There was a passing comment in the last thread about not understanding Wisconsin. I have had a theory for years that cold climates have a totally different understanding of helping neighbors than people who live in temperate climes -- where the outside will not kill you 4-6 months of the year.
I really think that is why the colder areas have such a strong 'socialist' lean. A totally different attitude where when the snow melts finding homes with a dead family and animals. Somebody smarter than I could articulate this better, but I think that is such an important point, people in warmer or more populated areas simply do not understand why and how those attitudes are prevalent. But that doesn't have to mean government help. It's hot here and some guy randomly came over and fixed my car enough so I could drive it to the shop. Didn't have to ask, just stood there (possibly dramatically) asking my brother if I needed to call a tow truck. Southerners are pretty helpful friendly people, on a personal level. Is there any reason why cold might equal a need for help from the government? Posted by: Lea at June 08, 2015 10:12 AM (lIU4e) 67

I'm reminded ot a great line from "Thank You For Smoking". The tobacco lobbyist explains to his son what he does for a living. They simulate a debate, and the lobbyist veers wildly off on a tangent. Goes like this: NYC is another State in most respects. There's quite literally no cultural continuity. Albany is the creature of NYC. So what's Wisconsin's deal? Seriously, I want to know. I get the impression that, while in NYC if you're not "of the body" you're mostly excluded and belittled, in WI its more like bricks through your window, cops throwing you in jail or killing you/your dog, getting your house burned down, etc. Much more serious consequences. Think of when the Midwestern cold states were settled vs cold state coast. New, different and exciting (not always for the best). But note that the colder areas are more independent than the coasties.
I just think that the jello salad crew has a different take on 'community' responsibility than the older cold areas. I'm not very articulate and usually rely on other posters to get ideas across -- somebody come and save me! Wisconsin is a state in transition from stranglehold blue to red(dish). Power is never ceded willingly, and the leftists who've held sway here are merely showing that. We've had republican majorities in the past who have had a hands off approach to the public unions and state employees, who've considered themselves for untouchable. I think the sensible voters of Wisconsin saw fiscal crises coming. The last governor shamelessly emptied every dedicated fund, (and should probable have been up on charges for it) putting off what he knew to be a problem for the next governor. He didn't even run for re-election despite polling showing he'd probable win.
He knew how bad it was. The citizens knew, even the folks who were affected by Act 10, knew. They just expected a massive tax hike to take care of things. Democrats in Madison were positively drooling over watching R's vote for a big tax hike. That was part of the reason they didn't want to negotiate a budget in good faith. How will this accident affect the cost? Bacon prices are already so murky, we can only afford "bacon" made from turkey. Bacon-flavored strips of pressed and refried bird. Oh, and apparently the show of force from the police came when the teenagers in question refused to sit down on the curb and continued to escalate the situation.
Let's put that in perspective. Two murderous biker gangs who'd just been involved in a massive shoot out were able to follow the cops' directions and sit down and shut up. Teenage wannabe thugs, however, decided to challenge that order. That's really pretty incredible and shows the, shall we say, entitlement, that we're dealing with here. http://bit.ly/1MBRIWf video at newsbusters.org link above quote: I can promise you from here on in this show will not be edgy. Edgy was a term created to pawn stupid stuff of as cool when it's just plain bad, like probiotic yogurt. Edgy commentary pretends to be risky -- mocking the faithful, taking jabs at things people fought and died for: That's not risk, it's a costume for the vacuous. These days risk is doing something the media derides: Saying you love this country, cops are awesome, our military rules, identity is silly. All of that creates a smirk, stretching from the Upper West Side to the backyards of Brentwood, a snickering dismissal of an intellectual class trained by the Comedy Central applause sign. good stuff Posted by: artisanal 'ette at June 08, 2015 11:29 AM (qCMvj) 279

Trying to introduce the cast, while describing the event, advancing the plot (small town is quarantined/fenced off after people start to drop dead at astronomical rates, with no symptoms or apparent cause of death), it all gets a bit jumbly and disjointed. The way over the top Government reaction so far has potential to be the best part. Going to give episode 2 a go.

Unrelated, but sort of related. When I lived on a desert ranch I learned how to take a "shower" with 2 1/2 gallons of water.
1. Get naked and have a face cloth with body scrub ready. Outside or in the tub. 2. Carefully pour about 3/4 gallon of water (warmed in the sun if you wish) over your body to wet it and the wash cloth. 3. Soap your hair and entire body with the body scrub/facecloth 4. Rinse slowly with the remaining 1 3/4 gallons of water. Tiny bit of vinegar in the last bit of water helps to rinse if desired. 5. Stand naked in the hot desert wind to dry off. That's a beautiful painting of nature. It's a shame that so few care about such beauty. Too many seem to think that it is their right to destroy, pollute, and warm the planet. What's worse is those Christians who see no problem in doing so. Man is at the top, yes. That doesn't mean God wants us to go on a spree of death and destruction.
