Thursday Night ONT-Coercion Edition [Weirddave]

I've been open blogging here at AoS HQ for more than a year now. It started with an offhand comment in a thread about my tomato plants, whereupon Y-Not shanghaied me into the garden thread. I kind of grew from there, finding my niche with my Fundamental Concept threads, and generally enjoying being able to contribute to AoS.

Until now.

Yesterday, I came home to find that my house had been ransacked, and this picture was taped to the mirror in the foyer:

gundog.jpg

I never realized that Ace learned his business ethics from the Mafia. Please guys, don't hurt him, he's just a pup. I'll do as you say.

PUCK!

Tonight begins the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, unquestionably the greatest tournament in all of pro sports. 8 teams are left in the quest for the cup, but we all know there's only one that matters, and if I've timed this right, this ONT will drop right about the same time the puck drops in Anaheim. Duck soup is the dish of the day, and guess who the chefs are?

Flames.jpg

This is an admittedly unscientific observation, but just based upon what I've seen, it seems that as a general rule hockey players seem to be the nicest and most down to earth professional athletes of the big 4 sports. Here's a case in point: Alex Ovechkin. Before the season, he held a private skate event for a group of children with developmental disabilities. One of them, a ten year old girl with Down's Syndrome named Ann Schaab, asked him out on a date.

tirG4Bm.gif

Well, Ovi took her out on a date (to a Caps game). Afterward they ate sushi together. At the All-Star Game, Ovi spent all of his time lobbying to be either the MVP or the final selection of the fantasy draft. Both of those players win a Honda, and he told everyone who would listen that he "needed a car". Big joke, right? Ovi's got 7 cars already. He didn't win the car, but when Honda found out he had been trying so hard to win the car so he could donate it to Ann's special needs hockey team, a third car somehow materialized and Ovi was given the key. Ann was in the stands for game 7 of the Caps/Islanders series cheering her head off for her beloved Caps and their teddy bear of a star player. She even had a nifty playoff beard.

abeard.jpg

Ovechkin and the Caps may have been happy with their game 7 victory, but I'll bet Ann was happier than all of them put together. Read all about it here.

Apparently "Brazzers" is some kind of porn company. This website theorizes that you can make innocent pictures look dirty by adding their logo. YMMV

Anytime You Think You Can Cash a $368 Billion Check...Think Twice

Jeff Waters attempted to walk into Bank of America on Monday to cash the check for $368,000,000,000 (see above).

Jeff said all he wanted to do was open the best Italian restaurant ever.

"It's always been my dream to own the best Italian restaurant in the earth," Waters told police. "I'm 10% Italian. Cooking authentic Italian food is in my blood. I had planned to make the restaurant 80 million sq. feet and able to accommodated (sic) 30 million eaters at once, plus it was gonna be totally underwater so people could look at sharks while they ate."

Now that I think about it, I'm with Butters on toilet use. It would make a lot more sense to use toilets backwards.

The Most Popular Movie from Each State

movies in each.jpg

Three of the films include their location's name in the title: My Own Private Idaho, Nebraska and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, as in the District of Columbia. Perhaps the most on-the-nose title, however, is Nevada's Casino. What more could you expect of Las Vegas than a movie about its most precious resource?
The oldest film on the list is The Gold Rush, a 1925 Charlie Chaplin silent film set in Alaska. The newest film is, once again, Nebraska.
Only one film is the most popular in two states: Joel and Ethan Coen's Fargo, though the film's protagonist, played by Frances McDormand, is a police chief in Minnesota, not Fargo, North Dakota.

Someone Told Me it's All Happening at the Zoo

Yesterday, Wuhan Zoo Monkey caretaker Zhang Bangsheng unbelievably used his tongue to lick a small monkey's butt!
50-year-old Zhang Bangsheng used warm water to clean a small Francois' Leaf Monkey's buttocks, then began using his mouth to lick it, not stopping for over an hour, until the little monkey defecated a single peanut. Only after the peanut was defecated did Zhang Bangsheng laugh with satisfaction.

BALTIMORE

As many of you know, Baltimore is my hometown, and I'll probably have more to say about the riots during normal open blogger time this weekend, but for now, two things.

How a liberal's mind works.

