Overnight Open Thread (30 May 2015)

Behold the genius of House Democrat Rep. Carolyn Maloney (N.Y.). House bill would require gun owners to have liability insurance.

"We require insurance to own a car, but no such requirement exists for guns," Maloney said in a statement. "The results are clear: car fatalities have declined by 25 percent in the last decade, but gun fatalities continue to rise."

Liability insurance had nothing to do with a decrease in car fatalities and her statement that by having to carry liability insurance, it motivates drivers to be better is BS. Fear of dying in a car crash or shooting your own foot is what motivates safe behavior.

Criminals won't give a rats ass about insurance just like how uninsured drivers don't. Does she really think an insurance requirement would've stopped ANY of the shootings that have made the news?? I'm sure the Aurora, CO movie theater shooter is cursing in his cell right now wishing he had liability insurance.

Rising Crime Rates

It's not just Baltimore that is seeing a rise in crime. This is what happens when folks in positions of power appease the mob.

And it's not just Baltimore. Cops all over the country have seen the six Baltimore police officers served up to appease the mob, and they know it could happen to them. The results are as predictable as they are tragic. In New York City murders are up 12 percent from a year ago as officers continue their reticence at conducting the type of proactive police work that keeps violent crime in check. In Los Angeles, homicides are down by 10 percent this year, though this is more of a testament to the skill of paramedics and medical personnel than it is to good police work. Shootings in the city are up by 23 percent and other violent crime is up by 25 percent.

Sniper Threat

Hmmm. Do we have a new D.C. type sniper on the loose in northern Colorado? Fatal shooting of cyclist linked to shooting of woman driving on I-25.

Leaders in Education

Yup, it is hard to fire a teacher. Teacher who 'lost' two 4-year olds can't be fired. And then there is that diversity officer who said "kill all white men". She gets to keep her job.

In other news, a teacher has been suspended for supposedly sharing with her student before and after pics of her boobjob.

News Bloopers

The "let's hope for a dry hump day" had me rollin'.

Culinary Aggression

My kids sure as hell ain't giving up s'mores. Feds wage war of culinary aggression.

But you are wrong. Fear of liability is a great motivator. Maybe not where you are, but in a litigious county like Miami-Dade you better believe that fear of liability is real. Very.

Yet the government sees them as a problem to be fixed because we can have people enjoying themselves!

25 Gun liability insurance would be a hell of a scam. They just put in a standard rider that they will not cover any damages in the event of any misdemeanor or felony crime associated with possession or use of the gun, or to someone injured by a gun while engaged in a misdemeanor or felony. Very few people would be eligible to collect anything.

27 The correlation is that the kind of people who would wear a mankini are low-class trash who also are likely to do things like get outrageously drunk, get into fights, and commit petty crime.

Why the hell do women who get their tits done insist of foisting them on everyone else? Oh goody, you paid a hack surgeon too much money to shove too much silicone into your chest. Yay. Now get those beach balls out of my face.

Liability insurance doesn't make you fear getting into a wreck more. If anything, it should make you less careful, since without it you'd be on the hook for all the costs.

I think the scam is the total reason for the requirement, it's money for the insurance cronies, money for the lawyers that will write the disclaimers and represent the insurance companies shielding them from a payout, and best of all a PITA for legal gun owners.

Then there's the Little Ice Age, which almost wiped out the young Jamestown settlement. That was the first decade of the 17th century, and shortly after the LIA the Industrial Revolution began. So, while I think global industrialization has raised global temperature somewhat, the fact that it coincided with the waning of the LIA is why man's impact on temperature is often exaggerated.

My sister is an aide in a lower elementary school, kindergarten through 2nd grade. A kindergarten teacher, along with a parent volunteer, took her 17 students for a walk of a couple of blocks to a public library. My sister was in the hallway of the school when 4 of this teacher's students walked up to her and said they couldn't find their teacher. Yup. This genius, who spent 4 years at a university, didn't notice that 4 out of 17 students, that's almost a fourth of the class, was missing. Nothing bad happened because the kids were noticed right away, but for pete's sake, she didn't notice that she had 13 kids instead of 17?

109 nerdygirl, my sister is a first-grade teacher. Every year at the beginning of spring, she takes her class (usually about 30-35 students, so much for smaller class sizes) to the Long Beach El Dorado Park Nature Center.

Well, she does her best but sometimes all she can do is be reactive. At the beginning of the trail is a huge (but thankfully mostly shallow) lake. Anyway, she was leading the kids inside when this year, she heard a splash. Turns out a bully actually tossed another kid into the lake. Good grief.

