9 Well, it's the final morning with a wifi connection and a cup o' joe overlooking the back yard.
Moving truck shows up in about an hour (before 8. Go figure), and the guy last night estimated 5 hours to load, as the house is completely packed and crated. Not the cheapest way to go, but damn - the folks yesterday did a fantastic job of building custom sized crates and boxes for all of the furniture.
The lead guy yesterday asked "where overseas" we were going - laughed when I replied " a foreign land known as Texas".

So today is the last time tooling around Fairfax County and a couple of other parts of NoVa. To those morons here in the swampland on the Powtowmack, keep up the good work...

Oh, and JJ, the dogs are NOT getting out of bed this AM. This is gonna be fun.

13 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

If you're a fan of Broadway musicals, you know the lyrical team of (Betty) Comden and (Adolph) Green, whose credits include On the Town, Singin' in the Rain, Bells Are Ringing, The Will Rogers Follies and On the Twentieth Century.

It so happened that, one evening, Betty Comden was attending a Broadwy show when, during intermission, she was approached by a man who greeted her like an old friend.

Comden couldn't quite place him. "But don't you remember?" the man asked. "I was in the chorus of Bonanza Bound." That was the one Comden and Green show that never made it to New York, opening and closing in Philadelphia some twenty-five years before.

"Oh, of course," Comden smiled. "How are you?"

"I'm fine,"
the man replied. "Do you remember that night in Philly after the final performance? We were all feeling so down and you and Adolph got us all together onstage and told us how you were going to rewrite the show, bring us all back into rehearsal, go out of town again and then bring it to Broadway."

"Yes,"
Comden answered, "of course I do."

"Well, I was wondering if it would be all right if I went out now and got another job!"

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

24 Islamic militants learned how to derail trains from Lawrence, who learned by reading about Andrews Raiders, who were largely from northwest Ohio. They actually turned out to be not very good at it. It was a sultry day.

It is trivially simple to derail a train, if you can get to the tracks and there is no one to stop you. A couple of ruddy schoolboys did it with a small rock, once.

It has been well declared by the Left that if one is "trans" then they are "born that way" while at the same time they declare that "gender is a social construct." Just as with whether one is straight or a non-oppressor has a double standard where gay considered normal, while straight is considered an aberration to be abandoned, a child whose parents declare that their special little snowflake is "trans" means that that child was "born that way," a child who grows up normally is considered an aberration to be forced to choose a more politically correct "gender identity"...

66 When the federal government loses money it is known as a 'subsidy'.

When milk producers produce too much milk for the market to absorb, at too high a cost, due to government regulations, the government buys up the surplus milk to support the price paid to the producers. The government then pays another vendor to turn the surplus milk into cheese, which gets stored in government warehouses because the market for cheap government cheese doesn't exist. Eventually the cheap government cheese, which the government has paid for three times over, is given to poor people who can't afford the high retail price of milk caused by government milk price supports.

Thus, we need more government.

Penny:

I found a package of instant 'yogurt' pudding, but it takes fresh whole milk to make. . . and I'm out of milk, been out of milk for #TwoWeeks 'cuz I hate to shop, but I have powdered milk 'cuz I buy a lot of it 'cuz it has a long shelf life.

So I made yogurt with the powdered milk, and ya, it turned into something like a watery pudding with artificial strawberry flavor which is ok because it isn't biscuits and sausage gravy, ok? So now I don't have to go to Walmart for at least 'nother coupla days. See?

99 You know, millions and millions of Americans are collecting social security disability, mostly because they are lamebrained, and have the types of ailments that result from all those things they tell you not to do when you are younger.

Instead of just handing them cash, couldn't we put them to work on amtrack? How hard is it to drive a vehicle that sits on rails? Obviously the people doing it now aren't very good at it. Or you could sit these folks on the fronts of the trains, looking out for debris that might derail them.

Better than just sitting at home, waiting for their checks every month.

100 Amtrak was formed on the British Leyland model, by snatching up the remnants of a dying industry that didn't have the customer base to support it. They rake it in on The Corridor, and blow it all plus subsidy trying to teach the rest of us what real travel is all about.

On-board service used to be good, when it was staffed by the people who had originally worked for real railroads. The dining car food was great. Those days are long gone, though.

TFG was bitching about two things, principally, yesterday: BamaFo, which if you will recall was a woman explaining why it was important to vote for him, and, of all things, people who read Ayn Rand, because they think everyone is a moocher. Does he not know his own wife's nickname?

