Quote of the Day I

Privilege is not the same thing as "entitlement." Entitlement means taking one's advantages in life for granted, as if they are part of the normal order of things, and not realizing where they came from or what made them possible. Which usually means frittering away all of those advantages by failing to take the initiative to accomplish anything of your own.

In fact, one of the most important advantages you can give your kids is a lack of entitlement, the ethos of knowing that he has to work for what he wants in life. One of the great secrets of the middle class strivers is that they realize lack of entitlement is a "privilege" that will give their children a leg up on the spoiled rich kids.

-- Robert Tracinski in Privilege Comes Dressed in Overalls and Looks Like Work

Quote of the Day II

Look, many have been angry at me because I refuse to be angry, bitter, or full of grievances, and some will be angry at you for not becoming agents in their most recent cynical causes. Don't worry about it. No monuments are ever built to cynics. Associate with people who add to your lives, not subtract; people you are comfortable introducing to the best people in your lives-your parents, your family, your friends, your mentors, your ministers.

-- Justice Clarence Thomas to the 2008 graduating class of the University of Georgia

Rand Paul: 'ISIS Exists Because of the Hawks in Our Party'

And so Rand manages to disqualify himself from the nomination nearly a year before the first vote is ever cast. This is from his Wednesday appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe.

"I would say it's exactly the opposite. ISIS exists and grew stronger because of the hawks in our party who gave arms indiscriminately, and most of those arms were snatched up by ISIS," said Paul. "These hawks also wanted to bomb Assad, which would have made ISIS's job even easier. They created these people."

Why is this disqualifying?

1. He's simply wrong. The US did not create ISIS. At worst you could point to certain opposition groups and their US-arranged arms falling under the control of ISIS but that is NOT creation in any sense. And whatever blame for the marginal impact this might have had on ISIS's strength falls on the Obama administration rather than the GOP members of congress that Rand disagrees with.

2. It's a revealing sign that Rand does buy into the world-view of his father - which has always been my concern about him. Here I'll note that his comment reveals a 'Blame America First' attitude that you'd expect to see coming from another party's candidate. This is also why when it comes to foreign foreign policy the Left and the Libertarian party's point of view are functionally equivalent. It's the narcissism of seeing America as first causes of everything bad in the world.

3. He handed a sound-bite weapon to the Democrats for no good reason. Part of being a qualified candidate is discipline and the ability to keep from being trolled by the media, the opposition, and even by your own self. Rand failed.

I've allowed Rand and his campaign a few days to 'correct' these statements or just admit he goofed and retract them but so far nothing. Plus you also have the fact that his PAC just released a Birther attack on Ted Cruz.

So I'm done with Rand Paul for president. That doesn't mean that there's not a place for him in the GOP and politics - but clearly that place should not be the White House.

Feminist Pundit: Why I Make Men Pay For Dates

Could it be because she accepts heteronormative  gender roles of courtship or perhaps just wants a man who can treat her nice? Nope - you see it's all a form of reparations for male privilege.

In other words, a man who pays for a date is merely compensating for society's imbalance and inequality. He is restoring equality. This is especially true in dating White or Asian men who - statistically speaking - has a weekly median income of nearly 2-3 times that of women of color.

I have a feeling that paying for dates would only be the first of many, many reparations that a boyfriend of Ms. Drayton would be on the hook for.

Hillary's Old Friend, Sid Vicious

I've heard it said that Blumenthal's legendary viciousness was a response to attacks against the Clintons during the 1990s - "the Clinton Wars," as he calls them - which featured some pretty wild conspiracy allegations against the First Couple. Don't believe it.

During the 1980s, Blumenthal became alarmed by the rise of conservatism as an intellectual-political movement. As a reporter for the Washington Post, he attacked those whom he viewed as in the vanguard of that movement, especially, it seemed, if they happened to be Jewish. Among his targets were Elliott Abrams (who, Blumenthal thought, didn't take John Lennon's death seriously enough), Richard Perle, Michael Ledeen, and David Horowitz, who writes about Sid's viciousness here.

