54 Cooped up inside for two days this week because of rain that would pause but never end. Sunny this morning.

While indoors, discovered the wonders of the free KODI video streamer. A housemate installed it on an Amazon Fire TV stick (like a Roku, only smaller) Kodi runs alongside the usual Netflix/Amazon Instant Video/Hulu/Crackle etc. So I installed the PC version on my laptop.

SO many sources, so much stuff. Every cable series from HBO and the other premiums. Every Netflix and Amazon excusive. Every BBC and ITV programme that never got picked up by an American service. Every time the copyright police shut down one pirate streamer, two more take its place. And there's one super-arching search function that looks for a 1940s B movie across 100+ repositories.

In principle, I oppose this wholesale plundering of the Hollywood megacorps. But I'm kind of awestruck by the compounded results of many tiny infringements.

77 News of the Normandy invasion reached my Dad's unit in Italy quickly. The entry from his diary for that day, (fresh on the heels of the liberation of Rome two days earlier) captured some of the sense of optimism that this would be the beginning of the end, including the expectation that the Russians would open up offensively:

June 6, 1944

First news this morning was the invasion. Really sounded good. I'll bet Gerry doesn't last long now. The beauty of the thing is this is no small scale operation. We have enough troops and tanks and planes to move right on.

With our front cracked wide open** Gerry has lots of worry on his mind. Now if "Joe" only decides to open up we'll have the thing pretty well sewed up. Corps Arty moved again today. This time to a "villa" about a mile and a half across the river, just west of the Vatican. Nobody knows where anyone else is. Everybody, it seems, has one idea in mind and that is to head north. Our leading elements are 25 miles beyond Rome. PW count is beyond all expectation. Over 2500 came in in one day. Latest VI Corp count, which is incomplete, is 8,028 as of yesterday.

**(the breakout at Anzio and the recapture of Rome had occurred mere days before the D-day landings)

Corps Arty- VI Corps Artillery
PW- Prisoner of War

83 Let's detail the past week at Chez Gingy and Dave:
My car in to the garage Monday for routine work. Drive pickup instead. Friend arrives to stay 12 days between old and new apartments.
Tuesday, put in offer on future home. Contractor arrives to drywall and mud the spot where we had a wall removed last week in prep for our new floors.
Wednesday: mechanic says car's not starting mysteriously, will keep at it. Offer accepted!
Waterproofiing needed. Guy comes to look. This is gonna be expensive but I can't sell a house that floods in the basement when it rains.
Thursday: begin to paint, pack, etc for staging. Spill paint in my cleavage, because of course I do.
Friday: pickup won't start, have to drive Dave's car to take Little to school. Mechanic calls, says my car's computer is fried. Weigh pros and cons, car shop, ultimately decide to fix it. Mechanic comes to pull codes from truck to diagnose. Awesome mechanic, by the way. Can't figure it out.
Find out there's a kick out clause to our home contract in which we can have 48 hours to remove contingency (sale of our existing home) or make good our offer (pay down payment of $25k); seller can still market.
Drink beer.

Saturday: awakened, again, by the friggin birds at 5:00. Just like every day.

It has been a week.

105 I haven't posted these devotionals in a while, and I feel someone might find this helpful today. Maybe I'm that person. :^)

I would have just put a link, but my computer is not allowing that.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding,
Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)

Jeremiah 29:11-13 New International Version (NIV)

11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares
the Lord, "plans to proper you and not to harm
you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then
you will call on me and come and pray to me, and
I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find
me when you seek me with all your heart.

Many years ago I was sitting on a boat deck at a youth camp. I had been having a bad day; everything seemed to be doing wrong. Feeling sad, I looked down the river. The sun was just setting, and it caused a reflection of the trees in such a way that i looked as if the river ended there. However, having been down the river many times, I knew that after turning at an almost 90-degree angle, the river did continue beyond that point.
This experience reminded me of the many times in life that we feel we have reached a dead end in a situation -- where a job or a relationship or any situation that makes us feel as if our path is leading nowhere. During times like these it helps to remember that God knows what lies ahead. God can see the whole river and know that just around the bend lies something better. So when it looks as if life is not leading anywhere, we can trust God and then persevere around that bend in the river.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, when we feel uncertain of the way ahead, help us to trust you -- knowing that you will for our lives is much better than we can ever hope or imagine. Amen.

Lia Evans (South Australia, Australia)

From the May 16th devotional from "The Upper Room"

Keep on praying!

Truscott was leading troops that had come ashore on Anzio. He desperately wanted to advance as there was absolutely zero opposition on the beach.

