The most accurate headline you'll read today:

The Hill: Republicans fear they will win ObamaCare court battle

Sen. Ron Johnson (R) has proposed legislation to extend subsidies until August 2017 and repeal the Affordable Care Acts requirements to buy and provide insurance. Thirty-one Republican senators have co-sponsored the measure, including McConnell.

"My bill is a transition piece of legislation that will allow the American people a voice in what our health care system will look like beyond the 2016 election," Johnson said in a statement. "It acknowledges political realities by preventing turmoil and disruptions should the Supreme Court rule subsidies cannot be paid through federal exchanges."

20 Building The New Dark-Age Mind

I once read a great, pithy description of the Dark Ages: It was a time when mankind forgot everything they already knew.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, in an age where cooling means warming, men can become women by saying so, free expression means the relentless suppression of free thinking, etc. etc. ad nauseam.

My little fuzzy yellow kitty guy just brought a good-sized mouse in the house. As usual, I yell and chase, trying to get him to take it back outside, but, no, he drops the mouse and then goes outside, without it. As usual. At least this time it was dead and I didn't have to chase it; those scenes are always "hilarious."

I try to explain, no mouse INside. Keep your mouses OUTside. (Inside and outside are words we have tried to teach all the pets.) He's dining on it OUTside now. Kittehs - they're so cuuuute... most of the time... little killer carnivores.

They're afraid that all gun laws that 'infringe' on the right to bare arms would overturn all gun laws. They're tired of arguing the same issue over and over. They don't want to have everything (Gary Oldman scream) come to the Supreme Court to be decided.

Please tell me how she didn't have access to Planned Parenthood prior to her 2nd trimester.

If by access you mean "money to pay for it" then we need to redefine our concept of personal responsibility. If I buy a car, it breaks down, and I can't afford to fix it - does this mean I don't have access to a mechanic and it is the state's responsibility to pay for it? What about the dad?

The whole "choice" argument has always annoyed me because there are so many choices one makes *before* getting pregnant, such as:
- Whether or not to have sex
-With whom to have sex (will he support you if he impregnates you?)
-When to have sex (time of month)
- Which birth control method(s) to use to prevent pregnancy.

Not getting why other are responsible for the pregnancy (terminating it) when the mother and gather have all these choices in the matter.

We choose a candidate when we vote. So, choice is fundamental to democracy. So, anyone who questions any choice by anybody else is anti-democratic. To oppose abortion (which we now call "choice") is the same as denying people the right to vote. Actually, it's exactly the same. The ultimate man cave: Father spends three years and $50,000 creating fantasy basement complete with sword rack, suits of armor and even a secret passage behind a bookcase

Tyler Kirkham, 32, from Utah, began the fantasy-themed basement in 2012, kitting it out with a $20,000 cinema system, $8,000-worth of stone and masonry, and even a crossbow worth $250. The 1,500sq ft room also has a $15,000 bathroom complete with its own waterfall.

202 I had a hilarious call from the then wife. "There's a large, dead...animal...in the trash can.

Got home and found it was an opossum. Also not dead, just playing possum. So of course I assume it's rabid and it will be my manly job to dispatch it. Shotgun too loud, so I opt for .22 with a varmint round.

Drag the garbage can out back to the woods. Tip it over. Brace for the charge of an angry rabid possum. And it just trotted away calmly into the woods.

I still have no idea how it got in the trash can.
Posted by: Bandersnatch at June 09, 2015 09:38 AM (JtwS4)

Actually, possums apparently don't get rabies.

Not sure how that works but they just don't seem to.

However, they have mega-filthy mouths and a bite is liable to go mega-septic.

I learned this from our vet when our pooch decided to protect us from the large-frigging possum in our backyard.

That had to be the highpoint of her life - her tail was wagging at 4200wps during the whole thing

and though the possum ultimately got away, she pranced around like the Queen of May for a good 2 hrs.

229 Med used in the JWF link is misoprostol, which is not an abortion pill, per se. It's a prostaglandin med used to treat many conditions..it's used to induce uterine contractions, but it doesn't cause fetal demise directly, and is commonly used to induce labor in term pregnancies, and to expel products of conception in early or spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) or following delivery.

The prostaglandin misoprostol is useful for managing stomach ulcers or GI tract bleeding from NSAIDS.

279 Neil deGrasse Tyson news just came on my Twitter. He told a 6-year-old girl to go into the kitchen and bang pots and pans. He also said that when her parents tell her to stop that she should tell them to not tell to stop.

Further NdT advice: Jump into puddles. Also advised telling her parents to not forbid her from jumping into puddles.

280 This whole thing with the cop in McKinney is making me tired.

Even the edited video they're showing on the news (which seems designed to make the cop look bad) shows that he didn't do anything wrong.

1- It was one cop surrounded by a (potentially violent) mob. Yes, he resorted more quickly to deadly force (drawing your weapon counts as deadly force in TX) than he might have if it had been just him and one punk kid.

