Watched the latest "Star Trek" flick, "Into Darkness", last night. What a foetid mass of crap that was. J. J. Abrams sucks green donkey balls. Later on, the missus and I stepped outside around 10:45 in order to see the ISS passing overhead. Real clear night and pretty cool to see. She has an app that tells when it's visible, how high in the sky it is and the direction it'll travel. It's supposed to be more or less overhead tonight around 10 PM EDT. For those who bother to look, Venus and Jupiter are prominently visible in the evening sky right now. Time to go weed the garden... I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-ninth. http://tinyurl.com/oafjwtt That "whrrrrrrrr" sound you hear is the Founding Fathers spinning in their graves.... so best to try them by "family" ie, Debian, Red Hat etc and count derivatives as similar. my opinion: Linux Mint, then OpenSuse then Ubuntu. The different distributions, under the hood, come down to how they handle software packages, updates etc, then how they play with commercial sources. if you're not familiar, avoid Slackware. it doesn't follow the same conventions as the Linux Consortium puts out. conversely, if you're ever in trouble find a Slackware user - they know Linux better than anyone. There are no "new" Hillarys. There are, on occasion, new strategies to dupe people into thinking there is a new Hillary. But these Potemkin do-overs are usually as pale, thin, and see-through as the skin of an agoraphobic Goth computer programmer. The simple fact is: This is her. There is no other her. There is no other Bill, either, by the way. They are Clintons and they are eternal, Aesopian, unchanging. The tackiness and the lying, the parsing and corner-cutting, the entitlement and fakery: This is what they do. Scandals swirl around the Clintons like the cloud of dirt surrounding Pigpen not because the Clintons are the victims of their enemies, but because the Clintons are their own worst enemies. They do this to themselves. They create these problems. They are the authors of their own torment because this is who they are.

WASHINGTON -- Over the last few months, Harold M. Ickes, a longtime ally of Hillary Rodham Clinton, has helped organize private meetings around the country with union leaders, Clinton backers and Democratic strategists. The pressing topic: Who will step up to be the Democrats' megadonors in the 2016 presidential race?
Republican contenders have already secured hundreds of millions of dollars in commitments from a stable of billionaires, including a Wall Street hedge fund executive, a Las Vegas casino magnate, a Florida auto dealer, a Wyoming investor and, of course, the Kansas-born billionaires David H. and Charles G. Koch. But none of the biggest Democratic donors from past elections -- for example, the Chicago investor Fred Eychaner, the climate-change activist Tom Steyer and the entertainment mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg -- have committed to supporting Mrs. Clinton on nearly the same scale. "No one has stepped forward as the savior," said Matt Bennett, a longtime Democratic consultant in Washington. Posted by: John D Rockefeller at May 31, 2015 07:21 AM (e8kgV) 38

Meanwhile, over in the UK: Thousands of online sellers who use websites such as eBay, Etsy and Amazo are the focus of fresh attempts by HM Revenue Customs to crack down on tax evasion. Such websites are being forced to hand over customer account details, including their selling activity, as part of the Revenues legal powers that were extended last year. This type of information gathering has enabled the taxman to target 14,000 individuals it suspects of failing to declare profits on their self-assessment tax returns, the Revenue confirmed. So-called accelerated payment notices (APNs) will be issued to those who fail to comply. With these notices the taxman has a statutory power, among those afforded to HMRC in the 2014 Finance Act, to force people to pay tax upfront, even if the amount is subject to dispute or appeal. http://tinyurl.com/nbgdqpc Thanks Conservatives (tm). Posted by: Nevergiveup at May 31, 2015 07:09 AM The military -- and I'm sure you know better than most, NGU -- is a "passive" operation as far as Choom Boy and Congress are concerned. They will do what their CiC tells them to do, and the complaining about conditions, equipment, "leadership," etc. will be muted or nonexistent. They are taught to respect and obey Command. So when the Mocha Messiah wants to pimp one of his constituencies (the LGBTQEXKRVZ crowd) at the expense of the people who actually PROTECT his worthless ass, they'll grin and bear it. It has gotten to the point where I, as a civilian, wish the military to stand up to the worthless fuckweasel and his fanbois and say "enough!" The government attitude toward the military is just one of about 7,593 reasons why they ALL need to go, to be replaced with people whose sense of perspective hasn't been destroyed by that cesspool that is D.C. President Obama has released a Presidential Proclamation for June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month:
_____________________ I'm in favor of treating homosexual and transgender people with compassion, but celebrating their condition seems a bridge too far. Why are we celebrating the fact that some people (homosexuals) are sexually abnormal (the norm being heterosexuality), and some people (transgenders) are mentally abnormal? Bruce Jenner is obviously (biologically, chromosomally) a male. The fact that he "feels" like he should have been born a female is no doubt miserable for him, but hardly deserving of celebration by the rest of us. Showing tolerance and compassion for people who have these issues is a good thing. But presidential proclamations that we should be celebrating such people, and that they should take pride in their condition, is just ludicrous. Saw that in August, 2013, Beau Biden had treatment for a then unidentified illness at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, considered to be the finest cancer treatment facility in the world.
At the time, Biden was the Attorney-General of Delaware. It's a sure bet that the Delaware state employee health insurance plan does not allow every Delaware state employee free lance their health care around the country that way. Secretary of State John Kerry suffered a broken leg in a bike accident in France early Sunday, a U.S. embassy official told NBC News.
The cycling accident occurred near Scionzier, France, about 25 miles from Geneva, where Kerry had been holding nuclear talks with Iran's foreign minister, Javad Zarif. Kerry was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Geneva, where he is in a stable condition, State Department spokesman John Kirby said. "Secretary Kerry is stable ... He did not lose consciousness," Kirby said. ... how could they tell ? Posted by: OJ Simpson at May 31, 2015 08:23 AM (e8kgV) 95

