Quote of the Day

What we've learned so far: Women are too emotionally immature for college. They should be kept at home until a suitable man appears, ready to marry them and assume responsibility for overseeing their poor decision-making abilities.

-- Glenn Reynolds

My Name is 'Jack Barsky' and I Was a Deep Cover Spy in the US For the Soviet Union

Except that he decided he liked living in America and wanted to stay.

At the end of 1988, Jack Barsky's 10-year run as a clandestine KGB agent in the United States was about to come to an end. He had ignored Soviet warnings that his cover had been blown and decided to remain in America and not return to his native East Germany. He was taking a chance that no one in America would ever find out who he really was. And he was taking a bigger chance that the KGB wouldn't retaliate for disobeying an order. The urgency with which the Soviets seemed to view the situation became clear one morning in Queens.

Jack Barsky says he was on his way to work in December 1988, standing and waiting for an "A" train on this subway platform when a stranger paid him a visit.

Jack Barsky: There's this character in, in a black coat and he sidles up to me and he whispers in my ear, he says, "You gotta come home or else you're dead." And then he walked out.

Steve Kroft: Russian accent?

Jack Barsky: Yes.

Steve Kroft: That's an incentive.

Jack Barsky: It's an incentive to go.

Steve Kroft: I mean spies get killed all the time.

Jack Barsky: They do. But not me. The entire time I always had this childlike belief that everything would be all right.

Steve Kroft: So what are you going to tell the Russians?

Jack Barsky: Well, I (sighs) I sent them, this "Dear John" letter, the goodbye letter in which I stated that I had contracted AIDS and that the only way for me to get a treatment would be in the United States.

Steve Kroft: You just wrote them a letter and said, 'I can't come back. I've got AIDS"?

Jack Barsky: There's three things I tell people that the Russians were afraid of. AIDS, Jewish people and Ronald Reagan. And they were deathly...

Steve Kroft: In that order?

Jack Barsky: I think Ronald Reagan took the top spot. They thought he would push the button.

Texas Tech Dean of Students: Due Process has a "Chilling Effect" on Justice at College

Ashe Show: No such thing as evidence of innocence in campus sexual assault hearings

[Trigger Warning]

If a student has been wrongly accused of sexual assault on their college campus, how are they supposed to prove their innocence?

I've asked a similar question to lawmakers and interested parties before - how is a student supposed to prove they obtained consent in a he said, she said situation? - but received no response.

...A similar situation played out at Vassar College when Peter Yu introduced Facebook messages showing his accuser apologizing to him for the evening. She apologized for leading him on and said that she had "a wonderful time" with him. But a year later, when Yu produced these messages for the disciplinary panel, his accuser claimed they "did not correctly reflect her feelings" because she was in a state of "shock and disbelief" about the encounter.

Women in college today should be considered legally incompetent and simply unable to live and function as adults. A coed shouldn't be allowed to testify in court and any contracts she signs or consent she gives should be considered null and void since these may "not correctly reflect her feelings".

Helen Taussig: A Woman Who Did Not Need Trigger Warnings or Safe Spaces

She was severely dyslexic, years behind in school, and female. The professor of her class on histology (the study of the microscopic anatomy of cells and tissues of plants and animals) would not let her speak to the male students for fear of "contamination." Heck, neither Harvard Medical School nor Boston University would grant her a degree. But Helen Brooke Taussig was made of sterner stuff. She would persevere and change medicine for the better by performing open heart surgery that saved the blue babies. Later, she would lead the fight to ban Thalidomide, which was used for morning sickness, but created disastrous limb deformities in babies.

Helen Taussig came into the world on May 24, 1898, when American women could not vote. Her father was an economics professor at Harvard and her mother was one of the first students at Radcliffe College, a women's college. Helen Taussig's grandfather was a physician, which likely influenced her eventual decision to enter medicine.

