled New York showbiz restaurant, one evening, in the company of a ravishing young thing. When she went to powder her nose, a friend of the actor's came over to the table.

"I say, old boy," he greeted Sir Cedric, "is that your semi-annual?"

"No, old boy,"
Hardwick sighed. "She's my annual-semi."

After today I'll be off for a few days, traveling to the NoVaMoMe and then trying to find bail money, avoid a breach of promise suit or just wake up, so I shan't see you all until Tuesday. Hope you all have a lovely week and weekend.

101 In Smallvillle America in the late 1950s, early 1960s, we were among the last taught well by locally-managed public schools. We pledged to "one nation, under God," every morning (although the "under God" part was still kind-of new back then). Yet (although I didn't realize it for decades), education was already in decline, compared to a generation earlier.

Posted by: mindful webworker - in search of coffee at June 17, 2015 06:35 AM (VDCWC)

I have a book of essays by the late scholar Jacques Barzun. He was writing about the decline of the public schools back in the 1950's and early '60's.

Barzun, who died at the age of 103 a few years ago, graduated at the head of his class at Columbia in 1927 - when he was 19. His French parents sent him to America because they thought an American education was far superior to the French system, particularly after WWI. Barzun became a US citizen and a distinguished scholar, who spent most of his life teaching at Columbia.

It's probably a mercy that he didn't live to see Mattress Girl illustrating to the world just how far Columbia has sunk.

Rick Santorum has previously expressed tolerance for Bruce Jenner be "Trans", and even went to far as to accept him as a human being. Santorum was subsequently asked if he's accept Jenner's endorsement, with the unspoken assumption that Santorum wouldn't risk his support amongst "H8rz". Rather than throw Jenner under the bus, he doubled-down on his tolerance and affirmation of Jenners dignity.

He mentioned Tariffs as one example. Mexico charges us tariffs, we do not in kind (was what he said).

Taxes.

Even stopping the flow of free sh*t to the illegals/non-residents, etc could pay for it in part, if not all. Who knows how much taxpayers are doling out for the border patrol, border processing, medical care, education, transport, jails, etc.

So much money can be redirected, taxed or fined, that, yes, it can be done.

130 And besides all that, I have always considered that fence BS to be a red hearing. A fence by itself is worthless. Like the Romans did with Hadrian's Wall you would have to have outposts all along it to monitor it.

What NEEDS to happen is strict enforcement of illegals caught in the US, massive fines/jail time for people who hire them, and an absolute cut-off of all government aid to illegals.

If you take away the incentives to come here they will quit coming here and go home.

But neither Party wants that to happen.

-Charge Mexico for detainees.

...else build the wall five miles into Mexican territory and annex the land because Fuck You.

Without a plan, it's just a platitude. To McLandslide, "secure the borders" meant "put a whole bunch of sensors on the border that don't work." To TFG, it means have the border patrol welcome illegals with welfare applications and voter registration.

"Secure the border" is empty rhetoric.

204 Friends,

Our dear ol' Defender Doggie has problems.

Most obviously, he has itches. One place on his back haunches that he's gnawed almost raw. It's not fleas or ticks or spider bites or the like, we don't think. Not sure if he got in the poison ivy or something. It's been bad, though.

He's also acting depressed. Not sure if it's just the itching or more than that. Goes outside, looks around, comes back in without exploring - unusual. Coming home last night, I had to haul him out of the car. Sometimes he just stands there, unmoving, for a minute, like he's undecided what to do next; that's weird-scary. Part of his seeming depression could be the wetness - he's never been fond of rainy times.

Living in wet fur and itchy skin would depress me!

He comes over to me, sets his head in my lap, rests a paw on my knee, looks at me with pleading eyes for... something. Not sure what, really. He's been getting lots of pettings, scratchings, and brushings lately, but never seems to be enough.

So many ways lately I've been realizing how he's getting old.

We'll see what the vet says this afternoon.

.
.We just went through a similar situation with one of our dogs. Spent over a year with a Doggy Dermatologist and over $4,500 in various steroids, pills, chemicals, shampoos, biopsies (3), immune depressors, etc with zero results.

Went back to our regular vet and he recommended aggressive baths twice a week at the Vet with a degreaser shampoo followed by a medicated one. We are on week five now and the turnaround is amazing.

All of her fur grew back and she isn't covered in bleeding pussy sores like she was a little over a month ago. She has scars everywhere from the sores but her coat has come completely back. She is no longer miserable and actually has started playing again.

Turns out pollen would get on her fur and stay there no matter what we did. The baths with the degreaser strip the pollen off of her coat.

Our larger local evangelical churches are preparing for it. They tend to be largely independent, so wouldn't run into some of the organizational issues of Catholics and big protestant denominations.
My church (maybe 3,000 members) is trying hard to retire our debt (from building a new sanctuary 4 years ago-the original was a converted grocery store) ASAP, and beginning a home-based ministry. I don't think we're alone. All the others are racing to be sure they own their properties outright, and feeling out wealthier members with larger homes to potentially host meetings.
I think things will happen sooner than anyone thinks, and we gotta plan to go underground. Which is fine with me.

318 O'Reilly had mentioned the book series, Spencer books/novels by Robert Parker. I had never heard of them, and there are so many in the series.

I do not usually read crime novels. It's hard enough to read all you want in a life time.

But, here's the guys bio. Sounds good.

