Potentially Interim ONT - Devil's Own Lasagna edition [krak/t]

Toledo is kicking my ass, but I don't see anything else in the offing, and Maet is still living it up in some hot spring with several other sweaty men and possibly a reindeer.

Most people would embrace the modern world and take a bath in a lovely new tub with actual plumbing. I can only guess Maet is trying to ready himself for the coming neo-Luddite utopia being jammed up our collective asses.

Ahhh, the good old days of a life uncluttered and unsoiled by the ravages of Modernity.

This ONT brought to you by What the Actual Hell?

3 Is The Next Monarch of Britain a Ghost Sycamore?

According to the 'educated' blathering of the Left, the Duchess of Cabridge gave birth to the 4th in line to the British throne neither a price or a princess, but some entity that may be female, or male, or even a fox, or a ghost, or a tree!

Although, I'm not happy about the fact that if someone was to ask me where I'm from and I have to reply ASS. Which, in a way, may be fitting after the revolution.

Lucky.

In Nevada, last November, we voted down a massive "margins tax" on businesses by nearly 4:1.

So what does the Governor do with his new GOP majority (first GOP trifecta in nearly 100 years)?

Propose that very same tax and call it a fee... for the children of course.

My state Sen. was a known squish, while my Assemblyman sold out his soul to become Speaker.

Still, if the GOP hadn't taken each chamber, the Dems would have voted through the Governor's proposal anyway. At least with a GOP majority, major pro-2A bills are getting through, along with some necessary bureaucratic reform.

I drew ballot #359 for my precinct. There are two precincts in my small (but tiny) town, just outside the wire of The Peoples' Republik of AnnArbor. I asked of the turn-out at the other precinct. It was about the same (362 ballots).

So, for a small (but tiny) town of 9,000 turning out 700 voters in a single proposal, off-year election; & pissing all over the RINO Gennifer Snyder's tax shake-down, I consider this a win.

Yea, it really does illustrate the elastic nature of time-or time's rigidity, depending on how you want to look at it. She was born in 1930, which seems impossibly long ago to me, that means she was 36 when she was in Star Trek. Now, 36 doesn't seem all that old-and yet it's been more than a decade since I was 36. To cap it all off, consider this: I was born closer in time to Adolf Hitler being alive than I am now to Bush 41's presidency. Which is just toatlly WACK! Really? I mean, really? I was amazed the profiles were so close for a bolt action and a semi auto. Almost like someone made the guy designing the 49-56 match the 36.

412 Weft, did you spend time in Japan or Okinawa as an adult? All I remember of Japan was from when I was a kid from six to eight. This was 1958 to 1960. I remember that the adult women used to treat us very well, the men mostly ignored us but we had to treat them with respect, and the young boys were always up for a baseball game.
I'd like to do two things before I die. One is to do that Normandy to Berlin tour (you know which one I'm talking about) and the other is to go back and visit Japan, although the Japan I remember from being stationed at Tachikawa AFB would be vastly different than the Japan I remember as a kid.

414 Lets see. The Mas 49-56 would of first been accepted for service in 1949. The French were still very much recovering from the ravages of n*zi occupation and general devastation of WW2.

It would make sense that they would want to spend as little money as possible and use as many components of a already existing weapon.

A mash up if you will.

Taking another bite at that apple -- the thing that gets me is that things have been notably worse in my lifetime, and that they seemed like they were only going to keep getting better.....and, here we are getting the Same Ol' Shit again. Same Marxist malarkey, same rioting, same foreign shitholes begging for attention, same totalitarian claptrap.....

But we haven't yet gotten as bad as odd/even gas rationing, government price controls, sky-high marginal tax rates, anti-nuclear missile drills in Elementary Schools. Hell, 50 years ago 1/3 of all employees were in a union.....whether they wanted to be or not. When I was a kid, LA's air was so bad you sometimes couldn't see three houses down your street. The Cuyahoga caught fire 13 times between 1868 and 1969.

And then we got Ronaldus Maximus and thought things were pretty damned good and only getting better.....and now they're not, so we're all butthurt. But it isn't an intergenerational failure story, it isn't a trend or a historical inevitability, and it's not permanent. It's "we threw these bastards out once and things got so good we let ourselves forget how evil they are."

------
And therein lies the problem. Not only do we have the complete collapse of the Soviet Union, we have far too many examples of what socialist governments have failed at, with Britain, France, Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Italy leading the way. Youth unemployment above 25%, excessive government debt, crony capitalism, and we want to emulate that?
Britain recently retired her last aircraft carrier because they could no longer afford to keep her at sea. Her downfall came in 1944 with nationalized health care. And the Labor party took it downhill from there.
And we have a small minority of people here who think that being Red Octoberists is the greatest thing evah! And the sheeple just follow along. I fear for my younger friends and grandchildren.
I had a young friend that I used to bowl with that was ecstatic that Romney lost in the last election. He was on the verge of going permanent full time with Coors in Golden, he had been working as a contractor for a year. Good job, good pay. Less than a month after the election, he was let go. He didn't make the connection. I tried to tell him, but he was an Obamabot.

At this point in time, England, which at one time in history had the greatest naval fleet ever, cannot project air power over the ocean. If the Falklands were to happen now, Argentina would have won.
And there is no telling if those fleet carriers will actually be built. She (Queen Elizabeth) is already 2.115 billion pounds over budget and will not be operational (according to Wikipedia) until 2020.

