The Federal Communication Commission has spent $110million on the system, and are now trying to figure out why it hadn't been turned on. ... Over the years Bostian made dozens of posts on industry website Trainorders.com that were linked to him by the New York Times. The forum confirmed he had made them. ... NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt said it was unclear whether Bostian had manually increased the speed - but insisted he was the only one who could have done it. However he doesn't think he did it deliberately. He said: 'If we thought that, we wouldn't be here, because that would be a criminal act. 'And we don't investigate criminal acts.'
And If This All Wasn't Suspcious Enough Already... Weird thing -- the Positive Train Control was installed and was active -- on the other side of the curve. That is, had this engineer been going north to south, he could not have derailed the train, as this PCT would have prevented him. (Assuming the PCT couldn't be disabled by a saboteur -- which I actually don't assume.) If I understand this right, the only direction one could derail the train due to "human error" was in the south to north direction.

So the FCC permitting process is deadlocked, and AMTRAK couldn't get a permit to turn on the very new, very untested, very high bandwidth system that costs billions and no one knows if it will work because it hasn't been turned on yet.

True enough. I drove my car over a (small) cliff (really, a very steep ravine between sides of the highway), and don't remember anything after hitting the brakes (and not feeling anything underneath).
Mind you, I *do* remember waking up, realizing I was on gravel, and hitting the brakes. Everything after that until I woke up in the back seat of my car is a complete blank. (For which, really, I'm grateful.)

Could be - depends on his head injuries.
Had a family member who worked with people recovering from a coma (so serious head injuries). Apparently her patients couldn't remember the 10-20 seconds leading up to their accident because the conversion of short-term--->long term memory of that moment was interrupted.
But it's also a very inconvenient excuse if he messed up.

Yet somehow I had managed, without automated safety controls, to maintain the speed of the vehicle at a close approximation to the posted limit.

Unions are notorious for opposing automation (even protective automation) that takes the actions that are being taken in the first place by a Union employee. They see such systems as the first step to complete replacement of the Union member with Automation. If there was protective automation available but not in use.....look to the Unions as to why it wasn't in use.

We had an ugly Metrolink train derailment out here in Commiefornia, obviously down to excessive speed, where the operator also initially tried to play the amnesia card. (I suspect the union lawyers coach them in this.)
Turns out the guy had been texting on his phone instead of monitoring his speed. Texting to an underage kid in whom said operator displayed an unusual level of interest.

Later, we looked at a system to interface the RFID tags on individual tank cars to provide the identification to adjust specific train units to changes in the manifest. An example would be that a freight train coming from the west coast stops and picks up oil tank cars in the Midwest. Due to new restrictions, the train would be limited on speed and certain routes with the addition of these cars. The overall system would recognize that and send the limiting info back to the engine.
Of course, what would take weeks in the private sector takes decades dealing with the government.

And the reason the limits are low is neighbors and noise complaints I think not necessarily the ability of the tracks / trains to go faster.

I don't know. I have some friends who had a lovely trip on Amtrak from Chicago to Dallas. It only took around 24 hours with all the delays and breakdowns. And they ran out of food on the train.

And NTSB accident reports are not admissible as evidence. The reason is to encourage people to tell the truth to the NTSB so that remedial steps can be taken without witnesses fearing that their testimony will lead to criminal charges or civil liability.
If charges are to be brought or civil penalties sought then they have to be done without the help of the NTSB.

Having been on the eeevviiilll plaintiff's side of personal injury, I can tell you that the people who were in the accident have no freaking idea what happened. No one is lying about it, they just don't remember. Which means what they do "remember" usually isn't what happened.
This is where you explain to clients that the other guy isn't lying, s/he just doesn't remember it they way the client does. Mind you, sometimes everyone is completely and totally lying about everything. But oftentimes it's merely a matter of people "remembering" things that never happened.

Just like a car, when you hit the brakes in a turn the center of gravity shifts forward, which would give more force on the front wheel set and less on the back. This could cause the rear wheels to jump the track and pull all the remaining cars along with it.
Better to not hit the brakes while in a turn.

News report said that Amtrak was losing money on almost all food they serve. A hamburger, which not even God knows why you would buy from Amtrak, costs around $9 on Amtrak but it costs Amtrak almost $16. This is not wagyu beef we are talking about.

