ONT 4-29-15 : Space to Destroy edition [krakatoa]

Look, I know: It's not going to be easy following last nights ONT. That was just a brilliant bit of minimalism -- sort of an avante-'tard blend of Andy Warhol and Steven Wright.

All I have today are cheap insults and a pressing need for a shower that, while you won't be able to actually smell, will probably make its influence known in the lingering miasma that is tonight's ONT.

Maetenlock is still away on some "business" trip.

Which is to say he's up to his tits in cheap European vodka, unearned superior attitudes, burning cars, and gypsy ears.

Which is to further say: Just another Wednesday evening.

No telling how long he'll be gone. I've never trusted the guy's judgement to be honest -- I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he ended up sharing a set of Súrsaðir Hrútspungar with a bunch of degenerate icewops before it's all said and done.

You know what they say: once you go Súrsaðir, you never go... whatever, I'm not even going to try. I'm sure those shivering degenerates lament the lack of rhyming words in their frostbitten whores-tongue far more than I ever will.

Let's get on with it. Ace has started his journey over to the L.I.B. dark side. He's trying hard to find an easy exit, but let's face it: divorce is never pretty, and there's no way the petty little bitches that comprise the entirety of the professional left will do any less than demand far more than we would ever care to accede to in a sane world.

So while I applaud the concept of just being quit of it all, let's not pretend that even if an agreement could be hammered out, it's going to cost us a lot more than we likely can anticipate just yet.

Ah, yes, divorce . . . from the Latin word meaning to rip out a man's genitals through his wallet.~ Robin Williams

And it will still be worth it.

Why you ask?

Because we will have people like Floyd "Box Truck" Briggs.

I'll take ten of him any day over a hundred soft graduates of "higher" education.

Take today for instance. I made the mistake of offering a counterpoint to prevailing opinion on a sports board. Essentially some idiot on the internet said today would be another "4/16" at Virginia Tech, and the board exploded in righteous indignation, saying whoever did that must be found and prosecuted. To which I suggested it should give us all pause that we are to be prosecuted for such pidly things as a likely drunken post by some anonymous troll. Simple public shaming may be vastly preferable.

I was dealt with harshly by the Kommentariat. Most agreed I had broken the board rules by posting objectionable & offensive content notwithstanding the intercession of the board mod explicitly stating it was not offensive or otherwise awry of the board rules.

It shouldn't surprise me, given most the people on that board are either current or recent college grads, and are thoroughly steeped in the culture of waaah.

All of which goes very neatly with this timely ONN bit.

Idle question prompted by the headlines: Why does an artist need a kickstarter campaign to "reproduce" his old art? Don't get me wrong. I love me some old school D&D. But unless this guy is living out of Michael Moore's dumpster (don't fool yourself -- Fatty McQuadJowl doesn't leave any meat on the bones or Cheeto crumbs in the bag) I just have a hard time understanding why he needs a kickstarter campaign for spending time on what most people would call a "hobby".

This ONT brought to you by the tragedy of child actors.

Add some stuff here that is witty. Something about a fun ball, but try not to suggest the horde should play with your testicles no matter how much you want to. Maet has worked really hard to maintain some sense of decorum, despite the time he intends to spend debuaching himself and the local fauna at Hallgrímur's Randy Reindeer Ranch.

34 I expect that Jeff Dee kept getting asked about somehow restoring those old pieces of art that had been lost when TSR spiraled into decay and ruin. And I expect he kept answering, who the hell is going to pay me for that? Finally, someone invented Kickstarter.

I have no problem with him basically saying, if people are willing to pay me to redo art that's been lost, I am willing to spend the time on it, but if people are not willing to pay me, then I have better things to do.

It's not like my last job didn't involve getting paid to do quite a few things that were against my better judgment.

Wait till you see what happens if a Republican gets in as President.

The last 8 years of the 21st Century Depression and Kowtowing World Tour will turn out to have been all the fault of whoever occupies the office in Feb/2016.