Biography
Robert B. Parker (1932-2010) has long been acknowledged as the dean of American crime fiction. His novel featuring the wise-cracking, street-smart Boston private-eye Spenser earned him a devoted following and reams of critical acclaim, typified by R.W.B. Lewis' comment, "We are witnessing one of the great series in the history of the American detective story" (The New York Times Book Review). In June and October of 2005, Parker had national bestsellers with APPALOOSA and SCHOOL DAYS, and continued his winning streak in February of 2006 with his latest Jesse Stone novel, SEA CHANGE.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Parker attended Colby College in Maine, served with the Army in Korea, and then completed a Ph.D. in English at Boston University. He married his wife Joan in 1956; they raised two sons, David and Daniel. Together the Parkers founded Pearl Productions, a Boston-based independent film company named after their short-haired pointer, Pearl, who has also been featured in many of Parker's novels.

Parker began writing his Spenser novels in 1971 while teaching at Boston's Northeastern University. Little did he suspect then that his witty, literate prose and psychological insights would make him keeper-of-the-flame of America's rich tradition of detective fiction. Parker's fictional Spenser inspired the ABC-TV series Spenser: For Hire. In February 2005, CBS-TV broadcast its highly-rated adaptation of the Jesse Stone novel Stone Cold, which featured Tom Selleck in the lead role as Parker's small-town police chief. The second CBS movie, Night Passage, also scored high ratings, and the third, Death in Paradise, aired on April 30, 2006.

Parker was named Grand Master of the 2002 Edgar Awards by the Mystery Writers of America, an honor shared with earlier masters such as Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen.

Parker died on January 19, 2010, at the age of 77.

You are assuming that it would be built in one year, of course the project would be done over a number of years and budgets. Do the calculations on how much the Interstate highway system would cost to build and police, and you'll decide that is impossible also.

Please, China built the Great Wall - which is longer than the Southern Wall would be - before the birth of Christ. Of course it could be built.

He's living like so many greenies and progs have been screaming for.

solar panels
rain water
etc

Tyler Truitt lives with his girlfriend on his private, two-acre property in Huntsville, Alabama. They live a "self-sustaining" lifestyle with a trailer, solar panels, and a rainwater system and are not connected to any utilities. The city has condemned his home and threatened arrest if they remain on the property in its current condition.

379 Anyone got any book recommendations in the occult detective genre? I've read all the Charlie Huston, Simon R. I like the genre and have read a lot of the really old stuff, too, but the genre is rife with SJW nonsense so I'm tired of trying a new author and getting hit in the face with that nonsense.

When he got his back up and refused to comply with the trailer zoning law is when they hit with all the other stuff.

It really had nothing to do with "living off the grid". Although their local codes may also prohibit septic tanks and that would require some "grid".

395 We'll close the border as soon as there is political will. Didn't Israel close a long stretch, and fairly quickly? It wouldn't all be wall, but surely a wall would be cheaper than a highway, which has all kinds of other considerations for traffic. They drive along with a big trencher, bunch of forms, if it was WW2 we'd probably build five miles a day. But now Marxist enviro's, diversity choirs and others fight it every step of the way, on their road to converting us to Marxist hell.

Mexico would "pay for it" in reduced remittances from fewer illegals, reduced drug flow so druggies have to "buy American", they have harder time moving their bundles of drug money out of the US, the Chamber will have to get their workers from the American work force, etc.

The Donald says he would tax them somehow ... I'm sure he is suggesting some sort of import "tax", not going into Mexico and levying some tax directly as Dana seemed to suggest.

No, I'm not for the Donald, but I'd prefer to hear candidates agree that we can indeed close our border like Israel or other countries do, instead of mocking the concept. But that might mean taking on the chamber.

406 White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the triumph by Syrian Kurds in the town of Tal Abyad "is actually a direct consequence of an earlier military operation that President Obama ordered" to break the siege of the Syrian city of Kobani last fall.

"Because of the president's decision to order the air drop of significant resources and equipments and reinforcements, and because we were able to work with Turkey to allow for additional forces to enter that city, we saw that coalition ... backed by coalition airstrikes, of course ... drive [the Islamic State] out of Khobani," he said. "And over the last several months, those forces have steadily driven east across northern Syria."

Kurdish fighters took control on Tuesday of Tal Abyad near the Turkish border, dealing a major blow to the Islamic State by cutting off a key supply line to its self-proclaimed capital of Raqqa.

LIMBAUGH: Catholics and Christians are being targeted for mass murder all over the world, and here we get a papal encyclical on climate change and global warming? I don't know. The two don't go together. If we're gonna have a papal encyclical, you would think it be something opposing war or the real enemies of people. Is climate change an enemy of the Catholic Church? Is climate change an enemy of Catholics? Even if it is happening, as they say, is climate change a matter of faith? Is it something that the church believes is a weapon being used against the faithful? I don't know folks. It just doesn't wash here. And that's why when I first heard the pope start talking about economics, just like in this encyclical on global warming, just sounded like pure, not even diluted, Marxism.

Thank God we don't have zoning in Houston. Zoning is the direct cause of ghettos. There is nothing in Houston that even begins to compare to Harlem or Watts or the Chicago Projects. In zoned cities once an area is zoned as "low income housing" it is doomed to being a ghetto - since it is realistically impossible to do anything else with the site. Funny how keeping the local government fingers out of real estate development improves the city. Who would have thought that freedom actually works?
