Overnight Open Thread (23 May 2015)

Hope you morons are enjoying your Memorial Day weekend with friends, family, and pets but do take a moment to remember the fallen this weekend. Here is a listing of all state national cemeteries that are having ceremonies.

Logic Puzzle

The simple logical puzzle that shows how illogical people are.

Pool Games

Breath-holding games are killing swimmers, CDC warns. Clearly we must ban holding your breath underwater now.

Fart Symphony

Glamping

Jeez, even camping is getting the wussy treatment. 'Glamping' brings 5-star luxury to the outdoors. When a true calamity hits here, so many people are gonna be boned.

Cardboard UAV

South China Sea

Three ways China and the U.S. could go to war. Gonna get interesting when the Chinese complete their runways on their man made islands and declare an ADIZ.

Golf Course Sinkhole

Has Obama declared a state of emergency yet? Massive sinkhole opens up in the middle of a golf course. A hole in one just got easier on this course!

U.S. Flag Trivia

10 things you didn't know about the American flag.

5 It is now clear that nearly everything Fitzgerald said about Libby's role in the Plame case was false -- and that it was Fitzgerald, not Libby, who had compromised the truth and the judicial process. The proof comes in Miller's The Story: A Reporter's Journey, a memoir released in April. Miller, who would serve as a key witness in the Libby trial, reveals how Fitzgerald deliberately withheld evidence from her and from Libby's lawyers that would have made a guilty verdict all but impossible -- effectively charging that Fitzgerald framed Libby in a blatant act of prosecutorial misconduct.

26 Miller better be right for her own sake, or else Fitz is going to sue her ass right off.

I do remember Kos's "Fitzmas" though. When Fitz rolled out what he had, I dimly remember it being mocked right here as a big nothing. So my instincts are telling me that Miller *is* right and that Fitz had nothing all along.

Um, they've pretty much already declared that.

There was the report earlier this week about the U.S. Navy P-8 crew being aggressively challenged over the radio by the Chinese navy, for flying without permission in what China has now decided is its internal airspace in the middle of the South China Sea.

Some of the flight deck recordings have been released by the USN. I understand that they held back the part where the Chinese officer said over the radio,

117 Russia's foreign ministry has warned its citizens traveling abroad of the risks posed by U.S. law enforcement bodies and special services, which it said were hunting for Russians around the world.

"By believing that it is allowed to do all it wants, Washington goes as far as kidnapping our citizens," the foreign ministry said.

156 Wow, the Blackhawks really tanked fast, huh?

Meanwhile, read this HuffPo (yeah, I know) article about the fast-track trade bill. It sounds like Obama may not get what he wants after all.

"The Senate approved a bill to "fast-track" trade agreements negotiated by the president. The agreement will prevent Congress from amending or filibustering Obama's controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. The TPP deal would have a hard time surviving without fast-track authority.

But a key crackdown on human trafficking survived the legislative jujitsu. The White House considers the provision a deal-breaker, as it would force one of the nations involved in the TPP talks -- Malaysia -- out of the agreement. An immigration-related amendment authored by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) never got a vote, making it far more difficult for Obama to win over skeptical tea party Republicans in the House.

The slavery provision's survival means that the House will either need to amend the bill and send it back to the Senate, which would cause a delay and complicate the House debate, or pass a bill and go to conference with the Senate, also causing a delay."

Pine tar is the offending substance.

202 I didn't like the logic puzzle either. If turning over a blue card doesn't prove the rule (efficiently) then turning over an even number doesn't prove the rule either. If the rule requires an even number showing, the rule is not proven until all even number cards have been inspected which is no more efficient than turning over all the blue cards, or all the odd number cards, or the green one. And it still doesn't prove the rule because there still might be a card the researcher has hidden that disproves the rule. It's a word game, and a mind game, not a logic puzzle.

The second puzzle then goes on to make the very same assumption that the first puzzle says is incorrect. I stopped reading when it said, Assume anyone drinking is over 21.

Only downside was my knee and hip are still too banged up to allow me to do a Memorial Day Murph. But some ice and some good booze is numbing that pain down to an acceptable level.

254 Either card can falsify it, either can support the

of course, irrelevant.

Posted by: Burnt Toast at May 23, 2015 10:45 PM (NaeCR)

Both do not need to be checked because you are not required to be thorough or prove the assertion. You are just required to test by flipping the fewest cards over. As flipping over either of those cards is a test in and of itself, there is no need to flip over the other.
Basically, the phrasing of the problem casts you as a member of a public-sector trade union. If you flip both over, your union bosses will have a talking with you as you're making the others look bad.

291 Wars are started by the leaders of the respective governments. We already know about Obama. What we don't know is if the leader of the Chinese government is ready to go to war to defend a territorial claim.

We suspect, based on past performance, that Obama will not go to war, but we also know that Obama's decisions are based on whim and what is said to him at the time, and his preferred tactic of avoiding making decisions. The most common sense conclusion is China will continue to advance its claim of territory until someone forces the issue, and it won't be Obama who makes a stand.

312 Big thoughts from a little guy hitting the sacramental wine before bedtime.

Big Guy knows what's needed, I absolutely trust that.

It's one of those axioms. If God is, God knows. Givens. That's #theology, regardless what I trust.

So, he said, belaboring to continue (theo)logically, if I lay my problems out before Him, any benefit would come from the experience of thinking things through in partnership with God; I'm not telling Him anything He doesn't already know.

