Early Morning Thread 4/19/15: Wheels on Fire edition. [krakatoa]

Old. Full of pop references that are no longer Pop.

Patsy just may be living the quintessential AoS lifestyle, but I fear I am Eddy more often than not.

Patsy: What will you drink if you stop drinking?

Edina: I shall drink water.

Patsy: [Blank look]

Edina: It's a mixer, Patsy, we have it with whisky.

5 Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, April 19, 2015. On this day in 1971 Charles Manson was sentenced to death for conspiracy to commit murder in the murder of Sharon Tate and Rosemary LaBianca. The sentence was later reduced to life after a judge decided he didn't like the CA death penalty which was then later reinstated.

On the 20th anniversary of OKC bombing I thought I could share my memory. Sandra, Kevin and I had just arrived in Oklahoma on the 4th of April. I had a swing shift job at the Dana plant and would sleep until about noon before work. We lived in an apartment on NW10th between Rockwell and Council, so we were living pretty tight at the time. We didn't even have a TV set so we rarely paid attention to the news back then. I had no idea that the sound was an explosion more than 10 miles away.

At 9:03am I woke up because our windows were rattling and the walls felt like they were shaking. I looked outside and thought it was just thunder, even though it didn't look stormy. I went back to sleep, woke up around noon and started getting ready for work. While driving to work I listened to the news on the radio about the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building being bombed, the massive damage done to it and of all the deaths. What they didn't mention was that it was in Oklahoma City. Since I wasn't from the area and didn't have a TV I didn't find out that the murderous explosion that had woke me up at 9:03am was in the city I lived in until I got to work. It was such a shock to all of us. I worked with many people who knew or were related to people that worked at the Federal Building. It was a traumatic night filled with worry.

One blessing that we received then was Sandra had an appointment at a nearby government building around 9 or 9:30, but she was running so late that morning that she rescheduled the appointment. She would have been downtown when it happened if she was on time. I don't know if she would have been hurt or not, but I was never so grateful for her being late before.

86 Another good tree that doesn't grow too large is the Jane's Magnolia which I have been starting to grow the past two or three years.

They will grow in any soil in zones 4 through 8, Max height of 15 feet. I may be a little too far south for these but they look like they are doing OK if I don't keep getting these late freezes when they bloom.

87 I'm zone 6 with frosts to neg 10 or more. the spot was a ground out stump so lots of wood in it, some roots deep under. the soil is sandy and poor.

house itself is a 70s olive green, so colors are at issue somewhat. a vibrant red would be too garish, i think. I'm looking more at whites and purples for flowers. lilac does great here but too sloppy a shrub for the location.

i am doing lavender for the back flowerbed I'm building the front i just want something else.

I planted a dogwood in a ground out pine stump after a few years of deterioration. It hasn't been doing that well. I should have had someone come in with a backhoe and dig it up. This year if the first year that tree has bloomed. I had been told that dog woods and cotton woods spread their roots horizontally so I thought it would work out. maybe so but it sure is taking a long time.

93 Yesterday, in the rain.
1 ea 9-10 inch smallmouth and largemouth.
The biggest smallie I ever caught - 17 inch.
Bad part about the big, to me, smallmouth,,, while he was running the drag on a light outfit and making me think I had a keeper walleye after seeing a couple of flashes of gold and the way he was bull dogging for the bottom, the clicker on my baitcaster starts singing.
And keeps singing,,, and singing.
Beach the bass and get to the catfish rod,, still running with it. Lock up the reel, get a hook set, strong fish. And by that time I couldn't beat him and the stumps he had me around.
Ah well, there'll be more cats.
Limit on smallmouths in that lake, 18 inches. All I could keep was a pick and a memory. Was getting ready to pull the jig and minnow from the water about 7 feet away when I saw a quick flash, the mud/gravel swirled and the rod bent.

108 Boeings Best Union Buster Is South Carolinas Governor Nikki Haley http://bloom.bg/1ERbMlS

But this week, the South Carolina House of Representatives passed a bill that might pave the way to change.

