The Intellectual Weakness of The Fourth Estate [CBD]

The Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect is a recurrent theme around these parts, and we all have examples we can trot out to expose the stupidity of the media.

This one might be my favorite though .....Imagine a large industrial corporation that produces hundreds of thousands of relatively expensive products with just 14,000 workers. The market for their products is quite literally the entire United States, and the math --really just arithmetic -- says that those 14,000 workers are a tiny part of the market. Yet the brilliant media accepts unquestioningly the weak-minded analysis that Henry Ford raised his workers' wages so that they could become consumers of his products.

"Henry Ford understood this when he paid his workers high enough wages to buy his cars. Today's titans of the economy appear to have forgotten the lesson."

Math doesn't lie. This is a moronic supposition that should have been rejected after 10 seconds of doodling on a scratch pad.

After thousands of examples of the intellectual flaccidity and inferiority of the journalists in our midst, we have to accept the fact that they are not the best and the brightest. They are, overwhelmingly, college students who couldn't handle college math, couldn't manage to do the work to pass Biology 101 and Chemistry 101, and were daunted by the prospect of reading a bunch of long books with lots of facts in them, so history was not an option either.

So what was left? (fill in the blank)_____ Studies or Journalism.

3 According to the sources I've read, Ford harbored a thorough hatred of unions, and came to feel that a preemptive increase of his workers' wages was the best preventative of a union takeover of his business. I'm not sure how well it worked. Ford is certainly unionized today, but the tactic might have bought the company a number of years.

Well, the "lesson" here is fundamentally wrong.

Ford, who probably knew a "little" bit more about running a business than some third tier journo school grad, probably knew that the labor market effectively sets the price of labor, not him.

He paid his employees what the market could bear, probably a bit on the generous side to ensure high quality labor and loyalty.

To the extent that the ability to purchase his product was a factor at all, he probably figured that if his factory workers could afford to purchase his cars, then most working Americans should be able to as well. IE, he was deliberately creating "working class" vehicles, not "luxury" ones.

32 Ford may have been an asshole on the personal level, but by using the production line and standardized parts he brought the price of a car down to a level that average Americans could afford. The very idea that the average person could and ought to have such a luxury was in itself revolutionary.

It's something that needs to be periodically restated, because "Mass Transit! Monorail!" is still trumpeted by our betters who of course use personal transportation themselves, as their time is more valuable.

Though there were exceptions, I recall one of my standard comments about that sector after having left it (Beltway journalism) was that "I was never confused that I was among a bunch of rocket scientists".

But it's more complicated than that. At the "elite" levels, it's not platonic-ideal stupidity or low intellect, it's a stupid mindset. Historically and economically illiterate, all in line with a particular distorted outlook - and not as simply described as "leftism". Just as with Obama, the term "socialist" or "Marxist" is tossed around, but just as with him these people really don't have the vaguest idea about those actual (stupid, pernicious) philosophies or policy outlooks.

35 The primary reason Ford instituted 5.00 a day was the turnover rate in his factories was so high, it interfered with his goal of ever higher production and sales. 5.00 brought that to a smoking halt. The fact that some of his newly affluent employees could now afford a car was just happy accident., and usually after a very long period of saving. 5.00 a day was 1500.00 a yaear. A car then, even a cheap one was 900-2000.00- still well out of the reach for most.

The facts are all there for anyone to see. But lazy journalist is....lazy.

Henry Ford knew that the key to making a car for the "great multitude" was not paying his workers more but keeping prices low, as his actual quote. . .makes clear:

"It will be so low in price that no making making a good salary will be unable to own one, and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God's great open spaces".

Having been on the other side of the equation WRT to "big" stories, dealing with the top-tier media, I can say that there are in fact many who are not at all dim or stupid - nor even illiterate - but the mindset (sorry, no handy term for it) is the problem. Often not *theirs*, but the collective, controlling one in the editorial structure.

Example. Non-American reporters for the big wires, covering a big story in a hot war zone, having their basic copy and reporting altered to fit the predictable line back in Paris, London, and NYC (AFT, Reuters, AP). Several times they came to me furious, apologetic, explaining that *they* had filed a different story than the one that we now saw on the web. One even had printed out his original for side-by-side. And there was the time the non-American wire reporter was hopping mad, yelling to (not at) me about the outrageous dispatch from the AP on a major incident, wherein some ridiculous anti-US nonsense was just accepted and inserted in the story.

There were a few exceptions of guys with the stature to protect their dispatches from any monkeying around back at HQ. Some of them became our go-to guys to do actual reporting, and we opened the kimono wide for them, and they did a good job (not that it mattered).

In the end it's just depressing. Journalism with a skeptical, but not tendentious, mindset can accomplish great things. It has been, indeed, one of the key elements in building successful open societies.

Ford's personal anti-Semitism was widely known. In fact, Adolf Hitler cited Ford as a personal inspiration (really).

In an unprecedented move, in 1997 the Ford Motor Company paid for an adless run of the movie "Schindler's list" to appear on commercial broadcast TV.

