But they're guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years

Over the years, as Europe began it's slide to where it is today, Momma used to say that we should have let the Russkies overrun all of Europe as punishment.

All things considered, I think she might have been on to something.

72 I was building a house for my parents in 2011. Every weekend I would run up to my sisters place to work on it until it was done. One day I was standing in line at Home Depot with my dad as he bought another trailer load of stuff and he quietly said as he took back his ID showing military service "I don't know why I get this discount, I never did anything to deserve it".

I simply told him "Daddy, you showed up. You were there and ready weren't you?"

He was 19 and made ensign but was never assigned a ship as the war ended just as he went through the process. In his later years he was grateful to see the military celebrated again but somehow he just couldn't relate to the heroism aspect of how veterans were being portrayed. He seemed kind of guilt ridden actually.

And neither one of my Vietnam veteran brothers speak of their experience either.

91 In WWI the order was given to go over the top, and they went. It was described as men facing a driving rain. They would turn their head and hunch their shoulders, but it was rain. It was bullets. The order was give and they went.

In WWII, the order was given, and they went. On December 8th, people lined up to enlist. In the pacific the order was given to land on the beach and secure the island, and they went and did as they were ordered.

All over Europe it was the same. Patton outrunning his supply lines, forced to stop because he was out of gasoline.

In the sixties, LBJ and the Democrats called it our grandest adventure to go to South Vietnam and save the world from communism, and people refused to go. Some fled to Canada. Millions protested and burned their draft cards.

In Iraq, Bush gave the order, and people back in the states tried to sabotage everything connected to the illegal war.

No, they seem to be working their way up the chain. Observation, primary/basic trainer, advanced etc.

107 Actually we don't owe a debt. They knew what they were doing. Protecting their county's homes and families. The real debt we owe is to the present. I don't think they were thing about a 2015 America when they landed on Normandy. They were thinking about their families and friends. What we owe them is the same commitment. What we owe them is the individual response to the current threat. If we can join an organization like the military to address it, great. If not, I will stand with what I said on my Radio show last night. If they kill Pam Gellar, every mosque in America needs to burn. That we can do as individuals.

130 My late Uncle was a waist gunner on B-24s, over Germany.

Even into his late seventies, he was one tough and tenacious man.

After the war, he made a great career as a machinist and toolmaker in the Southern California aircraft industry. One of the very best, and they paid him as such.

I will tell you this, his watching those bombs fall, most missing their targets and often hitting residential areas.... he wrestled with those images, to his dying day.

There is NO WAY to measure the respect due such men.

Look up 'New York City Draft Riot' (1863) -- it's not so much a downward progression over time. Some people have different ideas about the advisability of different conflicts. Would I, as a northerner, have wanted to fight the southerners in order to take away the rights of individual states? Anymore then today, Colorado legalizes marijuana but it is against Federal law. I think Colorado is wrong but I'd still refuse to take up arms against them. They'll figure it out eventually.

Best of all, we now have an all volunteer army manned by some real patriots.

141 Well wonder if the Marshall Islands would let anyone recover those planes? Interesting way to spend lottery winnings.

The Corsair would be real fun to rebuild because a good portion of each wing was still fabric covered as that photo shows. The Dauntless dive bombers are in incredible condition, the radio antenna mast in front of the windshield is made of wood even as the fabric covered control surfaces have been eaten away.

Had a cousin who was the tip of the spear in WWII. He landed at Normandy and was among the first into each town shown in Saving Private Ryan.
Set a then record for consecutive days in combat.
There was an ancient German church the Nazis had holed up in. We wouldn't bomb it and they couldn't shoot it up. So they waited until night and went in using only their bayonets. When a nazi fired a gun they would crawl toward the muzzle flash. Then they would jump up and stab, then throw themselves to the side to avoid being shot. My Cousin said he jumped up, stabbed...and hit the stone column the Nazi was behind.
Brave, brave men. We need more like them.

Can't help but remember two of my family members who served:

My father couldn't enlist, so he served in the Merchant Marine, sailing across the North Atlantic in convoys. They lost more men, as a %, than any other unit. My uncle flew a Hellcat off a carrier in the Pacific during the war.

157 My father. Irish immigrant. Volunteered after Pearl Harbor at the ancient age of 35.

Landed in Oran, Algeria in November 1942. As a front line ordnanceman, endured North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. The only thing about it all that he ever mentioned was the Battle of Montecassino. "That was rough." And that he liberated Rome. Proud of that. As he well should have been.

Finished up he war in Leghorn, waiting to go to Japan. Finally went home in November 1945.

I was at the flyover at the National Mall today. All I could do was think of him. How he is a hero to me and that I miss him every day.

RIP, dad. Rest...in...peace.

159 My Dad is almost 91. All in his platoon are dead. So many gave for our country and so many so do not give a shit. I listen to his stories and feel terrible that he had to go through this. But he is so proud of what he did in this war, even though it was heartbreaking. I am so proud of him and all that served. We are surrounded by political pussies that should have served. ( with the exception of McCain, who will milk his experience forever. Real men let it go, and live it only in their hearts.