Not only that but when steps are taken to reign in the catastrophic overspending, the collapse of the Health Care System, The Social Safety Net, the loss of what few Jobs are left, the nosedive on Wall Street, the Devaluation of the Dollar, the explosion of inflation, the sudden and unexpected climb in the unemployment rate, world war III and the Final Rolling Stones Tour will ALL be blamed on the GOP.

And frankly they'll deserve every bit of the criticism as they have aided an abetted the Felon In Office.

88 there is no neat geographical break - the cities in the red states are (mainly) blue and the rural areas in the blue states are (mainly) red.

Sure there is. Use the county-level election map. The US loses hardly any territory, and Socialist League of Cities can still have their fun.

Couldn't God, who is able to save one baby, prevent an earthquake from happening in the first place? And save countless other babies? Not to mention everybody else who died in the quake?

I frankly don't get the "God of miracles" thing.

Lived in a town in CT where they allow right turns on reds after a full stop.

The town traffic engineer apparently didn't like the law so he spent millions putting "No Turn On Red" signs on every damn light in town (that's 4 signs per light). No other town had as many. I mean it, EVERY LIGHT had that sign. Even piddly lights out in the middle of nowhere with little traffic or 3 way stops.

I always wanted to start something over that but moved away.

I believe Beck is right about a lot of things. We need to prepare (food, water, ammo, etc.). We need to have a good plan. Our plan should address 'things' turning to crap quickly. Because that's how it will happen. We didn't pay attention to Beck about the progressives and the progressives stole our national government. We damn well better pay attention to Beck about that planning thing because the end is just around the corner.

136 (Yikes, I just posted this in last night's thread by accident.)

Hey everybody. As you know, I got a job (and thanks for all your support!)... but am still looking for something closer/better paying.

Have an advice question for the horde. A "sequential resume" format just lists your jobs in the order you got (and left/lost) them, right? From your most recent to least?

Just got an email earlier about a job I sent my resume in, and got asked for a "sequential format" resume. Except mine already *is* in sequential format, EXCEPT for the fact that (I admit this is awkward) I've been hired twice by not just one former employer, but two of them.

So, I list them as follows on my resume:

ACE & CO. - Head Horde Herder
January 2007 to March 2008 *and* July 2001 to May 2003

OTHERBLOG CORPORATION - Apprentice Whippersnapper
September 2004 to September 2006 *and* July 1996 to June 2000

...now that I think about it, it can be kinda confusing. Still, I'd think that given everything else is listed sequentially (including these two, by the *most recent periods* I worked there), my experience list would make sense.

I dunno.

It really wasn't so long ago that I thought Beck was interesting but a bit extreme. Now I think he was understating the threat to what's left of the country.

I have now seen senior Republican Congresspersons sell out their constituents, I have seen an traitorous US president re-elected and then effectively being given the powers of an emperor, I have seen the US military disgraced by those in command (in both the officer corps and the civilian leadership), I have seen rioters being given carte blanche to destroy their towns with the help of salaried provocateurs, and I have heard my niece (an NYC resident) tell her mother that in the event of a nuclear event she will not be able to get out in time!

173 Bitter Clinger, 95% of the drive-in theaters in SoCal are gone. Last one still going that I know about is in Santa Fe Springs, I think near Interstate 5 (and they're only still open because they're constantly hosting swap meets).

The Los Altos drive-in that I believe you're reffering to, which was located right next to Worthington Ford on Bellflower Blvd, is long gone. Now a shopping center with a Kmart, Lowes, and the usual suspect fast food places. Nice but rarely very busy.

I don't buy into the "God of Miracles" thing either anymore. I just take that to mean that there are a lot of people undecided on matters of faith, applauding this, and looking for a miracle to help them make the decision to believe easily -- or maybe it's a sign that we have a lot of people on the receiving end of miracles that want to say so to encourage others towards faith.

My own thought on this is somewhere in the middle. I think maybe that God rarely intervenes Himself directly, and that most "miracles" are wrought by the prayers of ardent believers.

