Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Matt K. Lewis: Don't Let Them Put You In the Conservative GhettoYesterday, having read just an excerpt, and making all sorts of unwarranted assumptions, I castigated Matt K. Lewis for this piece appearing in the Washington Post. (I made my criticisms on Twitter, not here.) Having read the piece now, I have to to apologize for Criticizing Something Without Actually Reading It. (I read two paragraphs and assumed I knew his argument -- but I didn't.)Want to really understand the conservative furor over George Stephanopoulos’ failure to disclose $75,000 in donations to the Clinton Foundation? It wasn’t just because Stephanopoulos grilled "Clinton Cash" author Peter Schweizer without mentioning the obvious conflict of interest. The outrage reflects an even more deep-seated frustration: Stephanopoulos personifies a sort of media selection bias that has been irking conservatives for generations. He was a paid political operative and Democratic staffer who almost seamlessly segued into nonpartisan journalism. It’s unfathomable to imagine a Republican of equal stature reinventing himself in such a manner... From where I sit, the truth is it’s much easier for a liberal to make this transition. Conservatives tend to get pigeonholed; liberals tend to get second acts.... This double standard isn’t exclusive to TV talent — or even individual reporters who attempt mid-career leaps from politics to journalism. If you ever see a reference to the Huffington Post next to one about "the conservative blog The Daily Caller," you'll know this also applies to entire media outlets. It’s a subtle and pervasive framing that serves as a sort of “trigger warning” to readers. (And to frustrated conservatives, this need to constantly label us feels like an ideological microaggression). This is exactly right. A conservative long ago pointed out that liberals are introduced as experts -- neutral politically, but dripping with the Authority of Science! -- whereas conservatives are introduced as "conservatives" or "pundits." So the media always sets up this contest: Between cool reason, expertise, and Science! on one side, and animal political impulses on the other. What claim does Ezra Klein have to be an "expert"? Sean Davis shares my zeal in credentials-shaming: He is merely a BA holder in the notoriously weak and soft major of Political Science. (Poli Sci to get by, we used to say.) Sarah Kliff, the former Washington Post neutral "health care wonk" who said she wasn't covering Gosnell because it was a "local crime story"? You know her credentials? Another BA holder, in one of those Choose Your Own Adventure mixed degrees in "Philosophy/Neuroscience/Psychology." Don't be overimpressed. Fake, make-'em-up degrees blending two or three different disciplines tend to be extremely superficial in all of them. Obviously, someone who has an actual major in Chemistry is going to have a deeper level of understanding that someone with a hybrid make-em-up degree in Chemistry/English Literature/Geography. Meanwhile, David Hogberg is an actual Ph.D., specializing in the healthcare field. He's got a book about Medicare's Victims. What would the Washington Post call him, though? I'm thinking: Conservative health care critic. Avik Roy, an expert in the filed who attended Yale Medical School (not sure about his actual degree, though), is likewise a Conservative Critic of Obamacare, not, like BA Poli Sci idiot Ezra Klein, an "expert." It never stops. They are constantly festooning themselves with Fake Credentials and Made-Up Titles while denigrating their more learned rivals as mere political blowhards. Even Matt K. Lewis' column protesting this very syndrome is ghettoized and Otherized as just more Hot Talk from a non-expert Political Yahoo: His post appears in a Washington Post ghetto called, get this, The Outrage Machine. Yes, that's right. Even as Lewis protests the denigration of conservatives by shunting them off in niche areas with Trigger Warnings for Ignorant and Unscientific Claims, they put his protest in a section called The Outrage Machine. Klein and Kliff, on the other hand, a pair of outrageous and bumbleheaded partisans of the first water (as you can see from their sage work at Vox), were always the Washington Post's "Wonkblog" writer and "Health Care" writer. But Lewis? He's an Outrage-y Shouty Person Who Is Here to Entertain You With His Silly Religious Archaisms. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Ace, terrific post. I especially love this:
[liberals] "dripping with the Authority of Science!" Here are some things some of my friends in the Party of Science believe: - low-intensity radio waves probably cause cancer, even if no physical mechanism for them to do so has been identified; - genetically modifying plants is entirely different than the genetic modification that goes on naturally; - radioactivity from Fukushima has had major health effects here. Now here's what I believe, which makes me "anti-Science" even though I am a scientist: CO2 might not be the principal driver of climate, the Control Knob. We know the problem with most everything lies at the feet of the Media.
But the Media is like the weather; everyone talks about it but no one does anything. And unlike the weather, the Media could be changed. Or at least nullified to some extent. But those that could don't want to be bothered or don't see the problem. Those that can't are too wide spread and leaderless. So it goes on. To complain about it is to face one's own impotence on the subject. Hell even some that could make changes and have tried have failed. They've become a force of nature that one must allow for and attempt to anticipate it's excesses and damages. Posted by: Jakee308 at June 11, 2015 04:17 PM (zRby/) 60

