Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, May 14, 2015. On this day in 1787 delegates convened a Constitutional Convention. The delegates had been sent to change the Articles of Confederation not write a new one. The perception at the time was the articles simply did not have sufficient strength to work. Now since the all encompassing 14th amendment with the aid of the Supreme Court that was empowered by Adams who always wanted a central government but was stymied at the convention it has become too powerful.

Federal investigators say the AMTRAK train that derailed after leaving Philly was going 106 mph when it entered the curve with a 50 mph speed limit. That seems awful fast for 11 minutes after leaving the station.

The SS is finally admitted the two agents who drove up to the WH while they were securing a "suspicious" package were, in fact, drunk. Investigation showed that they had ran up a considerable bar tab. No word of ANY disciplinary action for the agents but everybody else was fired. They both have been placed on administrative leave and one has announced he will retire.

Born That Way?
It has been well declared by the Left that if one is "trans" then they are "born that way" while at the same time they declare that "gender is a social construct." Just as with whether one is straight or a non-oppressor has a double standard where gay considered normal, while straight is considered an aberration to be abandoned, a child whose parents declare that their special little snowflake is "trans" means that that child was "born that way," a child who grows up normally is considered an aberration to be forced to choose a more politically correct "gender identity"... I like "Danger Lights" (1930), an early wide-screen extravaganza with a lot of top stars of the time, and the immortal line "What would Dan Thorn do?" Not really. The NE Corridor makes a profit if you exclude capital costs and overhead. The real world, however, includes capital costs and overhead. Only if you exclude some costs. Look at it this way - if you eliminated all the other routes and Amtrak was only the NE Corridor, it would still lose a shitload of money. The costs of running Amtrak itself don't just magically go away because they aren't route-specific. Posted by: Andy at May 14, 2015 07:12 AM (ADkUh) 102

I don't understand why the push for gays to be able to donate blood.
They're champing at the bit to give blood. The only thing I can see is that they perceive it as a slur against gays and a "denial" of them being accepted as the rest of us would be. Oh. Wait. Normal people who have certain diseases or who participate or have participated in certain hazardous activities or visited known places where infections can be picked up are also denied the "right" to give blood. They're are hundreds of HIV sufferers who were infected by blood transfusion in the early days of AIDS and now they want to reverse that. For What? What gain does society acquire by doing this? The unfortunate thing is that this decision will be made by some faceless and unaccounted bureaucrat somewhere who will most likely never be the recipient of a "infected" donor. I always use the rearward facing seats. Never heard of many trains getting hit at speed from the rear. It's mostly derails. That's because their are fewer trains these days so less chance of traffic scheduling screwups. Plus there are safeguards in place to prevent most collisions. (outside of municipal maintained track that is. if Amtrak uses city track then you may have a problem) And btw SOONA gave me static the other day when I was explaining how engineers get hypnotized by the rail and he was yammering on about the safeguards in place to stop them from speeding. But they aren't in effect around philly and other environs. Because money and stuff. Well actually cause the controlling entities (some of whom are municipalities. See above) have held up the implementation because they don't want to spend the money. Ol' Nutsack slipped that question yesterday for that very reason. He doesn't want a discussion about why the tracks around Philly don't have those safety devices. See it's the owners of the right of ways that own the rails and they have to do the maintenance. The Feds don't maintain sh!t. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at May 14, 2015 07:33 AM (zRby/) 148

part of the reason trains don't make money is the car.
Distances of 60 miles or more are not a hardship. And there are few trains and only between large pop. centers. Plus no cheap parking if you use the train so it's a hassle getting to one in many places. Some form of rail travel could be made to be profitable but first they'd have to take the unions out of the equation and the Federal government regulations. Unions, the high way system and the car killed the train. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at May 14, 2015 07:45 AM (zRby/) 164

Saw Chris Cuomo on CNN a few minutes back. I think the pushback really got under his skin. He was interviewing some transportation authority and the interview went pretty much like this.
Cuomo: So, we're told speed was a factor, but you can't discount that infrastructure spending was cut and that contributed to the disaster, right? NTSB Dudette: In this case, excessive speed was the cause of the accident. Cuomo: But if the infrastructure had been upgraded, it could have prevented the wreck, right? NTSB Dudette: Well, if the train had been equipped with speed controls, but there's no guarantee that could have been accomplished even with more spending. Cuomo: You know, I was attacked by right-wingers yesterday for saying this was about infrastructure spending, but I was basically right wasn't I? NTSB Dudette: It's really a separate issue. Cuomo: Did I mention right-wingers attacked me because I said we needed to spend more on infrastructure? They turned the tragedy into a political football. I was under the impression it was an express and did not stop there at that time. Very unlikely it could get up to 107 mph in the distance from a standing start. And btw, where was the conductor during all this? (he/she btw is the one actually in charge of the train) They didn't see that they were doing 100 mph just outside of Philly? I think I would've noticed something like that. I I was asked by my kids what the difference is between a conductor and an engineer, but I didn't know. What is the difference? The best thing that happened to trains was the container.
A Standardized container. (in various sizes but conforming to a uniform stackability) It also helped take away the lower level blue collar jobs that Americans used to have but Hey; win some lose some. From Hong Kong to your door with no Union Longshoreman/stevedore breaking bulk and stealing stuff. (some still goes on but it's a lot more difficult now.) Manu. -> truck -> train -> ship-> train -> truck -> you And the stuff never leaves the container till you get it. (customs may stick their nose in on occasion.) Yesterday we went to West Point Posted by: Nevergiveup at May 14, 2015 07:00 AM (/tNwW) Isn't West Point all beautiful wth the grey stone buildings and the view of the Hudson River? Now imagine that same spot only in January with grey skies, temps in the single digits, snow about a foot deep on the ground, and the wind blowing about 47 mph directly out of the north and being funneled directly from the north across the site by the Hudson River Valley. The thing about railway subsidies that aggravates the crap out of me is their justification. In the past the government said they were justified because the government forced them to service low passenger rate areas at a loss. That is no longer the case and subsidies were supposed to be phased out years ago. They have not been phased out. So basically what we are doing is subsidizing unions and that is why you see Democrats screaming for more and more money.

