Overnight Open Thread (13 Jun 2015)

The NSA can't stop, won't stop.

Now the Obama Administration has asked the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance court to grant permission to restart the program for a 6-month "transition," a move that not only seems particularly unnecessary, but also flies against the spirit of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals' decision that bulk surveillance is illegal.

Moron Lifestyle

The Supreme Court in Iowa has affirmed your right to be drunk on your front porch.

Decline Of America's Power

Who's afraid of America? With our current leadership? Not many and that was largely left out in the article. Obama's track record with red lines and focus on the political appearance side appeases our enemies and emboldens them. They don't seem to fear hashtags.

Scrambled Eggs

Text Lanes

Text walking lanes installed in Belgium. Next up, selfie lanes?

Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Oh this sounds good. How to make an epic bacon-wrapped grilled cheese sandwich.

Beer Opening Trick

Race

So now the litmus test for what race you are is what you espouse to be "when it matters"? Your genes don't matter.

Cyber Security

I guess this is the administrations response to the cyber attack. This should've been done a long, long time ago and already incorporated into SOP.

Also on Friday, the White House announced a "30-day Cybersecurity Sprint" in which the administration is instructing agencies to take actions such as testing their networks' vulnerabilities, patching weaknesses, restricting the number of privileged user accounts and "dramatically" ramping up the use of so-called multifactor authentication, which goes beyond requiring people to use passwords. In addition, a "Cybersecurity Sprint Team" will engage in a 30-day review of federal cyber efforts.

Only a matter of days before we get a cybersecuirty sprint team czar.

Polar Bears vs Dolphins

Polar bears are eating dolphins. Of course climate change gets blamed but check out this paragraph.

Two virtually ice-free winters enticed the dolphins into the Arctic region, where their food has also showed up thanks to warm water. But a sudden influx of ice trapped the dolphins, making them easy prey for hungry polar bears.

Um no, it wasn't virtually ice free the last two winters in the arctic. Can you say stranded warmists needing rescue the last few years because of, wait for it, ice.

9 Where is everyone? I think I am Kate Upton today. Does this bring you back?

Question. Serious question...for those of you who have moved to another area and house...as I was in my last castle for 20 yrs and area for 30 yrs...how long does it take to sort of/ kind of feel "normal" again? And the house feel like home? I mean, I miss my old house. This has been more stressful than imagined with everything in house going haywire (tonight neighbor knocked on door as we had a geyser from broken irrigation thanks to guys putting in fence. It is a blast and we are bleeding money $$). I am counting blessings and rocking back and forth and telling myself this is normal. But for how long? In short, my flying monkeys, I am a wee bit depressed. Thanks.

37 >>>for those of you who have moved to another area and house...as I was in my last castle for 20 yrs and area for 30 yrs...how long does it take to sort of/ kind of feel "normal" again? And the house feel like home?

We moved to a brand new city and state 11 months ago. The house part was easy, but I do miss my old house. Cougar and I bought a 1957 rancher and made it just awesome. Ask Weirddave or Gingy, they saw it.

New house is...serviceable. New construction, and seems to be solidly built. Only issues so far have been minor.

It is hard adjusting to a postage stamp lot in a subdivision. I miss being able to take a piss outside if I felt like it. And not having to shut all the windows before sexy time.

No luck making friends, it's a small town and everyone has the same friends they had in high school and don't need any more. Don't really care about that, as most other humans are annoying and not worth my time.

38 how long does it take to sort of/ kind of feel "normal" again? And the house feel like home?

I'm averaging a move about every 18 months; it feels normal as soon as I figure out where all the light switches are. "Home" has depended on why I move. Sometimes it doesn't feel like home until it's time to leave. O.o

Got two notices today from the privatized housing people that they're cutting the renters' insurance from our contract but it's not their faaaaault, it's Congress'. Yeah, we get less services every year but the housing people still take our full increase of BAH every year, funny thing that.

And Christy, as an AF wife, it doesn't take me long to have things feel like "home." Even though we go back to our parents' for various things every few months, our hometowns have both changed so drastically that wherever we are is home. 55 Jane, one of my sons probably feels this way about me, oh, once a month. They don't mean it.

Thanks, morons and y-not. Some days I feel ok. Some days I don't. Sort of like almond joy or that chick who thinks she's black.

