12 Why Is WaPo's Philip Bump Lying To Readers About Amtrak?

Every time I see that TV commercial with the woman at work watching her kids come in the door from school on her computer and saying how she loves her spycam because it "keeps her in control of her children," I curse my parents. Who in the hell did my parents think they were, both working full-time jobs and leaving the 4 of us as latchkey kids?

Why, sometimes we even had to fix our own dinner. And once I started driving, I even had to, get this...take my siblings out to eat. The freakin' nerve of my parents!

And look what it did to us. Look how we turned out.

My sister has a PhD, for God's sakes. My middle brother only has TWO lousy masters degrees.

And my poor youngest brother only has, I am so ashamed to admit this, only one Masters Degree.

For shame, mom and dad. For. Shame.

17 Open carry, that's fine in OH. When I first moved here SC was an open carry State. (meaning you could carry it in your glove box or on the seat visible. They passed a concealed carry law but in with that they made open carry illegal. You can however still carry one in the glove box without a permit.

You all do realize that in the WP open carry article, it could be claimed that not only did the guy openly carrying was not breaking the law, specifically not the "causing panic" law, but the motorist who made the false call out of spite and revenge could be said to have made a violation under that same statute.

Oh, well.

27 If you've ever seen some older firefighters, you'll laugh about all the fuss about this fitness test.

I'm not for AA or lowering standards to do it but how many of the older Fire Fighters could do that stuff today? And if they're going out on fires then they should be able to do it too.

Are they retested? I think they have to pass a physical but do they have to pass a fitness test?

I'm guessing; NO.

28 I saw a Twitter conversation yesterday where some north easterner commuters were complaining about the funding for Amtrak. These guys (you could tell from the conversation) were heeled enough to be making these long daily commutes, but they thought of themselves as entitled to be subsidized by taxpayers from the rest of the country.

These were (most likely) upper middle-class, at least, workers who were exactly like the lower class people who not only expect, but demand, a hand out.

The problems we have in this country with this entitlement mentality, are much bigger than I had thought. The tendrils of social dependency fostered by our government are much more extensive, I think, than most of of realize.

This is some insidious shit.

Like so many others, Krauthammer gets most upset when the Mocha Messiah dumps on GOPes, not when he pinches a loaf on the Constitution. In that respect, he's pretty much the same as the rest of the eunuchs among the Konservative Kommentators.

33 According to Vaticanist Sandro Magister, Pope Francis has decided to postpone the publication of his long-awaited encyclical on the environment. The reason, according to Magister, is that the Pope realized that the document in its current state had no chance of receiving the approval of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith under the leadership of Cardinal Gerhard Muller.

35 The bottom line on this Amtrak shit is that Amtrak should be profitable and not subsidized at at all, but that doesn't even enter the conversation.

The only conversation that is taking place at all is about to what extent is NEEDS to be subsidized.

Within that mindset is where the crux of the problem lies.

Posted by: LoneStarHeeb at May 14, 2015 09:16 AM (BZAd3)

36 >>Free range parenting. The problem is lawyers.

I'd also blame the increase in households where two parents work. This has led to more micro-management of kids' time outside of school, reducing the amount of time kids jus hang out w/friends in the neighborhood, bouncing between houses, etc. It's a lot easier to wander the neighborhood when you had the safety net of your mom, and all your neighborhood friend's moms being present - an unofficial neighborhood watch.

50 The lowering of physical standards is just a continuance of the lowering of overall standards.

I'm not sure how well known this is, so it might be totally common knowledge, but just in case I'll say it anyway.

Becoming a firefighter is fairly difficult because you don't just have to pass the test, you have to pass in the top few slots.I don't know if this is across the board, but in some dpts former military guys are given a few extra point, so if you've got 10 "A" scores, and 4 of those guys are ex-military, they're going to become A+ scores.

Since they only take a few new recruits at a time, to make sure you get a slot you basically need a perfect score in some departments.

Anyway, the point is that just "passing" the test means absolutely nothing. If you get a 75, you ain't becoming a firefigher.

Well, a number of years ago some black men sued the Miami Dade (I believe) fire dpt because they "passed the test" but weren't hired.

