Quote of the Day I

Dire predictions are the bread and butter of the climate alarmist community. In January of 2009, NASA scientist and climate zealot Dr. James Hansen predicted eco-doom just a little sooner. "We cannot afford to put off change any longer," said Hansen. "We have to get on a new path within this new administration. We have only four years left for Obama to set an example to the rest of the world. America must take the lead."

Which hasn't happened. As an odd twist of fate, America has reduced its carbon emissions, though only as an inadvertent byproduct of economic decline and stagnation, something President Obama would rather not take credit for.

-- Benny Huang

Quote of the Day II

The Pentagon has an unrivaled comic genius when it comes to naming its operations. General Weidley is Chief of Staff, Joint Task Force for "Operation Inherent Resolve". If one had to name the single quality most obviously lacking in local ground forces, in the "60-nation coalition" and in US strategists, that would be it. Iraqi troops fled their US-supplied government buildings and then, at the edge of town, abandoned their US-supplied Humvees to melt into the local population, hopefully with nothing US-supplied about their person to give them away. The Humvees and the buildings are now in the hands of Isis. That's the great thing about taking on a "60-nation coalition". When you roll over them in nothing flat, the stuff they leave behind is world-beating state-of-the-art.

Almost exactly twelve years ago, I spent two days in Ramadi - one coming, one going. I wandered around the streets, browsed the shops, ate in the cafes, all in the same suit-and-tie get-up you can see me in on stage and telly. And I got the odd surly look but no beheading. Because, in the spring of 2003, the west was still believed to be serious. Now they know we're not.

-- Mark Steyn

Quote of the Day III

So the result of Obama's extension of an olive branch to the mullahs, his pursuit of realignment and peace in the Middle East, is a regional nuclear arms race.

There is a pattern here. In Iraq, Obama and his advisers were persuaded that the most malignant factor on the ground was the United States itself. So we withdrew our troops, effectively to zero. Meanwhile, Syria descended into civil war, and after some initial, ill-considered bluffing, Obama finally showed his hand, which is the same hand he always holds and always plays: He was going to take no effective military action.

...The resulting administration grand strategy is not realism, but a kind of loose noninterventionism with just enough pinpoint military action to kill the occasional terrorist and to give Americans a vague sense that something is being done to keep them safe. It is what Joseph Joffe memorably calls "self-containment," or "isolationism with drones."

-- Aaron MacLean in Isolationism With Drones

Quote of the Day IV - Wait I Thought Locally-Sourced Sustainable Production Was Good Edition

"Our culture has become obsessed of late with the virtues of the locally sourced: local vegetables, local meats, local soaps. We've heard much about the moral worth of do-it-yourselfism and the soul-enhancing virtues of shop class. But there's a darker side to locophilia and the DIY movement, a place where the self-reliance of the woodshop putterer meets the libertarian zeal of the garage gunsmith. If the growing black market in homemade firearms evokes a bygone era of small-scale experiment and chance invention, it presages a frightening future of proliferation and lethality that medieval gunsmiths could hardly have imagined."

-- Bruce Holsinger in Slate

Quote of the Day V

Remember: when leftists say they want a "conversation about race," they mean-you shut up and confess your white guilt. Oh, and raise taxes.

-- Steven Hayward in Civil War on the Left, Part 19

Quote of the Day VI

Life's never as good as it looks on Facebook or as bad as it sounds on Twitter.

Meet the NYFD's Least Qualified New Firefighter

During her training Rebecca Wax, 33, failed the Functional Skills Training test many, many times. In fact she was only able to even finish it a single time - and that was with a time 5 minutes over the cutoff.

But thanks to her skills in political connections and threatening lawsuits she now gets to join the force anyway. Note that she already got a special waiver in 2011 to be allowed into training after the cutoff age of 29.

The FDNY for the first time in its history will allow someone who failed its crucial physical fitness test to join the Bravest, The Post has learned.

Rebecca Wax, 33, is set to graduate Tuesday from the Fire Academy without passing the Functional Skills Training test, a grueling obstacle course of job-related tasks performed in full gear with a limited air supply, an insider has revealed.

"They're going to allow the first person to graduate without passing because this administration has lowered the standard," said the insider, who is familiar with the training.

Upon graduation, Wax would be assigned to a firehouse and tasked with the full duties of a firefighter.