...Blumenthal's vehicle for attacking the Ledeens, and many other conservatives, was a lawsuit he filed against Matt Drudge, who had accused Sid of beating his wife (Drudge would retract the accusation). Blumenthal had his lawyer subpoena for deposition Michael and Barbara Ledeen and approximately two dozen other critics of the Clintons. He also subpoened the records of the Independent Women's Forum.

Blumenthal's purposes were two-fold. First, he wanted to harass the Clintons' critics. Second, he wanted to conduct a fishing expedition into "the vast right wing conspiracy" that he and Hillary had invented.

The fact that Hillary kept Blumenthal on the Clinton payroll all the way to the present tells you exactly what kind of person she is and what a Hillary presidency would be like.

California OSHA to Require Goggles on Porn Stars

Last week, California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHA) proposed a new raft of safety standards for porn production sets in the state, raising ire and eyebrows in the process. The standards, which have yet to be finalized, fill 21 pages and detail a wide range of new safety protocols actors and their employers would have to abide by on set. Nestled among them is a provision about "eye protection." That's right, goggles. Goggles, to be worn by porn actors, in porn films.

Well I guess the goggle fetishists are gonna happy about this.

Anheuser-Busch Cans Drinking Water for TX, OK Flood Victims

I remember the local Anheuser-Busch brewery doing this during the 1994 Northridge earthquake and having their supply trucks drive through the San Fernando valley handing out cans. In fact I actually got a couple when they came by where I was living at the time. Well it turns out that this is a long-standing tradition for the company.

This is not the first time Anheuser-Busch has come to the aid of disaster-affected areas. After Hurricane Sandy, the beer company produced a whopping 44,000 cases of water for victims.

According to an ABC News report, Anheuser-Busch has been mass producing drinking water for disaster relief since the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and has donated over 70 million cans of water since 1988.

All this is exactly what is wrong with identity politics. They view and judge people as members of some group rather than as individuals. Some women make more than many men. People's income tends to be based on: level of education or job training, years of experience, level of effort put into the career, hours worked per week, luck, people you know, affirmative action policies, having parents who own a business, personality.

I know of people from prominent families who are failures. One guy in particular that I'm thinking of is white, has a law degree, and a father who was a U. S. congressman. He had difficulty making a decent living as a lawyer.

I know another white male who had a father who was a high level General Motors executive. He also had a law degree, and ended up running for some low level political office because he couldn't earn a living as a lawyer.

50 Rand Paul: 'ISIS Exists Because of the Hawks in Our Party'

That's...backward.

We decided not to do anything about the Baathist dictator in Syria, even when he was working with the Jihadis fighting us in Iraq.

But it turns out that Islam eventually tires of fascism and an Islamist insurgency he couldn't quell popped up. In Syria. The country we did not attack.

Hell, one can make a pretty strong argument that had we not toppled Saddam that ISIS would control much more of Iraq now as well...

But either way it is specifically because we played no significant role in Syria that ISIS is doing so well. Had Obama decided to side with Assad, likely he could have gotten significant concessions out of him. And if Obama had sided with no Jihadi resistance groups in a meaningful way we'd likely see those groups running most of the country. But instead Obama did what various isolationists said we should do...and he, and everyone else, are paying the price.

60 Maet, it's far wider and worse than just self-hating narcissism (in fact, with the Paul sorts, that's not really the primary element, I'd guess). It's just an ignorant and simplistic mostly fact-free "understanding" of the world in which everything happens or doesn't happen because the US does/doesn't do something.

The wider/worse mindset and incomprehension I refer to afflicts, probably, a bulk of the country, to include people on the "right" (whatever that's supposed to mean). It's part of being an unserious country.

"We created the Taliban!". WTF? No we didn't.

"We armed Saddam!" WTF? No we didn't. Unless somewhere in the US they used to make Soviet, Chinese, and Brazilian armor and South African artillery and French combat aircraft and Italian corvettes and Swedish civil defense projects and Egyptian-production AKs and on and on. In which case I want to know where the surplus and "seconds" are so I can buy some.

And on and on and on. Always a simplistic and usually completely baseless assumption that the US wsa the cause of something/nothing/everything.

The US is not an unserious country only, or even primarily, because it has (twice) elected an absurdly unfit and even bizarrely alien person to the presidency - surrounded by unfit and alien creatures to boot. It is unserious because it's institutions, and its citizens (as a whole) are unserious.