Good luck figuring all this out. If you do figure out something definitvely and confidently, let me know. I mean this sincerely.

So true. Also, yielding whilst making a left turn just isn't a thing here. And stop signs are looked at mostly as suggestions, and not particularly good ones. Speed limits? Pffft. 45 in a 70? Cool. 55 through a residential neighborhood? No problem.

I almost prefer the non-stop aggressiveness of city driving. At least then, you know the rules: highways, it's every man for himself, the weak get trampled. Neighborhoods, 25 means 25.

OK I might get torn to pieces for this. I know for sure I would some other places.

They pulled a baby alive out of the rubble in Nepal. Twitter going crazy over the "miracle." Which implies divine intervention.

Couldn't
God, who is able to save one baby, prevent an earthquake from happening
in the first place? And save countless other babies? Not to mention
everybody else who died in the quake?

I frankly don't get the "God of miracles" thing.

I'll start by saying that while I have experienced what I consider miracles first hand, as in someone's body being healed in a way that I was able to feel with my hand as it happened, I share your disdain for referring to events like that as miracles, per se.

I take a pretty Arminian view of the way God and Man interact in this world, and hold that sin and death came here at our own choosing. (I would note that in Genesis when God announces the consequences of the fall to Adam, Eve, and Satan, He doesn't duck His own part). So it's a fallen world, and we are told that all of creation is suffering under the effects of that fall.

To grossly simplify my view, there is something of the way God created the world that requires Him to intervene in limited ways in order for us to truly have free will. And not just us, but other created beings as well. All those choices have impact, and if they don't have impact, then we aren't really exercising free will. I get that a natural disaster is a different category than allowing the consequences of a single actor to have effect, but not entirely, if they are the ongoing effect of sin entering the world through the choice of a single actor.

The if and when of how God does intervene is still mysterious to me, even having experienced it. But I see a world caught in a spiritual war in which God does still contend and does still save, and where I don't have enough information to make a judgement as to why or why not in any given instance. And I still think that some events are circumstantial, so that arguing a miracle for something that can be explained another way is not, in my perspective, convincing.

Dupont (NOT DuPont) Circle is special because it's a double traffic circle. There's an inner circle and an outer circle. And lots of traffic lights. But you can screw yourself up easily if you don't know what you're doing.

The movie "The American President" with Douglas and Bening had several jokes about Dupont Circle. My mom had seen it a few times so she wondered what it was like. I drove my folks around it. They were stunned. And living in Canada, they're used to regular traffic circles.
But yeah, a lot of people don't know how to navigate them. Another adventurous one is the circle on the Virginia side of the Memorial Bridge, near Arlington Cemetery.

It was banned for new construction or application. It was pretty much everywhere, and my old company is still making a ton of coin identifying it and removing it in the Balt-DC area.

Shockingly, some landlords in low rent areas weren't exactly scrupulous in following all the latest decrees from their betters in the EPA.

281 Round about traffic circle We had a perfectly acceptable three way intersection that worked just fine. But then there was that terrible economic collapse in aught eight and Obama had all those shovel ready projects to put people back to work.

So..
there was a federal grant that went to union road contractors to chance the perfectly acceptable three way into something that vaguely resembles a traffic circle while essentially changing everything into a three way yield to traffic coming from your left. It's still a three way but now you don't have to stop. In two directions you can drive straight through while crossing left turn traffic dares you to hit them. Right turns are unencumbered except for the straight through traffic. And basically everyone is in conflict with everyone else and everyone has to yield the right of way to other traffic.

True Story.

Not until only recently were the incidents of gas station fires uncommon. There really was a reason for keeping the average driver away from the pump statistically.

But since no one smokes anymore, the prevalence of of non-static generating plastic and fabrics e'rrywhere, and better pumps, the rate has dropped.

My fantasy is that we have a liberal justice retire while we have a conservative prez. Conservative prez then names a conservative nominee and the Senate Dems and MSM go all bat-sh!t as they usually do and threaten to stop the nomination.