They kept crying to the media "We passed the test!" Well, yeah, you got 72s. There are 100 men who scored higher than you, including, I'm sure tons of ex military guys who not only scored higher than you, but also got their bonus points.

They cried and cried, and eventually the city relented and accepted them into the fire training program, I think because they were forced to by law.

Well the trouble is that "passing" that first test is just the first step to becoming a firefighter. You have to pass an actual fire exam at the end. Not one of of those men passed.

Que the cries of racism, again. So the city hired tutors to try to get them to pass. They still didn't pass. Eventually they all flamed out (sorry, sorry) and poor Miami was left seething and out all the resources they were forced to devote to some guys who never should have been in the program to begin with.

But...they "passed the test!"

Now imagine this with the physical test, and just think of the fun we'll see.

53 This Show Should Have Ended A Decade Ago

I can tell you exactly when I stopped watching. It was, I think, one of the first times Kang and Kodos appeared on the Halloween special. They threatened to kill all of the country's politicians, to which Homer snidely responded, "Oh, you couldn't kill all of them" and the aliens said, "Just watch us!"

Off they flew. And just before they were out of sight, in a line obviously pasted in post-production, Lisa yelled, "Don't forget Newt Gingrich!"

Haven't watched since.

Posted by: Lauren at May 14, 2015 09:25 AM (MYCIw)

58 I think the only way to settle the debate problem is to add another round of playoffs. Maybe have a play-in round, where you take people nobody has heard of, like Fiorina and Jindahl, who have to go head to head, so we can see who emerges from that. Then seeding would clearly be involved.

Would Jeb be a #1? Cruz? If so, you can't put them in the same bracket. Or maybe give them a first round bye?

I don't know. It's all so complicated. Is Draftkings going to have one-day debate games?

Its been 20 years since regular middle class joes and janes could afford to take Amtrak between NYC, Philly and DC.* Those trains overwhelmingly cater to government and corporate types, all traveling on expense account. If the fares doubled tomorrow, to make up for a much hoped for reduction in government funding, the same people would continue buying and expensing the tickets. So fck them sideways.

While we had our fine volunteer guys fighting in wars, Simpsons had a scene where military recruiters at the mall can't convince some punks to join up. One of the recruiters remarks something like, "We can't even get the dumbest kids from the dumbest town to sign up!"

Turned it off. Never watched again.

Shearer was the instigator of the first Simpsons VA strike, so more of the same really. He's talented, and has done some great work on the show and elsewhere, but has a giant chip on his shoulder. Must be hell to work with.

Look, I don't even mind the "Strong female lead." I thought BtVS was great. I liked the Hunger Games and Catching Fire (Mocking Jay- both as a book and the movie, is much weaker). I like the Mercy Thompson novels. Okay, fine.

But Mad Max is supposed to be by guys for guys. It's supposed to have sooped-up cars, hawt chicks in scanty clothing, explosions, and people dying. And Mad Max is supposed to (to borrow a phrase from AtC) "Kill the f*ck out of absolutely everyone."

Not up to Amtrak to install. (except in locations where they may own the right of way)

Whoever owns the rails does the maintenance.

The Feds make recommendations and rules but the owners of the rails are the ones to implement them.

it's possible that Philly owns the right of way which is why Nutsack pushed off on a question about that system the other day.

This too may be laid at the feet of parsimonious Democrats. (parsimonious when it comes to infrastructure cause bridges and highways don't vote.)

One of the biggest appeals of the whole previous Mad Max series, was-

the stripped down, action oriented nature of the scripts and movies.

Juuuuust enough dialogue to keep us oriented and no more.

Rewatch "The Road Warrior". How much dialogue was in that movie?

10 minutes max (heh!)?

With the addition of the "Vag Mono" hag's input-

that means lots talky-whiny-talky-whiny-talkiness

where Furiosa stands and yammers on for minutes on end about fymynysm and her motivations and zzzzzz.

I hope not but Vag Mono hag's involvement points to that.

He wrote an article about Philip Bump, a Washington Post reporter, and how wrong the article Bump wrote about Amtrak was.

