And on the Iran shill bill:

The Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday to approve legislation allowing Congress to review a nuclear deal with Iran in a 98-1 vote.

A vote to disapprove a nuclear deal with Iran would not kill it. President Obama could veto such a measure, and the House and Senate would then need two-thirds majorities to override his veto.

56 "Don't Underestimate Mike Huckabee"

Synopsis: Huckabee may be a huckster, but his rhetoric plays well with the grassroots and the working class.

The American middle class has seen a lot of good-paying jobs disappear overseas or be taken over by illegal immigrants. When voters hear party's "Free Trade is good" rhetoric, what they hear is "Exporting your jobs is good... for us and our donors."

The article has a point.

62 May 8th, 1945. Victory in Europe in World War Two.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton
---------------------------------------------

The beaten foe emerged.
All over the broad Atlantic, wherever they had been working or lying hid, the U-boats surfaced, confessing the war's end. A few of them, prompted by determination or struck by guilt, scuttled or destroyed themselves, or ran for shelter, not knowing that there was none; but mostly they did what they had been told to do, mostly they hoisted their black surrender flags, and stayed where they were, and waited for orders.
They rose, dripping and silent, in the Irish Sea, and at the mouth of the Clyde, and off the Lizard in the English Channel, at the top of the Minches where the tides raced; they rose near Iceland, where Compass Rose wassunk and off the north-west tip of Ireland, and close to the Faeroes, and on the Gibraltar run where the sunk ships lay so thick, and near St. Johns and Halifax and in the deep of the Atlantic, with three thousand fathoms of water beneath their keel.
They surfaced in secret places, betraying themselves and their frustrated plans: they rose within sight of land, they rose far away in mortal waters, where on the map of the battle, the crosses that were the sunken ships were etched so many and so close that the ink ran together. They surfaced above their handiwork, in hatred or in fear, sometimes snarling their continued rage, sometimes accepting thankfully a truce they had never offered to other ships, other sailors.
They rose, and lay wherever they were on the battlefield, waiting for the victors to claim their victory. - Nicolas Monsarrat ("V.E. Day," from The Cruel Sea)

On the UK election, there was this:

Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander was unseated by a 20-year-old lesbian student who was standing for the SNP.

Mr Alexander previously held a massive majority of 59.6% but was a victim of a monumental swing to the SNP in Scotland. Mhairi Black, who is now set to become the youngest MP since 1667 and would also end 70 years of Labour representation in Paisley, received 23,548 votes (50.9%), over Mr Alexanders 17,864 votes (38.6%).

71 It's amazing when liberals demand of the Catholic church that the Catholic Church needs to modify their stance and beliefs concerning their religious core values.

Sort of like liberals demanding that the Islamic faith give up their basic tenant that non Islamic people who create images of Islam's Prophet be killed.

Liberals are if nothing else, consistent in their beliefs.

80 It was never the destruction of capital that allowed for the re-emergence of Germany or the US after WW2 as economic powerhouses: it was the end of repressive regulations and laws that distorted the market and suppressed production.
Italy, Austria and France were hit as hard but never really had the same economic surge. Why?

Discuss.

88 Happy about the UK elections.

UK public spending:
- 36.6% of GDP in 2000
- over 50% by 2009 and 2010
- still around 49% in 2013

Sensible Brits who avoid polls (which are garbage) took this election decisively.

It means a future of Socialism (Labour) in England has been rejected. This means that Brits believe Socialism is manifestly not "progressive."

They do not want a Socialist Future, so it is simply wrong to call Socialists of any stripe "progressive." They have lost all right to that language.

Moreover, I'm very happy to see the SNP do so well. Scotland may not exit the UK quite yet, but more devolution of power is surely more likely to come their way, as it has done in Wales.

Let the world be a teeming mass of competing economic, social, and political experiments. Let's see what succeeds, and run with that.

At bottom, I believe that's what the Brits voted for yesterday.

92 There's a new book out on Audie Murphy, reviewed at Am Spec:

http://tinyurl.com/nje6s7d

I had the opportunity in the late 90s to go with my dad to Arlington National Cemetery; visiting Audie's grave was high on dad's list of things to do (the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was the other).

Despite the many signs prohibiting the placing of objects on anyone's grave, Audie's was loaded with small American flags. We joked that the groundskeepers were afraid Audie's ghost would chase them down if they messed with his spot.

94 The Rutgers University Student Assembly recently passed a bill intended to support ethnic and gender diversity by adding multiple Scarlet Knights that could be black, Latino, Asian, female or third gender in addition to the existing Caucasian Scarlet Knight, said Emmet Brennan, student assembly parliamentarian.