The model of the Fathers is you either enter politics after amassing a full private life, or you enter briefly out of a sense of duty and then retire to your own private life (e.g., George Washington). Congress should raise by at least 10 the minimum ages listed for offices in the Constitution.

So while I feel bad for the Bidens, their sufferings need not be in vain if others see part of them as a cautionary tale.

150 @109 -- turns out I have a personal connection to that lake. When I was a kid (before LASIK), I typically wore coke-bottle-thick glasses. One time, when my family were visiting that lake, I saw something that looked mostly white with some colorful touches -- like a bread-wrapper for Wonder Bread, but I wasn't sure. So I asked my mom, "what's that?"

Then she screamed, and my dad ran over and jumped into the lake [which is, indeed, quite shallow], waded out to the little girl whose dress I'd seen, and hauled her to shore. When we got there, she was not breathing -- and, as everyone fumbled around to try to drain her lungs and remember long-ago rescue-breathing lessons, she convulsed, de-glorped, and started breathing again.

By this time, her family -- which was 30-40 feet away, had shown up. I don't think they even took her to the hospital.

152 Gun Insurance, my thoughts.

1. Check your homeowners / renters insurance. A lot of them are capped at 2K-5K for losses. Just like 1K for electronics. For more coverage, they will charge more.

2. What happens if you use your carry weapon? have you given it any thought? Say the wrong thing or do the worng thing and you may be in jail for 10-20. Andrew Branca, who sometimes comments here and at Legal Insurrection has a book and classes. Massad Ayoob also has a book and classes. Massad has been "the" expert witness for self defense trials for the last 20 years.

He has great advice for what to say, do, and then STFU!!! if you ever have an incident.

3. there is also CCW insurance. Look around, compare. do you want a guy that does deeds and wills as your defense lawyer?

So the entire basis on which this egregious infringement on gun rights is predicated is almost certainly false.

The whole idea is beyond stupid. First off, most gun crime is committed, get this, by criminals. Obeying that law or any other is not in their skill set. I'm willing to bet most gun crimes are committed by people who could not legally qualify to own or carry a gun, right?

Second point is the one you make, CC. "Gun liability" insurance would be a huge profit center for insurance companies, because any actual crime committed by an insured person would invalidate the policy, and the insurer would never have to pay out. They would only ever have to pay out on bona-fide accidental shootings, which are quite rare.

And the final point: for the reasons described above, law-abiding gun owners could probably get "gun liability insurance" so cheaply that it really wouldn't be much of a deterrence to law-abiding persons wishing to acquire a gun, any more than auto liability insurance (which can be quite costly) deters most of us from owning automobiles.

So it's at least a double fail. It would offer no help to victims of crime, its ostensible purpose, and it would not deter those "nasty right wingers" (i.e. us) from buying guns. It might enrich some insurance companies, but I suspect the biggest winner would be the NRA, which would undoubtedly gear up to provide cheap co-op insurance to members.

Mike, you're caught in the semantics of "owning" vs "driving" a car. In Ohio, if you own a car, you are responsible for anyone who drives that car, ANYONE. If someone is driving YOUR car, you are responsible for any damages incurred. And if the CAR is not insured, and if any drives it, YOU are responsible for anything that happens with your car. If someone is drunk, drives your car, and injures or kills someone, YOU are just as responsible for any criminal charges, as well as being liable.

I learned how to change a diaper babysitting for a couple down the block when I was 12. I thought babysitting was a great gig - I got a buck an hour and chips and soda and the kids usually went to bed pretty early. I also learned how to be responsible for a smaller human being.

352 @109 -- turns out I have a personal connection to that lake.

Ho lee cow. On that note I might have to go to bed.

Victorian "prudishness" has never been a mystery to me. No reliable means of birth control + a ruined life and reputation if you got preggers outside of wedlock + a good chance of dying during childbirth - jeez, really is it a wonder they kept their legs together?

Not just infants; it was rough until you got past puberty (and rough after). Occasionally you'll get a stone with 5-6 names, all died in different years and ages. Names carved on multiple sides of the marker because they originally bought it for one or two children, then kept burying siblings...

501 The national sport of Colombia is Tejo, which is similar to beanbag, but you throw rocks at an inclined box of mud at a target that is the end of a steel pipe that just comes out of the dirt. Some times they use impact-squibs so you can tell by the pop that you hit the target.

It is uniquely Colombian sport that involves getting hammered on cheap beer, throwing rocks, and at times explosives are involved.