So, knowing He knows, and that He knew from Before the Beginning of Beginnings, then, it behooves us to wait upon the Master Storyteller's Unwindings in all things, abiding in faithful patience with a sense of wonder. "Fear not." And all that. Even, "Be of good cheer." It's not just a good idea. It's the Son of God's command.

But...

But...

Sometimes it seems like He is all, like, "Eternal-destiny, y'know, man; it's covered. Don't worry 'bout the rise and fall of nations or the whole earth passing away thing."

While I'm all, like, "Yeah, but death and taxes, mortal life continuity, grandkids and stuff! About to hit a wall and would like to avoid it. Got any miracles in your bag, there, Supreme One? Hello, Dad? Hello?"

He gave us this time-space life to live, so it sort-of seems like it's up to us to keep reminding him regarding the Urgency of Time in our reckoning.

Know what I mean? Need help now. #twoweeks

Crazy.

Modern Madman's Plea

Help? Help?
Help us help!
Mommy Daddy Mommy Daddy!
Give us the wit and wisdom
to do what's before us now.
What you will.
Yay God.

"Both do not need to be checked because you are not required to be
thorough or prove the assertion. You are just required to test by
flipping the fewest cards over. As flipping over either of those cards
is a test in and of itself, there is no need to flip over the other.
Basically,
the phrasing of the problem casts you as a member of a public-sector
trade union. If you flip both over, your union bosses will have a
talking with you as you're making the others look bad."

Both cards DO need to be turned over. If for example you turn over the green card to find an odd number, you have not tested the assertion; it can still be either true or false at that point. There is a difference between *can* falsify and *does* falsify.

393 More for @377

It was covered in post 503 of last night's ONT.

Even after the ownership of an email account is reset, anyone who was logged into it with a POP3 client can see, read, and delete emails sent to that account until the link is reset (which may involve closing the POP3 client or rebooting the computer). SMTP, the transmitting protocol, requires valid id/password for each SENT message.....but my attacker has had that off-and-on. So he's been able to read emails to me since about Wednesday before last and send emails as me sporadically during the same period.

Well, you can always see Jupiter and Venus with the naked eye, if they are above the horizon. They are the two brightest objects in the night sky, other than our own Moon. Even binoculars or a small telescope will resolve those planets to a disc, and you see the phases of Venus, like the phases of the Moon.

When they immediately destroy the concept the day after you leave and go back to the stupid shit that's not working why bother? I'm surprised they're still open actually. I was skeptical, but open to Moron Recommendations.

Anyhoo, I watched the show tonight, and the whole thing is pretty good, but Tucker's bit is really, really funny.

SNL could learn a thing or two from the panel, and Tucker's talk in particular.

461 Coldbeer1 I'm not very bright... I'm a bit buzzed had a not so fun ending to what was supposed to be a fun evening...I'm worried about one friend... Pissed at, hurt by & missing another that vanished. I'm just melancholy I guess. ...think I'll go back to the bar.

463 I'm arguing with a Twelve-Year-Old.

*cracks a Final Beer*

-For those who have fought.
-For those who have paid the Ultimate Price for my Freedom to sit at a computer and spew my special brand of bullshit?

I Thank You

-I thank you and those that surrounded you. I thank you for your bravery in the face of those who would end our way of life.

-I thank you for facing the unknown on a daily basis.

-I thank you for volunteering while I sat on my ass, writing about your bravery.

-I thank you for defending the Freedoms allowed by the Constitution of these great United States of America.

I thank you because I am simply an idiot with a keyboard. Without your sacrifice, I am a douchebag without reverence for greatness achieved through Righteous Indignation.

God Bless those who have laid the ultimate sacrifice upon the Altar of Freedom.

God Bless these Great United States of America.

Thank You.

-Good Night, Everybody.

Amen brother. It's depressing to think about all those good men who gave their last full measure of devotion just so freeloading retards and power-mad psychopaths could piss away all they fought to secure. It's depressing but I'll do it anyway because it's the right thing to do. Although it's not depressing to think about what THEY did, they've already earned their place at God's side, it's us the living who'll have to face the music for what's happened to what they've left, and that's depressing.

468 Come on, troll, tell us why we should vote for Hillary!

Russians in Crimea, Middle East in flames, Iran about to get the bomb, China's Fuck You America Bank, Bill's Rape Coverup Fund, deleting e-mails, breaking State Department regulations, lying about Benghazi, but hey look at all the Airmiles the drunken fatass racked up!

sinks, cigarette burns in the carpets, messes on the beds and a car in
the swimming pool

477 Hillary! ran in 2008, didn't she?

I think I remember that.

Carville was really angry about something.

Did she become Presidentess and I missed it?

Or did Madame Blofeld lose what she was supposed to win, and resign herself to merely messing up some simple Russian translations, the Middle East, the Far East, Europe, Central America, South America, and the Antipodes?

478 Also being complicit in killing an American ambassador, but you wouldn't give a fuck about that, would you, captain*arizona?

Why do you hate gays and want to see them murdered by Libyan mobs, captain*arizona?

A vote for Hillary! is a vote for assassinating ambassadors.

485 CDR: Although, your point that every swimmer holds their breath while it the pool is well-taken. I certainly spent entire days swimming underwater holding my breath. Young girls love to pretend they are mermaids . However, many lifeguards (or former guards) have experienced pulling out idiots who drown, or nearly drown, after hyperventilating to hold their breath longer, while attempting to swim underwater for extended periods. One of our swim team members, attempted to swim too many laps underwater and passed out. We found him in time, but during resuscitation, we could not bring him back before permanent brain damage occurred. The warning to be aware of the danger should not be ignored.
