Morning Thread (4-29-2015)

Not to steal Ben's link dump thunder, but this is the only thing you need to read about Baltimore today: Riot-Plagued Baltimore Is a Catastrophe Entirely of the Democratic Party’s Own Making

Yes, Baltimore seems to have some police problems. But let us be clear about whose fecklessness and dishonesty we are talking about here: No Republican, and certainly no conservative, has left so much as a thumbprint on the public institutions of Baltimore in a generation. Baltimore’s police department is, like Detroit’s economy and Atlanta’s schools, the product of the progressive wing of the Democratic party enabled in no small part by black identity politics. This is entirely a left-wing project, and a Democratic-party project.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, April 29, 2015. On this day in 1992 we had riots in Los Angeles, California, following the acquittal of police officers charged with excessive force in the beating of Rodney King. Over the next three days 53 people were killed and hundreds of buildings were destroyed. This occurred because the MFM played endless loops of an edited beating to the public making it look like it was an unprovoked attack. The jury voted acquittal because they saw the whole unedited video. The MFM never did show the whole video and they should have been held accountable for those deaths. The feds got involved and convicted two of the cops on civil rights charges. After getting a crap-ton of money from the city of LA King finally got enough alcohol and drugs and drowned in his swimming pool.

Is there an idiot anywhere that expected this to be true? Of course the MFM called it a profit maker. But you know how they lie. The only things these loans were for was to generate cash for some crony pockets.

The left always wants the government "out of the bedroom" and "separation of church and state." I agree. The courts should stay the fuck out of the church and have nothing to do with marriage or any other so-called "social issue."

But if it advances the totalitarian agenda, then so be it.

95 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.

I've got a couple of stories today.

Here's one that the late Tony Randall told on himself: after WWII, the first acting job he got on Broadway was in the Katherine Cornell production of Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, playing the role of Scarus, a young Roman soldier who delivers news of the battle of Actium.

It so happened that legendary mogul David O. Selznick had seen the show and was impressed by Randall, not least because of his magnificent stage outfit. He sent for the actor, meeting him in a private suite at the exclusive Hampshire House hotel.

As Randall crossed an enormous living room to meet Selznick, he noticed that, without the benefit of a beautiful costume and stage makeup, Selznick's expression changed. Just as Randall got to the producer and offered his hand, Selznick snapped, "You're no dreamboat, Randall."

"John Derek got the part,"
Randall later recalled. "Maybe it was good that I wasn't a dreamboat. This way, I had to learn how to act. But for a while I was known along Broadway as 'No Dreamboat' Randall."

Here's a picture of the actress Marilyn Maxwell:

http://goo.gl/mQ2HO6

During the war, she was married, though she carried on an affair with Bob Hope.* It so happened that she was touring in a USO show when she caught the attention of a particularly amorous fellow performer (I don't know his name, so we'll call him Al). He kept trying to lure Maxwell in bed, but she would always push him away as you would a little child, laughing, "I'll let you know when, Al."

One day, the troupe was flying to their next engagement. One of the plane's engines conked out and the aircraft suddenly lurched into a dive.

"Al!" Maxwell yelled, "Now!"

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Maxwell's affair with Hope was so open that she was routinely called, "Mrs. Bob Hope." She also had a long-running affair with Frank Sinatra.

With his rap sheet for using and selling drugs he should have been safely behind bars, for good, years ago. I suspect the cops knew his rap sheet and decided to take him for the 'nickle ride' without seat belt. If one justice system fails, they had an alternative.

Senators on Tuesday blocked a push to require a final deal on Iran's nuclear program be submitted to the Senate as a treaty.

Senators voted 39-57 to reject Sen. Ron Johnson's (R-Wis.) amendment, which was subjected to a 60-vote threshold.

Nine Republicans voted against the amendment, including Sens. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.) and Johnny Isakson (Ga.). who are up for reelection in 2016.

Presidential hopeful Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.) supported the amendment, while his 2016 competitors Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.) Graham (R-SC), and Ted Cruz (Texas) didn't vote.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday. "When we look back on this Congress, with the possible exception of the Iran nuclear issue, putting America back in the trade business could be the biggest accomplishment," he told reporters.

McConnell said he was highly encouraged by the passage of Trade Promotion Authority out of the Finance Committee by a 20-6 vote last week, and pledged to bring it to the floor very soon. He argued fast-track authority does more than empower President Obama, something that has become a sticking point with conservative activists.

I've never read the Falco series. Oddly enough, for someone who is (supposedly) writing a mystery, I don't care for mystery novels very much. There has to be a unique hook to get me to read them. From what I understand, Wishart is much more down-to-earth and colloquial than Davis; his Marcus Corvinius novels have been described as "Raymond Chandler in Ancient Rome." He uses a lot of vulgarity and slang in his books, trying to give you the feel of people actually talking and not declaiming in pure Latin.

Chicken coop rentals are booming nationwide as residents in cities, suburbs and the countryside flock to the anti-factory, locally sourced food movement. Some families also rent fowl as an educational experience for their children.

Prices depend on the company, location and lease duration, but start around $150 per month. Most basic packages include two hens, a coop, feed and phone availability to answer questions. Birds can be returned early if things dont work out, and are available for adoption if things go well.

Yes. A Hollywood Harry Reid, IIRC. I'd have to do a little more research on him, though. Except for The Last Hurrah and It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, I've never been a tracy fan.

He also would regularly hole up in some out of the way motel, sit naked in a bathtub and drink, not moving even to go to the bathroom. He'd simply drink, stewing there in his own waste for days until he got sick of it and decided to finally clean up.

I see that as ridiculing the protesters. Chunk rocks at the police in riot gear, with shields, and the return fire on exposed bodies.

Yup. And I'm sure she believes it's all the fault of those gross socons who refused to pay for the women of Baltimore to kill the rioters in utero, but she might still be savvy enough to not say it flat out.

380 Grace Kelly was a notorious mattress-back.

I saw Hitchcock's "Rear Window" on the big screen a few weeks ago.

Grace Kelly played the love interest.

Dear Lord, was she hot. Seriously sexy.

And without flashing any flesh at all.

I can't imagine what it would have been like to suddenly gain her full attention and interest at a Hollywood party.

The secondary plot involved war-photographer Jimmy Stewart not wanting to get "tied down" to her-

which, shall we say, stretched credulity.

387 Yes, Bob we are in this together. As much as some can here get into the Protestant/Catholic slug matches we have the same Lord, Jesus Christ. And so, if they go after the Catholics and insist that they perform marriages for gays it's not going to stop there. Both groups will be told what to preach in their churches, and if hundreds thousands of Catholics head down to DC in protest I'll be one the Protestants down there with them. We just need to have a Dietrich Bonhoeffer -NO! not to plot against the life of the leader but to boldly speak out. An Oscar Romero would be good too.

They just passed a law here a few years ago to eliminate that. Kids have to go to a 10 hour class and get a permit now. The Doctors pushed it through. They tried to get it through before but the old gov kept vetoing it.