560 In case anyone is wondering, I feel safer today than I did yesterday, and I'll be safer tomorrow than I am today. I have five routers, and can turn them off or on or connect any source to any output.

As it turns out, the internet is most vulnerable near its ends. If you have a tainted computer hooked to router A, all of the other computers hooked to router A are at risk. If you have router B hooked to router A, the computers at router B are under substantially less risk.

So if you get infected, your brothers and sisters are doomed, but your aunts and nephews may escape.

The relationships are "hard-coded" by the physical configuration of the routers. You plug router A into any of router B's output ports, then any computers in router A's outputs just became nephews to anyone on router B. You move the cable from routerB's outputs to router C, now A's outputs are nephew to anyone on C.

607 @544 Deep background for those too young to have lived through it... the CAS mission was a red-haired stepchild for the USAF, as indeed was nearly the entire draftee/cannon-fodder oriented pentagon, until the Mad Major, John Boyd, and his acolytes came along.
Pierre Sprey wanted the ground attack aircraft to be able to come home on a wing and a prayer. The A-10 may be the only airframe in harm's way that can do that today. The pilot is protected by a titanium tub, and anyone with any knowledge of fluid dynamics can see the survivability of this bird.
They saw the future that did not require Lincoln-esque draftees.
(Btw, on what metrics was the Civil War worth it? None? Less than none? We're still effing paying for it?)
If your ass's pos is receiving 7.62x39 incoming, and your ROE prevents you from doing what you must (Commie-Fag-Junkies in), do you want a bird capable, even dominant, in the CAS role?
Fuck, yeah.
Fuck n e 1 who say, "No".

Yeah, I've bought some at surplus stores. No worse than canned stew or Chef Boyardee. I was just riffing on the meme.

I remember, back when I was maybe 10 or so, getting some WWII tinned hardtack biscuits. Man! Those things were about 5 inches in diameter, and half inch thick, and you could have stuffed a vest with them and used it as body armor. A hammer wouldn't bust them. If I remember right, they came packed in a compartment on a 12-man round inflatable life raft my father got, and used as a swimming pool for us kids.

Why would I pay good money to go see some nobody pretend to be a singer that I'm pretty indifferent to? Of course, Elvis impersonators are a phenomenon in their own right.

This whole exploit started with Terms of Service violations -- which made the squeals of "felonies, felonies, felonies" hilarious when the guy was ID'd. In response, dropped Malware (which IS more serious). Latest, suborned a router (not sure if it's him or his Master at this point). Unfortunately, it's not MY router....and I can get a new one daily for as long as I'm willing to drive three miles. Plus, it's an exploit that has been downloaded to one of the open systems.

I don't really feel the need. Two of the principles of the story are here now. One knows what happened and one one thinks he knows what happened.

I'll just do the short of it.

Number 1 asks a question.
Number 2 takes it the wrong way.
Number 1 apologizes 2 or 3 times.
Number 2 keeps hounding.
Number 3 jumps on the band wagon.

End of story.

Then I reclassed to Ordnance, because, I like shit that goes 'bang' and 'boom'.

795 I knew this 15 years ago, but I've been futzing around avoiding the work. Windows deserves to be dead, dead, dead -- everyone should be running LINUX boxes (BTW, iOS is another flavor of Unix -- and even 'droid has Unix at its core).

People should understand that there are versions and distros of LINUX -- only underlying kernels have versions -- Ubuntu is on 15.04 "Vivid Vervet"; Debian is 8.0 "Jessie" -- but a distro is a version with a pre-packaged variety of related compatible programs.

Thus it is that Linux Mint 17.1 "Rebecca" is based off of Ubuntu 14.04.

GREAT QUESTION!!!! 'cause it hits right to the core of the issue. Ubuntu compiles the core and is a real change to the essential underpinnings......Mint is like presenting Windows 7 with Libre Office -- they disclaim the underpinnings and give you a suite of associated applications and a user interface on top of Ubuntu.

We really do need to make the point more often that these rights are natural rights. Trying the God argument may not work on the modern left, but these rights are an indivisible part of our nature, and governments that trample those rights with wild abandon never endure long.

921 "We require insurance to own a car, but no such requirement exists for guns"

That's because you're operating a piece of equipment weighing 1-2 tons, often at high rates of speed, in a public place, in close proximity to others. The difference between that and a gun, Dimwit Maloney? It's ILLEGAL to 'operate' a firearm in a public place, in close proximity to others.

Oh, and the reason the minimum liability requirement even exists? To keep all the minor bumps and scrapes that make up the vast majority of auto accidents from flooding the court system. What an idiot.