Tuberculosis struck the family when she was 9, killing her mother and setting Taussig's education back a few years as she battled illness. But she attended Radcliffe for two years before graduating from the University of California, Berkeley in 1921. She was 23. While she took classes at Harvard, she could not get a degree there, She applied at Johns Hopkins, and was accepted. This was the beginning of a lifelong partnership that served her and the university well.
"In 1944 doctors at Johns Hopkins performed the surgery that opened the door to today's heart surgery. Working together, The Johns Hopkins Hospital's chief surgeon, Dr. Alfred Blalock, his technician Vivien Thomas, and pediatric cardiologist Dr. Helen Taussig devised a means for improving the flow of oxygen into the blood by connecting one of the heart's major arteries with another feeding into the lungs. Known as the Blue Baby Operation, it brought relief to a young girl plagued with a combination of heart defects that kept her blood so starved for oxygen that her skin was literally blue. In time the procedure not only helped save the lives of thousands of similarly afflicted children around the world, but also opened the door to now-familiar procedures like coronary bypass surgery," according to the university's official history.

...This knowledge of treating babies would be passed up to work on adults. Laymen would think it would work the other way around. What patience and skills these doctors had. Of course, doctors now use artificial tubing that is as small as 3 millimeters. But what wonderful work they pioneered.

Taussig also pioneered using X-rays and fluoroscopy to examine the working of a baby's heart. She overcame severe hearing problems later in life through lip reading.

Incredibly, she would not become a full professor until 1959 -- a dozen years after she published "Congenital Malformations of the Heart," a paper that was the genesis of considering pediatric cardiology an independent field.

Why Is That Traffic Cop's Finger in Your Butt?

Um those young ladies might be hiding something 'down there'. Better check it out. Oh the fat one? Eh she seems alright - let her go.

How often do Texas cops decide to perform body cavity searches on people they pull over for routine traffic offenses? More often than you might think. Looking for the case that gave rise to this bill, I immediately found three cases, all involving young women suspected of marijuana possession.

An Afternoon Shooting with NBC's Ronan Farrow

Once we had a little play time, Ronan asked me to teach him how to shoot some of the guns. Apparently he shot skeet and trap back in college, but handguns and rifles are a little different. I started him out on my Ruger 10/22 Takedown with an AAC Prodigy silencer, and he was nailing a little pepper popper we had set up with no problems.

...Then we moved on to the bigger stuff. Ronan wanted to try something with a scope, so I handed him my .300 AAC Blackout rifle, with attached Liberty Suppressors Mystic-X can. He absolutely loved it, from the recoil of the larger rounds to the reticle in the scope. What can I say.I build nice things.

The best part was that throughout the whole "let's teach the city boy to shoot" portion of the day, we didn't wear any hearing protection. All the guns were suppressed, and all the ammo was subsonic. Everyone was able to chat normally and in a relaxed tone. I think they finally understood the benefit of a silencer.

Rolling Stone asked Townshend: "While we're on the subject, when you look at ISIS and Boko Haram - and even what Putin has been up to, to some extent - do you worry about the state of the planet?"

Townshend responded by saying he hopes his answer does not earn him the label "neocon" again, by "Arianna Huffington. that dimwitted woman." He then said, "I do think it's very important that we keep our ammunition ready. I do feel there is nothing to worry about as long as we're willing to protect ourselves."

"Shock and disbelief" ? What's that mean? He was really lousy in the sack?

Seriously though, these university whackos need to all get together in some national convention and decide whether college age women are capable of functioning as responsible adults, or not. And if not, they should stay home with their mommies and daddies until they are ready to take responsibility for their own choices.

And I HATE actual rapists, but this crap of assuming that the woman is always right and the man is always wrong is an insult to women, who are perfectly capable of lying their asses off to get a guy in trouble. And women are perfectly capable of drinking a lot, screwing some random guy, then having buyers' remorse the next day. If university officials want to help them, they need to tell them to learn from their mistakes and not drink so damn much.

50 In case you are interested and missed it this morning. Advice for women, 1910.

More Practical Suggestions for Mother and Housewife, by Marion Mills Miller, Chp. 1.

To the unmarried woman, especially the one who may

subsequently marry, education in the broad sense of

self-culture and development is of primary importance. The

question of being should take precedence over doing, although

not to the exclusion of the latter, for character is best

formed by action. But all her studies, occupations, even her

pastimes, should be pursued with the main purpose of making

herself the ideal woman, such an one as Wordsworth describes,

one with:

"The reason firm, the temperate will,
Endurance, foresight, strength and skill;
A perfect Woman, nobly planned
To warn, to comfort, and command;
And yet a Spirit still, and bright
With something of angelic light."

