Back on Wednesday, Andy reminded us that, unlike certain "Scientists" (and news people), we should not be terribly surprised by floods like the recent Texas/Oklahoma floods. As he noted, there is even a song to remind us that floods happen.

Last weekend, I was involved in a discussion concerning local disaster preparedness. We set up a rudimentary plan for a mock disaster-response drill, aimed primarily at assessing if people were in trouble. One topic that came up was finding a safe meeting place for the people assigned to locate those who might have been affected by the disaster.

Sometimes after a disaster, a recognizable local meeting place is hard to find. Whilst preparing for the Saturday Gardening Thread, I ran across the video below. It describes Amish building techniques intended to increase the likelihood that a beach house in Texas would survive a hurricane. An intact building could help a lot of people following such a weather-related disaster.

The Amish workmen did not use a calculator or computer, but did use some modern tools. In this case, old-fashioned Amish joinery was expected to stand up better than modern joinery:

When I was a girl, our family took a trip to Yellowstone. In West Yellowstone, we stayed at a motel where guests rented small log cabins. These were among the few buildings in West Yellowstone to survive the big Yellowstone/Hebgen Lake earthquake intact, because the way the logs were joined allowed them to move at the "hinges".

My father told us that one of our neighbors had been killed in the quake while camping at Hebgen Lake. The lakebed shifted, drowning people on one side of the lake and tearing the clothes off people on the other side because the wind was so tremendous. A landslide formed Quake Lake just downstream and buried people in another campground. We visited both lakes and saw the earth slippage near Hebgen Lake.

No home construction technique could have helped the people who ended up in the lake's new bed, but more suitable construction techniques might have helped some people in West Yellowstone.

I can't promise you that your local building inspectors would accept the "old ways", so you might want to check before starting a project. There are more modern ways to increase weather and quake resistance of homes, too. These include things like extra reinforcement of walls, especially at corners, and hurricane straps. You might want to keep preparation for a disaster in mind when building or buying a home.

Last weekend, we also discussed some reasonable steps people could take to help them survive a disaster until communications were restored and help arrived. The first one was storing some clean water. Start now.

I won't go into too much detail here about living through the loss of electricity, gas, water utilities and electronic communication. However, I thought that the video below, about a couple living "off the grid" in the West Texas desert, was a good reminder that it could be done. I liked it.

Apparently, there is more rain headed Texas' (and Oklahoma's) way.

Central Texas' flood resulted in 9 dead and 10 missing (as of last night).

The number of dead rises considerably when you include a broader area. The Weather Channel reports: At Least 28 Killed in Texas and Oklahoma; President Obama Signs Disaster Declaration.

I haven't seen firm estimates of how much damage was caused in terms of dollars, but here's an eye-opener: April Storms Cause Estimated $65M Damage Across Texas.

How have our morons and moronettes in the path of these storms fared?

Hugo was not pretty. No power for two weeks. My mom lived in Murrells Inlet and came to stay with us. She left two days after the storm, she had power at the beach. CLT nope.

The electron microscopes I relied on became extremely expensive paper weights, covered in raw sewage and human cadaver waste. (The EM lab was down in the subbasement with the cadaver lab.)

Yuck!

I really dodged a bullet. You can't re-install that sort of equipment overnight.

If it's like mine check the muffler/exhaust pipe. Ours broke and melted the fuel line above it. The ensuing fire was exciting but not all that much fun. The generator after some minor repair still works though.

We lived in a ground floor apt in Houston, but we were fortunate that it was a new'ish place. I think they planned the drainage well. Even when nearby areas had standing water, we never got water in the apt.

39 Speaking of foul weather, NX4HWN, the amateur (ham) radio station at the National Hurricane Center, conducted its annual test today.

While we all know that Anthropogenic Global Cooling/ Warming/ Climate Change/ Booosh!/ Teh Jooos! has resulted in fewer hurricanes than in the past, weather still happens.

So since hurricane season is upon us, I thought I'd toss out a link to the Hurricane Watch Net, which activates when there is a hurricane threatening or impacting the US. You can get to them at hwn.org.

When they activate you can usually listen to them on their live stream, but sometimes that doesn't work out. I recommend everyone have a Single Side Band (SSB) capable shortwave receiver (like this one: http://tinyurl.com/ph24rwj ) around the house as an emergency prep anyway, and you can use it to listen to not only the Hurricane Watch Net, but ham operators in general, during any type of emergency.

