Andy I posted a link yesterday that showed how AMTRAK does make a profit in the NE corridor and other urban areas. The rural and transcontinental routes are what is causing them to lose money.
As far as track maintenance and overhead goes that is common shared between three different entities who share the tracks so the overhead is not as great as that article makes out.

Only if you exclude some costs. Look at it this way - if you eliminated all the other routes and Amtrak was only the NE Corridor, it would still lose a shitload of money. The costs of running Amtrak itself don't just magically go away because they aren't route-specific.

I always use the rearward facing seats.
Never heard of many trains getting hit at speed from the rear. It's mostly derails.
That's because their are fewer trains these days so less chance of traffic scheduling screwups. Plus there are safeguards in place to prevent most collisions. (outside of municipal maintained track that is. if Amtrak uses city track then you may have a problem)
And btw SOONA gave me static the other day when I was explaining how engineers get hypnotized by the rail and he was yammering on about the safeguards in place to stop them from speeding.
But they aren't in effect around philly and other environs. Because money and stuff. Well actually cause the controlling entities (some of whom are municipalities. See above) have held up the implementation because they don't want to spend the money. Ol' Nutsack slipped that question yesterday for that very reason. He doesn't want a discussion about why the tracks around Philly don't have those safety devices.
See it's the owners of the right of ways that own the rails and they have to do the maintenance. The Feds don't maintain sh!t.

The area I am in was once rated as the highest gas prices in the country. And I have no idea why that is. What I should have said after the 10 cents tax hike gas prices will increase by 15 cents a gallon or more and gas prices will be among the highest in the country. Because every time they jack up the taxes the venders use that as an excuse to increase the price per gallon even more.
My area is normally the highest in the State.

Dramatic as the train accident was, train travel is still much safer than air travel and orders of magnitude safer than automobiles.
Yesterday was dramatic, and tragic. But I would not even think twice about getting on a train, be it subway, commuter or the NE Corridor.

Distances of 60 miles or more are not a hardship.
And there are few trains and only between large pop. centers.
Plus no cheap parking if you use the train so it's a hassle getting to one in many places.
Some form of rail travel could be made to be profitable but first they'd have to take the unions out of the equation and the Federal government regulations.
Unions, the high way system and the car killed the train.

That is very annoying. My husband is retiring from the Navy and we are trying to decide if we should stay in SC. I can't believe the income taxes in this state. The low gas prices were one positive. We all know the increase won't go to fixing the roads even though many of them desperately need it.

SC income tax is high for the SE. So are property taxes in my area, for the SE. I could get about $1,000 a year decrease in taxes by moving back to GA in a similar area to where I am at now. Of course that would be eat up by the cost of the move.
And from what I understand if you live down there near Charleston taxes are even higher there.

Generally only if the USDA/APHIS is looking for bugs (a "tailgate inspection."). Most of the inspections nowadays are done using the VACIS system, basically an x-ray. Then if they see something suspicious, they'll open the container.
And they run 'em through radiation detectors.
I remember in the days immediately following 9/11, I worked right in a port at the time, the National Guard was there with portable versions of all this, the VACIS and rad detectors.
I was glad to have them there. Those fine young men and women of the Nat'l Guard really helped put our minds at considerable ease in those scary days when we didn't know if we were going to get hit with a containerized dirty bomb. Every day we left for work not sure we'd ever return. It was a very real fear at the time.

Used to drive through Portsmouth Va very early in the morning to get to my last ship, which was going through a reactor refueling and overhaul in drydock.

Very entertaining, and good for the long view; the Church has, throughout her history, been generally saddled with ineffective, malevolent, corrupt or imbecilic popes, and we remember the greats like Innocent III or JP2 simply because they stand out from the run of mediocities. Looks like we will get a whopping 10 cent a gallon tax hike on gasoline
here in SC. That means gas prices will go up by 15 cents a gallon
placing SC at the top end of gas taxers. Gasoline in my area is already
among the highest in the country. This will just make it worse.
Vic, the summer mixture turnover is making gas higher, but SC is still the lowest on the East Coast.

Your two examples pay specific excise taxes for the use of the facilities. Perhaps one could argue that their taxes are too low, but that's a different argument than just giving taxpayer money to a for-profit entity to pay operating expenses.

There are three major companies that maintain the tracks. AMTRAK is one, CSX is one, and there is one other freight company that I can't remember the name.

Okay, but I'm thinking that even if they paid a "fair share" based on tonnage or something, it would be a tiny increment of maintenance costs. Certainly not enough to support the existence of the tracks. Whereas, the freight hauls could pay for the tracks whether AMTRAK existed or not.

Big push is that some electronic system, not yet completely installed would have prevented the train derailment.
So of course, it's evil Republicans murdering train passengers due to defunding.
I wonder if doing the FCUKING SPEED LIMIT might not have reduced the likelihood of a derailment as well!!

The electronic system keeps the train operating safely even if the train engineer is drunk, stoned, having an epileptic fit, getting a blow job, texting on his phone, looking at pornography, reading "War and Peace" or in any other way of ignoring his job.
Of course, fully automated trains have been in operation for years delivering coal from coal mines to power plants and that would make engineers like the one who killed those people in Philadelphia redundant and that would make the unions sad.