Maet, don't forget the jaw-droppingly pathetic responses of the other '16 hopefuls to the stupid Iraq counter-factual gotcha. Both that any of them would be stupid/cynical enough to do this, and that there may be a solid tactical reason for doing so in terms of appealing to the dumbed-down conventional wisdom, confirms we are in very poor shape, regardless of the passing political personalities du jour.

Posted by: rhomboid at May 31, 2015 11:38 PM (QDnY+)

Agreed. But then to fully delve into it would have been a complete post in itself. I'll just point out that there's a deep racist assumption operating here that the wogs in Foreignestan don't really have free agency and couldn't possibly have their own motivations beyond the ken and influence of the US. So it must be America that caused them to do the bad things.

Asian male Buddhist heterosexual dates White female Christian heterosexual

Mexican male Catholic homosexual dates Black male Muslim homosexual
Man #1 pays 55%, Man #2 pays 45% (because Catholic church is all repressive)

White male Christian heterosexual dates Black female Atheist bi-sexual:
Man pays 100%, Woman pays 0%

"These hawks also wanted to bomb Assad, which would have made ISIS's job even easier. They created these people.""

The last sentence is stupidity on stilts, no doubt, but the rest of his reply to Joe's charge is hard to deny.

The hawks and some Dem-dems wanted to arm groups that could not be vetted even given a million man-hours. Those groups that weren't sympathetic to jihadi fundamentalists, that became ISIS, got eaten alive.

Trying to play footsie with random jihadi assholes in the mid-east without an all-out commitment to total war is folly.

I've worked with women who, due to being moms, worked fewer hours per week, missed work days due to kids' illnesses, took time off from their careers for childbirth, picked careers that everyone knows pay less.

There's nothing wrong with any of this. I understand that a woman with a child in daycare, can't work until 6:30 in the evening, and must stay home when the kids has flu, and Lord knows, has to take time off for childbirth. But the fact is, these things affect where you go in your career. And a lot of women go into teaching so they'll be off for the summer with their kids.

There's no nasty little conspiracy afoot to keep women in poverty.

We,in fact, did arm Saddam and help him with intelligence during the Iran-Iraq war. Your memory is even worse than Obama's. This is why this country is failing, it allows idiots such as yourself, who are quite petty, daft, and just plain retarded to vote.

The only unserious person here is you. You fail at history. Things the US has done you sweep under the rug as "Wang they blame Americas for everything." Please learn to read. We are not blaming America for everything. No one is blaming America for the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan but we can sure say America funded those in Afghanistan during that time who were fighting the Soviets.

156 Rond Paul: "I was all for going after 9/11 to go after bin Laden." I could look this up, but I don't even find it plausible. Politicians against war on 9/11 reminded us that they voted for Desert Storm, whether it was true or not. When they voted against Desert Storm they told us they supported Vietnam, whether it was true or not. This short-hand of "I'm not a pacifist" is a mental shell game.

History lesson... do you know why the US Navy Retired the F-14 when we did??? and destroyed all we had???

Because we wanted to be sure IRAN, who we had previously sold some to, did not get spare parts.

The F-35 program is too large, and too multinational, to do that...

Arming the Moslem world with First Tier weapons... is just not a good Idea IMO...

ESPECIALLY when they don't need first tier weapons to run an effective air campaign....

Just a reminder here that back in the 1990s, that supergenius Bill Clinton decreed that Mexican soldiers be brought north to the States, and given the full measure of deeply classified Pentagon special operations tradecraft, so that they could help Mexico's government wipe out the narcotics cartels.

Instead, as soon as the expensively trained spec-ops Mexicans got back home south of the border, they defected from the government, and formed their own brutal new narcotraficante cartel, Los Zetas. Who are a lethal source of trouble to this day.

I also think Liberals, and Rand Paul cling to their belief system because they want to believe that they are the locus of control. IOW if we control our behavior, then we can control radical Islamic terrorists. The reality is that we cannot, and that frightens them.

They want to return to the days of when terrorism was swept under the rug. The problem is technology and terrorism rapidly advance and the possibility to retreat without a geater cost for doing so is gone.