It is an obviously true, and therefore a trite observation,

that no one, woman or man, should consider that education

(using the term broadly) stopped with graduation from school

or college. But the statement that a grown person who has not

settled down to some particular life work, such as is often

the case with a young unmarried woman, should continue at

least one serious study, will not be so generally

accepted or acceptable. Yet in no other way may that mental

discipline be obtained which is necessary to the mature

development of character. Neglect to cultivate the ability to

go down to the root of a subject, to observe it in its

relations, and to apply it practically, will inevitably lead

to superficial consideration of every subject, and even

ignorance of the fact that this is superficial consideration.

As a practical result, the person will drift through life

rudderless, the sport of circumstance. She will act by

impulse and chance, and be continually at a loss how to

correct her errors. The shallowness with which women as a

class are charged is due to the fact that, their aim in life

for a considerable period not having been fixed by marriage

or choice of a profession, they do not substitute some

definite interest for such remissness, and so form the habit

of intellectual laziness.

OMG.

My son just finished his Junior year at college, and talks about some of the crazy girls he knows that get ridiculously drunk. One is a borderline alcoholic, and her Dad is a cop. Go figger.
He was at a bar one night, and some girl from Florida visiting friends in town sat down next to him. They started drinking and talking, and she starts grabbing at him and coming on to him. He thinks it's funny, but really doesn't know what to make of it.
He goes home (dorm) to go to bed, and gets wakened up at 6:30 in the morning by the cops, because this girl came up missing, and her last text message on her phone was to him.
They found her later in the day in some hotel, sleeping off a hangover.

Some girls are just crazy stupid at that age.

I won't vote for Jeb either. That's the first time in 35 years that I have refused to vote for the GOP candidate. There's no real difference between him and Hillary. If he loses the nomination, I could actually see him crossing party lines to become Hillary's VP.

177 Helen Taussig was a genius, but she didn't do heart surgery. She collaborated with Blalock to develop the principles that allowed the Blalock-Taussig shunt to work. Babies who would have died from conditions that limited blood flow to the lungs were able to have a temporary source of pulmonary blood flow to provide oxygen. Although this did not cure or fix the underlying defect, it allowed survival to a bigger size and eventually led to the ability to actually fix previously lethal conditions. In fact, I saw two young adults just today who had BT shunts when they were babies.

We still use modified B-T shunts for certain situations.

God bless Helen Taussig. I wish I was half the doctor she was.

Well, as I keep saying: the party wasn't responsible for the (1860s) KKK, but the people were. The most conservative whites in the South joined the Conservative parties, which merged with the Democrats in some places and WAS the Democrats in others. Their children stayed with the Democrats.

The 1920s KKK was as much a Republican affair (outside the South) as a Democrat affair. Colorado had a whole Governor, Morely, who was a KKK honcho and a Republican.

Blacks know this. White Republicans today should at least know that blacks know this.

214 One good thing about all this rain? Texas' lakes sure needed the refill.

An empty Lake Travis has destroyed the boating industry there. And, "boating industry" means all of it. Bait camps. Marinas. Repair and service operations. Tackle shops. Ski equipment.

Normally, Lake Travis hosts a sizeable fleet of serious yachts. Nowdays? It's a Jet Ski pond.

All that doom and gloom aside, right now is a good time for a well focused, fiscally disciplined Capitalist Pig to invest heavily in the watersports world in Central Texas.

"Pent Up Demand", would be one hell of a good DBA to file with the State, as it perfectly describes the state of the inland, watersports market.

Guess it also describes the state of mind of certain Jr. High schoolmarms, but that's a different comment, entirely.

The KKK was explicitly founded to overthrow the Republican Party. As time went on, it found a home with the progressives of the day, especially in regards to eugenics.

These universities aren't doing them any favors by not telling them the truth about life. Being dead drunk around drunken guys is risky.

233 What we've learned so far: Women are too emotionally immature for college. They should be kept at home until a suitable man appears, ready to marry them and assume responsibility for overseeing their poor decision-making abilities.