And note that other women in her class were able to pass the same test and are not happy with Wax's special treatment.

While Wax fell short, two other female probies in the graduating class passed the FST with flying colors.

"They're kicking butt. They're doing better than 50 percent of the class," the insider said. "When they get assigned to a firehouse, they'll be welcomed with open arms because they've done what everyone else has gone through."

Other female firefighters aren't pleased about Wax's treatment, either.

"A lot of the girls in the field are pissed because they feel like they're getting lumped into the same category of a female getting special treatment and not meeting the same standards as the males," the insider added. "It devalues what the women in the field have accomplished."

How Flawed Statistics Create Policies That Ruin Lives

Actually they're not flawed - they're simply lies made up by activists and swallowed uncritically by the MSM.

But 1-in-5 isn't the only statistic being used to create these new policies. Now that the issue is consistently in the news, other statistics with equally dubious origins are cropping up.

One is that only 2 percent of rape accusations are false. This factoid traces back to a single source (Susan Brownmiller's 1975 book Against Our Will), which in turn cites a police officer talking about a study that no one has been able to find. But from this dubious claim springs the dogma that one must therefore believe all rape-accusers to be true victims.

Couple the notion that all accusers must be believed to another statistic - that relatively few men commit the majority of sexual assaults - and the prevailing logic becomes that anyone accused of sexual assault must immediately be treated as a serial rapist, because they likely are or will be.

Exploiting Social Justice Warriors for Fun and Profit

SJWs may have sound and fury but they don't usually have any staying power. And standing your ground during the Mad Week also buys you a kind of counter-mob credibility.

The social justice left is only truly strong when it exercises lawful power - such as when it runs your company, your school, or your government. Yet even then it's often constrained by the Constitution, statutes, regulations, and contracts. When the social justice mob is confined to public shaming, its cultural power is limited to the credibility and seriousness others give it. In other words, if a target can withstand a week's worth of hashtags, Buzzfeed will post another battery of kitten photos and pop culture quizzes ("What Does Your Fave '90's Cartoon Say About Your Personality?) and the angry kids will move on.

Sometimes, however, targets can fight back and actually profit off a social shame campaign. Just ask Protein World.

...This is a valuable insight. Capitulation doesn't make the other side love or respect a company - nor will it make them buy the company's products - but standing up for your products can be seen as equivalent to standing up for the choices and values of your customers. They'll love you for it and spread the word. This is a lesson American companies - and American politicians - would do well to learn.

Strange Certifications One Can Earn Online

Lactation Consultant

If you'd like to consult women in the best ways to secret milk from their breasts, look no further than the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. It seems you may need to have some clinical experience in lactation and breastfeeding, but for those of you who have put in your hours, getting validated online is a cinch.

I wonder if they sell a t-shirt with your certification on the front so that your uh 'patients' know you're all legit and stuff.

1 Rick Santorum, A Paragon of Tolerance

When Bruce Jenner, the soon to be transsexual, came out of the closet as a Christian and a conservative, many on the left flipped out and started hurling "transphobic" insults and otherwise venting pure distilled H8. Who was it, then, that stood up and defended Bruce Jenner as a human being deserving of respect? None other than Rick Santorum.

136 I watched a panel of conservative authors talk about Dadly Virtues and the Worst Job You'll Ever Love" on YouTube last night and I laughed my ass off. It was held at the American Enterprise Institute and the moderator was (the childless) Rob Long, and the participants were Jonah Goldberg, James Lileks, P.J. O'Rourke, Tucker Carlson, Jonathan V. Last and Stephen Hayes. They talked about their worst moments as dads and they were far funnier than 10 years worth of SNL skits.

I expected Lileks and O'Rourke to be funny, but the real surprise was Tucker Carlson. I've never been a fan of his, but he hit it out of the park here. I not only never expected him to be that amusing, but he also surprised by revealing himself to be both a long-time chewing tobacco addict (as was P.J.) a hunter, and a guy whose eldest kid is 21 years old. I have a tough time visualizing Mr. Bowtie stuffing a wad of dip in his mouth before heading off to the deer stand.

158 As for the names of characters. That can lead to some lively discussions.

Some people struggle to find names. Usually in the quest to imbue further meaning. For example Ben Bova had a human named Holman. It turns out he is the last human left in the universe being pursued by aliens who want to exterminate humanity.