Evil exists in the world it always has and it always will and it is never merciful to surrender.

Sure maybe Rand Paul will not have to pay the price but his policies would increase the chance that his grandchildren will.

In general, I would endorse these sentiments, but:

There was no white-shoed law firm reason for Bush to repeatedly declare that "Islam is a religion of peace."

There was no white-shoed law firm reason for Bush to enlist Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, longstanding tap roots of jihadi terror, as trusted "allies in the War On Terror".

There was no white-shoed law firm reason for Bush to invite the likes of CAIR into the Oval Office for amicable photo ops.

There was no white-shoed law firm reason for Bush to tell Tommy Franks that mosques were absolutely off limits as military targets, even if Franks had just seen Osama bin Laden himself duck inside the mosque in question.

Fallacy of the selected set. The proper way to measure this program to look at all the people trained under it and see how many went on to actually fight terrorists and how many terrorists were apprehended/killed based on their work versus how many went bad.

Requiring a zero defect standard for any program involving human beings and then declaring it an overall failure when the inevitable failure occurs is really a demand the we do absolutely nothing ever lest we get sullied by the dirt of this world and the fallen nature of man.

Glorious Soviet rule for 7 decades had its impact, and the only competent Tajik military of rank in my experience were quite unlikely to harbor jihadi impulses. In Baer's excellent first memoir he recounts how Tajik military officers were imploring the US to pay more attention to the AQ and related goings-on across the border in A'stan in the 90s. Anyone over 40 is a denatured secular sort whose vices lie mostly where you'd figure - clan loyalty and, uh, sticky fingers.

"Well, they built 76 FB's and they served with honor with SAC for 30 years"

I've never said a cross word about the -111 in that role. It's an awesome aircraft in a certain very specialized mission set.

But it was sold as a magic wand which would serve not only as an FB, but also as an air superiority interceptor, and also as a down and dirty dogfighter, and also as a ground attack mudmover. It's a dessert topping *and* a floor wax! It's a wonder that it wasn't sold as a Huey helicopter replacement too.

Both the USAF and the USN were told by the Pentagon systems analysts that they had to buy the F-111 for the air superiority and dogfighter and mudmover roles.

Both services correctly and strenuously resisted this. The USAF bought the F-15 and F-16 instead. (And, under protest, the A-10.) USN bought the F-14 and F-18 instead.

I would argue that for the most part that Bush was following the strategy that Steven Denbeste laid out here in 2003 (denbeste.nu/essays/strategic_overview.shtml) for the reasons that Denbeste explained here around the same time (www.denbeste.nu/cd_log_entries/2003/11/Threeconjectures.shtml).

315 Which Vietnam deployment?

Combat Lancer that saw six F-111As sent while the type was still working up Stateside and mired in controversy? The deployment that saw three of the six go down. Two crews killed. And the third crew that survived loss of their F-111A reported it was the TFR in Hard mode and the karst mountains of Thailand that literally pulled their plane apart.

Or the later one with F-111As which was pretty uneventful and successful?

319 The F35 to F111 comparison is in their development disasters. However well the F35 performs, it does so at an enormous cost to every other development program that isn't a submarine.

Building a program that bundles in off-shore commitments made at a level several pay grades higher than the men responsible fro program oversight must never happen again. (Except for Yucca Mountain, that one should rope in the Canucks and screw Harry Reid.)

320 For clear-eyed, hard-nosed realists, many (most?) commenters here sure do put some effort into not understanding the "religion of peace" thing.

We were (today, who knows how to describe things) in a lively tussle with one or two sides of a many-sided civil war within parts of the Islamic world.

Bush could hardly be found outside a mosque it seemed, for a while after 9/11. And US officials were constantly whispering sweet nothings, via open statements, to all and sundry in the Islamic world.

And at the same time, we and our partners in the various parts of the war were, uh, killing people, and capturing and renditioning and interrogating people, and bribing people. And (though not everywhere they should have) behind closed doors we were breaking arms to get more cooperation.

WWII and the nature of the belligerents made the beautiful bluntness of the Potsdam Declaration perfectly appropriate. This war and itsbelligerents etc. make double-talk perfectly appropriate.