I used to work in the RV business, in the service side of the house. We always recommended running your generator once a month under load for an hour at a minimum.

That reminds me of a house that was built over a lake out here that had to be burned down when half it's yard suddenly fell into the lake. What was left of the house just slid in as well when the final chunk of land broke off during the last round of storms.

Poor family had only lived there a few years and it was their dream house. The city assures the neighbors that their homes are safe...

56 I've been pondering for a while how being in a large country effects the national psyche. Always, in the back of my mind, I know I can retreat into the hinterlands. My homeland doesn't have flooding or forest fires or mudslides, and tornadoes and earthquakes are rare. Sure, there are monster snowstorms, but in the spring when they find your lifeless corpse clutching the last bottle of Valu-Rite, at least you won't be stinking up the joint.

Perhaps long skinny countries like Chile think in terms of north-south escapes vice heading into the hills (the Andes).

66 Raining right now in San Antonio - it was beautiful and clear this morning, but rainstorms were predicted. Our neighbors were mowing their lawns and doing yardwork, trying to beat the storm. My daughter and I ran around and did our monthly big shopping at Sam's and the nice HEB up the road.
We were coming back from a meet-up in Austin this time last Saturday, skirting the storm that hit in the afternoon, but for about twenty minutes it was coming down so heavy that we could barely see out the windshield. Another huge storm hit in mid-evening, and it was the cumulative effect of all the rain that fell which roared through all these little Hill Country towns like Wimberley last weekend.
It might not actually rain very much where you are - but if it rains a lot up-stream, then break out the sandbags and small boats.

79 Structural engineer here, so, either that's full disclosure or fair warning.

The amish construction is really only interesting insomuch that it creates a complete load path to resist loads--and in all directions, since under earthquake or if hit by a wall of water or wind, it's not just gravity pulling downward that matters.

There are lots of great details for home construction which achieve this with very normal stick-built construction. Making sure the contractor understands and follows the details is something else again, but this is what the Texas Department of Insurance is set up to do.

Final observation; my friend's family home was all but destroyed in Ocean Springs, Mississippi by Katrina. The other 84 homes on their stretch of road were destroyed. The builder of my friend's family home put in knee braces between the pilings and the first level of the home, whereas none of the others, apparently, did. And while the home had to be rebuilt, about 75% of the structure was still there.

All the others were utterly gone.

Details and a complete load path are vital.

One of the features of life in today's SF is that you will now have to hire a private "expediter" at the cost of several thousand dollars simply to get perfectly code-compliant building plans approved by the city. If you skip this step, your plans will languish indefinitely. Of course, the "expediter" is a guy who knows a guy on the inside, with whom he splits the fee.

Oh, the building plans are *not* code-compliant? Or the work was *not* done to spec by the crew? Not to worry. The expediter will take care of all those minor details as well.

I heard of someone who tried to submit plans to a small jurisdiction in the "valley" here in Texas. The department was one solitary person. The submitter was told that they needed to hire an expediter. The expediter was...the one guy who was the building department.

I always try to remind myself that they were also typically built with the sort of old-growth heart lumber that is unavailable today, at least unavailable at anything less than an utterly astronomical price point as salvage from old structures. The material has a lot to do with the durability.

Yeah, I'm at arms length from CA but it seems they do, or at least did do, a good job at making sure things get built right. The builders that have migrated from CA to TX are amazed at what they see here, and I'm talking within cities like Austin and Houston with approximations of functional building departments.

I have, as you might imagine, an opinion of the current labor force. There are things I used to design in masonry up in MN, with skilled (union) masons, that I would never do down here. I'm not a union fan, and I think it has a lot more to do with culture than unions per se, but those guys were great.

When the si se puede marchers were out with signs saying that they'd built America, I wanted to go have a little chat with them about whether that was a good thing or not. We're going to see it in 20 years when stuff falls apart, but no one will connect the dots then either.

Do you mean residential or commercial?

The short answer is that very few places in the US have the sort of seismic demand that structures in CA have, so CA sees a lot more robust lateral load resisting systems. There are other areas that are as as intense, but CA sure ranks up there. On the engineering side, they have really led the charge in creating the earthquake design criteria and continuing to improve seismic resisting systems. There is no other state with a population that rivals CA that has their seismic issues.

