34 I'm reminded of the story of a parent who got a note sent home with his kid, saying something to the effect of "we request that you send healthy food as your child's lunch" and a signature block. The parent wrote "request denied" and didn't sign it.

My kid's school has a peanut-free zone, but fortunately no lunch police...yet. One of the PTA drones did threaten to start something like that (she said it "wasn't fair" that some kids had certain things in their lunches), but I concern trolled her and said the negative publicity of the PTA policing lunches probably wasn't worth the effort.

43 Okay, I know the Baltimore situation been flogged to the point of ridiculous but...

Can somebody explain to me why there was such praise among the media and on-line (including here at this site) for the mother who was caught on video berating her teenage son for wearing the hoody as he was on his way to 'storm the castle'. She was surely not demonstrating good parenting skills and he sure wasn't responding to what she was saying. She cut loose with a string of F-bombs and other profanity as she was ineffectually smacking the kid who just glared at her and walked away. She told the reporter she was a single mom with six kids (five girls and the one boy). No mention of the father(s). It is our job as adults to prepare our children to become adults. I didn't get that sense from the video. I suppose she should get credit for trying to keep him away from the riot, but I have to wonder if a foundation of respect and decency has been instilled in this young man from an early age? And if not, why not? That is the nub of the problem, IMHO.

DISCLAIMER: I recognize that conclusions drawn from a short internet video can be wrong. Still, these are the questions that occurred to me.

51 On the NC thing.

I will say that, especially in the hard sciences, research can be near impossible with a 4/4 teaching load.

The problem is (and I've seen this before) is that if you build in exemptions they'll get abused to all hell.

I am familiar with someone who was a student in a small department that had mandated teaching loads. But various administrative roles could be substituted for teaching. So the shitty teachers jockied themselves to be administrators (namely program director) and ran the program into the ground via shitty admissions.

So if you do this wrong, (which the legislature will probably do, because they'll have to cater to the researchers who bring in that sweet sweet phrama money).
If you do it wrong, all you'll do is amplify the shitty administrator problem by making all the lazy fuckwads jockey for administration positions.

A local charity around here got huge news kudos because it gave out lunches to kids during the summer to replace the school lunch program. Tons of lunches and only 2-3 people running the whole thing.

They bragged they were able to get the cost of lunch down to something fairly low ($1? I forget the number.)

I raised a lot of eyebrows when I said "wouldn't it be more useful to teach the parents how they managed to get costs down that low?"

She didn't leave him in the streets to destroy other people's property or throw stuff at cops. That makes her mother of the freaking century in her neighborhood.

That being said, it did occur to me that that particular youth needed a father who would have cold-cocked him if he was even thinking about being defiant and walking away.

Question for the Horde. When those SNAP/WIC/WTF benefits are calculated, is it on the basis of three meals per day? I'd like representatives of the various school lunch/welfare programs to explain what looks like a little double dipping here.

Everyone looked down on home-ec, when I was a kid because your mom was supposed to teach that, and later, because it was demeaning to young women.

162 Many said a mandated 4/4 course load -- four courses per semester -- would make it impossible to focus on their research and other responsibilities.

From the NC "Make Professors teach" article.

But here's the problem: unless I'm missing something, it didn't say anything about "a mandated 4/4 course load." It simply stated that they had to teach 8 courses per year.

So, they could front-load that with 5 courses in fall, and maybe one over the winter-mester. That's 6 of the 8. One in Spring, and one in one of the Summer semesters (most universities in TX, at least, have two Summer semesters each year), and Oversized Violin: they've got their 8 courses AND plenty of time for research. Heck. They could team up and do research together, and one professor could front load (as outlined above) and the other could back load (with only 1 course in Fall) and then the research could still go on all year!

Bean tacos. I practically grew up on the damned things, still make 'em a couple of times a month. Cheap but tasty eats. Canned refried beans, corn tortillas, some oil in the pan. Shredded cheese, tomatoes, salsa. Although I prefer it, I rarely use lettuce, because I'm usually cooking for one. Less hassle, waste.

Probably costs about $3-4 to feed a family of four.

No offense dude, but 5 courses a semester is a lot more work than it sounds like, especially if they're huge lecture courses.

On the low end, I'd assume 3 hours/week of work for every credit hour of course (plus the classroom time.)

Given a typical 3 credit course you're looking at 60 hours right there on the low end.

And biologists can't just put research on hold until the spring.