Andwhile I don't see any specific connection between the over-JAG'ing of warfare and the lack of will (seriousness) in our polity, both are true and both are disastrous.

But the deck can't withstand the heat of the F-35B engine in lift mode and there is no data-link between the ship and the F-35Bs. So its going back to the dock for upgrades and another Billion dollars.

335 eman, of course that's part of it.

The other tiny, complicated and obscure part is that, well, we depend on and work closely with Muslims to kill these particular Muslims, so an AOSHQ chant like "they're all the enemy!! eleventy!!", umm, presents some peculiar difficulties if taken seriously.

The workaround, of course, is to find alternatives to the ports/airports in partner Islamic countries where we can land men and materiel, and intelligence services of Islamic regimes with assets and penetration and cultural and language capacities, and also of course non-Islamic military and police to train and work with, and then there's the non-Islamic local population to work with in fingering and killing the people that also make their lives hell.

But once we develop these workarounds we'll finally be able to drop the mask and tell it like it is. Cuz all Muslims, obviously, are the problem.

The early books came first, there was some evolution, Thunderball was actually almost simultaneous (and included another guy's concept, which lead to Never Say Never Again), and then the movies went off on their own with little connection with the books beyond the title.

Even in something like Casino Royale, however, Bond was polished and could pass in high society. As far as stock, however -- Bond was a lower-middle class bastard abandoned by his parents (I believe raised by an aunt, IIRC).

337 I think Jean the data was there. But, because the F-35 was going to be the only plane for the future, some turned blind eyes to ensure their tickets were punched for future promotion.

There are some ex-Soviet exports who have been a problem, but really only the Chechens have been material to the cause. And they're good. This problem actually may have a slow solution over time, as the Chechens with only anti-Russia experience and no Soviet-era background are generally far less impressive than their younger colleagues.

Yucca Mountain? We Canucks have our own home-grown nuclear-waste repository. Something like mine shafts a thousand meters deep into tight, dry granite of the Canadian Shield. Rock that hasn't moved much in half a billion years. Should last long enough for even the long-lived isotopes to chill right out.

I think the concept is superior to Yucca Mountain, although I also know that the concern about nuke waste is mostly hype.

So, what's the score?

Posted by: Alta at June 01, 2015 01:49 AM (r4TcS)

369 My take on the F-35 program:

It has been poorly run, partly for political reasons, and as a result it's way over budget. And the F-35A and F-35C have design compromises baked in because of the "one plane with three models" idea, which was a clear mistake in hindsight. (Lots of common parts, but custom bodies for the planes, would have been better. Let the non-B models be skinnier and fly faster.)

However, despite the expense of the program, we need to build a whole bunch of these. The R&D costs are already paid for, and now all we need to do is carry the program a little further across the finish line and build the planes. From what I have read, the cost to build an F-35 is reasonable; the absurdly high cost per plane is when you factor in the cost of the R&D. But not building planes won't get that R&D money back.

Also, the F-35B should be built in large numbers. Since we took the design hit and the cost hit to develop it, we need to run with it and gain full advantage.

Supercarriers are awesome, but they are also huge targets and I fear that if we ever go to hot war with a capable adversary that great swarms of missiles will be shot at our carriers; and even if 99% of all the missiles get stopped, the carriers would sink. It's past time to stop making super-huge and super-expensive floating targets. If only we could make much smaller ships that carried about 12 fighters and a few Ospreys and helicopters. Oh wait, we have several of those. I say, get the bugs out and build more of them... and stop building supercarriers. (And start designing new mini-carriers that are stealthy. The rule of future warfare is going to be: if you can see it, you can kill it. No stealth is perfect but it will sure help.)

The mini-carrier idea, to be fully viable, needs to have a good way to refuel an F-35B in flight. I like the idea I read in a Tyler Rogoway article, about developing Osprey tankers.

And by all means develop some good drones and put them on the mini-carriers as well. For really difficult missions, send them on one-way suicide flights (which we would not do if they had human pilots on board).