Link goes to a fantastic interview with David Simon. Simon is the author of the book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, he also wrote and produced The Corner and The Wire. I can't recommend it enough if you want to get a handle on what things are like in Charm City. Anyhow, in this interview, Simon is detailing exactly how the Baltimore Police Department was wrecked by Martin O'Malley for his own personal political gain. Absolutely wrecked, and the result is what we saw this week. Anyhow, in the middle of all of this, what is a very damning recitation of all the despicable things Tommy Carcetti O'Malley did, actions that should by rights disqualify O'Mally for ANY elected position, including dog catcher, for any thinking person, Simon casually says this: "And, hey, if he's the Democratic nominee, I'm going to end up voting for him.". No pause to consider that the raw totalitarianism that Simon's been matter of factly recounting should horrify any American, no thought that the Republicans might nominate someone worth considering, just blind, reflexive, unthinking "Me vote Dem-o-crat". Modern Libs truly are mindless robots.

Baltimore mayor apologizes for 'thugs' comment

I'm sorry Madam Mayor, but I'm not going to let you walk this one back. Your apology was in response to Baltimore City Councilman Carl Stoke's demagoguery, claiming that "thug" was just a code word for "nigger". I refuse to buy into your racism.

"Thug" is the perfect word to describe those folks who rioted, because the word classifies them based upon their actions. The N-word classifies them based upon their skin tone. Decoupling thug from it's connotation-the actions of an individual- and draping it with the mantle of chance-someone's physical appearance -dehumanizes those people. It removes from them the basic human attributes of agency and will. The people who rioted, and looted, and burned, and attempted murder and committed violence are THUGS Madam Mayor. They are THUGS based upon the actions that they chose to voluntarily undertake. As much as you may wish to shield them from the responsibility of their own actions, I'm not buying it. They are not automatons, they are not zombies. They are human beings will complete will and agency over their actions, and I am going to judge them by those actions, and not by the color of their skin. To do otherwise would be racist.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by April 30, 1975, Saigon, Republic of South Vietnam

Saigon.jpg

For all the problems I have with the Republican Party, and they are myriad, this is one way that they are indisputably better than their traitorous Democrap colleagues. We've never seen a Republican Congress refuse to honor treaty obligations and surrender a hard won victory to the enemy for domestic political gain. First Vietnam, now Iraq and Afghanistan, I think it's safe to say that doing such is Democrat policy.

Follow me @weirddave0 on Twitter. One random person will win a pony just for following me between the 1st and 5th of May!*

OK Ace, I did it, I made an ONT, can I have my puppy back please? I miss rubbing his widdle tummy-wummy and watching his leggy-wegy kick.

32 The Deer Hunter is the most popular in PA? Oh. I've seen it a few times and I like it. A moody sad movie. I guess its popular in PA because the fictional town in it is based on a small steel town in Western PA (that probably still exists but minus the Steel mill). Lots of veterans in PA too. The actual steel town used was in West Virginia and the hunting sequences were shot in some national park in Washington. Not sure why. No shortages of hunting locations in PA.

To be clear, MLK's injunction about judging a man by the content of his character rather than the color of his skin cuts both ways: having black skin doesn't mean you can't have a shitty character for which the appelation "thug" is appropriate.

True. He's also a terrific reporter, and has spent the last 20 years more or less embedded with the BCPD. The interview if factual, not political. One source says the torpedo that killed the cruiser on 13 Nov had been fired by US forces to finish off the mortally stricken heavy cruiser USS San Francisco. About 140 went into the water but only 10 were pulled out.

TAKE TWO:
@TruthRevoltOrg in turmoil, Shapiro resigns, writers laid off:
http://t.co/l8mT0wHu9Y

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro has resigned as editor-in-chief of TruthRevolt, a non-profit news website site that he co-founded just two years ago.

Shapiro's departure from the young media group, which he launched in 2013 along with David Horowitz of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, comes amid the group's decision to let go of many of its writers — and as Horowitz is hitting back against widespread rumors that the site is sinking.

Although Shapiro's name is prominently displayed on the website's homepage, it is nevertheless a "project of the David Horowitz Freedom Center." Horowitz himself owns the site.

"I am no longer associated with [TruthRevolt] and it's a project of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, fully owned and operated by them," Shapiro told the Washington Examiner's media desk when asked about the future of the website. "What David Horowitz chooses to do with the site after my resignation is out of my purview."

Shapiro told the Examiner that he formally resigned last week, but held off announcing it until he and others involved had time to work out his exit.

He said that he's focused right now on an upcoming project for the 2016 presidential election, adding that his exit from TruthRevolt has freed him from the restrictions of the group's non-profit status.

"There's only so much that you can do with a 501(c)(3)," he said.

Since January, at least 10 writers have been cut loose, Shapiro told the Examiner.

So there's a huge festival in our little town this weekend. Tonight was the kickoff with a parade. Eldest is in the parade due to being on the company dance team. So I walk the parade, along with several other parents, because I simply don't trust my kid not to go missing.

Is it wrong that I had a small mtn dew bottle with booze in it that I was taking hits off of during the parade?