2- He was in the middle of attempting to subdue one suspect when the boy in question moved toward him unexpectedly. The boy says he was pushed, and the video shows he could have been - but that is irrelevant.

3- As soon as his backup went after the boy who ran, he reholstered his weapon, and went back to attempting to subdue the woman in question.

The racial aspect is laughable on its face (absent gratuitously bad editing by the media), and the "excessive force" aspect is nearly as laughable. He did exactly what we expect cops to do- protect himself (drawing his weapon) but not shooting someone who is not a threat. The only injuries in the event, as far as I can discern, occurred *before* the cops showed up.

281 I'm not a Rubio supporter, but these NYT's hit pieces are beyond stupid.

1) He had student debt, but paid it off
2) He has a mortgage on his house
3) He got an $800k advance, but used 10% of it to buy a boat

And that's not the worst of it. People are affirmatively tweeting this shit as though it's disqualifying. "HE CAN'T MANAGE HIS PERSONAL FINANCES!!!" Guess he should have gotten a personal loan from a shady individual to buy his house, or maybe traded in cattle futures.

Related: A.J. Delgado is calling anyone who mocks the NYTimes about its stupid Rubio hit pieces "Rubio-bots". Notwithstanding that her snark and name-calling are juvenile and unoriginal, does anyone know which candidate she has a hard-on for? Because I can't figure it out. 337 I hadn't heard this

The most solid confirmations of the military success in Iraq were the intercepted messages from al-Qaida operatives in Iraq to their leaders in Pakistan that there was no point in sending more insurgents, because they now had no chance of prevailing against American forces.

This was the situation that Barack Obama inherited --- and lost.

Rubio (watch me promise not to consider amnesty to get elected and break my promise, and now promise again cause lofo's rule !) and Walker (gee I have reached my forties lived through 911 and never had a thought in my head about foreign policy, but I'll go to the Cato institute for a quickie course in what I should think and what my principles are and how to locate the Middle East on a map) are not ready for the presidency. Rubio probably needs a few more years of seasoning. But as Obama showed, you have to strike while the iron is hot. Rubio's time may be now.

I would prefer that Rubio remain in the Senate. I think he has a good role to play there. He has a legitimate chance now, but if he doesn't get it and he is not selected VP, I'm not sure where he goes from here. FL Gov?

I walk up to one of the cans (open 55G barrel) and it hisses at me. Mama Possum had evidently crawled up a tree next to the can, dropped in, and couldn't get out. She was unhappy.

I pondered a bit.

I loaded the can on the back of the flatbed. Then I shook the can up real good and slammed it down on its side. There was the rat-tail sticking out from under the garbage. Perfect, my young idiot self thought.

With one mule-gloved hand, I grabbed a bunch of garbage and, insulated with that, held her neck, and with the other hand grabbed the tail and yanked real hard, throwing her well away from the truck. Then, I scrambled up onto the flatbed, rather hastily.

She was not terribly grateful. She stalked off, staring at me and hissing. I say she because, as she walked away, it looked like she really needed to nurse some babies.

Hard labor job, mostly, but great working in the park all summer. Only time I ever saw a road-runner was there. Turned on to the road going down to the dump, and there, standing on a rock, looking almost like the cartoon, was this amazing, spindly bird. I blinked, and literally in that blink, it disappeared.

Thus:

Taking a ridiculously callow youth who uses "Dude" as a form of address during a national television interview on a life or death subject, who has absolutely no experience with the military, intelligence, or foreign policy communities, whose prior experience with government consists of having been a campaign van driver, and elevating said individual to an executive position on the National Security Council.

Suffice it to say that during a Republican administration, the press would have had some things to say about that. Rather a lot of things. Pointed things. Acidic things.

During a Democratic administration?

We've got to remember, even though they're attacking him, doesn't mean he's worthy of getting elected. We should stay focused on the small number of candidates who seem to have the most integrity, ie. Cruz, Walker, Paul. Even though those 3 are all problematical, not as much as Rubio or any of the others, IMHO.

And I still can't believe in this day of teh interwebs, we still haven't seen a real conservative who is able to bypass the need for massive funding and get the necessary visibility by, say, facebook.

Quit going in there when MCD corporate rebranded themselves as the preferred fast food of urban yoof, with a huge hip-hop marketing campaign.

It wasn't long at all before the stories of horrific spontaneous violence in the franchises began to appear in the news. People beaten to death by other patrons. No thanks. I want no part of that crowd.

I had a possum in the kitchen once. Woke up at 4am with a strange
feeling, went into the kitchen and found my cat trying to play with it.

I guess he thought it was a new pet.

*
*
My big black cat, Wolf, was once an outdoor cat until I took him in. One day he encountered a possum outside. They looked each other over, then went calmly in opposite directions. I'm glad to know Wolf is smart enough not to tangle with a wild animal, and pleased the possum didn't want to fool with a cat bigger than he was.