I see that Obama is pushing for more gun regulations.
Seems a great deal of the push is towards preventing people with mental illness problems from owning guns. In my version of reality, any Vet who raises concern for suffering PTSD, no matter how slight, or subsequently diagnosed as not having the issue will be barred from gun ownership. Any individual self identifying as being of one gender, yet trapped in the wrong gender body will be found to be perfectly normal, and therefore fully qualified to own a firearm. Just out of curiosity, what is the overall suicide rate for post-op transexuals? Is it roughly the same as the overall population? After five years of public hearings and heated debates, a proposed set of safety standards for all California porn production sets is edging closer to being finalized, but adult film performers say if passed, the new regulations would make sex scenes look like medical dramas.
The 21-page draft, proposed by the state's Division of Occupational Safety and Health, blends thick regulatory definitions with graphic language as it outlines how adult film performers and others on set can protect themselves from bloodborne pathogens and other bodily fluids. It underscores the use of condoms as a way to protect against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. It also calls for producers to pay for medical visits and hepatitis B vaccines. During a hearing and public comment period that ended Thursday in San Diego, adult film performers and their supporters said the regulations -- which include wearing protective eye gear -- go too far. OS-Hat
FWIW, I'm running Linux Mint 17.1 and it works very well. Probably my problem, but I had lots of trouble getting it to recognize the network, whereas Win 7 came up with a full network map without problem or actions required on my part. If you are going to multi-boot, I think the best approach is to load Windows first, the Linux install will establish the multi-boot feature for you. Since drives are so cheap, I installed Windows on a dedicated C drive, then added a drive for Linux so rather than a multi-OS single disk system, I had a multi-OS multi-disk system that could be easily be physically separated when I needed to destroy emails on my "personal" server, not that I would ever do any such thing because of my principles. You might also look into running Linux on a virtual machine (as opposed to the live disk approach) to test drive it, but you need a pretty good/modern system to have responsive performance. I've never liked the live disk if I wanted to wring out the system because it is a bit clunky, and I feel that virtual machines, while not perfect, run more like the real thing (especially at boot time). If a civilization is sophisticated enough to build a Dyson sphere around one star, though, why should it stop there? Why not outfit a whole galaxy with Dyson spheres? As Jason Wright, assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State, wrote:
Consider a space-faring civilization that can colonize nearby stars in ships that travel at "only" 0.1% the speed of light (our fastest spacecraft travel at about 1/10 this speed). Even if they stop for 1,000 years at each star before launching ships to colonize the next nearest stars, they will still spread to the entire galaxy in 100 million years, which is 1/100 of the age of the Milky Way. That is, an advanced civilization can fan out across its home galaxy pretty quickly, cosmically speaking, and a galaxy overrun with Dyson spheres and other energy-collecting super-structures would have a global surplus of mid-infrared radiation. With that in mind, Wright and his colleagues have been searching for evidence of such supercivilizations by looking for galaxies whose spectra skew to the infrared. Their campaign, called Glimpsing Heat from Alien Technologies Survey (G-HAT), scoured some 100 million objects observed by NASA's Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite. In a paper published in April, lead author Roger Griffith reported that, from all those millions, they found 50 galaxies showing infrared excesses that could maybe, possibly be due to alien technology -- but, far more likely, are due to natural astrophysical processes. (Incidentally, as Lee Billings reported in Scientific American, the G-HAT team wasn't able to secure funding from the usual government sources; their work is supported by a grant from the private Templeton Foundation.) As a veteran of breaking limbs three times (arm twice, leg once)- You don't faint. Hell, the area even goes kinda numb for a significant amount of time. I was surprised about that when I broke my leg a couple of years ago. Also dislocated my arm at the same time (I wasn't f-ing around). My lower leg was shaped like the letter S, but it was very numb and really didn't hurt, even when they tried to lift it and I could feel the bones grinding. But the arm, wow, the pain there was really something, that was about a 9.5 on the old 1-10 scale. Apparently I had a nerve caught between the bones. It was almost enough to make me pass out. But the leg, nah. Posted by: Agent -J at May 31, 2015 09:40 AM (LfFy0) 158

The most painful part of my broken arm when I was 11 was the ambulance ride to the hospital from the Boy Scout Camp us Cubbies, and parents, were having a family camping weekend. Those rutty roads did not make my arm feel the least bit good. Then country roads/US route for about 30 miles. Not fun, even with my arm wrapped in a pillow. My first, and unfortunately not my last, ambulance ride.
