This article is old and kind of silly (since #IceCreamGate wasn't on the day itself), and the Republicans did similar with their gay #memday Bush 43 coffee mugs. Arguably what the Republicans did was even more tone-deaf.
Anyway here is what Obama actually did say today: Hi, everybody. This weekend is Memorial Day-a time to pay tribute to all our men and women in uniform who've ever given their lives so that we can live in freedom and security. This year, the holiday is especially meaningful. It's the first Memorial Day since our war ended in Afghanistan. http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/memorial-day_955196.html Hooray, our war ended in Afghanistan, says Barky. Me me me! Well think about it. For a socialist organization bordering on flat out communism, celebrating the honored dead of soldiers in the past brings a nation together rather than fragments, reminds people of sacrifice and duty rather than self and comfort, and gives a sense of tradition and continued national identity they're trying to demolish.
So better to work the cult of personality and the idea of parties, weekends, fun, and barbecues so people ignore the true meaning of Memorial Day. After all, venerating the past, military culture, and history is fascist, just ask Howard Zinn. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at May 25, 2015 04:12 PM (39g3+) 37

For our disloyal opposition, by Rudyard Kipling
Memories 1930 "The eradication of memories of the Great War. -SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT ORGAN The Socialist Government speaks:THOUGH all the Dead were all forgot And razed were every tomb, The Worm-the Worm that dieth not Compels Us to our doom. Though all which once was England stands Subservient to Our will, The Dead of whom we washed Our hands, They have observance still. We laid no finger to Their load. We multiplied Their woes. We used Their dearly-opened road To traffic with Their foes: And yet to Them men turn their eyes, To Them are vows renewed Of Faith, Obedience, Sacrifice, Honour and Fortitude! Which things must perish. But Our hour Comes not by staves or swords So much as, subtly, through the power Of small corroding words. No need to make the plot more plain By any open thrust; But-see Their memory is slain Long ere Their bones are dust! Wisely, but yearly, filch some wreath- Lay some proud rite aside- And daily tarnish with Our breath The ends for which They died. Distract, deride, decry, confuse- (Or-if it serves Us-pray!) So presently We break the use And meaning of Their day! Posted by: SDN at May 25, 2015 05:17 PM (p/ktF) 109

I know a fellow at church who went to Harvard Law with Obama. He knew him there and said he got good grades. I asked this guy if he actually voted for Obama. He admitted doing so. I know I must have looked dumbfounded because he said he now had "questions" about whether that was a good idea. I told him I thought Obama was a traitor, deserved to be impeached, tried and convicted, and that Hell would freeze over before I'd shake Obama's hand. Moreover, I'd be hard put to keep a civil tongue in my head if I got within shouting distance of him. When he asked me why I disliked Obama so intensely, I started with the $19 trillion debt, then moved on to Gerald Walpin and the political weaponization of the IRS. At that point he said he had to go someplace and left quickly.
You know, we're supposed to think people from Harvard are actually educated, but this character acted like he hadn't heard of anything but the debt issue. Of course, now that I know he's not only a lawyer, but an Obama voter, I realize that I can't trust anything he says any further than I can throw the building we meet in. He and I are supposed to work together on a project but, after that admission, I have no desire to ever have even another word with him anymore, much less work on something together. Listeriosis is a rare but serious illness caused by eating food contaminated with the bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. Anyone who experiences fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, or develops fever and chills after eating the ice cream should seek medical care and tell their health care provider about any history of eating the ice cream. Symptoms can appear from a few days up to a few weeks after consumption of the contaminated food.