My best friend (who was gay) used to believe that we make executions too soft, too easy. What he wanted was some clean psychological torture. The condemned was to be strapped to the gurney and knocked out. Now he might actually be killed. But they might cut off a finger/toe/leg/arm, revive him, and let him live on the Row some more, then do it all over again, taking off another piece of him, with the condemned never knowing when he'd actually die.

Not all gays are liberal pukes. His Dad (whose funeral I attended at Arlington), was a member of Adm. Arleigh Burke's 'Little Beaver' destroyer squadron in WWII. 489 Hat, the way I see it is this. After Stalin took power, he replaced ethnic minorities with ethnic Russians in the Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, and Georgia. Stalin was Georgian, not an ethnic Russian. And he was responsible for the Holodomor.
Vlad was the president when Russia invaded Georgia. Vlad has been the president who invaded the Ukraine and seized Crimea.
Belarus is pro Soviet, and I use the term Soviet, because it feels to be the most correct. The same for some segments of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The ethnic Russians would clamor for reunion with the old Soviet state.
Vlad is ex KGB, he served the Soviet State, and wouldn't mind if it reappeared, especially with him in charge.
Georgia has had territory seized by the Soviets. It hasn't been completely overrun, but it is threatened.
Poland finally threw off the yoke of Soviet oppression, and the Soviet Union finally fell.
Merkel was raised in East Germany. I would eventually have to ask if her allegiance was to Germany, or the old East German establishment. It would really matter.

Doesn't much matter -- they have so much nuclear fuel/fission products sloshing around that they could invent warheads from rounding errors. You may recall the big whoop-te-do about Iraq seeking yellowcake in Niger (the Plame fiasco) -- the control points are supposed to be availability of raw material and the ability to process it. If you're generating 75% of your electricity with nukes, you have ample raw material around and ample processing opportunities. Even though "standard" fission bombs have been made with U-235 (which requires high levels of isotopic enrichment [gas centrifuges -- PITA] to get the U-238 out) and Plutonium (which can be chemically separated from reactor "waste"), you could go for something wild like a Neptunium bomb.

Neptunium bomb would require even greater separation than uranium. The main benefit would be that the amount of fissionable material would be very very small.

Nuclear hand-grenades have been developed using Np.

Californium would require even less material. We're talking pocket nuke territory here.

But at that point you will have needed massive infrastructure to get it and continuously resupply to maintain levels. Aside from the U.S, I could seen Russia, and perhaps even China and India developing this.

The point being that having a whole bunch of reactors bubbling away would let you do a whole lot of diversion and/or "cookin' a batch". France has 59 power-generating reactors, compared to 99 in the US (which has five times the population). They've got the massive infrastructure.

And, I should note -- there's separation and separation and separation. Isotopic separation is the bad bitch -- chemical separation is easy-peasy do-it-in-your-kitchen-sink stuff.

If you're France, you have to have the gear to make reactor-grade U-235. You can dose U-238 to Pu-239 if you regularly run a reactor, and chemically separate it. If you run it right, you won't get too much isotopic contamination and you'll get weapons-grade Pu without that much of a hassle -- because, remember, you've already got a bunch of centrifuges just to make the U reactor-grade.

Except that popping a nuke on someone -- even a Davy Crockett or nuclear hand grenade -- is a phase-change in international relations. Instead, you're going to see more Ukraine/Georgia bullshit -- nip off a piece and double-dog-dare anyone to escalate. And the wildcards for that scenario are Germany and, to a lesser extent, Poland. They both well know The Bear is out there, and what it means if the Baltics or the Czechs or Romania gets the squeeze. They're the ones who will make the call -- by the time it becomes a French nuke issue, it'll be WWIII.

If that's true, maybe it will be helpful since Notre Dame Cathedral will be turned into a mosqueat some pointin the future. Westminster Abbey, too.

Still, how many do they have at the ready, and what is their will to do more in a nuke-war environment?

They are the only thing stopping Russia from blitzing Europe.

"The amateurs discuss tactics; the professionals discuss logistics." -- Napoleon Bonaparte

The only thing that stops Russia from blitzing Europe is that Russia has an economy slightly smaller than Canada's and slightly bigger than Spain's.....and it has to go through the larger economies of France, Germany, Italy, and the UK to sweep Europe. It may well sack Europe -- but if it knew how to run things, it wouldn't be lagging.

It's certainly been hinted at by Indian, Pakistani, North Korean, and the prospect of Iranian nukes.....but we're not quite there yet. You won't be able to mistake it when it gets here, though -- the planet will likely lose a billion people in the second 24 hours (the first 24 will be "did that really happen?").

History is filled with Europe being invaded from the East by forces with far less sophistication and economic development.

Economic potential for war is meaningless if you get swamped rapidly.

564 It is no wonder that people became hermits, in those good old days, instead of staying in town and suffering through the wondrous aromas and sticky footsteps that must have been present everywhere. It seems kind of shameful that indoor plumbing and clean water still have not arrived everywhere on Earth. I guess though, that as long as we allow filthy bastards to live and chart the course of humanity, that we'll just have to keep on trudging through the shit, over and over again. A nice cleansing fire might be the best thing.

The reason that Europe has been sacked so many times is because they produce. They have long had cloth and leatherwork, wines and sculpture, tools and machinery, cheese and hams. Today, they make Lamborghinis and Porsches, Rolls-Royce turbojets and Bayer medicines, Nokia cellphones and IKEA-styled home furnishing.

And, just like in years gone by, they make a bunch of money by doing this and fail to protect it -- so some raider comes by, cleans 'em out, figures out that they can't run the money-making machinery, and clears out until they make more.