He was overruled by the overall commander John P. Lucas who insisted on digging in and consolidating the beachhead. Instead of chasing and routing the Germans, we had stalemate, blood and carnage for 6 months.

Truscott was racked with guilt all his life for not ignoring Lucas.

Truscott was one of Patton's subordinates in VII Army. Patton always had his men on the sharp end of the spear (or shit end of the stick). By all accounts, Truscott was a very capable general but not a publicity seeker like Patton.

Truscott is portrayed as being peeved at Patton in the movie.

I hear ya! Check out the Shur-Line paint supplies. They have a pad for edge painting and one for corners too. For years I used to paint the walls and then go around and do all the trim. Found out not long ago that I was doing it all wrong.

Paint your trim first and you don't have to worry about going onto the wall with the paint. When the trim's done, use a Shur-Line edge painting tool to zip through all the straight lines like above the baseboard, around windows, and where the wall meets the ceiling. Then use a Shur-Line corner painter to tackle all the corners. Then get out your roller and you're done!

And no, I have no stock in Shur-Line.

I feel that for Americans Christians he is the person whose writings they should be reading after the Bible, or rather with the Bible. A river devotional! Nice.

I had said a couple weeks ago that I was thankful for the summer camp/classes that my kids are doing and that I would NOT complain about driving around this year.

The very first morning, we got stopped by a train and then on the alt. route found two streets closed down.

Yesterday it took us an hour to get home. Two main roads closed meant everyone was on that one road...I'd never cut through an Air Force base to avoid traffic before.

But the place they were at this week is just starting to flood a tiny bit and the place that is completely closed will hopefully reopen soon without damage before we're scheduled to be back there.

So. Still thankful, esp. for the very limited damage here.

Thankful, with lots of deep breathing to remember the thankfulness.

164 How I miss the old morning ag reports on radio -- a nearby town was an official "Port of Entry" for grain, so farmers around here really used that market "data." And every morning a bright-voiced announcer would inform us all that "bellies are firm in Chicago." Those were the days.

Truscott was depicted as plump and trussed-up in the Patton movie; if you look up his picture, this does not appear to be the case. He was every bit as fastidious about his own uniform (and his departures from uniform regs) as Patton was, and trained his men even harder than Patton did. Founded the Rangers. He'd drunk acid as a child, so had the voice Patton wished he had. Mauldin's biggest impression of Patton was his screechy, womanish voice. Not like the movies.

167 Me: FenelonSpoke's thesis of the day.

FS: LOL. Well, by length it might be considered heading in that direction. ;^) but I can't claim it as mine.

Heh, in haste I was trying to remember "devotional" and all I could come up with was "sermon" - "thesis" stepped up and said, "Put me in, coach," so I did.

[Interrupted and belatened by stopping to feed the pesks.]

It's -- somewhat a strain for me to not wax cynical when I read devotionals that reinforce what I've known and tried to live by for decades, only to meet constant defeat and feel like I've never known the right way, much less followed it. I could write a thesis m'self....

I think I have found the essence of the problem. It's that still, small voice behind me that whispers, "this is the way." So, I say, oh? okay! and I turn around and head that way, and I hear that voice behind me again, so I turn around....

walk around in circles... walk around in circles...

170 @161 Sarah, I recently had to change out a basement drain trap that had been pierced by an earlier snake-head (ooh). Various cleaning implements could not get through because it was sucked full of mud, and sometimes the snake would just go through the hole into Mother Earth. That one was made of baked ceramic (surprisingly, except for the broken piece it was in great shape) but I can certainly see a tub trap getting corroded enough to have a hole in it. Sounds like you're going to have to have a hard look underneath there.

See diagram of the tub plumbing. Going in down the overflow gives you a straigt shot, trying to go down the hole usually binds:

173 So does anyone know why the snake won't go through a trap,in a tub drain? It just won't go,through.>>>

There can be extra stuff inside the pipe for the drain plug and also there is a right angle prior to the P trap.

Also: snake? Why in my day we used a bent coat-hanger and a bit of elbow grease.

"Course, those were hard times....

175 New topical post up. This is still the open thread.

Hello? Hello?

176 MWW-

Someone is waiting for me, so I have to run.

You have been through (from what you're shared in your posts) a long slog, trying to do a good thing. You're probably really drained and frustrated. That's not a good time to evaluate whether you've known the right road and followed it. You know in whom you believe, You are following the right path-the way, the truth and the life. I will continue to pray for you.

177 Oh, sure, FS, just bless 'n' run. That's just like you.

Have a fine day.