So the conservative prez says "F--k it, I ain't appointing anyone" and leaves the seat vacant. There's no requirement there be 9 justices. So the Senate Dems and MSM get to continue be bat-sh!t and but we can maybe for once get some traction out of them being the obstructionists.

Either way, it's 1 less liberal on the Court, so we win.

Yep. Absent some other information I think it's not particularly a sign of tremendous faith to claim a miracle in this instance, and it's certainly an intellectuality lazy example to parade in front of the skeptic.

I really do believe in miracles. On Friday my daughter came up, asking for prayer since she'd had hiccups for over an hour and was close to vomiting. She hiccuped once while I prayed and then they were gone.

Again, hiccups stop on their own, and I get it when people choose to never attribute to the miraculous what could be merely serendipitous. However, after enough personal experiences with such events, I'm convinced that prayer is effective and God still heals in Jesus name. But don't ask me what my batting average is. And don't ask me to ever predict when it will or won't happen.

And when lots of people who weren't there start shouting 'miracle' because the story fits a Hallmark movie storyline, I skip that bandwagon.

My spouse had fusion in 1974. Was in body cast for 7 months. Incapacitated for the first 2 months. I still think 1-1/2 weeks not quite healed even with new medicine.

That book has been on my shelf for many, many years. Good call.

SMFH.

Too right. For those who haven't lived it, do let me highly recommend that you immerse yourselves into the hunting of whitetailed deer, or other large game.

You learn to pull the trigger for deadly purpose. In cleaning the game, you both respect the animal, and learn to deal with the blood and gore.

Beneficially, you get a full freezer of tasty, tasty meat. But, you also break through that "killing" threshold, on a man-sized or larger target.

Nothing replaces the experience of combat, or armed self defense in one's own history. But, lacking that?

Go hunting. Get good at it. You'll learn skills that might just save your life one day.

Whether it happened or not, it would be justice for things that happened in the past.

Pro tip for rioters: avoid him. Or be prepared to have a candlelight vigil in your honor. Whichever, I don't give a fuck. And neither does he.

452 I know a bit about lead in paint. In Huck Finn's day, lead carbonate was a primary white pigment (but had very poor hiding power); thus the term whitewashing. Lead in household paint was banned in the US in 1978, titanium dioxide rules the roost now. There were other lead based colors as well such as lead chromate (chrome yellow).

Small amounts of lead were continued to be used as a catalyst in solvent based commercial paints; probably still used to a small extent. And I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that it still has some applications in artist paints.

So if you have a structure built prior to 1978, it may have a lead based paint; most likely painted over. And here's why kids eat it -- lead based paints taste sweet.

Here in the SF Bay area, there are all sorts of pearl-clutching fainting-violet tree-huggers who decry all sorts of environmental catastrophes if "horrible chemicals" get loose and accost people. Then they go golfing at the local Cinnabar Hills golf course, or visit the Almaden Quicksilver park, or visit their friends on Communications Hill -- where the natural level of asbestos in the soil is just a tiny smidge less than superfund-worthy. That mercury and asbestos was here before the Indians.....so I guess it's "natural" and "organic" and totally beneath notice. But break a fluorescent lamp in a trash can and bring in the isolation suits!

Be stiff, little lizard -- don't say a word

Daddy's gonna feed you a mockingbird

And if that mockingbird don't fit

Daddy might just take a hammer to it

And if that hammer mashes it to paste

Just think about how good that'll taste

And if this lizard turns up its nose

Daddy can break out the feeding hose

And if this lizard still says "no"

Hammers work on lizards, too, y'know....

(Yikes, I just posted this in last night's thread by accident.)

Hey everybody. As you know, I got a job (and thanks for all your
support!)... but am still looking for something closer/better paying.

Have an advice question for the horde. A "sequential resume" format
just lists your jobs in the order you got (and left/lost) them, right?
From your most recent to least?

Just got an email earlier about a job I sent my resume in, and got
asked for a "sequential format" resume. Except mine already *is* in
sequential format, EXCEPT for the fact that (I admit this is awkward)
I've been hired twice by not just one former employer, but two of them.