My fellow Americans, a few moments ago, for the first time as President,
I paid tribute at this tomb where American soldiers were laid to rest. Their names are known only to God. But there is much we do know about them and about all the others we remember today. We know that they all loved their lives as we love ours. We know they had a place in the world, families waiting for them, and friends they expected to see again. We know that they thought of a future, just as we do, with plans and hopes for a long and full life. And we know that they left those hopes behind when they went to war, and parted with them forever when they died. Every Memorial Day, we try to grasp the extent of this loss and the meaning of this sacrifice. And it always seems more than words can convey. All we can do is remember and always appreciate the price that was paid for our own lives and for our own freedom. (some of the remarks from GW Bush on Memorial Day, 2001. I remember seeing this on TV and how very somber it was) And then Obama licked his ice cream cone, again. I've never heard the weather radio list that many Texas counties before.
And over the border in NW LA, I think we just went from 12 weather alerts to 13 with a tornado watch. The cat is getting annoyed, so I put a pillow over the weather radio. Mac, I know what you mean. Without getting into it too much, the simple explanation is that people I know are mostly, have always been mostly, pretty clueless about public policy and important issues. (this includes many people actually working in the field, BTW)
But whereas before, mostly, the low average info and effective intelligence of so many were merely a drag on the country, in the last few years they have helped create the serious degradation we now see. Was pretty clear from the hysteria over Iraq (well represented in the clueless "conservative" community) and the absolutely jaw-dropping, unbelievable idiocy surrounding Katrina that the country was 1,000% different than it had been just a decade before. But this idiot's election (and esp. re-election), and the near collapse of basic institutions since (const. co-equal branches, a long-declining but now fully insane judiciary, craven rent-seeking corporate fascist partners instead of independent private sector actors, and on and on) illustrated how perilous things are. And so the low-info (educated, urban/suburban, coastal or univ. town) voter was/is now an active part of the country's degradation or even destruction (not in a physical sense). Hard to view these people the same way any more. Posted by: rhomboid at May 25, 2015 06:57 PM (QDnY+) 211

153 mac I knew Obama at Harvard too, which is precisely why there is no way in hell I would ever vote for him. Back during the 2008 election when he was a blank slate (hope, change) and people were projecting their own wishes that he was the bringer of the end of racial strife and all kinds of peace (no red America, no blue America - remember that one?), I was telling everyone I knew who would listen who he really was. He ran with a leftist crowd, and at that place to be a leftist meant you were really completely out of the mainstream of American society and common sense. His voting record showed it, let alone his associations with Wright and Ayres and his mysterious past, but the media engaged in a massive coverup and the LIVs didn't want to know. In a sense, it was so farfetched that the Democrats would run such a candidate that people actually discounted the truth about him and believed that he was a mainstream liberal, like Clinton or Carter. Who could imagine running trillion dollar deficits for years? That became the norm. We have fundamentally transformed, indeed. I remain an optimist and believe we can bring America back, but it will be a struggle that takes decades.
By the way, as to his grades, yes, he had excellent grades, but keep in mind that taking law school exams is an art that is somewhat related to the practice of law but in many ways is not. The key is for the professor to make the exam questions complicated, and then for the student to spot as many issues as possible and mention all of them, if possible with a case that supports the principle of law. "The Plaintiff, trespassing on the property, fell into the pool and was injured, in the process destroying the Defendant's 150-year old manuscript worth $1 million." Interesting, Caesar. The unworldliness of Obama and people like him (in all respects) sort of jumps out right away - but I suppose one has to have some experience and background and at least have thought about public policy issues *a little* (as opposed to trundling along in ignorance, guided by myth, bias, resentment, and self-dealing, as most do) to have it be so obvious.
About bringing America back, the definitional issues there, alone, defy useful discussion in this format. I think a good simplistic way to put one major point, however, is that Obama is a symptom, not a cause. He actually showed not a whit of enterprise or talent in his astonishing, accomplishment-free instantaneous rise from nobody to president. Some advisors' unusual strategy of winning the nomination without actually winning many primaries ("super delegates" for the win) could be seen as clever, but even THAT would have been futile without this amazing, idiotic, cultural/media phenomenon - and crucially, the degraded electorate that actually lapped it up instead of recoiling at it, as most generations of Americans would have done. And all this against the literal living parody of a ridiculously bad and unfit candidate, Hillary, herself running a predictably unskillful campaign. The still-astonishing Joe the Plumber incident actually reflected most of the amazing degradation on so many sides: an oafish unfit candidate walks into a guys' drive-way and a spontaneous question of course leads to a major gaffe, followed by Third World vilification/harrassment of the random citizen. There are many, but that once episode suffices to present an America that is literally unrecognizable to anyone over a certain age. Symptom - disastrous, pernicious, degrading, still hard to believe - but symptom, not cause. Big hill to climb - an few footholds visible .... Posted by: rhomboid at May 25, 2015 07:28 PM (QDnY+) 240

