That Positive Train Control Mechanism That Progs Keep Citing as Their Proof the Derailment Was Caused by Republicans...? It *Was* Installed on the Train, Just Not Turned On

It costs $15 billion in stimulus to turn something on or something.

The speed of the Amtrak train that crashed and killed at least eight people surged from 70mph to 106mph just seconds before it derailed, it has been revealed.

...

It has also been claimed that 'Positive Train Control' - used to slow the train down - was actually installed but wasn't turned on, leading to the fatalities and more than 200 injuries.

The agency are trying to figure out whether he increased the speed of the train manually

Bostian complained that the technology to stop accidents had been around for 80 years but was not widely installed - including on the curve where he crashed.

His lawyers have said he does not remember anything of the crash.

...

The Federal Communication Commission has spent $110million on the system, and are now trying to figure out why it hadn't been turned on.

...

Over the years Bostian made dozens of posts on industry website Trainorders.com that were linked to him by the New York Times. The forum confirmed he had made them.

...

NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt said it was unclear whether Bostian had manually increased the speed - but insisted he was the only one who could have done it.

However he doesn't think he did it deliberately. He said: 'If we thought that, we wouldn't be here, because that would be a criminal act.

'And we don't investigate criminal acts.'

Well, someone increased the train's speed from 70 mph to 107 mph, just in front of a deadly sharp curve.

It's not as if we've never seen someone deliberately crash a passenger vehicle. It just happened over France.

And If This All Wasn't Suspcious Enough Already... Weird thing -- the Positive Train Control was installed and was active -- on the other side of the curve.

That is, had this engineer been going north to south, he could not have derailed the train, as this PCT would have prevented him. (Assuming the PCT couldn't be disabled by a saboteur -- which I actually don't assume.)

If I understand this right, the only direction one could derail the train due to "human error" was in the south to north direction.

20 'tis still the republicans fault because the FCC is a dysfunctional federal agency due to the 3-3 split between Dem and GOP. Every vote is deadlocked along party lines and nothing can be done.

So the FCC permitting process is deadlocked, and AMTRAK couldn't get a permit to turn on the very new, very untested, very high bandwidth system that costs billions and no one knows if it will work because it hasn't been turned on yet.

So it's the fault of the GOP because democrats are progressive and believe in Science!

Could be - depends on his head injuries.

Had a family member who worked with people recovering from a coma (so serious head injuries). Apparently her patients couldn't remember the 10-20 seconds leading up to their accident because the conversion of short-term--->long term memory of that moment was interrupted.

As it was mentioned that the train had entered a max 50 MPH curve doing 107 MPH, I looked up and realized that I was in a 50 MPH zone myself at that very moment.

Yet somehow I had managed, without automated safety controls, to maintain the speed of the vehicle at a close approximation to the posted limit.

Anyway. I can tell you likely why the system wasn't "turned on"

Unions are notorious for opposing automation (even protective automation) that takes the actions that are being taken in the first place by a Union employee. They see such systems as the first step to complete replacement of the Union member with Automation. If there was protective automation available but not in use.....look to the Unions as to why it wasn't in use.

We had an ugly Metrolink train derailment out here in Commiefornia, obviously down to excessive speed, where the operator also initially tried to play the amnesia card. (I suspect the union lawyers coach them in this.)

Turns out the guy had been texting on his phone instead of monitoring his speed. Texting to an underage kid in whom said operator displayed an unusual level of interest.

My son learned about this in EMT training. Whe accident victims come to in the amberlamps, they are almost always disoriented and want to know "What happened?"

My son, being my son, was thinking about all the ways to f--k with them in that state.

"What happened? You don't remember shooting all of those people."

170 I've been on the edges of this for a number of years, having brokered an agreement between Cosworth and number of Class 8 equipment manufacturers to supply telemetry on trucks coming into the U.S. from Mexico.

Later, we looked at a system to interface the RFID tags on individual tank cars to provide the identification to adjust specific train units to changes in the manifest. An example would be that a freight train coming from the west coast stops and picks up oil tank cars in the Midwest. Due to new restrictions, the train would be limited on speed and certain routes with the addition of these cars. The overall system would recognize that and send the limiting info back to the engine.

Of course, what would take weeks in the private sector takes decades dealing with the government.

And NTSB accident reports are not admissible as evidence. The reason is to encourage people to tell the truth to the NTSB so that remedial steps can be taken without witnesses fearing that their testimony will lead to criminal charges or civil liability.

If charges are to be brought or civil penalties sought then they have to be done without the help of the NTSB.

Having been on the eeevviiilll plaintiff's side of personal injury, I can tell you that the people who were in the accident have no freaking idea what happened. No one is lying about it, they just don't remember. Which means what they do "remember" usually isn't what happened.

This is where you explain to clients that the other guy isn't lying, s/he just doesn't remember it they way the client does. Mind you, sometimes everyone is completely and totally lying about everything. But oftentimes it's merely a matter of people "remembering" things that never happened.

Cop opened the snark with "Whatcha doin' there, Mario?"

Sean responded "Damn, officer. I almost didn't MAKE that curve!"

Cop was reaching for his handcuffs until he recognized me. I worked at the pancake house where the local PD always hung out.

Just like a car, when you hit the brakes in a turn the center of gravity shifts forward, which would give more force on the front wheel set and less on the back. This could cause the rear wheels to jump the track and pull all the remaining cars along with it.

Better to not hit the brakes while in a turn.

Well some of that makes sense. Its not like they've got a big kitchen, or nice facilities, they have to pay for storage and everything is expensive on a train to run and keep, and they need to pay someone extra to prepare it, etc. Its like food on planes, its just spendy to supply and prep it, more so than a restaurant.