Earlier tonight I was in Austin, or rather near Austin and ate with friends. The TV was on and the bif story was that a former city manager from Florida gave a sensitivity talk about how an all female city council was very different from a male one. Said that females want to know community impact rather than financial cost of issues. Said they were more emotional.

Outrage! The mostly female Austin city council had a presser where they were all very upset, hurt and angry about what message the video talk sent to the community and had it removed from the city website even though it cost a lot of money. There is talk that the male city manager may have to resign.
I'm glad I moved away.

Since disfranchisement of most African Americans and many poor whites around the start of the 20th century, the only political activity for whites took place within the Democratic Party."

The thing is, it really wasn't.

At all.

It was founded in response to the Reconstruction policy of the "radical" Republicans to keep republicans out of the south.

The racial stuff was not a driving force in the beginning. But they did want to disenfranchise blacks who voted Republican (they voted R back then like they vote D now).

They lynched a lot of us yankees, too.

Then, in the early 1900s, it was explicitly about race and eugenics and progressivism.

it was never "conservative" in any way we use that word today.

As far as conveniently leaving out statistics, well, if the Klan was so odious to Republicans in Colorado, how come Morely won?

But okay, whatevz. White conservatives have always had the best interests of blacks at heart, even when blacks don't agree and don't vote accordingly. It must be because blacks is ignint (It really is amazing that the party of the KKK and Jim Crow has managed to so completely pretend that we were the ones who did all the things that they actually did.) and corrupt (I guess free shit overcomes all.).

It can't be that blacks have racial interests that they perceive as different from whites'. It can't be that blacks have generational traditions of living alongside whites, and of how whites voted.

Blacks, to their credit, know who they are and know who WE are. More to their credit they are honest about it.

Again and again: in the 1860s, the KKK were the conservative force. The Democrats were the conservative force.

What do you MEAN by conservative?

I mean, I'm genuinely curious.

Maybe that's where the misunderstanding is coming from.

Because the biggest proponents of progressivism were southern whites and northern "elites" like Woodrow Wilson.

"conservative" democrats were in states like PA and NY, and were not majorities until way later.

The enemies of the KKK were the "radical republicans" who would today be called "TEA Party extremists" (not perfect analogy, but close) who pushed and passed the 13th and 14th amendments.

306 They call themselves "progressive" or "liberal" but they have the most
"regressive" policies ever. They believe in statism and essentially want
to go back to the times of the serfs (they, of course, being the land

I encounter that every so often. Most had a grandparent or two who went through Reconstruction after the Civil War and taught them to never, ever vote Republican.

I know a Lutheran pastor in his mid-eighties who is a committed pro-lifer and is as conservative as I am on most of the issues. Yet, he votes for Democrats in every single election because of the way Republicans treated his grandmother and her family during Reconstruction. Go figure.

Wow. Just wow.

So you deny that there was a concerted effort to obfuscate the left's history of racism?

It's just like the concerted effort to elevate FDR to sainthood. I would say it's amazing that he left has made so many people under 40 believe that FDR was the second coming of Jesus. That's not some secret coded racist dog whistle. Good lord.

It can't be that blacks have racial interests that they perceive as different from whites'. It can't be that blacks have generational traditions of living alongside whites, and of how whites voted.

311 Nerdygirl, I read an account by someone who went along on some sort of "high-end" vision quest retreat in Peru. The wealthy upper-class grad students all went down to see the miracles of the pre-colombian world, and do a form of hallucinogenic... Authentically.

Basically they drove around in cars on bad roads, wound up at a secluded place on some lake shore, got harangued a bit, did whatever hallucinogen and then:
1) staggered around glassy eyed
2) started ripping off their clothes
3) started puking voluminously

The upshot of it was that it really didn't look very fun and he was glad he decided to pass on the "host"

There are a lot of reasons to run around naked. Just not a lot of good ones.

RioBravo, thanks for that factoid, and does that suggest my memory is correct about the anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant (legal!) basis for much Klan participation in modern times? 1920s certainly were a period in which the mass immigration of the period and just before were putting great stress on some parts of the country, in terms of "cultural absorptive capacity", to coin a phrase.