So, I list them as follows on my resume:

ACE CO. - Head Horde Herder

January 2007 to March 2008 *and* July 2001 to May 2003

OTHERBLOG CORPORATION - Apprentice Whippersnapper

September 2004 to September 2006 *and* July 1996 to June 2000

...now that I think about it, it can be kinda confusing. Still, I'd
think that given everything else is listed sequentially (including these
two, by the *most recent periods* I worked there), my experience list
would make sense.

I dunno.

552 Some parts worked better than other parts. Broderick did a great job for a High School musical, but just isn't half the cynical, blown-out, old, experienced, and tired grifter that Robert Preston could be without even trying. That Preston originated the role on stage and on Broadway leaves some huge shoes to fill, and, well.....

On the flip side, the kid who did Winthrop arguably did a better job than Opie. And casting more ordinary-figured people as Marcellus Washburn and Ethel Toffelmier gave the roles more nuance and depth [and also highlighted how many times Marcellus accidentally says "Greg"].

That River City somehow became 14% African-American between films is slightly jarring, and actually works against the structure of the play -- the idea that all Iowans are a bunch of stubborn rubes who act like clones but have good hearts isn't furthered through diversity programs.

To close with a final bit that really changed the meaning in an odd way -- the mayor and his wife were portrayed as decidedly younger in the newer version. This may not have been younger in terms of a calendar, but certainly in terms of career arc.

The older movie portrayed Mayor Shinn as a guy who was maybe 60 with an expected lifespan of 70 (the actor was actually 61 and passed away at 74). The newer one portrays him as a guy who was maybe 50 with an expected lifespan of 85 (the actor was actually 54 and is still alive). The wives are correspondingly portrayed.

But what that means is that a lot of Mayor Shinn's lines in the 1962 movie that sound forgetful or uncaring or absentminded.....sound secretive, duplicitous, conniving, and manipulative in the 2003 version. Instead of being a kindly old fart elected Mayor because he's outlived his contemporaries [and is not expecting to outlive much more], the mayor has to have schemed his way to power through focused pursuit.

Back in the day, there were years when we might have paid $4000 more income tax had we been married -- and, as executives, were threatened with potentially ruinous lawsuits that might have left us both destitute for the alleged sins of one. We stayed together through those years and soothed our disappointments with dive vacations to Fiji and Roatan, secure in knowing that we could crash on the other's couch if we had to file bankruptcy.

But not everywhere is as nutso as California.

Let me tell you a little something from my own personal experience, and you can decide whether this applies to you or not.

I used to work in public accounting as a staff accountant. This, BTW, sukz ballz.

On even-numbered days of the month, I'd regularly get called-in to partners' offices and flailed for having too few billable hours in a month -- I was making about $15/hour and being charged to clients at $60, so if I only had 100 billable hours in a month, the partners only made $4500 out of my carcass.....but if I had 150 billable hours, they would make $6750.

But on odd-numbered days of the month, they'd call me into their offices to chastise me for having the temerity to charge 20 hours to client X's job, when they'd promised client X that it should only cost $600 to fix his problem.

You can probably see the situation -- I was simultaneously being reamed under the excuse that I was simultaneously more or less efficient than the firm required me to be......but I was actually being reamed because the partners couldn't estimate the time on their jobs out of wet paper bags with AK-47s if their lives depended on it.

I guess another way to look at it is -- does your firm suck at estimating, or did you actually underperform? If you are confident in your level of performance, you should [tactfully] call them on their own failures.

Not really either, imo.

I think this all stems from some jealousy of coworkers who don't have the opportunity to get as many hours as I do.

I was followed a week and a half ago, so this comes on the tail end of that.

I grew up in NJ, so i had long experience with traffic circles.

Ah yes, NJ traffic circles. Bad but not the worst. For that you must venture to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Rent a stick shift vehicle. Now you're sitting on the 'wrong' side of the car, stick shift in the 'wrong' hand. You pull out onto the highway and now drive on the 'wrong' side of the road. Within a half mile you approach a traffic circle. I'm surprised there are not 100's of white crosses with tourists names, and burned out rental cars by the side of the road.