Me I find the characters naming themselves. Like the story that is now 1,300+ words long - Combat Meido Alice. We have Alice, Sung, and Miyaka as the main characters.

160 The SJWs have taken over birthing as much as anything else.

There's this whole movement to have the baby "room in" as much as possible, which is good in theory, but not so much in practice.

I had c-sections with all my kiddos and I am one of those people who gets very, very drowsy with pain meds. I remember nursing one of my babies and not realizing that I had fallen asleep until a nurse came in to check our vitals. Thankfully we were both fine, but a drugged up mom in a hospital bed isn't exactly a safe situation for a newborn.

But if you say you want to send the baby to the nursery, they look at you like you've requested to drop your baby off a 10 story building. If you want your baby with you 24/7 that should be an option, but hospitals are completely doing away with nurseries these days, and I think that's absolutely ridiculous.

I can nurse and bond with my baby jsut fine without risking accidentally suffocating her, thank you.

To be fair, our parents were raised with the notion that formula was the new and improved way to nourish an infant. So there is a whole population out there that has no skills or tribal knowledge to pass down. That, and there is something to be said for a little comfort and reassurance for a new mother who just pooped out 7+ pounds of awkward screaming infant that there is hope that the little alien creature actually can be nourished by her.
As I understand it, it is not all that automatic, and too many new mothers give up, because formula is easy, despite the breastfeeding benefits, like motorboating.

For something completely different, I have been giving my 3 yo getting hit on the head lessons. Wife just rolls her eyes.

338 My life as a phantom shitter.

So many moons ago, I was a young idealistic noob, standing watch, deep in the bowels of the boat. We were haze gray and underway, as they say, and the local cuisine was not agreeing with me.

Try as I might, but to no avail, I could not get any relief, because it was the night before field day, so everyone was tucked away in their racks. Being idealistic. I was not about to abandon my post for a head break. So I gathered my plastic garbage bag and a stack of KimWipes, and I made the walk of shame outboard of the starboard condenser. Cut to Dumb and Dumber toilet scene.

Anyway, relieved and refreshed, I finished the rest of my watch. Being that it was field day, I left my bag, dutifully bagged and sealed and suitably taped, so as to prevent any escape of my demons. Then it's off to chow, shower and the rack for the next watch.

For those that don't know, on a submarine, there is a trash disposal unit (TDU) that is essentially a 3000# hyrdraulic ram that smashes the trash into these little weighted canisters. The caveat being that they don't smash the wet trash, but just place it in gently.

Mine was not labeled or otherwise identifiable as wet trash.

You can imagine the fountain of excrement that sprayed from the TDU and the look of horror that must have overcome the operator.

In any event, I only heard of all this after, having been suitably rested, having had chow and wondering what all the bitching was about - "I could kill the guy if I find out," yadda, yadda - and then going back to my watch station and having my Chief come and ask me point blank. As it turns out, the entire off-going watch section (not mine), had to field day the entire mess decks TCU area.

The best part is the weasel coner Chief of the Watch (MTC, I believe) wanted my head, but because of the message it would send (honest mistake, not abandoning my post, honestly owning up) to punish my behavior, they merely made me go forward and help clean up. After about two minutes, they called it complete and I was back on watch.

So honesty can still be the better policy.

365 One of the funniest things about this whole experience -- and there have been some funny ones, however it comes out -- is that the perp ran off to raid the xbox games out of my microsoft.com account. I loathe, despise, and abhor microsoft, have never owned an xbox, and may have set the account up 15 years ago for a free promotional version of solitaire they were giving out that I haven't played in 14.9 years, specially now 'cause it's on a computer that no longer works. If someone had ASKED ME for it, I might have freely handed it over, provided there was a way to do so.

This guy is rooting around in the detritus of a life well-lived, trying to find the magic key that will make him me.....and, even if I croaked tomorrow and willed every online password and account to him -- he'd still be who he is.