Well some of that makes sense. Its not like they've got a big kitchen, or nice facilities, they have to pay for storage and everything is expensive on a train to run and keep, and they need to pay someone extra to prepare it, etc. Its like food on planes, its just spendy to supply and prep it, more so than a restaurant.
But I doubt it adds up that much. Probably some regulations or someone's pocket getting padded. Contracts with a congressman's buddy or something.

You don't need GPS. It's on tracks. It can't get "lost", and there are no steering decisions to make. You could simply put a bar code scanner on the locomotive, set up to read bar codes on posts near the track, and adjust the speed accordingly. I could think of a dozen ways to do it that would involve neither GPS or the use of radio channels requiring FCC regulation.

Difference between trains and planes, trains do not have TSA check points. Not yet anyway. You can pick up whatever you want and take it on without having Olga the molester take it away from you at X-Ray.
I ride the Northeast route from time to time and grab stuff before I get on. I may be a beer guzzling, cigarette smoking madman but I'm not crazy enough to eat train food.

Dunno. We're not all libs here in the People's Republic of Massachusetts and they only deliberated 13 hours. To be on jury jurors had to say they'd be open to imposing the death penalty.
Only takes one juror to disagree, but I think if that was the case they would have deliberated longer.

But boy is it expensive. That's the major expense on trains that is hidden. Since it takes longer, you have to pack your own food or pay movie theater prices for your food. It used to be that the train was cheaper than flying, but barely by enough to make up for the food costs. I think the train is pretty close to flying now, and the only benefit is you don't have to take your shoes off and get groped by a sick puke wearing blue gloves.

It was an electric train, powered by overhead wires, so there was essentially an unlimited supply of power. Electric trolley buses have a way more acceleration than their Diesel counterparts for the same reason.

All modern trains are basically electric. The difference is where they get the power for the electric motors. On long distance freights they have a diesel engine that turns a generator that powers an electric motor. That way no gearing and more controllable.

Electric motors can accelerate pretty quickly, especially when they don't have too much inertia to overcome. The motors on the train are designed to overcome the inertia of tons of railroad cars at a dead stop and get them moving. Once they are already going at 70 mph, it does not take that much to get them going even faster. Especially, as was pointed out, when you have the electric generating capacity of the eastern United States to draw on.
Although I have never ridden in one, I am told that Tesla cars can accelerate really quickly which is disconcerting because they are also really quiet.

I don't know. I assume that's the point of it. I assume the response time would be in milliseconds. In other words, I push the accelerator thingy, the system goes nope nope and the acceleration never happens.

They should not have to switch locomotives. The thing that moves the train are big electric motors on each of the axles. What the diesel motor does is spin a generator which produces electricity to run the electric motors. When there are catenary wires over head, the diesel engine can be switched off and the electric power from the wire can be used to run the electric motors on the axles.
By the way, one of the things that puzzles me about the trains that carry shipping containers from the Port of Long Beach up over the mountains and to the rest of America is why they do not have catenary wires running through the LA basin. I mean they are so paranoid about air pollution there and it would also save significant bucks to not run the diesel engine for the first 80 to 100 miles.

Yes, electric engines speed up very fast. However, electric engines pulling thousands of tons cannot violate physics. It takes time. You're not going to speed up like a Lambourghini or something.

Amtrak uses diesel electric locomotives like freight trains do. The TGV in France uses the type of set up that you are talking about. They use a truck that is shared by two cars and the wheels on the truck have an electric motor on each axle. That means that both acceleration and regenerative braking are applied evenly along the length of the train.

I have been to a number of job sites where I had to watch the confined spaces safety video before I was allowed in. The actors in the video (I hope it was actors and not an industrial snuff film) step into the confined space full of nitrogen and just collapse into unconciousness. I do not know why they would have confined spaces filled with nitrogen but I assume that it is enough of a problem that they make everybody watch the film.

Well, if the ABS is working, that won't happen. ABS releases the brakes for a fraction of a second, repeatedly, to prevent the wheels from locking and breaking traction. And if the ABS isn't working, I'd sooner flat-spot 4 tires in a parking lot to find out, than find out the hard way.

The never installed even the ATC on the south side because the turn is so close to the Philly station that they thought it wasn't necessary as train could not accelerate fast enough.

Memory is like a two step process: imagine a road crew laying fresh asphalt on your street.