You don't need GPS. It's on tracks. It can't get "lost", and there are no steering decisions to make. You could simply put a bar code scanner on the locomotive, set up to read bar codes on posts near the track, and adjust the speed accordingly. I could think of a dozen ways to do it that would involve neither GPS or the use of radio channels requiring FCC regulation.

322 Eating on a train is way different than on a plane. For one thing you sit at a table, with silverware, and can see the countryside as it goes by. For another the quality is usually way better, and the servings bigger.

But boy is it expensive. That's the major expense on trains that is hidden. Since it takes longer, you have to pack your own food or pay movie theater prices for your food. It used to be that the train was cheaper than flying, but barely by enough to make up for the food costs. I think the train is pretty close to flying now, and the only benefit is you don't have to take your shoes off and get groped by a sick puke wearing blue gloves.

All modern trains are basically electric. The difference is where they get the power for the electric motors. On long distance freights they have a diesel engine that turns a generator that powers an electric motor. That way no gearing and more controllable.

Several commenters on the other article said they'd ridden the train in that area and it's not uncommon for the local kids/thugs of unknown origin to throw rocks at passing trains. If a rock/brick did go through the front window it would probably still be found in the engine compartment. That would be a criminal investigation though.

Electric motors can accelerate pretty quickly, especially when they don't have too much inertia to overcome. The motors on the train are designed to overcome the inertia of tons of railroad cars at a dead stop and get them moving. Once they are already going at 70 mph, it does not take that much to get them going even faster. Especially, as was pointed out, when you have the electric generating capacity of the eastern United States to draw on.

Although I have never ridden in one, I am told that Tesla cars can accelerate really quickly which is disconcerting because they are also really quiet.

I know the trains can speed up very quickly. My question is whether the limiter systems works that fast to prevent that from happening.

I don't know. I assume that's the point of it. I assume the response time would be in milliseconds. In other words, I push the accelerator thingy, the system goes nope nope and the acceleration never happens.

I assume that's how it happens but I don't know that.

Posted by: mynewhandle at May 15, 2015 03:02 PM (AkOaV)"

They should not have to switch locomotives. The thing that moves the train are big electric motors on each of the axles. What the diesel motor does is spin a generator which produces electricity to run the electric motors. When there are catenary wires over head, the diesel engine can be switched off and the electric power from the wire can be used to run the electric motors on the axles.

By the way, one of the things that puzzles me about the trains that carry shipping containers from the Port of Long Beach up over the mountains and to the rest of America is why they do not have catenary wires running through the LA basin. I mean they are so paranoid about air pollution there and it would also save significant bucks to not run the diesel engine for the first 80 to 100 miles.

Amtrak uses diesel electric locomotives like freight trains do. The TGV in France uses the type of set up that you are talking about. They use a truck that is shared by two cars and the wheels on the truck have an electric motor on each axle. That means that both acceleration and regenerative braking are applied evenly along the length of the train.

Well, if the ABS is working, that won't happen. ABS releases the brakes for a fraction of a second, repeatedly, to prevent the wheels from locking and breaking traction. And if the ABS isn't working, I'd sooner flat-spot 4 tires in a parking lot to find out, than find out the hard way.

536 Way late to the thread, but I mentioned this to wife this afternoon, how often have you ever heard of a copy-cat killer on crime shows? Except, in this case, they don't have a wide body jet to slam into the Alps. Just a rudimentary understanding of Newton's suggestions Laws, the first one in particular. And a train.

One and a half minutes before curve you put the pedal to the medal, then at the exactly worst second (for the safety of the passengers) you hit the brakes. Instead of rounding the curve and failing, the train plowed straight ahead. An apple didn't have to smash forcefully into Newton's noggin for him to figure this out. Try it yourself, someplace safe. It's easier, and safer, at low speed, on snow and ice. Speed, a curve, then brakes, equals out of control forward motion. Not occasionally, every time.

This is a copy-cat suicide/homocide case. It should be interestingly to watch all the players in the game shuffle around, obfuscate, and tell us to ignore our lying eyes. All because some tiny, tiny group with an agenda has brainwashed the media and television to portray them as victims, above reproach. Fuck that, no one is above reproach. I'll include myself.

Just for fun, watch the movie 'Basic Instinct' and wonder which group of individuals got their panties in a twist about the plot. Was the movie stereotypical? Hardly. But hardly an inaccurate portrayal.

Posted by: SE Pa Moron at May 15, 2015 06:18 PM (xQX/f)

537 After reading about half of the comments I see that people don't understand 'retrograde amnesia' which will undoubtedly be Choo Choo's defense. He doesn't remember. May or not be true. If it was his intent to derail the train, which was in his mind minutes before the crash *that* he will remember. The actual crash with concussion, probably not. So that's an important question he needs to be asked under oath. *That* he will remember.

Memory is like a two step process: imagine a road crew laying fresh asphalt on your street. One machine lays the asphalt, a couple minutes later some steamroller pounds the hot asphalt down, all nice and flat. The initial memory is the asphalt being laid, but it's not permanent until the steamroller comes along, minutes later. It's probably a chemical process but real nevertheless.

I swear this is true. All night long, at that exact moment, I am awake. If my wife were to whisper in my ear, 'Are you awake?' I would answer yes. Because I am. It's only after the steamroller comes along, minutes later, that my awareness is pounded into lack of memory.

I've actually tested this on my wife* (scaring the bejesus out of her in the process) and found it to be true. She's awake. All night long. It's not until the steamroller comes along, minutes later, that her experience of being asleep is cemented.

* Don't try this at home. We're both pros in our field so this kinda stuff we slough off. YMMV.