Of course like everything else important instructive in our history, the problems with the mass (legal!) immigration of the early 20th century - problems that led to policy changes ("time outs") on such mass immigration, are largely forgotten. And if brought up at all, only with the distortion that "racism" or intolerance, and not normal human aversion to disruption (economic, cultural) were the nature of the reaction.

I would agree. They were for immigration restriction particularly to limit Catholics, central Europeans, and Jews (both country of origin and religion). They were also in favor of keeping America dry (with regard to alcohol and Mexicans).

Membership was primarily small farmers and factory laborers primarily WASP. Real studies show the membership was more progressive than the leadership with regard to government intervention in the economy.

The Klan is somewhat hard to study because too many writers repeat the same superficial aspects over and over again.

Ha. The science is settled people!

Seriously though, the left is still just as in love with eugenics as they ever were, they're just slightly better at hiding it now.

But the second you confront them with a disabled baby, it comes spewing out in full force. (Peter Singer just said insurance companies should withhold treatment for very ill babies, for example)

I know I keep going back to this, but there really is a reason why abortion clinics are disproportionately located in black neighborhoods. That wasn't an accident. Hell, the "notorious RBG" let the mask slip a few years ago when she said something like "oh, I thought we legalized abortion to keep the undesirable population down."

The 1920's Klan (though hateful) was primarily driven by economic and social issues. Race was often derivative - vices of immigrants, reefer madness of the Mexicans, and so on as well as job competition. Race as a primary driver was more true of the Reconstruction Klan and today's small groups.

Junior, as RioBravo helpfully notes, the Klan in the '20s was mostly driven by economic and social issues - including immigration (not just in principle but cuz Catholic, etc.) - so LA to me does not sound that surprising.

Remember the ethnic tensions in LA that predated the war and exploded during it (the Zoot Suit War). Elderly friend of mine told me that large parts of LA were off-limits to military when was back from his first USMC Pacific vacation (Guadalcanal) due to the Zoot Suit thing. Of course this didn't stop him from getting involved in a post-game brawl on the field of the Rose Bowl with sheriffs deputies after a UCLA (??) game during his liberty (a few nights in the San Pedro brig, where a high school classmate working there in the mess hall - my friend was from Glendale - recognized him in the chow line.

Actually, just my friend'sanecdotes/life history are an instructive microcosm of the pre-war LA region. Good buddy of his who was Japanese-American of course had to move away in '42; 2nd or 3rd generation Mexican-American buddy (they're friends to this day) enlisted in another branch, and Jim always laughs about what a "hard ass" this guy and his family were (meaning 1,000% assimilated yet proud Mexican-Americans who foamed at the mouth against any ethnically-based anti-Americanism).

When there were enough R.C. immigrants to want their own tax-funded schools, that's when the separation of Church and State laws and court cases started up to deny public funding for R.C. schools. I can't recall the decade(s) although 1840s onward would fit.

Huh. In my (limited) experience Montreal was the most truly bilingual city I've ever seen - everyone I ever dealt with was native fluent in both languages, and completely blase about speaking either.

Not counting Singapore, with their funny English, or Amsterdam (or Copenhagen where I've never been), where fluency in English has simply been a cultural/educational norm for a few generations.

My impression was that French-only was mostly a rural/small-town phenomenon in Quebec (driver of a horse carriage tour in Quebec City in the early 90s said Quebec City had only 5% English-speakers).

Spent a week out in the snow with the Vendieuxs (sp?), the francophone army brigade based inQ.C. (Valcartier)in the early 80s - only the officers spoke English - all Montrealers.

