Byron York: When ABC News Hired George Stephanopolous in 1996, It Promised He Would be an "Analyst Like William Kristol," Not Reporting Any News.
Within A Couple of Years They Were Reneging

The liars began assigning him to cover political stories-- about Democrats, about Republicans -- almost before the ink on their initial promise was dry.

They then changed their promise to "we won't have him working as the beat (day to day) reporter on any particular campaign."

But they still had him covering major political stories -- just not the day to day stuff.

And, when you think about it: A partisan's ability to maximize impact comes from being assigned as a general reporter, reporting on all the big, hot stories, rather than spending much of his time pinned down doing day-to-day routine reporting.

In short order, even those weak restrictions on Stephanopoulos' role would fall away and he would be covering all sorts of politics for ABC. By 2002, Stephanopoulos was host of "This Week," occupying David Brinkley's old chair. A couple of years after that, he was named ABC's "chief Washington correspondent."

Although conservatives would occasionally complain -- as when Stephanopoulos grilled Mitt Romney at length on the out-of-the-blue topic of birth control at a 2012 presidential debate -- Stephanopoulos seemed to have put the suspicions of partisanship behind him.

Now comes word that even as he interrogated Clinton Cash author Peter Schweizer, and in effect served as a defense lawyer for the Clinton Foundation, he was not disclosing his own $50,000 contribution to the organization. It was a performance that seemed right out of Stephanopoulos' War Room days; some habits of mind, apparently, never go away.

ABC repeatedly promised to keep the highly partisan Stephanopolous out of political reporting -- and broke that promise every chance they got.

7 Liars! Liars! Liars! Wheee!

Even Fox doesn't seriously do the job that an actual *competitor* might do - uncover the stories spiked, the lies told, and the distortions trafficked by the MFM.

Heck, they hire from the same pools and go to the same parties, why would they?

Only a few tiny outfits do a small part of the job - mainly blogs with little market.

Most people really do live in Fake-O World.

after all, its ABC's decision to let him work as a reporter

why should they trust the editorial hand at ABC

126 "ABC repeatedly promised to keep the highly partisan Stephanopolous out of political reporting -- and broke that promise every chance they got."

Let's remember here also Charlie Gibson of ABC and his "interview" with Sarah Palin, in which he peremptorily asked her a question about the Bush Doctrine, and then contemptuously rubbished her for not giving what Gibson would deem a satisfactory answer.

After which, Charles Krauthammer, who first defined and popularized the term "Bush Doctrine", opined that Palin's answer had been perfectly satisfactory.

It's not just George Snuffleupagus. It's pretty much all of the rest of ABC, and by extension, it's also pretty much all of the rest of the alphabet networks' "news divisions" which are infected with this crap.

Obviously everybody here already supports Ace and other sites.

DailySignal (Heritage's site) has beat reporters.
To varying degrees, Blaze, Breitbart, DCaller, WashExaminer, WashTimes, etc have them, too.

FoxNews is a cash gusher and doesn't need our support. I had hoped Blaze would rise to challenge them and not just be a Beck show 24/7. Probably not gonna happen.

There's no perfect solution. And it won't happen quick.

They need to learn how to do it in order to grasp the why.

You start with a simple method that works and is easy to do. Once they know how to generate the correct result, then you start helping the student to understand why it works that way.

Smart students will be able to grasp this, and come up with shortcuts based on what they figures out.

Common Core starts with the short-cuts and give a few examples without really explaining the broader mechanism.

For example, they take 6 + 9 and then change it to 5 + (1 + 9), and then 5 + 10.

That makes sense to us because we already grok the mathmatics. But for a student who doesn't, the teacher never explains why they "decompose" 6 into a 5 and a 1... the student is wondering how the teacher know how to "decompose 6 into those two specific numbers.

I actually taught myself trig.

The idjit school district put me in 7th grade math during 7th grade. Easy A.

I took 8th grade math that summer and then Algebra during 8th grade. The teacher was a b***h who objectively had it out for me. I went to sign up for an algebra class at the local community college, and it turned out that I fully knew algebra and the teach was purposefully giving me a bad grade.

Took algebra II before entering high school.

Tool honors geometry during 9th grade, pre-calc during 10th grade, and then two years of calculus culminating in getting an easy 5 on the AP test. Heck, I already know most of the material in the math classes I took during college.

Here in Commiefornia, there has been a long string of otherwise easily preventable train crashes, because the unions insist that the train controls come with a fully manual mode.

Then the unionized train operators keep switching into full manual and then falling asleep, or having heart attacks, or sending texts to their underaged paramours, and the entirely predictable crash follows as surely as day follows night.

279 "I thought the guy driving the train was the speed control."

The other day in the car I briefly tuned in NPR, where they were blaming the disaster on evil Republicans failing to allow saintly Democrats to "invest" public money in advanced automated safety controls that would prevent things like, well, a train being driven at 107 MPH into a max 50 MPH curve.

I looked up and I realized that I was in a 50 zone.