Whether it's Ira or not, and BOY HASN'T IRA'S EXPLOSION BEEN EXTRAORDINARY AND TIMELY, it's simultaneously pathetic. I'm nothing. I lead a boring life. I had a boring amazon wishlist. My amazon order history was boring. I receive regular emails from the Institute of Internal Auditors for Christ's sake. The fact that someone could imagine that a guy going by "cthulhu" could be cool is just ridonkulous -- The Call of Cthulhu was published in 1928 -- and when they were handing out "cool" emails on the domain I use, it was the 80s. [That's a reason I never jumped onto "cool domains" -- I wanted to leave room.]

I'm looking to hang onto an account that I've had for decades to try and have a trail for long-lost contacts to find me; he's thinking that he'll instantly be as popular as I am if he can just take my name. Which of us is more deluded?

And the saddest thing.....he could be clever. He's intelligent. He's charming. He has PEOPLE SKILLS!!!!!! He could probably be more by himself than I ever was. He even snookered my ex-boss....and I'm still LMFAO over the "It's a spoof" mic-drop, 'cause as soon as he heard that he knew it was true.

But now I'm doing the long grind of rebuilding control -- and, like I said, Internal Audit......I'm gonna grind it. And when I'm done, it will stay ground.

Sunday was with our godsons at Maker Faire. When it came to kids, we didn't buy -- we rented. One of the fiancee's fond memories is having #1 godson repeatedly puke all over her -- one of mine was having him go into full meltdown at the local park, scooping him up, and marching him the long blocks home squawling and wailing on my shoulder.....knowing our last names didn't match. There's a technical widgetism that allows you to spy on emails, even if you're not in the account. I boosted the guy from the account, and should know if he reasserts ownership.....but any emails to me might get copied to him and read -- and possibly deleted without my knowing. Oddly enough, (until he reasserts ownership), emails from me should be ok. If there's any confusion, you'll just have to rely on my generic squeaky voice.

I don't want payment -- and that this has happened means I've got a buttload to do whether or not he freely confesses all his trespasses to me and gives me detailed logs of where he went and what he did (which I wouldn't expect and, truthfully, wouldn't trust). But I can do it trying to shield a Moron from consequences or I can do it trying to get it fixed and shutting down the weaknesses.

Just as a random hint....don't fuck around with customer service, contact the Corporate Counsel. If you get flailed around with that, try the Audit Committee of the BoD. It's still time-consuming and creaky, but you're more likely to get things done. Don't forget that everyone's got a whistleblower hotline because of Sarbanes-Oxley. If you've got the right sort of story (like "gee, what's going to happen to this one-click revenue when nobody in their right mind stores a credit-card on Amazon" -- consider informing the audit firm. The question will get asked, and even if the answer is accepted this quarter ("we're pushed for time"), it'll bubble up next quarter as well....I've spent a few decades in accounting and know how it works.

468 Yeah the whole drinking beer - and not nursing it, but slamming that shit - is amazing. Just the way things are done.

I always enjoy the menus - want a beer? $1.50 (Euros, of course).

Want a water with gas? $2.50

Want a Coke, in a tall narrow glass with no ice? $3.00

No wonder they all drink beer at lunch - it is literally cheaper than water and Coke! Plus it tastes so much better!

Do you intend to play nice? I'm a big fan of redemption, and certain characteristics of your posting have been similar to folks who were recently banned -- that doesn't mean that you are that recently-banned person or that you deserve to be banned in any way shape or form -- or that I have any power to ban you......but if there were a three-factor banning, I may have spotted one -- which I might know about 'cause I've been around forever.

But I'm really not in the banning business and would prefer to speak of redemption. I live in the constant hope of redemption, because people are flawed.

473 Yeah, and that $3 in CGN or more likely $5 in Paris only buys you a dinky 11oz old-style bottle of Coke that they pulled out of the crappy fridge they have so it is basically room temperature.

But you know what - good on them. Coke is an American thing, and a huge Coke with ice (like you would get at a Mickey Ds drive through) is a giant "America, FUCK YEAH!!"

It would look ridiculous on a tiny table in French bistro.

So when you are in France or Germany, don't order a damn Coke! Just go with what the locals have - in France it is most likely wine, in Germany it is most likely beer. But get whatever is made locally, because it will for damn sure be better than some bottle of Coke shipped from the states!

Actually, that works for any travel. Find out what the locals are ordering, and then get that. The locals get it for a reason!

Sinor, are you sure?

It really does awaken you to how much soft drinks are a part of American culture but are basically luxuries elsewhere.