And many places won't let you teach a summer course just on a whim. They tend to have a set offering and if you don't fit that (say you're an molecular geneticist but they only teach zoology during the summer) you're pretty much hosed.

Listen, I'm all for overhauling the system, it's a mess. But this is a bad way to do it.

A few things could do (besides getting rid of tenure)
1) Require people to cover their salaries. This is already common in STEM, you get 5% hard money for your salary, and you make the rest up with grants, or you starve. Tenure or not. A similar system could be in place where you can "cover your salary" with teaching loads.
2) Recognize a distinction between "research faculty" and "teaching faculty." Make it formal. Make people who do both have dual appointments (rather than the mess it is now.)

It would be comical if it wasn't for the fact that they felt they needed to cave. I mean, it's a dumb idea to begin with, people standing around waiting for some slogan on a beer bottle to tell them what to do. So yeah, one of the bottles says "a night without the word 'no'" or something like that. After all, beer = rape, with or without suggestions from your bottle, so with it must mean double rape!

I'll take your word on it, but I've seen little evidence of that (re: prep-time). A TA for grading papers, re-use lesson plans across multiple years, (I happen to know this happens), and I'm willing to bet that prep time goes way down.

But if that's not reasonable, then rather than just screaming "that's not fair!" the professors need to say, "Look, that's just not going to work- how about we work together to find something that will?"

But, of course, no one in education (Universities or public schools) wants to do that, because then they couldn't complain about whatever plan was created.

We see that all the time here in TX. On the one hand, the Leg says, "We're looking at ways to fix school funding," or "We're looking at ways to fix testing requirements" or whatever. And the *only* thing the teacher's associations (like Unions, but without the clout) ever come up with is "MOAR MUNNY!"

Well, *that's* not going to fly, so the Legislature comes up with something else and the teachers throw a hissy-fit.

If they would accept the reality that the people of TX are not going to write them a blank check, they could go to their legislators with reasonable suggestions and *those* might go through. But then when that still turned out to be more work, or the real world inserted itself in some other way, they wouldn't be able to complain- because they'd be at least partly responsible for the setup.

232 This was what I was about to suggest. They're
called "professors" for a reason. They exist to teach, not to do
research. If you want to be a big research university, fine...hire
dedicated research faculty. People who consider teaching to be of
secondary importance to their real job of conducting research should be
calling themselves professors. My $0.02, for what it's worth.

Posted by: RedMindBlueState at April 29, 2015 09:56 AM (h4vJk)

They'll tell you straight up, they live by the "publish or perish" motto. Which not only means that teaching is secondary to them, but it also means a shedload of creppy research gets published.

Tenure based more or less on research is the worst thing ever.

Big schools can handle it because they tend to use adjuncts to teach and pay for their research staff with grants/contracts.

But mid range schools do stupid shit. I used to joke that the biochem department at my alma mater was in trouble because all the researchers got tenure.
Many were all shit teachers, some of whom openly admitted hating being in the classroom, but being a midrange (but still Tier 1 research institution) there wasn't much of a budget for teaching faculty.

It was a fucking mess.

As I said above though, the idea NC has is OK, but the implementation will be fucked up and make things worse.

And that's how my house works today. I will cook one meal. If I happen to know I'm cooking something that a) I love AND b) my kids absolutely won't appreciate, then I may crack open some canned pasta or something for them while my wife and I eat something actually good.

Firstly, we're talking about universities here, Grade School and high school has it's own set of problems.

Secondly, I'm not sure I like a legislative solution to the college problem either.
Sure this probably only applies to state funded colleges, but still, in any given system there are wildly divergent school models.
Mizzou is way different from UMSL, different from UM-Rolla (or whatever they call it now.)

The 4/4 rule *might* be OK for UMSL (a largely commuter school with limited research.)
It'd be a minor inconvenience for Mizzou (a typical large state school with a medical and vet program.)

It'd be a fucking mess for Rolla which is an engineering school where you want your professors to spend shit tons of time either in the lab or working on contracts because a) that's how they stay current and b) that's how you get contacts to get a job.

And yes, I know prep plans get reused, I do it myself. But a good teacher is going to spend time giving feedback. So even for my 2 credit online course, I spent about 4 hours a week grading.

Now that can be reduced, and every course is different (maybe my math teacher spends less time tweaking the course since calc doesn't change.)

As I said, something needs to be fixed, it's miserably broken. I'm not sure this is the right approach.

For my part I at least know my place: I'll either teach or do some other service to a university (IRB, other research administration, etc.) Or I'll find external funding.