Holy sheepshit! And I had no advanced automated safety controls to protect my life and the lives of others! Fortunately by pure blind chance I happened to be going 52. But there's NO WAY that I could ever have managed that other than by pure blind chance, you can be sure.

362 Big wreck here in Peon country this afternoon, and it could have been me, but I got out of the way. I'm on my way to town about 5:30 PM, local time, and I'm no more than half a mile into the trip on the gravel grid road, when I see an older Dodge pickup come over the crest of the hill towards me, about a quarter mile ahead. He's really moving fast, and right smack down the middle of the road. I slowed down, and moved over as far to the right as I thought safe to do, and the driver of the Dodge, to his credit, also swerved a bit to his right, and missed my rig by several yards, fortunately. But I think that's when he lost it. As I watched in my rear-view mirror, I saw the Dodge fishtail from one shoulder to the other, twice, then it got right sideways, and hit the ditch on the south side of the road, and over it went. All accompanied by a huge cloud of dust, of course.

I thought I recognized the truck as one belonging to my nearest neighbor, and often driven by his young son, so I thought, "Holy shit, young N---- has just rolled his truck!" I threw my Suburban into reverse, and backed about a quarter mile to the site of the wreck, fearing the worst. I came abreast of the wreck, stopped the 'burb, and turned on the 4-ways. Got out of the truck, and went down into the ditch, and got on my knees next to the overturned Dodge. The rear wheels were still spinning merrily away, although the engine had quit. Looking through the passenger-side window glass, I saw a leg and a foot in a boot, and the leg was moving. Couldn't see the guy's face or upper body at all. The cab was crushed right down to the window sill on the driver's side. Still thinking it was the neighbor kid, I hollered, "N---- are you all right?" The occupant replied, "I'm OK, but I'm stuck in here. My other foot's caught up in the steering wheel. I said, "If you're OK, just hang on, I'll call your Dad, and we'll get a chain and right the truck and get you out of there." But I couldn't get service on my cell phone. Dead spot, out of sight of the tower. So I said, "just hang tough, I'll go get him, It's only 2 minutes away." As I climbed back up out of the ditch, a small car pulled up, driven by a young guy about 20. Still thinking it was N---- in the wreck, because he hadn't corrected me, I told the driver of the car who would have been one of his school buddies, "N---- has rolled his truck. He's OK, but he's stuck in there. Cell doesn't work, so I'm going to fetch his Dad, You wait there with him, please." Then I took off. I get to his folks' place, and said, "N---- just rolled his Dodge truck down on the township road." His Dad says, "But his truck is here in the yard. Sure enough, it was. Kid was out, alright, but driving his old Caddie. Anyway, me and the neighbor grab a tow strap from another truck in my yard, and head back down to the wreck site. While I was driving, neighbor was putting in a call to 9-1-1. We get there, no more than 5 minutes had passed, and there's nobody there. Driver had managed to get out, and had apparently been driven away by the guy in the car.

By then the fire department had shown up, and the RCMP, and it was quite a scene. As an eyewitness to the wreck, I had to give a statement. As all this is going on, N---- pulls up in his Caddie, and says, "Damn, which of you guys rolled my truck into the ditch?" The resemblance between the two trucks is uncanny. We now know who the wreck belongs to, and he had been in the bar most of the afternoon. Guy has had more than one prior drunk-driving conviction. I saw no evidence of booze when I spoke to the driver at the wreck site, and I never even saw his face, so if it ever goes to court I cannot say that I know who was driving, other than I misidentified him for somebody else. I have no reason to try to keep the assclown out of jail, because he very easily could have killed me if he had zigged instead of zagged on the road when we met. But neither am I going to lie to put his ass in jail.

Posted by: eleven at May 14, 2015 10:29 PM

Yeah, Airport is an odd one, though. It set the pattern for 70's disaster flicks ... big name cast and whatnot, but, not much actually happens. There';s only a body count of what? 2 people? And they land the plane safely. A case can be made for "Krakatoa East of Java" having set the trend. Not quite the hit or the cast list, though it is in the big names zone... but, it really showed the way for chessy 70's disaster epics.

Having not read earlier critiques of this particular portion of the Headline, I'm quite sure that this has been addressed.

Now I "Get It".

ABC promised "an opinion writer", then folded the partisan jackass amongst the "straight news".

I suppose following in A.P.'s footsteps seems "a good deal" to the uninitiated.

I guess I'll get used to "conservative" commentary from Bill O'Reilly while I'm at it.

Perhaps I should just present my balls for One Overton Window's "Initiation".

After said 'initiation', I can then carry about my mattress with something that resembles 'pride'!

Truck is a Diesel, if I remember right. Seen it parked behind the bar in town often enough. Had there been a fire, I guess I would have made more of an effort to rescue the driver. Smashed out the passenger window with a hammer; I could have done that. I was so convinced that it was the neighbor kid, who I would expect to meet on that road, that I figured his Dad was the best and closest source of help. And the guy never corrected me on my calling him "N----". And he never saw my face, nor I his. That cab was some squashed. Good thing there was no water in the ditch. None at all.