Election is a great movie. But, no... I don't feel it was based on any particular person in politics. I'm not even sure there's any overt subtext in a historical political sense... though you can find all sorts of parallels if you look hard enough. Maybe I'm wrong and the writer meant it to represent someone or some campaign, specifically... but, I didn't get it. To my non political expert eyes, it plays out like a high school election, with a satirical angle that points at politics in general. But, what do I know?

Eggs last a long time if kept cool. "Fresh"? 3 weeks.

Farm fresh? I assume they sold them after a few days laid - fresh laid eggs are kept for a few days, even on a farm . They store them on a wire rack.. can't remember the name of the thing.

Screw-ball thing I saw on a 'prepper' site; coat them in oil, store in an cool but not necessarily refrigerated area, and eggs will keep for months.

You haven't seen it??!! DAMN, man. Get ahold of it, tout d'suite. It is very, very funny. Extremely well written and acted. Probably Broderick's best showing and is an underrated 90's gem (though, it does get a lot of love... but not enough!).

Posted by: otho at June 01, 2015 02:00 AM (tBSrv)

378 IMHO it might have been a better idea if, instead of centering on the Manson case, "Aquarius" focused in the 1970s on the search for Ted Bundy.

As I understand it, Manson's cult only started getting attention from LAPD around 1966-7, when IIRC they were doing midnight quickie cheap break-in jobs in LA-area small businesses, and Charlie was caught in 1969. Whereas I've read it took literally something like 10 years for the cops to catch up with Bundy, because (among other reasons) he kept moving around.

Posted by: qdpsteve at June 01, 2015 02:00 AM (elbY7)

379 Bruce, I asked last night if anyone is watching it. I've read that Aquarius is a "limited series," i.e. 13 episodes only. Of course if it's a huge hit, I'm sure NBC will figure out some way to keep the goose laying the golden eggs. Given Manson was caught in 1969, maybe they'd move Hodiak (the lead character) up to the 1970s to work on other notorious cases of the day.
Posted by: qdpsteve at June 01, 2015 01:56 AM (elbY7)

============
I read that, too. But I also read on IMDB that the author had it planned out for 6 seasons. Seems unlikely with television being so fickle. Maybe they meant books? It is suppose to be based on a book series.

The show does leave you hanging. It also could be punched up quite a bit. Duchovney is great but too much gay sex for my tastes.

380 otho, thanks. :-)

I've seen bits and pieces of Election. And I can relate to Broderick's character making his whole world/career fall apart (as I've read about the movie) trying to "stop the madness," kinda-sorta.

381 "And by all means develop some good drones and put them on the mini-carriers as well. For really difficult missions, send them on one-way suicide flights"

Tomahawk missiles called while you were out. They said they'd call back.

Posted by: torquewrench at June 01, 2015 02:02 AM (noWW6)

382 Bruce, six seasons?!? They'd really have to drag things along. Like I said earlier, I think LAPD first looked into Manson's cult around 1966 and he was caught by 1969. So IMHO, only so much you can portray in a three-year timeframe.

[McGehee]

There's a lady who's shown all about her is known
And she's buying a stairlift to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, on the Sunday news shows
With a word she can get who she came for.

Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairlift to heaven.

There's a sign on the desk but she wants to be sure 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In the garden out back, lies a songbird who sang,
Interrupting her Majesty's preening.

Ooh, don't it make you wonder?
Ooh, it should make you wonder.

On North Africa's shore monsters kicked in the door,
We were all misled as to the reason.
And a new day won't dawn for those who are gone,
And questions will still find no answers.

Ooh, what difference does it make?
Ooh, what difference at this point?

There's a feeling I get when I watch ABC,
And my spirit is crying for real news.
In my thoughts I have seen dancing dwarfs through the trees,
And her voice is heard when they are speaking.

Yes Bill did tussle with an intern, back during his term,
Turns out she did stand by her man.
Yes, it may look inevitable, she'll be the nominee
In the real world there's no guarantee.

But don't you wonder?

Your head is shaking and you don't know, which way to go,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, what happened to those emails, and did you know
Your stairlift rides on the lying wind?

And as we wind on up the trail
Our feet avoiding the rail.
There rides a lady we all know
Who talks a lot and wants to show
She has a plan for all your gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
Now one is all, and all is mine,
Don't fall in love, just fall in line.