J. David Cox, president of the American Federal of Government Employees, said in a letter to OPM director Katherine Archuleta that based on OPM's internal briefings, the hackers stole military records and veterans' status information, address, birth date, job and pay history, health insurance, life insurance, and pension information; age, gender, race data.
The union said it is basing its assessment on internal OPM briefings. The agency has sought to downplay the damage, saying that only limited personally identifying information was breached. "We believe that Social Security numbers were not encrypted, a cybersecurity failure that is absolutely indefensible and outrageous," the letter said. "Based on the sketchy information OPM has provided, we believe that the Central Personnel Data File was the targeted database, and that the hackers are now in possession of all personnel data for every federal employee, every federal retiree, and up to one million former federal employees." Shit politicians, bad programs, unfair policies, etc. can all be easily eliminated after we get rid of the press that protects and promotes them. Identify, isolate, humiliate and expose the individuals in the press. By making one a walking joke, you can change the behavior of a hundred. Let the name "Ezra Klein" be a punchline. Make it so that people point and laugh when he walks into a room. Then move on to the next one. So much more effective than pointlessly bitching about the mega issues. But of course greedy, corrupt capitalists are the main support of the Democrats, since they are only interested in short term, self interested goals, and co-opting big government is how they achieve that. Okay, let's say you spend 2 hours, 3 times a week, 52 weeks a year taking only one subject, say chemistry. Very, very knowledgeable instructor and you're a good student.
Also do 3 or 4, call them seminars, under other very knowledgeable instructors. Hmm, you also compete 10-12 times a year against, say, 32 other students taking tests and 80% of the time end up in the top three with many firsts and seconds. I wonder, would your chemistry knowledge be the equivalent of a BA or masters? Posted by: teej at June 11, 2015 04:40 PM (H8mJH) 176

In general, conservatives, acknowledge the limits of knowledge. That is to say, a centrally planned economy seems really stupid because we have at least some glimmering of howvery much we don't know, and how much we simply can't know. There is no way for one person, or even a group of people, to effectively manage an economy. Liberals can't seem to grasp this basic fact at all. They refuse to acknowledge the limits of what they know, or what is even knowable. They are progressive, in that they are simply hopeful that progress will solve the immense problems they create when they make policy. That is to say, some smart businessman, scientist, or whatever will figure out the problem. Posted by: PT Barnum at June 11, 2015 04:47 PM (/EkKm) 203

The Senate Appropriations Committee added $322 million in commissary funding back into its fiscal 2016 defense budget plan Thursday, with the panel's top Democrat describing the initial lowball funding total as a White House "cheap shot" at military families.
The decision puts both House and Senate appropriators on record as backing $1.4 billion in funding for commissary operations next year, a total that would avoid forced store closings, reduced operating hours and potential layoffs of staff. This includes background investigations for military personnel, civilian personnel who work for DOD, and military contractors. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) conducts Security Clearance Investigations for most other branches of the Federal Government.
There were plans to transfer DOD Security Investigations from DSS to OPM, beginning in 2003. However, in March 2004, OPM announced those plans were scrapped. Whether or not OPM will take over the function in the future is unclear." Posted by: SMFH at it all at June 11, 2015 04:56 PM (kmtse) 246

Seriously. Environmentalism has morphed from caring about conserving natural resources into a fundamentalist religion. If you don't believe, you should be burned at the stake for denialism.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 11, 2015 05:19 PM (9HoBs) It occurs to me that this is just a way to present the left's mindset - stepping into the shoes of the progressive - as they believe themselves to be the absolute authority of what are valid thoughts and beliefs. The rest, as a consequence, being worthy of mockery and shame. I don't think it was a normative statement about the value of religious beliefs, generally. I know you're working the field,. Amish Dude, and I'm glad for you. "ManBearPig deniers."
I swear I saw in the deep liberal heart of San Francisco a car with a bumper sticker reading, "WE MUST ALL STOP MANBEARPIG". Oh! And, I also saw a bumper sticker the other day which had the iconic likeness of Reagan, and "AVENGE ME!!!" A few sparks of nonconformity amidst the suffocating liberal "issue consensus" which pervades the place. Posted by: torquewrench at June 11, 2015 05:26 PM (noWW6) 327

Klein figured out that all he had to do to sell himself to mainstream media as a "health care wonk" was to master the jargon and learn the arguments of the "pro" side. He never had an original thought that I heard of - if he did, he kept it to himself.
And virtually every single result he predicted for Obamacare was wrong, most of them completely the opposite of reality. Yet instead of being laughed off the internet, he gets $10 million from leftist GE CEO and crony capitalist Jeff Immelt to start Vox. Posted by: Adjoran at June 11, 2015 05:29 PM (QIQ6j) 335

Hey, Ace ... I have an idea:
I'm going to start a Kickstarter to purchase the Washington Post. I expect every conservative billionaire - you know the ones supporting Lindsey Graham's presidential ambitions, for example - to kick in $10 million each. Shouldn't be too hard to rause $300 million or so. We only need 30 conservative billionaires. Once I've purchased the Washington Post, I'm going to fire the entire staff. All of them. Even the paperboys. We're hiring all new staff. You're going to be our Political Expert. I'm going to change the name of the newspaper to the Washington Spades HQ. We're going to locate ourselves in a new building (since the existing one is bugged). We're going to sell tickets at $100 a pop. And then we're going to burn down the Washington Post. How much are you willing to kick in, Ace? Because this is how you change the liberal media into a conservative media and take control of the narrative. Klein is a smug little schmuck that has had everything handed to him because of his father. He is also a schmeckle. He is incapable of being objective, and he is one of those activist journalists that is under the delusion that his world view is the default setting for what is considered to be mainstream public opinion. Well, it's not. To make matters worse, Klein is one of those lefties that was brought up to be a lefty and never once questioned everything he was being spoonfed. In other words, he is a product of his environment, and there is not one original thought, idea, or concept that has ever spilled from his mouth or oozed from his pen.

In your zeal to shame Klein, you took a cheap pot shot at Political Science. Maybe your alma mater had a crappy soft program, but there are many stellar departments across the country with brilliant faculty and very demanding curriculum. Bad form, Ace. Badly done.