We built the house we left. It took 20 yrs to get it perfect. I don't have 20 yrs to spare, want this done now...and it is turning into a money pit. Complete with irritation towards spouse and vice versa and hail. I am ready to pack my hobo pack and catch a freight train to look for sapphires in Montana. Would probably last one day then look for resort for evening.

This place is huge. Perhaps I should barricade myself, bury in boxes, and wait and see how long it will take Yankee husband to find me. Oh, and Mrs. Kravitch, well-meaning neighbor who wants us all to be a village, has struck two days in row: one for ice cream social dates for neighbors and, today, a message on door for some type of kiddie thing in her yard. I don't mean to flag her, as her heart is good in wanting to teach kids about the Bible. But, whoa. We figure others must feel the same and run from her.

I am so glad you morons are here and remain crazy. At least something is the same...

This moving crap, however, is not for me. I will have to be hauled out of here to the camps or quite daid before I do this again. I must have been either a) temporarily insane and feeling frisky and energetic or b) decision made during hurricane season.

I had highlights and new hair cut yesterday. Which lifted spirits briefly (they had the door of salon open to mountains...no bugs, children!).

I have a zit. Maybe the move has awakened deadish hormones? Thanks for letting me whine.

117 Christy, I moved from a dinky one bedroom apartment that I had lived in for 19 years to a three bedroom house. First two months I was camping in it, and slowly buying furniture. Then my job was cut and I had to commute 120 miles, round trip, to the job I manged to get myself into, and my main recreation was on Friday evenings I watched MST3K reruns and fell asleep on the couch. Then after a year, on the very same day I was notified that my job in THAT office was cut, I was injured in a fire evacuation from the office and spent two months sleeping on the couch while healing broken bones, and three months and PT after that I broke up terminally with my long-term girlfriend. On the day after Thanksgiving.

It was STILL worth it. EVERY MOMENT OF IT. I have a garden and fruit trees and I have cats without worrying about the landlord.

From your nic you no longer look like the Duchess of Alba, so you are doing better.

It is a blast and we are bleeding money $$). I am counting blessings and rocking back and forth and telling myself this is normal. But for how long? In short, my flying monkeys, I am a wee bit depressed. Thanks.

My wife and I moved from Manitoba to Alberta in 2007. I left a job I held for 30-minute workout years. We left a church we helped start. And moved to a new place. It was extremely unfamiliar and uncomfortable. But gradually the drive home became familiar, and, in time became, truly, my drive home. It's home now. We would likely be fully retired if we still lived in Manitoba. Here I still need to work but our grandchildren are here and I have no regrets. Life is good.

The one reality is that life-long friendships aren't built overnight-or in seven years--but new friendships get formed.

Hah, now for an extra special kicker...turns out I've just been informed by a friend and ally at Eastern Washington U. (who was involved in bringing me to campus to speak there last semester), that it was Rachel Dolezal who had objected to me coming, because I, as a white man, can't speak to race issues involving black people. First, they got a dictionary at EWU where she can look up "irony?" And second, her objection is perfectly indicative of her problem. She thinks I seek to speak from authority on blackness. No, that's not me, that's YOU Rachel. I only seek to speak about whiteness. Her confusion on that point is the source of pretty much all this bullshit: not knowing the difference between confronting whiteness and seeking to speak for blackness.

There are moments when this house feels right. Then there are moments when I want to go "home." But it is done. I have moved before, in college. Moved from here to Florida with two babies to occupy me and very little to unpack as poor.

I am thankful for the Internet and phones to keep in touch with friends and one son. But it is not them I miss, it is a feeling of exhaling or something. Kicking back and not feeling guilty I am not unpacking or, heaven help me, painting over the 50 Shades of Dijon former owner left us. I am hoping by fall it will be fantastic and I will be happily planting bulbs I could not have in Floriduh and enjoying the fall colors et all vs hurricane evacuation on I-95.

I love you all. xoxo

200 Well, there was absolutely no progress made on the home/financial/cyber-security front over the last two days -- in fact, we left the house substantially at-risk even though we know there have been a rash of residential burglaries in our neighborhood of late.

Instead, we drove up to Sacramento to socialize with the godkids and their parents, spent the night up there, and attended godson #1 (godkid #2)'s high school graduation today, then socialized some more with their extended family.

I half expected the house to be looted when we got back, but it is the same mess it was when we left. And I got to see the little kid I carried back from the park one day, screaming and kicking, over my shoulder.....stand up at a podium and give a speech to thank those people in his life who have helped him become what he is today.