296 "I don't resent okra, I feel sorry for it, but I'm not going to eat it."

Okra don't get no respect. Once I was escorting a Danish customer through the plant. At lunchtime we went to the cafeteria. When he saw the fried okra he was visibly repulsed. I said, "Are you not familiar with okra?" He replied in his perfect English, "Oh yes--we have okra, but we don't eat it. We make soap with it."

I'm a little surprised to hear that. The professors I had in college (and friends who got phd's after college and went back to teach) seemed to have very.... minimalist schedules.

1-3 classes per semester, maybe one assigned (graded) essay, everything else was done online (and graded online without input from the prof).

My favorite college professor taught one 3 credit hour class a semester. He was a department head in the business school. He used to brag to me about how he worked less than 3 hours a week, including commuting time.

Never had a single graded assignment or anything from him. He also didnt believe in lesson planning -- he'd just show up and talk about whatever was on his mind.

Reason I liked him so much is because he clearly did not give a fuck about his job or students or educating or anything else. I admire people who have zero fucks to give.

304 UNC would be severely crippled as a research institution... Time for class prep and the rest is not an easy thing to do. Then there's the shedding of the professorship because there isn't any plausible way to have that many courses available. My graduate program had 17 profs when I graduated. They're at 20 now. No way are they going to offer 80 classes unless they're reformulating intro statistics to satisfy requirements. Which would be an ugly thing because not all the professors speak English well enough for a newly minted college student to understand. (Trust me, I've had students complain about their TAs who speak nearly flawless English.)

Meanwhile all that time spent on courses is less time spent on research and advising and the other university management nonsense.

The problem with the universities is not that they're not dedicated enough to instruction and have too much time to waste to nonsense. The problem is we've enabled the nonsense by enshrining the university as a social organ.

Trust me, teaching mandates won't get rid of the crazy liberal stuff. Acolytes will just write less papers and books... The lib arts crazies will still find time to be crazy.

stir to get them warm.

Serve.

I don't know, he didn't seem to be atypical.

I'd usually see the professors at the bars before the students.

Maybe the school I went to was atypical though. Not a lot of researchin' going on there. Just fleecing rich kids who weren't smart enough to go to a "good" private college (I had a scholarship and was a transfer student, long story).

Really seemed like a great gig. But I remember talking to an adjunct professor -- she taught at 4 different colleges which were, uh, sort of close? but not really... had a horrific schedule and was working 80 hours a week and barely making enough money for the rent.

While the tenured professors were at happy hour at 4:30 every day, and rarely had a class before 10 am.

379 Okay, I'll type it in manually. Apparently there's some problem with copy/paste in the recipe. First, the ingredients:

1 sleeve graham crackers (I use cinnamon flavored, but any flavor should be fine)
6 tbsp of butter, melted (unsalted)
2 tbsp sugar
2-1/2 lbs (5 packages) cream cheese, softened to room temperature
1/8 tsp. salt
1-1/2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons real vanilla extract (I use Mexican vanilla, but anything not fake will work)
2 teaspoons lemon juice (fresh or bottled)
1/3 cup sour cream
6 eggs
2 egg yolks

And now the directions:

Lightly grease a 9-inch springform pan (preferably non-stick) or line the bottom with foil

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Finely crush sleeve of graham crackers

Mix graham cracker crumbs with sugar and 5-1/2 tbsp of the butter with a fork until crumbly (reserve remaining butter for springform pan)

Press the crumsb into the bottom of the prepared pan and bake for 13 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool while you prepare the filling.

Brush sides of the springform pan with remaining melted butter generously after the crust has cooled.

Turn oven up to 500 degrees.

In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese for about 2 minutes, to get out most of the big lumps, with the salt. Add the sugar in thirds, beating after each addition; scrap down the sides of the bowl. Beat for about one minute after each addition.

Add the sour cream, lemon juice and vanilla. Mix well.

Add the eggs two at a time, beating well after each addition, including the two extra yolks.

Pour into cooled crust and place springform pan on a lipped baking sheet in case there is spillover.

Bake at 500 degrees for about 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 200 degrees.

DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN DOOR!!!!.

Bake 90 minutes.

Remove from oven and cool for five minutes on wire rack.

Run knife gently around the outer edge of the cheesecake. This detaches it from the sides of the pan and helps prevent cracking as the cheesecake cools.

Allow to cool for 3 hours at room temperature.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours.

