Makes sense. This is another for of amnesty. The trade deal is really an immigration deal as it allows virtually unlimited "temporary" labor to come to the US. We all know 85% of these "temporary" workers will never go home. Democrats get new voters, Republicans get cheap/slave labor.

>>>Makes sense. This is another for of amnesty. The trade deal is really an immigration deal as it allows virtually unlimited "temporary" labor to come to the US. We all know 85% of these "temporary" workers will never go home. Democrats get new voters, Republicans get cheap/slave labor.

Win-win all around.

He is a career politician with a safe seat, who does not understand two things:
1. Turning Paducah into "El Paducah" won't help most of his constituents.
2. Like Neville chamberlain, he is still laboring under the delusion that Obama is a gentleman who can be reasoned with.

42 Note to Michelle Obama: many people, at some point in their lives, have been mistaken for employees at a store. However only those who think that they are better than the employees are offended by it. Evidently being the first lady is insufficient for you. You evidently consider yourself to be the Empress of the United States and far above those plebeians who wear name tags; in which case I understand Her Majesty's Imperial rage at being mistaken for a mere commoner.

I tend to think the same thing is going on here wrt gay "marriage." I strongly, strongly doubt that in the space of just three years we have gone from even states like California voting against it, to suddenly having supermajorities in favour. No way. Not buying it. Frankly, the ruling class wants it, and is bullying everyone else into acquiescence, or at least silence. After all, if you tell a pollster you're against it, some folks at least are going to wonder if their information might "accidentally" end up in the hands of radical gay groups who will then go after them.

194 >>I've always liked Kelly Clarkson. Voted for her that first season after she rocked the Aretha song. Great voice and I like that she refuses to be Hollywood-ized. She's a great model for normal-sized women as well.

She was by far the best winner. Her voice is amazing. What is funny is that it took Simon half the season to 'get it'. He was rooting for this other girl whose name I can't remember, which tells you how well she did post idol.

Carrie has had a good career, but although I acknowledge her talent, I don't enjoy the tone of her voice.

A clerk in Decatur, GA used deadly force to defend himself against a pair of armed robbers last week.

According to local media reports, two suspects enterered the Smoke Shop on Snapfinger Road around 1pm. The suspects put a shotgun to the clerk's throat and demanded money.

The pair quickly figured out they chose the wrong target. The man grabbed the barrel of the shotgun and pushed it out of the way. He simultanesouly drew his own concealed handgun and opened fire.

One of the suspects was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene. The second suspect fled the scene. He later turned himself in.

He told me she was tinier than he thought she'd be (in stature, not weight) but her voice was HUGE.

He said that just about every other singer appearing had to have their vocals pre-recorded or corrected by Auto-Tune, but Clarkson nailed it every time, perfectly.

From rehearsals to performance, he said she was a consummate professional, a total "natural" and the only "real" singer there. And also the nicest. She grew up in Texas and talked horses a lot.

So, to survive, he has to convert his hotel to no-gays-at-all, nyuh-uh, not even if you ask nice. A self-segregating oddity. And all of a sudden the rest of America wants to see New York, and he caters to them. Before long all the stylish in-crowd are aping the manners of real people, like, flannel shirts and Pabst beer, what have you. They even think about taking up straight sex, just for the irony.

2. I've Always Been Crazy -- Waylon Jennings

406 Country music, or old time string music, is not as rustic as most would believe. Southerners were intensely proud of their technology, such as it was, and especially the railroads. The Wreck of the 97, an actual event near Salisvury NC, may be the first country song; its recorded version (Fiddlin Jack) is certainly the first country record.

The Louisville and Nashville had a crack express train called the Pan-American -- you've heard the name, look it up, it's Hank Sr, DeFord Bailey, and the Belmores -- and WSM had its own little broadcast studio along the mainline. Every single night, they would broadcast, at exactly the same time because the Pan American was always on time, the sound of the train passing, live, with a microphone out the window, and announce the name of the engineer and conductor on that day's run. "Ladies and Gentlemen: The Pan American."