But there's been a lot of new conservative media in recent years. Maybe the market is saturated.

Horowitz is saying TruthRevolt is not closing even though the founder quite and most of the writers have been fired.

Meanwhile Shapiro is on twitter strongly implying that he's starting some new venture and bringing the big name talent with him.

250 re: 368 billion dollar check

Many years ago on the intarwebs, there was the tale of a man who received some physical mail spam about some sort of lottery or something that included a fake $98 million check. He looked closely at the check and decided that it looked pretty real; it had an account number, etc. etc.

So he decided to deposit it.

He figured he couldn't get away with putting it past a human teller, so he shoved the thing in ATM.

Hilarity ensued.

As I recall, the company that sent the spam had messed up by putting it an actual account number on it. A few days later, $98 million showed up in his account. He had a cashier's check made and stuffed it in his safe deposit box.

Several days later, the bank wanted its money back.

A quick google didn't turn up the story, but it was quite famous back in the day.

OK, the monkey's butt story -- it's old. And what you don't get is the context. The monkey is an endangered species, it's underage and its mom rejected it, and it wasn't supposed to get peanuts yet 'cause it wasn't big enough to handle 'em. And the keeper was going to be sent to a lifetime post as a Gobi Desert dust inspector if the monkey croaked, likely along with anyone within three degrees of consanguity. So he researched what mother monkeys do with their troublesome kids' digestive problems and did likewise.

It's not like he spooled this up on his CD player -- http://tinyurl.com/mdsdw2x

Fair enough. It's hard to defend "Signs", I just like it. Gibson and Phoenix were really, really good in it. I was very impressed by Gibson in it. Good use of tension and suspense in "Signs" and very well shot (Though I suspect his DP had a lot to do with the style os his earlier flicks). "Sixth Sense" didn't do it for me. Guessed the setup pretty quickly and found it fairly tedious.

I keep wanting to build an analog pressure gauge that I saw in a gallery of soviet bomb-shelter pics. You take a piece of clear plastic and rout out arough U that starts with a chamber near the right edge, goes vertically down, rises diagonally leftward for a bit, then goes vertically up a short bit into another chamber at the same height as the first. You then glue a clear piece of the same plastic on the front.

The only moving part is some fluid that doesn't evaporate (much) that isn't clear. Red-tinted glycerin is about right. The idea is that you put it with the longer vertical section on the higher-pressure side of two pressures you want to compare. If the pressure differential gets to be too much, the fluid fills one of the chambers and remaining pressure bubbles freely. To "set", merely disconnect both ends.

In my case, I could run a tube to the region right before the air handler but after both filters as the low pressure end, then run the high pressure end to regular hallway air, and it would give me a graphic display of how clogged my filters were. That way, it wouldn't be based on a calendar and would be more accurate as to the effects on system performance.

Short answer: sneeze.

Longer (and less jokey) answer -- since childhood, I've had serious allergies in the last part of October and the first part of June. Other than that, I could be dusted in pollen until I'm totally yellow and have no problems -- but that doesn't mean I want it all over my house. The cheap prefilter/ESP system doesn't cost a whole lot and really cleans things up -- and I have to run internal fans anyway because otherwise the West end of the house would be miserable every afternoon.

That does look very nice -- the reason I was thinking of building the analog liquid one was to give it an "arts-and-crafts" touch. If I were looking to do it seriously, I'd use an electronic sensor and network it in. That way I could graph the results.

We will probably spin the AC about 15 times this year. We only did it tonight because the outside temperature is holding high, not because it peaked high. The house was very livable for 50 years with no AC at all. So, no, we don't worry much about the condensate pan....it spends most of its time quite dry.

Tomorrow's supposed to hit 65 degrees by 10 pm, so we probably will be relying more on the whole-house fan than the AC. It's just that it currently is 72, and two hours ago it was 80, and the fiancee needs to function on NC time tomorrow.

Maybe I can use one of the gas struts under my tractor seat?

I give M.Night a pass on Airbender simply because I don't think he had any power in it. It seemed he was attached as director by the studio in order to try to milk his name but I don't think he had any power in it.

And After Earth was Will Smith's vanity project and so I put that all on him, again I think M.Night knew he was there just so "Directed by Will Smith" wasn't something that was actually on the movie poster and so M.Night traded on the remaining embers of his fame for one last shot at a pay check with a star that might be able to rekindle M.Night's career.

Lady in the Water and The Happening- those are all on him and his ego.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man.
Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded -- here and there, now and
then -- are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently
despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all
right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from
creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the
people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as "bad luck."