Woody Allen said he took the Evelyn Wood course, and War and Peace is about Russia. Well, Atlas Shrugged is about railroads. Taggart Transcontinental had a maintenance-of-way employee named Galt.

This is the core of the Left.

They come up with some idjit idea ex nihilo and develop it en vacuo and declare it to be true. Everything is filtered through this "revealed truth."

It is a perverted version of Thomas Aquinas' view of faith vs. science: The revealed truth is true, and if evidence is counter to that, than the evidence is corrupt.

I recommend reading Yuval Levin's "The Tyranny of Reason" to more fully explore this.

152 Eurofighter GmnH Taifun is the model on which the JSF program is built. A jobs program disguised as a procurement program.

The Typhoon idea dates all the way back to the 1970s. The Dassault Rafale actually exists because France got mad at the other Eurofighter consortium partners not selecting the French design. So France huffed and puffed, then stormed off and built the Rafale. Leaving Britain, Germany, and Italy to muddle along until they roped in Spain and after the German reunification talked Germany to rejoin the consortium.

And the price tag per Typhoon airframe is bit hard to nail down. But you can be safe to say $120 million might be a conservative estimate.

And considering how batshit crazy Kim is, those generals are at risk either way. He has already brutally executed his girlfriend, his uncle, his mentor, etc., all for real or imagined offenses. He could just as easily kill his "loyal" lieutenants whenever the whim strikes him. Tv news said Temple's ER got filled and had to temporarily divert patients last night. How many patients can it take, do you happen to know?

Yes, this! Second corollary, just as you start to drift off neighbor will start banging her car doors and screaming at kids.
Third. Hung over you hope for an extra hour of sleep and then the yard man starts his leaf blower under your window.

Nazi Germany lasted 12 years and the military for the most part were elite Prussians (the zealots notwithstanding). The DPRK has been with us since over 65 years and most everyone there has been brought up brainwashed. Even more of a closed totalitarian society than Hitlerite Germany, so who the hell knows who to trust, let alone feeling that opposing the regime is the moral/right thing to do?

180 @153 Bigby, been there, my brother. I don't envy you the task but at least parts should be "interesting work." You...do...have a tractor, don't you?

Last week I hand-excavated under a 1930's "Michigan basement" to replace a drain trap I'm pretty sure had Greek satyrs inscribed on it when it was new, and install a cleanout, which apparently hadn't been invented yet when it went in. I was surprised at the integrity of what we had taken to be crappy cellar-floor concrete, since I had to bash it with a well-driller's maul (not enough room to swing a real sledge). The sound a short-handle roundpoint makes, sucking mud, must be part of the Muzak in Hell. Take this hammer, carry it to the captain.

Beneath the floor was what they used to call "general fill," and a generous quantity of groundwater, clear, thank God. I could now write a thesis on what was in that fill, just like the real archeologists do. Did you know, there's glass in there? Vintage.

Anybody hear how Buffalo-roamin' Dave's door frame came out? That was an interesting project.

I read the news from DPRK and read that the most terrifying thing is if one bullet is missing for any military exercise. Heads will roll if that one bullet isn't found. Whole military units can be blacklisted, and officers demoted.
They are afraid that one bullet might end up in a gun that somehow is
near the great leader.

It was either the late 1970s or early 1980s when there was a coup d'etat in South Korea. Until then there had been the form of democracy but the government was actually run by a few people at the top. That changed when a general pulled out a gun and shot them before he was gunned down himself. At that point the form of democracy became reality. I suspect that keeping that memory in mind, Little Kim does not allow anybody to have loaded guns in his presence.

204 A CCW holder in Michigan is on trial for murder. Apparently he traded road rage with another guy. At a red light the other guy got out and came up to the CCW holder's truck. The CCW holder shot him, he claims in self-defense. Said the other guy was punching him through the window and threatening to kill him.

The prosecutor made a big deal out of the CCW holder being a member of the NRA, a member of a CCW rights organization through which he had purchased CCW insurance, and the fact the CCW holder's second call after 911 was to a gun rights lawyer.

All that sounds appealable.

205 I have a buddy I was in the service with who lives in MD. Fredrick it was. He drove a truck picking up the milk at the dairy farms. I was out there on business, had some extra time and went with him on his route. He took the milk to a plant, pumped it into this big gizmo that dried that milk and shot it out of the front like a big snow blower. People with shovels put it gunny sacks. Below the nozzle they were making butter. Helluva operation.
