By the way, as to his grades, yes, he had excellent grades, but keep in mind that taking law school exams is an art that is somewhat related to the practice of law but in many ways is not. The key is for the professor to make the exam questions complicated, and then for the student to spot as many issues as possible and mention all of them, if possible with a case that supports the principle of law. "The Plaintiff, trespassing on the property, fell into the pool and was injured, in the process destroying the Defendant's 150-year old manuscript worth $1 million." Not good for deciders, very good for people who say one the one hand, on the other hand . . . .

About bringing America back, the definitional issues there, alone, defy useful discussion in this format. I think a good simplistic way to put one major point, however, is that Obama is a symptom, not a cause. He actually showed not a whit of enterprise or talent in his astonishing, accomplishment-free instantaneous rise from nobody to president.
Some advisors' unusual strategy of winning the nomination without actually winning many primaries ("super delegates" for the win) could be seen as clever, but even THAT would have been futile without this amazing, idiotic, cultural/media phenomenon - and crucially, the degraded electorate that actually lapped it up instead of recoiling at it, as most generations of Americans would have done. And all this against the literal living parody of a ridiculously bad and unfit candidate, Hillary, herself running a predictably unskillful campaign. The still-astonishing Joe the Plumber incident actually reflected most of the amazing degradation on so many sides: an oafish unfit candidate walks into a guys' drive-way and a spontaneous question of course leads to a major gaffe, followed by Third World vilification/harrassment of the random citizen. There are many, but that once episode suffices to present an America that is literally unrecognizable to anyone over a certain age.
Symptom - disastrous, pernicious, degrading, still hard to believe - but symptom, not cause. Big hill to climb - an few footholds visible ....

My neighbor up the hill is on solid limestone and about bankrupted a backhoe owner just putting in a little wine cellar.
My sister's 100 year old house on deeper soil has a basement, and so do a lot of her neighbors.
I cant do a basement here because I'm next to the floodplain. Water came close to getting into our lower level once.

Some varieties of clay shrink or swell depending on their water content which plays heck with basement walls over time, and clay is not very porous so once it's wet it stays wet a long time.

We don't have basements in ark either. North Carolina may be different. Unless you are on the side of a hill, which is pretty much half my street.
I always understood it had something to do with the landscape/rock/soil but it doesn't really matter. I just googled it and apparently in addition to all those reasons plus water tables, it also has something to do with frost lines, which are lower in northern states. Because it's cold.

You don't start seeing basements or storm cellars in Texas, till you're up around Corsicana and further North.
In the Hill Country, the limestone is indeed, the stopper. I lived in San Antonio, '76 to '99, and couldn't dig a hole to bury a pet cat that'd died of old age.
South of San Antonio, onward to the coast here, it's hit or miss where you can dig deeply, or where the hole is gonna fill up with water before you get it dug.
Thing is, no one is going to make plans to build a cellar, when the odds starting out are against you.

Bingo. The further north you go, obviously the freeze line (underground) gets deeper. This has a lot to do with where the water line enters the house, so basements are more practical.
Unless you have a split level (up north), where the bottom level is more like the basement. I have a huge basement (~1400 square feet), and my house was built by Centex (Central Texas Construction, based in Dallas), so obviously, Texas companies know how to build basements, if possible.
A lot of houses I know of in Ohio and Kentucky are just built on slabs.

You have to dig your footings 4 feet down to get below the frost line. So they have to dig halfway to basement depth already. The cost to make a full basement is partially paid for and to make a full basement ads value.