Its a good sign when you can get the House of Representatives, a very conservative body, to cast a vote of 87-20 on a tax increase, Todd said.

It was welcome news to Todd, but he's not celebrating just yet.

Governor Nikki Haley has said she'll veto any roads bill that doesn't include three things: reducing the Income Tax rate from 7 percent to 5 percent over the next decade, reforming SCDOT, and increasing the gas tax by ten cents over the next three years.

146 I walked out into the yard, admiring the beautiful Spring morning. The neighbor was out, too, and she asked, had we heard about the explosion in Oklahoma City? All she knew was they thought a bomb had gone off.

We had just moved our little family from Chicago back to Oklahoma the year before. Our move was based on hope, not fear, but the first WTC bombing had certainly brought home to us the vulnerability of Big City Targets, like Chicago (among its other problems). And now, terrorism had followed us to the heartland, it seemed, although we were far from OKC. Well, I already knew the new World War had no borders.

Spent much of the rest of the day watching the news on TV. Lots of "misinfo" in the early hours. Like the reports of additional bombs inside the building. Or that Iraqi John Doe who was so important at first, then forgotten....

My childhood buddy is a nurse in OKC. I remember asking him about his experience. They didn't have to put out a call; every doctor and nurse available turned up voluntarily as soon as the news got out. Alas, as it was later in NYC on 9/11, there were not so many people to treat as you might think, building collapses tending to be rather thorough at killing occupants.

The 168 victims counted doesn't include three unborn.

Also there was a leg which was at first unidentified, then they realized it belonged to a victim who had been buried with the wrong leg, so there's still one unidentified leg.

By the evening, I found myself standing where I was when I first heard about it. Looking at the beauty of that night, remembering the beauty of the day, thinking about the marvelous efforts of all the people who pitched in, and wondering what makes a person go so wrong that they should so admire death above life.

Some links I've collected can be found here:
OKC Bombing -- still with us
http://bit.ly/OKC-20yrs

There is a link for a GoFundMe for the woman who had to have her leg amputated on-site at the bombing. Her artificial replacement is old and needs replacing.

159 Camelia's (and Azaleas) flourish on soil amended with coffee grounds. As well as the soil effects, the caffeine goes into the leaves and kills the spider mites that are the bane of each.

Bradford pears, as mentioned above, stink. Bee-pollinated flowers swell sweet. Bees make honey. Bradfords are fly-pollinated. Fly's like s**t. Bradfords scent is designed to attract flies.

Years ago, I brought in some Bradford boughs to force in the early spring. I put them in a big vase on the mantle. Two days later I came home and they had all opened, filling the house with their fly attractant. Ugh.

Also, as the IAMA scumbags realize that support for them by the local community is in the dumper, they have been toying with the notion of postponing the vote for 6 months for additional time to plot and scheme. If they hold and lose the vote, they'd have to wait a full 12 months for another--or, until Emperor O' decrees that it shall be done, whichever comes first.

164 I thought they had a vote when they first opened the factory and the union lost.

165 I don't think so. I know the NLRB initially sued Boeing to prevent them from opening a non-union shop in SC. Then, following the NLRB dropping the suit, the unions proceeded to shit all over Boeing SC for years. Maybe you're thinking of the more recent, repeated UAW attempts at infiltration in southern automotive plants?

Anyway, it looks like the union goons actually *have* postponed the vote and will, instead, whine to the NLRB to get Obama involved:

"The IAM said it has filed Unfair Labor Practice charges with the NLRB."

166 A lot of landscapers have quit using the Bradford pear. It is prone to wind and snow damage when it is mature. I had a large one in the front yard and it split down the middle, taking out a Japanese maple.

A pretty tree is the Jane or Ann magnolia. They are smaller trees than the Southern magnolia and are deciduous. The Southern magnolia gets huge and drops those awful leathery leaves all over the place. I would only have one in a far corner of a large lot where the mess was not as bothersome.

Another good alternative is the Chinese pistache, depending on how big you want the tree.