So I look at what someone else I "know" has posted recently, and this person posted a link to an insane essay blaming "the achievement gap" on "the new resegregation," without bothering to note that it is PROGRESSIVES who are pushing the new segregation, and yet then the same progressives blame the world's problems on the policy they just advocated for -- as a way of pinning the "problem" on everyone else except themselves.

So I look at one last potential Facebook "friend" only to discover that the posts are nothing but a continuous 24-hour-a-day stream of people offering her and each other "hugs" and "mantras" because somebody "feels down" that morning; apparently at least 3 people at a minimum in her circle "feel down" on any particular day, and the other 75 people pile on with "hugs" and offers of massages to alleviate that day's depression. All day. Every day.

Conclusion: I will NOT be joining Facebook.

154 We're getting more thunderstorms in Medina County right now.

We had a tragic death as the prom queen in the next town south drowned, trapped in a car.

Lots of flooding, not a dry creek bed in sight. Most folks moved out of the floodable areas after the floods in 2010, so not too much damage I know of.

Down in Hondo, by the 90, they've had a fair bit of damage (signs and sheds and trailers and such) due to straight-line winds exceeding 70 MPH.

Some of the local farmers are having a problem with standing water around the crops.

On our property the big creek that makes up one property line rose but didn't overflow into our pasturage. We had some runoff flooding from our neighbors' fields but it channeled where we expected it to so not an issue. EPA classified us as living in a flood zone without paying the slightest attention to the topography.

We desperately needed this water. The aquifer that feeds the area is back up several feet so far and Medina Lake, which was basically a puddle, has refilled far enough to refloat docks and people are out boating on it again.

See, the problem is you have the wrong type of friends using Facebook - friends that actually post stuff. That's the big mistake right there.

I rarely log into my page, which has virtually no information about me, and have just 3 friends in their 20s. My god-daughter and her sister, who rarely post anything and a young woman from my church in Korea who, when she posts, only posts in Korean, which I'm not learning yet.

One thing I'd like to see in the future, are country specific versions of Facebook, Google, YouTube, Twitter and all of these other sites that skew liberal. Korea has Naver as their search engine not affiliated with Google.

Imagine some entrepreneurs, taking that technology and bringing it to their own countries, in their own languages, just to knock Google, Facebook, etc down.

The YouTube sites could even share content across countries. The search engines would be more local. The big hook for each site would be that your data would not go into an American company's hands. The best sites could then compete in America touting themselves as "Not your grandparent's Facebook."

I think that is how these, seemingly monolithic, liberal leaning companies can be weakened.

I started learning it before getting sidetracked with other projects, but it's a very 'logical' language which after learning the alphabet shouldn't be too horrible. Some of the grammar rules will take some getting used to, but that will come with practice.

Each vowel or consonant makes only one sound.

Yeah, but it seems those ratings are based on not just conversational ability but reading /writing. Because Korean and Japanese still use chinese characters, the reading/writing part dominates the ranking, AFAIK.

Korean is similar to Japanese, and Japanese in terms of conversation isn't difficult. And learning Japanese a lot easier to learn than it would be for a foreign speaker to learn English conversation.

Yeah, slang and casual conversation can get hard to pick up at first, but most Japanese won't start in with a foreign speaker clipping and dipping into local dialect, as in most languages around the world.

There is a general Tokyo/Kanto dialect of Japanese that's not too hard to pick up.

Women generally use the more polite and fully-expressed form speech, so yeah, it's easier to understand them versus men. The grunting, clipped form that men use is considered only ok for casual situations with others who are at equal or lower status. Status determines the level of politness required.

Even english speakers tend to clean up their language when the situation warrents, but it's much more formalized in Japanese and Korean.

Men, as they get older, zero fucks to give, and everything gets the informal levels of speech.

I hear the depleted aquifers are being replenished, too. I don't know how that even works or how long it takes for ground water to percolate down?

Yep, the city of San Antonio gets all of its water from aquifers. The ma in one, the Edwards, has been below average for years but now is creeping back up. We're on lawn watering restrictions until it does--not that anyone needs to water right now.