I was bound and determined to have a home, and I prepped for it. I got lucky in a lot of ways, and I survived a lot of crap. Attitude is a lot of what makes success.

Attitude takes you over the rough spots and it sounds like you got someone to help.

One day at a time, my new GF tells me, and she has more reason than many to know that.

Most underground irrigation systems are now PVC and that just glues together. Easier than sewing a shirt, that is for sure. The hard part is the shovel work and working upside down in a trench if it is really deep.

First thing in the door I saw was what I thought was a V-1 painted yellow, it turned out to be JB-2 loon. I then saw the V-2, and asked if it was a real V-2 or a repro. The Docent looked embarrassed and said, "no, it is a reproduction, but the Redstone and the Titan II are real" as if it reflected badly on the museum.

If you have a chance, go there. They have a B-17, SR-71, an ME-262, amazing stuff. We've been talking about it and looking up settings and such online, but she hadn't found the one she wanted. We wandered into a jewelry store at the mall (that I happened to have a charge card for) to look around and she saw that topaz ring and fell in love with the setting. So, I own it now and I'll be getting the estimates for the new stones within the week.
After that she started to get a little freaked out about it, we've been talking about it for a while but now she's starting to believe it's going to happen. She still WANTS it to happen mind you, just now it seems more real.

I'm only around a bit, here and there and gathered that you picked up a virus from a troll and it completely fried your system. Apparently, a link he sent you to put something on your computer that was incredibly malicious and did a ton of damage that required professional help.
What I'm wondering is...is there anything the rest of us should be aware of to protect ourselves?
Is it safe going to tinyurl threads other people post?

Thanks for your time. You don't have to go into major detail - just a quick sentence or two unless you think there is a general threat we should all be aware of.

2cu.ft. bags of mulch are around 16lbs. A cubic yard is 27 cu.ft. At +/- 8lb./cu.ft. a yard of mulch would weigh 216 lb.

514 Busy day for me, too. It was raining this morning, so I spent some time inside. Put a new bass driver into one of my stereo speakers that the dog had chewed up when she was a pup. She got the foam covers, too, of course, and I cleaned the last vestiges of the foam off the panels and stapled on some grille cloth salvaged from speakers found at the dump. They look fine. So I hooked up the stereo for the first time in several years. Played an audio CD on the DVD player/VCR combo I have, and it sounded good. Dragged out the old Dual 1218 turntable, and played through a stack of old 78's I'd bought, but never listened to, ending up with "Celery Stalks at Midnight" by Will Bradley and his orchestra, and "C-Jam Blues" by Duke Ellington. Both those records sounded pretty clean and free of surface noise, too. For 78's, at any rate.

Then I went outside and cut the trunk out of a car I'm parting out, and scraped all the useless undercoating off the bottom of the trunk floor.

Hello cthulhu,
It sounds like you're going through hell and I'm sorry that this entire experience has been so horrible for you.
I'm
only around a bit, here and there and gathered that you picked up a
virus from a troll and it completely fried your system. Apparently, a
link he sent you to put something on your computer that was incredibly
malicious and did a ton of damage that required professional help.
What I'm wondering is...is there anything the rest of us should be aware of to protect ourselves?
Is it safe going to tinyurl threads other people post?

Thanks
for your time. You don't have to go into major detail - just a quick
sentence or two unless you think there is a general threat we should all
be aware of.

Funny you should ask that.....

My first indication that anything was awry was when I got a bunch of amazon.com emails asking me to rate their customer service on phone discussions. Considering that my attacker's discussions used three pieces of information (available from my resume or countless other documents) -- name IRL, address, and personal (linked to Amazon) email addy -- and that allowed my attacker to discuss details regarding my prior orders [including that case of hand lotion, case of Kleenex, and DVD of 50 Shades of Grey.....], get the last four digits and expiration dates of every card on my Amazon account, and reset my Amazon password so that he could glimpse everything in my wish list, cart, downloads, and "previously viewed".....er, I'm not that thrilled with it. I have since CLOSED my Amazon account. Those fucking blabbermouths can't be trusted with a burnt match, much less anything relevant.

Second, my primary ISP will ultimately allow you access to an email account if you have the email and last-four-digits of credit-card to which it is billed....which you can easily get from Amazon. You can change the security questions, add alternate email verifications, change alert texts to cellphones....and see the last 4 digits being billed -- which means: once you're in, you're in -- unless you can burn a cc for each attempt to kick an interloper out.

