1 Eight Hundred Years Ago at Runnymede, Liberty Triumphed

Eight hundred years ago today, the Magna Carta was signed at Runnymede. This document confirmed ancient liberties and supremacy of law over the state, and stands as the cornerstone of not just English law, but of the entire Anglo-sphere, including the United States of America.

9 Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, June 15, 2015. On this day in 1215 The Magna Carter was signed and sealed by King John of England. Although later kings tried to disavow it as being expired with King John it was used by the American representatives in forming the Constitution of 1789.

An American author has claimed that the president never left the White House without a .38 caliber pistol by his side. He even took it on Air Force One in case a disturbance broke out in mid-air said Brad Meltzer, who writes political thrillers.

Meanwhile, Pride Month continues:

Victoria Villalba, a 19-year-old transgender woman from Phoenix, sat on the back seat of a convertible scanning fellow participants of the L.A. Pride Parade: Boy Scouts, Episcopal priests, drag queens and leather enthusiasts.

When she came out to her family in Mexico in 2011, she said they threw her out of the house, which led her to flee to the United States in search of political asylum. Immigration officials denied her request and placed her in a detention center where she said she spent more than three months in solitary confinement, during which time her hormone therapy was interrupted. A community outcry finally prompted her release.

Im basically starting my life from scratch now, and no better place to start than here, she said, wearing a T-shirt marking her as the winner of a youth courage award from the foundation of Colin Higgins, the screenwriter of Harold and Maude.

83 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.

Here are a couple of stories about agents that you can take or leave:

There's a story that John Wayne once had a dispute with his agent and decided to leave him. He flipped through the telephone book, picked another agent at random and said he wanted to be represented by him. "Draw up the papers," the Duke said, "and I'll come by your office on Saturday to sign."

The agent, who was a young kid struggling in the business, couldn't believe his good fortune at landing such a high-powered client. And when Wayne arrived on Saturday morning, the agent had everything ready, with a fresh contract, plenty of pens for signing and a pot of good hot coffee ready for drinking.

Wayne went over the contract in silence. He picked up a pen. He put it to paper. Just as he was about to sign, he looked up at the agent. "Are you Jewish?"

"Not necessarily."

One of the many blacklisted screenwriters during Hollywood's "Red Scare" (which, incidentally, was hardly the inquisition it has been portrayed as, and which certainly did sweep up unrepentant Communists in its wake) was named Walter Bernstein (Fail-Safe, The Molly Maguires, The Front). He was told that he could not work at Paramount unless he sent them a letter clearing himself of all involvements in Communist front organizations. He refused, telling his agent that it was a matter of principle.

"Don't worry about it," the agent reassured him. "I'll speak to Y. Frank Freeman, the head of the studio. I promise you that you're not going to have to write that letter. It's outragous that they would ask you to do such a thing! It's offensive, unprincipled, unethical, un-American and a moral outrage! As long as I am your agent, you have my personal guarantee that you will never have to write a letter like that! Never!"

So, picking up the telephone, the agent called Freeman. With Bernstein listening, he stated his client's position very clearly and forcefully.

The he listened. And listened. And listened. Finally, he said goodbye and hung up.

"Walter," the agent sighed, "write the fucking letter."

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

86 So, I went to a wedding this weekend. First of all, it was held in an 18th Century Manor House in Maryland, and I was seated at a table across from a black guy who can be described in three words: Gay Chris Tucker. That was not the weird part. Also, one of the guests was a midget. That was also not the weird part.

The father of the groom was a tranny, that was the weird part.

Picture Jamie Gumm's face with Rob Jeremy's hairline on an Edith Bunker body with man-hands and I think you're pretty much in the neighborhood of what that was.

2 short agent bits:

When asked who his agent was, Woody Allen was quoted as saying, " I don't have an agent. I'm with William Morris."

My dear friend and long-suffering representative sent a beautifully written script, in the mold of "Tender Mercies" to Clint Eastwood's agent, hoping that Clint would do the role as he would be perfect. The agent, Lenny Hirschand, called my friend after reading it and said, "it's such a beautiful script, Academy Award calibre. Unfortunately, we're gonna have to pass." My friend was shocked, "Why?" "Because Clint don't die in movies."

20 years later you had "Gran Torino" so there goes that theory.

102 Actually, speaking of the William Morris agency - it had a tradition of employing short men as agents. The producer Walter Wanger found out that his wife, actress Joan Bennett, was having an affair with an agent named Jennings Lang, who, oddly for an agent, was very tall. Wanger caught up with Lang in a parking lot and shot him in the testicles.

"It's a good thing Joan wasn't screwing a William Morris agent," quipped screenwriter Harry Kurnitz, "or the bullet would have hit him right between the eyes."

I'm in need of 2.5-inch (outside diameter) rubber or neoprene washers for a home weatherizing repair. Home Depot was stumped. Any thoughts on where they might be found? Or where I can get 0.125-inch sheet rubber to cut my own? Do auto supply stores sell make-your-own-gasket kits?

176 For those holding out hope of a GOP repeal of Obamacare, I would remind you that 20 years ago the leadership (Bob Dole) pushed for a nationalized health care (insurance) program over Hillary's failed initiative.

I was thinking about the Democrats new gun control scheme they've introduced in the House; it's not hard to imagine this sequence of events.

1. A Democrat Congress passes the gun control law and Hillary signs it.

2. Republicans campaign in 2018 on repealing the terrible gun control law.

3. Republicans regain Congress and then plead helplessness to overturn Hillary's gun control law and fully fund it because they don't want to be seen as "shutting down the Government to cater to fringe gun nuts."

I was under the impression that any actress who wanted to work had to give it up to the studio bigs.

I'd have figured that a producer would have known that (and taken advantage of it not a few times, himself).

Or was the Wanger's problem that his wife was slumming by hitting it with a mere agent?

The GOP Leadership's Latest Obamatrade Ploy: Small Business Tax Hike That Violates GOP's Anti-Tax Pledge

Establishment Republicans desperately trying to secure the passage of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), which would give President Obama fast-track authority to secure congressional approval of at least three secretive trade deals, are now willing to increase taxes on small businesses in a way that would violate a pledge almost every Republican Congressman has taken when elected into office

"There's a lot of dishonesty going on when the bill is described as raising the fines on tax violations. That's dishonest because the fines aren't for people who failed to pay their taxes, the fines are on businesses that for no fault of their own, they forget to fie a piece of paperwork telling the IRS how much someone else owes on their taxes."

Any worker who earns regular tips (specified as earning at least $30 in
tips a month by the FLSA) is eligible for a special minimum wage rate.
Employers are permitted to pay tipped employees an hourly cash wage of
as little as $2.13/hr- however, if this wage and the tips earned during
that hour do not add up to at least the applicable minimum wage, the
employer must make up the difference in cash.