They publically denied it (of course they would), but many believe that this was in part a form of "atonement" for Ford's historical anti-Semitism.

And of course along with the pernicious anti-US, anti-military, anti-western, anti-freedom mindset (simplifying/exaggerating a bit on those terms, but hey comments section) goes the groupthink peer pressure dynamic.

One BBC reporter (they cycled through every few months) "came out" to me one day - literally talking low, in a furtive manner, one day during a lunch break - that he couldn't believe the inverted moral framework/attitude of the western press in our location. Not the war itself, but the disastrously distorted/inaccurate "reporting"on it, andreaction to it, by American society and institutions. journalism on big topics.

86 Ford's personal anti-Semitism was widely known.

See here: http://tinyurl.com/cg25any

Yah, that's well known at least amongst people who dig a little bit into the history.

I thought Ford presenting Schindler's List without interruption remarkable, if not unheard of. They probably did do that for absolution. But as far as I care, the problem with Ford's anti-Semitism ended when he died in '48.

Posted by: Bill H at June 14, 2015 01:52 PM (Baojj)

87 3 According to the sources I've read, Ford harbored a thorough hatred of unions, and came to feel that a preemptive increase of his workers' wages was the best preventative of a union takeover of his business. I'm not sure how well it worked. Ford is certainly unionized today, but the tactic might have bought the company a number of years.

Posted by: Francis W. Porretto at June 14, 2015 12:53 PM (d2g9U)

Of course Ford did; he was an anti-semite and a fascist. This comment is why I can never feel comfortable with "conservatives". "They" believe that they did it all if they founded a business. Nonsense and balderdash! It takes good, dedicated workers on all levels of the business to make it a success. No problem for the entrepreneur and capitalist to get good returns on their magnificent efforts, but SO SHOULD THE "WORKERS". And, yeah, I have no love for most unions and most are corrupt -- but unions have often been the only recourse for many workers for some protection (hours, conditions, safety, child labor, etc.) and sharing of the "wealth" they help create.

Capitalistic greed and selfishness is what has turned "the people" toward evil Marxism -- in addition to people's own propensities for self-aggrandizement (freebies). But think of all the freebies the ent/cap kept for themselves from the sweat of the brow of the managers/engineers/supervisors/less-skilled workers.

Henry became insanely wealthy; gave his children bazillion $s and gifts, even during the depression in view of all the horrible suffering of others. How did his children fare? Not so well.

We all are in this together, something those calling themselves "conservatives" tend to forget. I have not yet been able to find any place better than classical liberalism, which begins with the Magna Charta -- not a product of conservatism. I abhor those who keep denigrating the idea of "liberalism" and mistaking marxist authoritariansm or fascist totalitarianism for it. The Republicans began the worst of this language dumbing-down for political purposes, as they also did by denying rights, privileges, and respect to gays and lesbians. If these Rs-Ps-R had been given willingly, there would be no corrupting of marriage. Marriage should be between a man and a woman; there are other forms of wonderful, loving partnerships for life. Nip, if Jeb savages Rubio, America gains (and Jeb will not get the nod anyway). And if Walker must face tough stuff from Jeb, then one more chance to show what he's made of, on the national level. Just spitballing, seems likely that Jeb would be coming from the idiotic GOPe angle on major issues, forcing Walker to differentiate by emphasizing the importantly different approach he does have (e.g. budget sanity and willingness to take on the catastrophic problem of public sector unions).

Can't see any harm in that. I'm assuming various things will doom Jeb's quest, perhaps a risky yet not insane assumption, so if Jeb goes after Rubio, net-net, the country benefits.

pyromancer, your thinking is flabby and emotionally tinged - i.e., it's not really thinking.

Marriage predates Christianity by a quadrillion years, obviously flows from biological and social logic and common sense, and was not founded to deny "rights" to a tiny minority. Plural marriage in some cultures almost always arose as a practical, primitive social safety-net response to husbands dying off leaving families. All very practical reasons for most things, not "philosophical". As for marriage redefinition today, no practical rationale for it whatever. Any "inequities" (tax code, legal/$$$ stuff) are first of all just one more set among many, and secondly can be fixed by the opposite of what is being done: take the social engineering out of the tax code , and voilaany contractural relationship can be established w/out even engaging social/religious/cultural norms or objections.

As for feeling comfortable with "conservatives" you (and many others here) should stop being lazy and tribalistic and drop the label-focus and, uh, think and do the ditch-digging you need to do. Your gauzy "you didn't build that" perspective on economic growth and enterprise is factually flawed. The social cost and suffering involved in the (early) building of modern industrial economies was literally undetectible on the scale of human history, while the direct result of same (modern industrial economies) are the greatest advance for the most people in species history, by orders of magnitude.

Male homosexuality has been deprecated not for philosophical or theological, but rather for public health reasons, that later became enshrined in various religions. Rather like prohibitions on eating pork or shellfish.

And yeah, I know, the next argument is going to be that the dietary restrictions are now outdated, because eating pork and shellfish no longer pose a threat. But that's not true of (male) homosexuality; it's still a disease vector for STDs generally, and AIDS in particular.