And she's buying a stairlift to heaven.

384 Except the Tomahawk is no longer in production. And the replacement is a few years off.

But as Jean alluded to, the TFX analogy sticks because of high level 'interest' that is really interference. And because of that interest, even if the plane is a dog no one wants it to fail.

The USAF LWF gave us the F-16 and the F-18. Both planes grew to meet foreign requirements and generate sales. Though MDD knifed Northrop in the back over F-18 sales. MDD was supposed to sell to navies while Northrop sold their version to air forces, but MDD took all the contracts. Thus Northrup was reduced to being a sub-contractor on a plane it originally designed.

Nah, weren't sold anywhere. These came straight from my sister. She "sells" a few dozen a week at church to subsidize feed costs, but I think she gives away 10x that much.
I think when she sells them, it's like $1 per dozen...

389 I'm disqualifying people who think this disqualifies Rand from being as influential to me. Rand was responding to a criticism from Republicans, probably not well, but Republicans criticized him (plus some back and forth before, I think).

And now a bunch of Republicans are saying a potential Republican presidential nominee is disqualified from being president. That can be used in the campaign by Democrats, too. So point number three I don't think is valid, or if it is, than Jindal is disqualified from office now, too.

It seems like a lot of people don't like his dad, and have had a thing against him and people who would choose do identify with libertarianism instead of conservatism, so anything they can point to disqualify him they'll do. Just my take.

And Rick Perry thinks the the role of government is to choose and fund private businesses. This is his track record, and he defends it. How is this not a disqualification? At least Paul isn't getting the functions of government wrong.

After 9/11, Ledeen advocated non-military aid to Iranian dissidents rather than an invasion of Iraq. As it turned out, Saddam Hussein reportedly maintained the impression that he had significant hidden WMD stockpiles because he feared Iran.

407 I would argue that for the most part that Bush was following the strategy that Steven Denbeste laid out here in 2003 (denbeste.nu/essays/strategic_overview.shtml) for the reasons that Denbeste explained here around the same time (www.denbeste.nu/cd_log_entries/2003/11/Threeconjectures.shtml).

The Three Conjectures essay goes a long way in explaining why the 'Islam is a religion of peace' public gambit was/is considered worth following.

The only time I go to the doc is for stitches or broken bones bigger than fingers/toes...

In fact, last time I went to an ER (a few years ago), my knuckle got ripped off on a job. I cleaned it, put it back in place, then taped it up & went back to work.
The ex and her Mom finally convinced me to go to ER for stitches.

I never saw an actual Doc, just a PA. What probably needed eight or ten sutures got three. And a bill for something like $2600. One of those stitches bust lose the next day, too.

429 chi, a lot of that bill was probably for the hospital itself--usually the professional services (PA, NP, or doc) is a separate bill. For the PA and the stitches themselves, the bill was probably on the order of $500, and the rest was the hospital for the privilege of coming to their ER, being seen by the nurse, getting the numbing medication and tetanus booster if needed...

Posted by: Conservative Crank at June 01, 2015 04:20 AM (b2cFu)

Posted by: Conservative Crank at June 01, 2015 04:21 AM (b2cFu)

431 Thanks for all the work you do, Crank.

I had to get stitches as a teen due to a "domestic disturbance". Typical Eris family dinnertime argument ensues. Dad says "If you give me any more lip, I'll...!!". Being me, I give him lip, and the next thing I know a plate of spaghetti is flung at me, hard, shatters on my elbow, and I'm off to the ER for embroidery work.

Posted by: All Hail Eris at June 01, 2015 04:32 AM (jR7Wy)

432 Yeah, the ex's Mom offered to sew it up. She had a suture kit. Hell, she raised five kids to adulthood (thrr boys), but when it came down to business, she couldn't do it.

I could actually see the ligaments in my knuckle move, and that might have freaked her out some. I want to get me a kit, because when it comes down to it, I could stitch myself.

Posted by: chi's sandwIch (previously shredded chi) at June 01, 2015 04:34 AM (BISbA)

433 Actually, I erred earlier--if you'd seen the doc, that portion of the bill would have been around $500--for a PA to do it, it was probably more like $250, but everything costs more in the ED. I can believe $60-100 for an urgent care or outpatient office visit stitches.