No, the problem is that RAH was talking about real, honest-to-god, actual poverty. The kind where you shit in designated holes-in-the-ground (outhouses) and occasionally eat squirrel. That's how my paternal grandfather lived -- my dad and uncle went back and put in gas heat in (IIRC) 1971 -- and went back to install indoor plumbing in 1973.

All the folks that think that meat comes wrapped in a bag or on a plastic-sealed tray are in for an education.....and that doesn't even start to address the millions who have never cooked themselves a meal.

Chris Matthews lamented that there's no summer work programs. Yes, give them a job and pay them just to show up(possibly on time). First, they need to learn how to read, write, speak, dress, etc. Why not just pay them to go to summer school and base their pay on academic performance, provided the teachers don't fix the grades ala Atlanta, GA.

OK, I don't know just changing names is all that was wrong with Airbender but if he had more power than that then yeah, that is on him. But I still can't put anywhere near that much blame on him for AE. He may have been 'co-writer' but in a vanity project that is like being the General Manager under Jerry Jones- a title with no power to do anything that the guy in charge doesn't want and often just there to be the yes man for decisions the ego in charge has already committed itself to.

625 Mindless robots.

I encountered that twice tonight. I have a ballot here for things I don't care that much about except mayor, then clerk, a few other things, not many, only four categories. So I looked for Republicans. Looked up each name individually. I marked a faint x by Democrats, a faint ? by independent the cop out designation, and voted for Republican, except for the largest category that didn't have one. Left that blank. Uck'emfay, let 'em duke it out amongst themselves.

Why? To counteract the nonsense of "He's the Democrat candidate so that's a no-brainer for me" type comments I read continuously. And I hate that, but that's the way it is. Their incredible stupidity that leads to supporting straight up criminal activity must be countered somehow and this is it. I must vote stupidly too. To counteract stupid little sister's reliably stupid and myopic vote. Such is the stupid situation created by catch basin for all troubled souls, Democrat Party. And it is ever thus.

693 I have a feeling that if I start with the weekly Ziegfeld Girl, it will produce a morning thread. So let's see.

Here is Mildred Harris:

http://goo.gl/OF5lP2

The "Doctor Macro" picture site lists her as a Ziegfeld Girl, but I can't find any definite dates for her tenure with the Follies. It may have been in the late 1920s after talking movies came in (she was one of many whose careers in sound never really took off), but don't quote me.

She was a popular child actress in the 'teens and a well-regarded leading lady in the 1920s, before sound, working wih leading men such as Lionel Barrymore and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.

In 1918, the 16-year old Harris met Charlie Chaplin, whom, as I've noed before, had a predilection for young girls. The two had a false pregnancy scare and married in October of that year. She subsequently did become pregnant by the Little Tramp, but the child - Charles Chaplin, Jr. - died at the age of hree days. In 1920, she filed for divorce, citing mental cruelty, and Chaplin fired back, accusing her of having an affair with the actress Alla Nazimova. The divorce became final in November of 1920.

Harris' later career consisted mainly of cameo roles and bit parts, mainly through the efforts of her former director C.B. DeMille. Her pictures are rarely screened today, but, in an ironic twist, she - like fellow one-time silent star Clara Kimball Young - would find immortality with the Three Stooges, playing a temperamental star in their 1936 short Movie Maniacs:

694 Good Morning Morons. Today is Friday, May 01, 2015 and is a traditional holiday known as May Day. Originally it was a celebration of spring with dancing around the "May Pole". However in modern times the communists have usurped that celebration with their own version to celebrate the Haymarket Riot in Chicago, which actually occurred on May 4th. Only a communist would celebrate a riot (which they caused BTW by throwing a dynamite bomb at police). I suppose down the road somewhere these black communists who are causing all the modern riots across the nation will pick some traditional holiday to celebrate torching their neighborhoods and looting. Probably call it Hands Up Don't Shoot Day and hold it on July 4th.

Note also that due to thousands of labor laws and regulations there are very few US flagged vessels anymore. So this announcement is just a little bit of propaganda to take the heat off of Obama.

Yes more "honest government" from our betters in the Choom administration. Make sure the FEC is overrun with partisan Democrats. Another organization along with the NLRB that needs to be abolished because when lawless Democrats (giving the honest .5% a bad name) are in charge the commission becomes a criminal enterprise instead of an enforcer of the law. Re: "...They are human beings will complete will and agency over..."

I don't think you realize how much stupid little typos and editing errors distract from the meat of your blog entries. They make you look like you can't be bothered or are in more of a hurry to be heard and get first attention than to be correct and say something useful.
Of course no one misunderstands your message because of these, but that's not the point here. The quality otherwise of your entries is worth the extra effort needed to get the verbiage correct, I think.