Third, an interloper can continue to read your emails even after you have changed your password, due to POP3 persistence.....which is a real pain-in-the-ass.

Fourth, I have evidence (mostly on shut-down, compromised computers), that the person who did this to me frequents this blog because he bragged about it here, showing knowledge he gained from my email accounts in open posts.

Fifth, by either treating this person's posts as I would a regular's, or by reading emails from myself as if they were real reminders, I got a keylogger dropped on me. [Note -- there is no reason to think there was a keylogger prior to the initial Amazon/ISP exploit, because it wouldn't have been necessary to get so cute.]

Sixth, it is exceedingly likely that this payload was dropped on me using a tinyurl link. The suspect is noted for using "youtube, youtube, youtube, tinyurl, youtube, tinyurl, youtube, tinyurl" links over the course of an ONT.

Seventh -- I'm going to intentionally omit the details on how I figured out I had a keylogger, but I will note that I gave up an upper-level password, covered for that risk, and left it running for about 10 days on my Discover card. When I curtailed the risk on my Discover card on 6/1, they told me that my last online access had been on 5/31. Despite how I'd known I had a keylogger before June 1, online access on 5/31 proved its existence.

Eighth -- I was paranoid enough that I have a bunch of systems in recovery, have not suffered a direct financial loss, and anticipate the ability to salvage all data on all drives. Regular backup and password control advice would take care of most of this for most people.

And ninth -- and it kills me....if your system isn't totally secure against malware, don't click tinyurl links dropped by anyone but long-time and trusted Morons whose hashes match their history.

531 It took me years to finally figure out the key to making good scrambled eggs, which is not to scramble them too much.

I used to beat the hell out of my eggs before putting them in the pan, so that they ended up looking a lot like that yellowish mush in the video.

But eggs taste much better when each bite has a some texture -- when each forkfull has either more yoke than white, or vice versa.

This brings out the flavor of each component, and the different feel in the mouth of each component adds to the experience.

So begin by melting butter in a pan on low heat, using enough butter to completely cover the bottom. Break the eggs into a common bowl, but don't beat them. Instead, using a fork, break open each yoke just enough so that it spills out into the egg white -- just enough to leak into the white.

Pour a generous portion of milk or half-and-half into the egs, and stir them lightly -- a gentle blending, not a mixture.

Pour milk and eggs into a pan and season with salt and pepper. Throughout the cooking, keep the heat as low as possible -- high heat creates long chains of protein in the eggs, making them rubbery. The milk and low heat keep the eggs nice and soft and fluffy.

Let the eggs sit in the pan as poured -- don't mix or stir. When the bottom firms up and starts to bubble, take a spatula and scrape the bottom of the pan, moving the hardened eggs and letting the liquid egg on top to ooze onto the bottom, replacing the cooked eggs to be cooked in turn.

Do this one or twice more -- this is where the "scrambling" comes in. Only it's not scrambling, so much as it is folding the cooked and uncooked portions on top of each other. This keeps the texture in the eggs.

When done, gently remove the eggs from pan to plate, again to prevent too much mixing.

Guaranteed best eggs ever.

I probably am on the owe side with my neighbor. He loves his bobcat and does my driveway all winter but wont let me even pay for diesel. So the danger is we would be up till sunrise not the beer supply depletion.

585 I was reading the comments at Instapundit's post about the metric system. It's an interesting discussion. While metric is undoubtedly useful for science, traditional measuring systems evolved organically to meet human needs and were not imposed from the top down. One commenter hit it out of the ballpark:

"But the fact is that the metric system had its origins in the violence and terror of the French Revolution, not merely as a byproduct of social and political upheaval--for which it might otherwise be forgiven--but as a deliberate, conscious effort by the most radical of the radicals to completely destroy the fabric of human history and civilization and remake it in their image. Metric was not designed for convenience, but as part and parcel of an explicit attempt to erase man as he was and recreate a new, scientific, rational man who could march into the future unrestrained by the shackles of his own past. And the philosophical heirs to the French Revolution have, onto this very day, continued to push for its universal mandatory adoption.

It is, in a very real sense, just another tool in the modern totalitarian's toolbox--and most people don't even know it."

589 Using Celsius for air temperature is just as dumb as using Fahrenheit. Yeah ok water freezing at zero is somewhat useful but the air temperature regularly dips well below that point. And it never ever gets close to the boiling point of water so it being 100 or 212 is pretty meaningless