And I'll have to break ranks and report that one of my favorite vacations (did it5 or 6 times) was mid-winter trip to Quebec. Fantastic nordic skiing, great restaurants. Skating on the river. Hockey at Le Colisee. Spectacular snow and icecicles in the old city. Considering the 200-year drought we're starting out west, I'll be making plans to head there next February. This time I'll get in the QMJHL minor league game in a smaller town I've never done. I love the bitter cold - it keeps the riff-raff out (who don't understand you're never cold while x-country skiing, and if you have the clothes/gear you're never really cold while tramping betw. your quaint little hotel and a nice warm cafe).

make about a million radicals. And, maybe except for their supporters,
maybe 20 percent or so, which would make about 200 million. Other than
that, it's mostly moderates, who won't actually go out and jihad, but
they'll cheer the jihadists on. You've nothing to fear from Islam,
there's just no way that there are more than a three or four hundred

I really think in the 1920s the KKK was not simply the terrorist arm of the Democratic Party, as it had been during the Reconstruction. The Provisional IRA to Sinn Fein, one might say. But I think in the 1920s the Klan was more of an organization that tried to influence whichever was the dominant party in the places where it was located.

448 So, it turns out, if you call up Amazon and disclose only your name, address, and email account that you used to sign up with Amazon -- you know, stuff that's on your resume, business cards, etc. -- they'll discuss the last four digits of a credit card on file with gay abandon. As in, "did I leave my Visa on there that ends in 1234?" "No, all we show is a MasterCard that ends with 5678."

And, as it so happens, there is an information service out there that has a login and a password, and security questions if you forget your password, or you can use billing information if you forget your security questions -- which is the name on the card and last four digits.....or, if you forget your card information, they'll see if you know your address. And their tech support guys will blithely reset the password and fix the questions if you have the information that Amazon just gave you and you used the same card.

As this soaks in, I expect a whole lot of people to be canceling any credit cards they have on file at Amazon.

Thanks for sharing, cooth.

Was shocked to see I had a credit card on file there - I never leave cards on file on any e-commerce sites, anywhere, ever, never have - so just deleted it (and the old expired one, too, just for good measure).

Which reminds me to do my Doenitz imitation and embark on a mass password change-over, a la changing the Enigma rotor settings and codebooks in the U-boat force. Something everyone should do at irregular but not infrequent intervals.

Wonder how many here also routinely lock their credit histories - procedure varies by state - but it pre-emptively nukes most meaningful ($$$$) ID-theft schemes before they start. And opening up the histories for the infrequent need (mortgage, other loan, background check) is easy and cheap.

Morons, get thee to your state's consumer affairs bureau website and see how to lock down your credit history with the three major private credit bureaus .......

470 @458 Anyway, it is unclear to me how a girl can rape a guy.
--------------------------

The person who forces the penetration is the rapist. A guy who is compelled to penetrate by his partner is a guy who is being raped, regardless of the gender of the partner.

While male on female rape gets all of the attention, female on male happens quite a bit as well. Problem is, the Feds didn't include it in their rape statistics until a few years ago. And prior to that, any localities that included it in the statistics they provided to the Feds had their numbers thrown out. So it hasn't gotten much attention (in addition to the fact that it violates The Narrative).

Slate (surprisingly enough) had a pretty good piece on it a while back.

473 @458 On topic - Jack Barsky is alive and well in the USA. Got a good job too. Why wasn't this guy hanged?
--------------------------

The information that he passed along appears to have been fairly low key. And it was clear to the FBI that he'd gone native quite a while before they caught onto him. For someone like him, a prison sentence would have been the normal solution. But since he'd gone native, they figured he was no longer a threat. So they traded the possibility of a sentence for full cooperation on his part.

If you're looking for an idiot, perhaps you'd best start by checking the mirror...

Erections don't turn themselves on or off just because the male wants them too. The upper brain can influence the lower brain, but the lower brain ultimately makes its own decisions. And a man can become sexually excited even when he logically knows that having sex in that situation would be a bad idea.

Additionally, there are ways to "aid" the process - Viagra being the most obvious.

You seem rather ignorant about human physiology.

Most of sexual function is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Which means that it's not completely under voluntary control and in fact may be completely involuntary. After all can you ejaculate on demand? Can you become erect on demand (without any stimulation or mental imagery)? Can you become non-erect on demand while being stimulated? Almost certainly not for most men.

This doesn't mean though that men are slaves to their dicks - it just means they don't have complete voluntary control over their sexual functioning because that's just how the male reproductive system is wired. So erection != desire and non-erection != non-desire.

And that's completely independent of the fact that underage boys or girls cannot give legal sexual consent to an adult. Even if they in fact want to have sex with them.