So, in summary, eat pork, not dork.

Again, polygamy in most cases started as a practical response to reality. Warriors in warrior cultures (Arab bedouin) always on the move were killed, their families would starve without another breadwinner, basically new husband substituted for a collective social safety net. Similar situation in many African societies. Not some philosophically distinctive approach to marriage - just an expedient real life adaptation. Of course plural marriage later evolved into a power equation (economic ability, plus desire to create many heirs/followers).

But redefining marriage fundamentally, in a biological sense of two of the same gender, would be entirely a philosophical move, not practical (and I'm agnostic on the issue). A cultural question not to be settled by courts. But the authoritarian instinct among "Americans" (pyromancer for example) to compel the masses to adopt their particular outlook now is supreme, and the institutions set up to modulate/block that are essentially broken.

After that, and for the rest of the day, I fly up the 'Big' flag, which is a little about 30% larger than the usual nylon flag, it's also made from cotton bunting, just like my dad's.

149 Sports commentators know a lot about their specific sports ONLY and ONLY BECAUSE their target audience knows so much about the subject in such detail.

If they tried to pull what is pulled regularly on 2A, firearms in general, law enforcement, legal decisions, science, sociology, evolutionary biology, statistics and tax policy they would be laughed off the continent, lose their jobs and their media employer might well send a goon out yearly to set the appliance boxes they moved into on fire.

There is a solution in that, somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can see how to make it happen.

Too late for that sentiment by many years. Pierce and Buchanan didn't do much to halt the metaphorical fire consuming the nation, but they at least tried not to throw more fuel on it. Obummer in their place would have given a speech on the cleansing nature of fire while standing on a pile of oil-soaked firewood.

It makes sense to me. Belgium exists because of the Vienna Conference whose tenets were enforced by the outcome of the Hundred Days. Bonaparte had temporarily realized the dreams of the French kings by absorbing the Flemish lands into France. ===========

From George Orwell:
-----------------
The keyword here is blackwhite. Like so many Newspeak words, this word has two mutually contradictory meanings. Applied to an opponent, it means the habit of impudently claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts. Applied to a Party member, it means a loyal willingness to say that black is white when Party discipline demands this. But it means also the ability to believe that black is white, and more, to know that black is white, and to forget that one has ever believed the contrary. This demands a continuous alteration of the past, made possible by the system of thought which really embraces all the rest, and which is known in Newspeak as doublethink. Doublethink is basically the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.

185 Of course the homage to sports writers was sarcasm. Most of them are half as bright and three times louder than the average dumbass journalist. How much more obvious could I have been?

Posted by: Edgar Allan Schmoe at June 14, 2015 03:19 PM (/f6Nd)

186 I have an undergraduate degree in journalism. I had an excellent GPA and high SAT scores. I exempted college math (i.e. journalism did not require any math beyond high school). In my first semester of chemistry I had a high average and wanted to switch to the honors science program that combined chemistry, physics, and biology. My counselor strongly advised against this, saying it was more than I needed. He and my department head blocked this move. I was only a journalist for a couple of years, but found the practical aspects of the education very useful for all subsequent careers. But the converse is the problem; the field actively discourages smart people from entering. The average journalist doesn't know enough about statistics, economics, or science to know how to ask the right questions, or spot obvious falsehoods. It is not difficult to mislead the entire field by simply appealing to authority or group think. Intellectually blunted, they go on moral crusades convinced in their tiny little minds that they are on the side of the angels.

Unfortunately, the prevailing view makes the few like you look just as bad as someone who really does look at history through red tinted glasses.

I could forgive the views on Ford if sheep dip would come around to the realization that Ford was a selfish prick with a nasty mean streak. He came up with a masterstroke idea which allowed him to rule effectively over his rather large kingdom. Unfortunately, the narrative that employers are there primarily for the good of the employees is just too juicy to pass up. The 5.00/day wage at Ford is a major benchmark for social justice, no matter how bad the consequences were.

Posted by: Bill H at June 14, 2015 04:49 PM (Baojj)

194 Remember also there were only a handful of "schools of journalism" in the '70s. Most classes were offered under English departments and taught by the faculty not smart enough to teach Shakespeare or Romantic Poetry or 20th Century American Fiction. When the boom began with Woodward and Bernstein, these schools were created out of those same lame professors.

To this day, few if any professors in schools of journalism have ever actually worked as a journalist. Before j-schools, reporters learned their craft on the street, under the scrutiny of surly editors, working their way up from garden clubs to crime blotter, only after years of training being entrusted with City Hall. There are no more such reporters. It is a dead occupation. They are all college "educated" and indoctrinated as Social Justice Warriors.

201 Employers pay above-market wages for various reasons, but mainly to attract better talent or avoid excessive turnover. Both of these were the real reasons for HF's policy. According to Journalist Conventional Wisdom, however, Ford would have had to know workers' assets and disposable income when setting wages, and he would have had to prohibit them from buying Dodges, Studebakers or Saxons. And failing to do that, he would simply have been "paying workers high enough wages to buy his [competitors'] cars."