And five minutes later, the Grand Ole Opry was on the air. Virtually every reference, in recorded-era music, to that lonesome whistle blowing is not a memory of a backwoods childhood, but of what preceded the Opry, every single time.

From a WAPO article earlier this year:

Conservatives who believe in U.S. sovereignty should be outraged that
ISDS would shift power from American courts, whose authority is derived
from our Constitution, to unaccountable international tribunals.
Libertarians should be offended that ISDS effectively would offer a free

labor and environmental rules.

440 Arthur Smith. WBTV in Charlotte

Wiki:

After wartime service in the US Navy, Smith returned to Charlotte. He was joined in his recording career by his brothers, wife Dorothy and vocalist Roy Lear. He also started his own radio show, Carolina Calling, on WBT. Smith emceed part of the first live television program broadcast in 1951 by the new television station, WBTV, in Charlotte.[3]

His own The Arthur Smith Show was the first country music television show to be syndicated nationally; it ran for 32 years in 90 markets coast to coast.[3][1] His band, renamed Arthur Smith & His Crackerjacks, became an institution in the Southeast area through the new medium. They had a daily early-morning variety program, Carolina Calling, which was carried on the CBS-TV network as a summer-replacement during the 1950s. This increased Smith's national visibility. Unusually for a country music band, his band relied on tight arrangements with written "charts" for most of their music.

469 *hums Waiting for the Robert E. Lee*
That's an Al Jolson song!

The Robt E Lee (one or two of them anyway) was built in Madison Indiana. They had to tow her across the Ohio to paint the name on the side. And whilst in Indiana, you know Bluegrass was invented in Whiting? Where Bill and his brother were working at the Standard. Monroe could throw an empty 55-gal drum the length of a boxcar. He could throw a full one too, but they didn't say how far.

You can't write all those songs about how much you miss Mother and Dad while you're living with them. Lonesome songs are for the displaced.

Local TV and radio stations had a lot of live string band music. It fit the format, and it used to be cheaper to move the musicians than buy the network feeds. One reason so many country players died in car crashes, in the day -- they were constantly on the road, even making broadcast music. (Martha White!)

Marriage selects the great middle of the bell shaped curve - basically lopping off everything 4 sigma or more outside the norm in either direction. This is a statistical phenomenon: rare people are unlikely to encounter enough other rare people for marriage to be a likely outcome. In other words, it is lonely at both the top and the bottom of the distribution.

I used to keep up a small personal project of taking every serious crime reported in the local liberal fishwrap, and doing the basic investigative legwork to learn whether or not it had been committed by a paroled felon.

The results should not have come as any surprise to anyone.

It should also come as no surprise that the "reporters" on staff at said local liberal fishwrap have no interest in doing such legwork themselves.

Not necessarily. Plenty of us who do understand math get tickets, too.

It's all about the marginal value of that dollar (or ten) and how sophisticated you can make your rationalization. For example, I only play above $200 million for powerball and mega millions, as that's approximately the point where the expectation on a dollar exceeds the dollar. Well, if you ignore the fact that the reported amount is over time, anyway. And then, for all the times I play over 200, I can *afford* to play in the 100-200 range, because on average my expectation is above a dollar. Also ignoring taxes.

Tiller's killer will be in prison for the rest of his life, and Tiller was just shot.

That's one of the reasons they gave his killer so little jail time. Apparently they had a hard time figuring out which of those abuses actually killed him.

Uh huh. It was discovered in 1999 and will pass about 6 million miles from Earth.

In 1996 Comet Hyakutake, which was also about a mile wide, passed about 10 million miles from Earth.

It was discovered only two months before then, when it was near the
orbit of Saturn. In other words, it was headed almost directly for us
when it was first spotted.