Best served within 30 minutes after it comes out of the fridge.

And besides, the PRs do not really want statehood.

Yeah PR would be stupid to become a state.

Plus if they became a state, they'd be BY FAR the poorest state in the country. Mississippi looks at PR an says, "shit those people are poor." I think the annual family income is like $14k compared to Mississippis $32k or whatever (those numbers are from memory, so they're probably not right, but the proportion is)

But the guy who was droppin n bombs said to the white anchorette, "would you call your kid a thug if he did thinks you didnt expect" or something and she said "uh yeah, I'd hope I would."

Silly.

But what word should we use to describe whilin' yutes? Or is the position of the "black community" that these whilin' yutes represent all black children and that their behavior is not abnormal?

Got castigated, absolutely slammed for it, by the SJW thugs. Because kids that normally get school lunch could not go to school so they missed out on the free lunch. The basic memo was pigs eat while children starve! Will no one think of the children!! I think local churches helped feed the kids in the meantime whose parents couldn't feed them.

498 The may have found that Bumblebee did not sufficiently train the dead worker on the necessity of and how to keep the oven off line while they were inside. They may have thought they were only going to be a few minutes and no one else was around (which is when this sort of thing occurs) when they went in.

Training in and requiring the use of lock out safety systems is the responsibility of the employer. The other workers apparently bypassed or didn't double check the vessel before loading and activating it.

Maybe the worker went in there to hide while catching some zzzz's. It's been known to happen like that on other types of industrial accidents.

Someone or more were not doing what they were supposed to do.

Since the worker is dead, their penalty is final.

Stupidity or laziness will get you killed. Or a trip to jail.

When I was a boy and would ride with Father Poppins, we would always stop at a DD just over the border in Salem NH. So it amuses me when I see DD today offering all sorts of breakfast sandwiches cooked in a microwave, and I think, "You were doing breakfast 40 years ago! Why didn't you just keep it that way?"

I've mentioned this before, but...had a Lefty friend who taught kindergarten in a poor section of Denver (she chose to - wanted to help the less fortunate). The school provided free breakfast. Most parents couldn't be bothered to bring the kids in before class in order to receive free breakfast. Heck, most parents couldn't be bothered to change their kids out of pjs before dropping them off. And no, they weren't getting breakfast at home. It's like if you give something away for free it's treated as if it's worth nothing.

574 Late entry re professorial teaching loads: teaching load should depend critically on the nature of the institution. At a glorified high school, sure; a couple of courses per semester is fair enough. At a major league research university, it's unreasonable, especially for disciplines that focus on research (STEM in particular, not so much English) and that as a consequence bring in most of the operating funds for the university (through overheads on grants and research contracts with corporations; again STEM in particular, not so much English).

People need to realize that in major research universities faculty in STEM subjects are not like high school teachers. They're essentially hired to do research, and secondarily have to teach some and do administrative work. Most of them work their asses off. For example, when I was active in research, I worked seven days a week, and averaged 70 hours a week - and only taught one course at a time.

Keep in mind also that GDP is about 3.5% higher than it would have been reported prior to the fall of 2013 because they changed how GDP is measured in some pretty dodgy ways (counting RD spending as a direct contributor to GDP, for instance, rather than an intermediate factor of production as it had always been counted).
So that GDP figure should be a little worse than -3% if they were honestly reporting.

583 "North Carolina Legislature Is Considering Making Professors Actually Work For A Living"

This NC bill is absolutely insane.

1. There's nothing smart about having the government layer universities with even more arbitrary regulations.

2. The work load involved with teaching a course varies wildly across subjects and across undergrad/grad curriculum. For example a single 3 credit grad physics class with 10 students will be a much greater workload than a 4 credit freshmen physics course with 50 students. This of course says nothing about the relative workload of teaching 1 humanities course vs 1 engineering course vs etc.

3. Professors are expected to spend a huge amount of time on research. This is a fact of the modern major university, and if you don't understand it then you aren't in the place to be saying a damn thing on this issue.

584 "I'm Not Sure Why The Company Is Being Fined If The Employees Are Being Charged With Criminal Willful Violations"

It's such a horrific event they are going after every possible charge. It is possible that the employees could be found criminally negligent and the company fined for safety violations simply because two sets of considerations are in play. There does not need to be in injury to levy a fine for unsafe working conditions. The employees wouldn't be off the hook for their actions necessarily. The employees could raise a defense that the company is really the responsible one, etc, but for now, everything is being thrown at the wall.