Posted by: GnuBreed at June 01, 2015 04:54 AM (CUfQt)

Which is the kind of sh*t the AMA and Obama should have encouraged if they want universal coverage. Frankly, I would love it if we would revert to health insurance as initially conceived--catastrophic coverage with routine care paid out of pocket. Once you have direct payment by consumers and cut out all the insurance entities and people who work in offices/hospitals doing nothing but gaming the system for reimbursement from insurance, more competition kicks in and cost of care goes down while quality likely improves.

Now, if you want concierge medicine, where you pay a fee to belong to a clinic or practice in exchange for special rates or availability, I'm all for it. Hell, I helped write a position paper for it for the AMA student ethics committee in support of it.

Posted by: Conservative Crank at June 01, 2015 05:01 AM (b2cFu)

436 And while I'm fantasizing about real reform in medicine, I'd like to repeal EMTALA which states I have to treat any damn fool who walks in the ER for any damn reason regardless of ability to pay (technically they are entitled to a medical screening exam to exclude life-threatening problems, but in practice it really means what I said above). If you could charge idiot parents $50 cash up front per kid for bringing in their brat pack with runny noses at 3 in the morning, you'd see a lot less of the meaningless bullsh*t clogging up the ER.

Posted by: Conservative Crank at June 01, 2015 05:04 AM (b2cFu)

437 435, 436 Posted by : CC

Amen. EMTALA is essentially slavery imho. You're forced to work for free, basically. And that is bullshit. And your position on some minimum charge is absolutely true. Here's a real life example, from a totally different realm:

A local casino had a free poker tourney once a week. You had to arrive two hours early to assure a spot. Some spots were taken by actual street bums; lots of retirees too. After a few months, the casino decided to impose a $5 fee to play in it. Suddenly, now you could walk in 10 minutes before the start and get a spot.

That $5 fee totally changed the nature of the tourney. The players were more serious. The kamikazees were gone. The room smelled better, too.

439 I wish I knew the source for this, but on the topic of medical costs.

The inflation adjusted cost for delivery of child in the hospital, including all doctor fees and a 3-4 day stay (standard in the 1960s), would have still been under $1000 in 2010.

Actual current cost--low 5 figures, or just under a year's pay of full-time minimum wage. And that's for a 48 hour stay and assuming no complications.

446 444 Crank ... I do not see, given my basic lack of faith in human nature, how are can possibly roll back Federal Government WITHOUT rolling back the size of our military ... and thus our influence in Global Affairs.

Any government, composed of mere mortals, that wields the power to influence Foreign Affairs WILL seek to use power in the Domestic Sphere.

I give you Eisenhower and Reagan.

More importantly, I give you the 2nd, 3rd, 9th and 10th Amendments, which if properly interpreted bar the federal government from using its military power domestically, bar it from usurping state prerogatives which are necessarily more limited, and give the citizens the means to deal decisively with tyrannical overreach.

447 Uh, that was a SuperPAC that released that ad, by definition not associated with the campaign.

So, are you a liar, a Bush supporter, or simply grossly misinformed...?

That's a charmingly naive view of SuperPACs.

I also fail to see how defending Cruz or attacking Paul is a move that supports Bush. The Venn diagram of people that support Paul and support Bush is one with precious little overlap.

448 That should have been "Venn diagram of people that support Cruz and support Bush"

449 Let's see. Iraq Syria and Libya were some of the most virulently anti Israel nation states in the neighborhood. Now they are unincorporated tribals zones engulfed in sectarian violence. Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas are obligated to protect Shia being subject to Sunni mauraders. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Personally I agree with the strategy, btw.

450 Iraq Syria and Libya were secular modern (relatively) nation states. Now they are tribal zones adhering 6th tactics and awash in religious fervor. Their moon is in retrograde. That didn't happen in a vacuum.

451 This Maetenloch fellow might need more medication, sounds like he\she didn't even watch the setup prior to those Paul remarks. btw does Lindsey Gramnesty some how get a pass for saying the reverse (first) - you know what Paul was asked to respond too?

452 matenloch should vote for his intellectual twin Rick Perry then.