Not that I've seen, but that doesn't mean 'no.'

What I find absolutely awesome about all of this is the fact (and yes, it's a fact) that we're only now starting to find out the true details of the case and yet Baltimore's been burning for a week.

589 The problem is *lifts hammer* there's not enough *strikes server repeatedly* accountability *wrestles hard drive from server* by the police *strikes hard drive with hammer* and that is why *removes individual hard drive platters* all police *drops hard drive platters in acid* should have body cameras. This lawlessness must end.

Facts be damned, especially when they don't fit the narrative. I'm sure they are even afraid to release the report, because it will start a whole new shit storm. Only this time I don't think the NG will run away from the rock throwers.

Posted by: spypeach at April 30, 2015 06:58 AM (KTiWT)

593 NG= National Guard, just to be clear.

Posted by: spypeach at April 30, 2015 06:59 AM (KTiWT)

594 he idiots that are rioting base their actions on their perception of truth.
Yet the response to the other prisoners statement is usually, "How does he know, he couldn't see Freddy on the other side of the interior divider wall.

Hands up, don't shoot was based on a lie
Chances are that much of the presumed facts concerning Freddy Gray will turn out to be false.

But the one thing for certain with those clowns is that Toya was perpetuating the circle of violence by slapping her son upside the head, and dragging him out of that crowd on national tv.

595 Only this time I don't think the NG will run away from the rock throwers.

Posted by: spypeach at April 30, 2015 06:58 AM (KTiWT)

I'm torn on this.

On the one hand, I don't truly believe that the US military, in any form, would open up on civilians, no matter how riotous, unless they were engaged by small arms.

On the other, nobody in Wisconsin had a problem kicking in every door they were ordered to kick in. Not one single officer refused to raid innocent homes to achieve political ends.

So... I hope they run from the rock throwers.

The alternative is worse.

If you ask me where I'd draw the line - where'd I'd feel the NG should stand and fight... I don't have an answer. I truly don't.

I'm not yet at the point where I believe, with any regularity, that we have to destroy this nation to save it.

Posted by: Washington Nearsider, Keeper of the Guards at April 30, 2015 07:02 AM (fwARV)

I see that point, but if the police or the NG are being assaulted and there is a real risk to their lives, then I believe they should have the right to fight back and not run.

But as we have seen over the last few nights, there is a not a lot of violence going on in Baltimore because the punks know the NG is there and aren't as likely to stand down.

Posted by: spypeach at April 30, 2015 07:06 AM (KTiWT)

598 Nearsider- You present a false choice. The guard also has the option of engaging hand to hand. If they have good training, they should generally win any melee. They work together in a phalanx while rioters riot. They snatch the loudest and the most belligerent.
It's an old tried and true formula.

I believe that too. Deeply. I've BEEN in their boots, making that decision. Not in the States, of course, but the principle is the same.

The thing is, I also believe the US military using force on US soil against US citizens is a HUGE line. I don't want it crossed lightly.

If that means Baltimore gets a few more blocks burned out, so be it.

If they fire into the crowd, the whole country will burn.

Posted by: typo dynamofo at April 30, 2015 07:07 AM (i7JE3)

I'd love to see them working the phalanx through the crowd, busting heads as necessary, detaining as necessary.

Should the rioters get crazy, that may be the best answer.

Let's be honest though - there are more than a few rioters who are armed and who would love to strike a blow against The Man.

It's not the hand-to-hand that concerns me. It's what happens when the shooting starts.

I agree, that if one person gets shot by the NG, all hell will break loose and the country will burn. I'm just not sure that the country isn't already burning. I'll have to think on that one.

And that right there is the only question that really matters.

If it's already burning, we've got a solemn duty to put out the fires by removing the combustible materials.

If it's not already burning, we've got a solemn duty to not be the ones who light the match.