There is always the remote chance of a collision. For example there is a 1200 meter diameter rock 2015 FY344 which has a remote chance of making a bank shot off of another asteroid and hitting us in 2020. Its normal orbit is in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter but there could be a near collision that could alter that orbit. The chances of that happening? 2 in ten billion. So kind of unlikely.

621 Your expected return on a $1 is below $1 no matter how high the jackpot gets.

No, it isn't. The term expectation means (roughly) the product of the probability of an event and the value of that event. For Mega Millions, you pick 5 of 75 numbers and 1 of 15, which has just under 260,000,000 combinations. So your chance of winning is 1/260,000,000. If the amount you win is more than 260,000,000 then the expectation on a dollar spent is more than the dollar. The amount won can be that high because of the pot rollover, though its rare. Between taxes and taking the present value of the pot, and the wrinkle of the potential for multiple winners, we're probably really talking only about the record setting $500-600 million pots. If we're discussing this seriously.

I was just trying to make a joke about my own capacity for rationalization.

Well, the odds are like 170 mill to one. So any time the jackpot gets over $200 mill, a dollar bet is still just a dollar and the winnings are over the odds amount.

It's still stupid. I mean why buy a ticket, when I already have the winner?
Posted by: Nip Sip at May 12, 2015 12:32 PM (0FSuD)

___________

The odds are less than that.

If you take the lump sum, you lose something like 30% of the winning and you have to pay 35% tax.

If you take the 25 year plan, you still pay tax and each year, inflation eats a little of that value.

So the jackpot would really need to be somewhere around $300M for your present after-tax $1 to be worth less than the expected after tax net present value of the winning.

Playing the second $1 is a complete waste since the expected value of that second dollar is basically $0. Only way the second dollar has value is if teh jackpot doubles if you play $2 vs $1.

Now, what was a questionable decision was for a white guy to stop for gas in a heavily black neighborhood of Harm City.

The reason that Malls got so popular in the '70's and through the '90's was because they are more safe than the alternatives.

It was all enclosed in a single space with private security. While online shopping contributed to the decline of the Mall, the fact that crime rates dropped since the early/mid- '90's is also a huge factor.

728 I thought lottery commissions took a hefty cut right off the top (ca.
25% or so, is my impression), much like parimutuel betting (where it's
ca. 10%, IIRC). If so, that changes the odds dramatically.

That cut affects the expectation by lowering the pot, not the probability. For a rollover pot, that means it will take more drawings to get to the point where expectation exceeds 1. Having more drawings decreases the likelihood of reaching that point (as someone else may win sooner), but that doesn't affect the probability of winning during a given drawing.

pretty much.

my college was called racist when we had a slew of attacks on commuters in the parking lots (swarms of "youths" would descend on people and steal their phones / wallets) because they included their race in the description.

so then we started getting emails like this "a student was accosted by a group of 6-10 men in their late teens or early twenties. witnesses say they were all around 6 feet tall, wearing jeans and sweat shirts."

Oh, thanks. That describes about 1/2 the student population.

Posted by: mynewhandle at May 12, 2015 01:12 PM (AkOaV)

753 so someone wins, but are you feeling lucky? and does that mean any thing?

My Dad got me a scratch off as a birthday gag gift when I was little. Won $5 and he got to spend the next month explaining how they don't all do that.

When I was in college, I matched 4 of 6 numbers and won short of $200. The following week I had unexpected and unavoidable expenses that worked out to $10 less than the amount I won. I've never been sure about the whole random thing since.

I also knew a guy who went to a hockey game where they were giving a million bucks to his seat if a goal was scored at a particular second of the game. Haven't heard from him since.

Basically right. Your chance of winning if you don't buy a ticket? Zero. Your chance of winning if you buy one ticket? One in xx million, whatever the odds are on the particular game you choose. Tiny, at any rate. But buying two, ten, or twenty tickets nets you no material improvement on those odds.

So buy one ticket, to get in the game, and rent a dream for a week. That's a rational act. Buying any more is throwing money away.