And the stuff never leaves the container till you get it. (customs may stick their nose in on occasion.)
Generally only if the USDA/APHIS is looking for bugs (a "tailgate inspection."). Most of the inspections nowadays are done using the VACIS system, basically an x-ray. Then if they see something suspicious, they'll open the container. And they run 'em through radiation detectors. I remember in the days immediately following 9/11, I worked right in a port at the time, the National Guard was there with portable versions of all this, the VACIS and rad detectors. I was glad to have them there. Those fine young men and women of the Nat'l Guard really helped put our minds at considerable ease in those scary days when we didn't know if we were going to get hit with a containerized dirty bomb. He put that throttle to the wall coming out of the station.
I would've thought there would be governors on that. He's being smart though. It's common for accident victims to have amnesia after an accident. (legitimately researched and proven to happen) By saying this and sticking to the story, he avoids lying about what he did. Re: Amtrak subsidies. The fact is that the government indirectly subsidizes all forms of transportation. If you own an airline, the government provides the airports and traffic controllers. If you own a trucking company or a long distance bus company, the government provides the roads. So there really isn't' anything unfair about government subsidies to railroads, provided of course that the subsidies are reasonable and not a slush fund.

Let me take a stab at the enlighten view of the big ten, in order. 1. Glowbull Worming has become a religion, with its own god. 2. Not so sure about that one. 3. It's OK to swear, if it's to support Social Justice 4. It's OK to work on the Sabbath, if it's to support a SJW embraced cause. 5. Call out your father and mother if they are rich, and fail to give all to the poor. 6. Late term abortion does not take a human life. 7. It's not really adultery if you genuinely love each other. 8. It's ok to take the fruits of another labors, and give those fruits to one who has not earned them. 9. It's OK to lie about rape, because it supports a greater truth. 10.
Your two examples pay specific excise taxes for the use of the facilities. Perhaps one could argue that their taxes are too low, but that's a different argument than just giving taxpayer money to a for-profit entity to pay operating expenses. Isn't AMTRAK also "subsidized" by the freight companies maintaining the trackage?

I think motorhead summed it up nice-
Iron child from a Vulcan's forge metal scream and thrash red steel in the driving wheel hear the pistons clash black dragon breathing big black smoke howling up the tracks I'm riding on the thunderchief spit in the devil's eye no force on earth can stop me now like to see'em try hey, hey, riding with the driver Juggernaut coming down the line hear the banshee cry engineer like to lose his mind glory in his eye too fast to live this way too young to die I'm riding on the thunderchief spit in the devil's eye no force on earth can stop me now like to see'em try hey, hey, riding with the driver Hold tight, feel the driver's bite hear the whistle moan engine rocking to the left and right vibrating in my bones once a locomotive steals your soul you got a casey jones I'm riding on the thunderchief spit in the devil's eye no force on earth can stop me now kiss your ass goodbye hey, hey, riding with the driver Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at May 14, 2015 09:38 AM (LWKgp) 362

AMTRAK is one, CSX is one, and there is one other freight company that I can't remember the name. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 14, 2015 09:49 AM (GpgJl) 363

Okay, but I'm thinking that even if they paid a "fair share" based on tonnage or something, it would be a tiny increment of maintenance costs. Certainly not enough to support the existence of the tracks. Whereas, the freight hauls could pay for the tracks whether AMTRAK existed or not. Posted by: Grump928(c) at May 14, 2015 09:58 AM (evdj2) 364
BTW, AMTRAK only owns one section of track and it is in the NE corridor. The rest of the country is owned and maintained by freight companies and a few regional rail services around cities. .

Big push is that some electronic system, not yet completely installed would have prevented the train derailment. So of course, it's evil Republicans murdering train passengers due to defunding. I wonder if doing the FCUKING SPEED LIMIT might not have reduced the likelihood of a derailment as well!! Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at May 14, 2015 07:19 AM (VPLuQ)" The electronic system keeps the train operating safely even if the train engineer is drunk, stoned, having an epileptic fit, getting a blow job, texting on his phone, looking at pornography, reading "War and Peace" or in any other way of ignoring his job. Of course, fully automated trains have been in operation for years delivering coal from coal mines to power plants and that would make engineers like the one who killed those people in Philadelphia redundant and that would make the unions sad.