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. The question Arabs have isn't "is ISIS righteous"; it's "is ISIS winning". And the question Muslims have is "is ISIS in accord with the Qur'an and Prophetic Sunna".
The answer to (a) is "duh, yeah?". The answer to (b) is arguable, and even when ISIS breaks truces and shakes down dhimmis what Muslim cares? Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at May 25, 2015 09:20 PM (J0eTB) 405

CADDO PARISH, LA (KSLA) - Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says sheriff's deputies are heading to an area in the western part of the parish, after reports of a "rope tornado" sighting in that area. Prator says the reported twister was headed south-southwest toward Summer Grove. There are also reports of damage on Cook Rd., where a tree has fallen on a mobile home and a power line is down, according to CPSO spokesperson Cindy Chadwick. There are currently reports of wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour by I49 and Bert Kouns. The tornadic storm is now tracking through South Bossier Parish, where a tornado warning is in effect. ** Prayers for Spun and Murky, who said earlier: >>We're about to bail to the shelter. Nip Sip, if you don't have a clue about Houston (or the Gulf Coast generally), then for the love of G-d quit commenting about how lazy those Southern yokels are. Especially in a time of flood.

No actually that has nothing to do with it, dumb ass. In most of the South the water table is lower. It's the red clay and cheap builders. Yankee homeowners expect a basement. Southern homeowners don't.
It's a lot easier to dig out red clay that rock, so you point is totally WRONG. Some varieties of clay shrink or swell depending on their water content which plays heck with basement walls over time, and clay is not very porous so once it's wet it stays wet a long time. Posted by: Hrothgar at May 25, 2015 10:23 PM (ftVQq) 513

My house is on solid granite. Do you know how much it cost to build a pool around here? Like 50% more than other parts of town. Hell, the granite shows up in spots in my backyard. When they put the road in at the back of our development, you should have seen the ginormous rock cut/ crusher they had to bring in. Afterwards, it was like a geological excavation looking at the cross section cut out of the solid granite. Let's just say we don't have foundation issues in this area.

Nip, Thunderdeb is correct. I've been in and around construction in Texas for a very long time, even when I was working as a cop and off into executiveville in the land of suit n' tie.
You don't start seeing basements or storm cellars in Texas, till you're up around Corsicana and further North. In the Hill Country, the limestone is indeed, the stopper. I lived in San Antonio, '76 to '99, and couldn't dig a hole to bury a pet cat that'd died of old age. South of San Antonio, onward to the coast here, it's hit or miss where you can dig deeply, or where the hole is gonna fill up with water before you get it dug. Thing is, no one is going to make plans to build a cellar, when the odds starting out are against you. That's how it is here. Don't believe me? Call the Jim Dutton Home Improvement Show, AM 740, Saturdays, 2 pm to 4 pm, CST. Company I sell for is one of his sponsors. (disclosure). But, the man knows his stuff in Texas building. Posted by: Lea Bingo. The further north you go, obviously the freeze line (underground) gets deeper. This has a lot to do with where the water line enters the house, so basements are more practical. Unless you have a split level (up north), where the bottom level is more like the basement. I have a huge basement (~1400 square feet), and my house was built by Centex (Central Texas Construction, based in Dallas), so obviously, Texas companies know how to build basements, if possible.