'What we were thinking - the way the bill's laid out - it's not defined that we need an Asian knight, a black knight, a Latino knight,' said Brennan, a School of Environmental and Biological Sciences first-year student. 'That we would really leave it up to the different student organizations...and basically the student body as a whole to determine how many knights they'd like and what these knights would represent.'

Brennan said he founded the idea behind the bill working as a press box server at a football game, where he noticed the mascot had blue eyes and light skin.

'This does not seem right,' Brennan said. 'Our mascot does not represent how diverse we are as a school.'

103 Free trade back in the '60's when the US had a space program would make sense. You don't want your textile workers trying to compete with someone in Bangladesh who works for $5 a week wages. Instead, you want to be doing high tech welding, or running a CNC milling machine producing high tech machine tools that no one else on the planet can make.

We don't have a space program of any significance now, and those semiconductor fabs are in China now, while IT workers from India are being imported by high tech companies who don't want to pay the wages demanded by US workers. Instead we have a population competing for a very few academic positions (union), or getting law degrees for political reasons, either as a political activists or trying to score one of the lucrative political positions.

So, if you want everyone to be politicians, lawyers, academics, and community activists, free trade would make sense. You want those fresh strawberries from Costa Rica because California needs the water to preserve the delta smelt.

In 1952, my dad made about $60 per week, and to make up for lack of money, he taught me how to hunt, fish and grow food.

174 In honor of MP4's Hollywood stories, here's one about Audie when he was making the movie Death Glare (from TVTropes):

Death Glare: Although he did occasionally get angry enough to raise his voice, a hostile glare and a few soft-spoken but threatening words from him were enough to get most normal people to back down. The director of Big Jake made one and a half movies with him, then quit after an argument where Murphy leaned forward and glared into his face. The director thought "Holy ***, this guy's killed how many Germans and the only thing I've ever done is run over a cat on the freeway! I'm doomed!" And quit on the spot. They reconciled to some extent, but the director refused to work with Murphy again. "I'm not directing anybody I'm afraid of," he would say. (Nobody really knows what the argument was about. The director claimed it was creative differences about how to handle a piece of dialogue, but a friend of both men claimed that Murphy was angry at the director for threatening to fire a crew member or supporting actor, probably a friend of Murphy's, in the middle of a poker game.)

175 Got to fly in a B17 years ago...Wings Over America. Took off from John Wayne flew out to Pacific and circled back. I saved up for 2 years for the $350 ticket. 20 minutes of awe. The noise inside was deafening but the plane bouncing was not nearly as disconcerting as modern jets. B17s went through too much and took lots of hits. I felt safer in that plane than any commercial airline. We all came off the flight with grins that lasted a.week.

190 Once upon a time I made my living buying grain from elevators. Find the elevator willing to part with the grain at my price, transport it to an end user or exporter, collect the money, pay the bills, deposit the margin in the bank. Once in the bank, loan it back to the elevator for their operating capital. Collect the interest, deposit in the bank. Elevator needs their bookwork done for the IRS, do it for them, charge a fee and require last right of refusal on all grain transactions.

We were pirates, once upon a time.

Yeah, I worked for a reseller. Resellers hate her even more than HP employees. She's most remembered for setting up a sales model where HP Direct would compete directly with HP resellers.

And of course, it being HP, they had a separate hierarchy of sales people on the direct side and on the reseller side, who were in essence competing against each other.

Which led to channel sales guys not wanting to put sales forecasts in their pipelines for fear of the deal being stolen by direct sales guys, which led to it being impossible for HP to forecast production, which led to a million other issues.

Plus, I'm sure there was a lot of inter-departmental hate going on over there at the time.

And I think she was CEO when they spun desktops / notebooks off from imaging and printing. Which meant another whole hierarchy of sales people on both the direct and channel sides...

it was a nightmare. Meg whitman actually seems to be doing well unwinding all of that though.

And to be fair, it didn't start with Carly. But I mean... she came in and made it much worse, not better.

mynewhandle, I think i might be a few years older than you, so it wasn't quite so bad. I actually was really interested in finding a good history of africa, I've certainly always been fascinated by egyptology, but due to the lack of written language in much of the country, and the political slant to english written histories, it was really hard to find anything.

King Leopolds Ghost was very good, but it was still obvious the author had a political slant. One of the things that amused the hell out of me was his talking about a clerk who noticed issue with the books at his company and reported it - but he could not for the life of him figure out why this businessperson would possibly care about the morality involved in hurtingafricans! He mused on it at length. And he mentioned in his afterward or forward that he thought he gave short shrift to the religious motivations of the anti-slavery crusaders in the britain and the US.

And yes, i was... surprised, but not shocked to find out that 12 years of American History class was all bullshit.

As I got older and started asking questions and seeing the dumbfounded look on teachers faces, i realized that they were just regurgitating the bullshit in the book in front of them and had no idea what they were talking about.