Davis gave the facts as to why Bump was wrong, but he didn't dwell on arguing about Amtrak. He focused on what a biased, misinformed, lying piece of shit Philip Bump is.

Other conservative writers need to learn from this and use the style.

Fight the urge to argue the point of whatever the discussion is and focus like a laser on the leftist in the media who is lying/stupid. In the long run, ruining some of these people through humiliation will do more to scare off others or change their writing than any other method.

On Levin? I heard some of that. The tracks swinging out, that must've been a sight, 50mph bend taking 100mph train.

Automated slow-down system described was in the NY subway system. If I got it right, something like this is being installed on major rails, but was not yet installed in the crash area.

Regardless, I presume that trains have been taking bends like that, regularly, for ages, at proper speeds, without incident, since the wild west days of rails. Suggests to me the problem is operator error. Duh.

Oakland has been criticized for the disproportionate suspensions, leading to an investigation by the U.S. Department of Educations Office of Civil Rights and a 2012 voluntary agreement that required the district to employ a range of practices that reduced suspensions.

Willful defiance suspensions for African American students in Oakland declined from 1,050 incidents in 2011 to 630 in 2014, according to district officials. That number is expected to drop significantly this school year as well.

In Mad Max there wasn't a lot (though there was some, certainly). In Road Warrior there was a fair deal, actually- just not necessarily all that attractive (I'm not really a fan of the bondage-gear look).

Thunderdome, though, had some nice scenery.

157 The FDNY just graduated a woman who could not complete their final physical test. But her grades were above average.

A co-worker in my office is going to the FDNY academy for either their June class or December class (depends on how everyone else does on entrance physical). For FDNY the entrance test is about the easiest physical test you take while there, the tests get increasingly difficult as you progress through the academy - you carry more weight, less time, need to use only the air in your tank.

Not homo. Freelancers.

In "The Road Warrior", the same gang raped some big chested gal that Max saw through a telescope.

By, the way that was the only bit of nekkidness in the whole series.

But, I guess the whole rape/kill thing eventually leads to homo gangs.

166 >>Please tell me that the "Die Hard" movies are still pure.

SOrt of. The 5th one that came out in 2013 had John McClane go to Russia to rescue his son, whom he thought had gone off the rails and gotten arrested. Instead, he was an undercover CIA (?) agent and the bicker a bot before joining forces. It was fine, but not really a Die Hard movie.

172 Seasons 3-8 of The Simpsons was simply brilliant. But then the rot started setting in, as it often does on long-running shows.

Did you ever notice that Lisa, the biggest liberal on the show, was also the most insufferable? She was the stereotypical liberal: arrogant, whiny, unhappy, angry and constantly lecturing everyone around her about how stupid and wrong THEY were.

173 "... I presume that trains have been taking bends like that, regularly, for ages..."

According to the reporting, this Amtrak train was limited to 50 mph. Another express train that uses the same track can go through at 70 mph.

If a train can do a regular run at 70, it sure seems possible that this train could take the turn at 100 or 106. The engineer hit the emergency brake at the last minute. Just as in your car, if you hit the brakes hard just as you enter a turn, you're going to spin out.

It's possible that if the engineer had just slept through the turn, everything would have been alright.

175 Regardless, I presume that trains have been taking bends like that,
regularly, for ages, at proper speeds, without incident, since the wild
west days of rails. Suggests to me the problem is operator error. Duh.

You may be right but it seems odd that the guy put pedal to metal out of the gates and forgot that in 10 or so minutes he has to cut it back to 50. They make 100 mph sound ridiculously fast but the guys on last night said it's not unusual to go over 100 mph on other parts of the line. If you're right that dude is one dumb fcuker.

180 Wow- at first I thought the phrase "Bumo is lying" must be hyperbole; you know, like a political statement loosely based on facts whose headline expressed personal point of view.

It's not. Its straight up factual, and Bump had the chance to edit his way out of the problem but chose instead to double down and lie harder.

I wonder why an ostensibly libertarian owner tolerates this kind of crappy Government-Sugar advocacy?
