Overnight Open Thread (4-16-2015)

Periodically I lift the ban on poetry in the ONT and tonight I do so again to bring you Thomas Babington Macaulay's Horatius at the Bridge. (1842)

In my middle school we were expected to recite a poem or work from memory once a year before the entire school. You were allowed to choose your piece to recite subject to minimum length restrictions and teacher approval. Since I really enjoyed this poem, I was very tempted to choose it but the catch was that even the abridged version was full 38 stanzas long. So I went with Marc Antony's funeral speech from Julius Caesar instead - because I liked it and it also had the very helpful quality of being short enough that I knew I could recite it under duress without stumbling or going blank.

But then here I learned that Winston Churchill as a boy memorized all 70 stanzas of the unabridged Horatius at the Bridge to inspire courage in himself (and also to prove to the headmaster that he was not a complete academic failure). So yeah by comparison I guess I was a middle school pussy.

Horatius at the Bridge

(This is my abridged abridged ONT micro-version. You're welcome)

...But when the face of Sextus
Was seen among the foes,
A yell that rent the firmament
From all the town arose.
On the house-tops was no woman
But spat towards him and hissed;
No child but screamed out curses,
And shook its little fist.

But the Consul's brow was sad,
And the Consul's speech was low,
And darkly looked he at the wall,
And darkly at the foe.
"Their van will be upon us
Before the bridge goes down;
And if they once may win the bridge,
What hope to save the town?"

Then out spake brave Horatius,
The Captain of the Gate:
"To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his gods,

"And for the tender mother
Who dandled him to rest,
And for the wife who nurses
His baby at her breast,
And for the holy maidens
Who feed the eternal flame,
To save them from false Sextus
That wrought the deed of shame?

"Haul down the bridge, Sir Consul,
With all the speed ye may;
I, with two more to help me,
Will hold the foe in play.
In yon strait path a thousand
May well be stopped by three.
Now who will stand on either hand,
And keep the bridge with me?"

Then out spake Spurius Lartius;
A Ramnian proud was he:
"Lo, I will stand at thy right hand,
And keep the bridge with thee."
And out spake strong Herminius;
Of Titian blood was he:
"I will abide on thy left side,
And keep the bridge with thee."

"Horatius," quoth the Consul,
"As thou sayest, so let it be."
And straight against that great array
Forth went the dauntless Three.
For Romans in Rome's quarrel
Spared neither land nor gold,
Nor son nor wife, nor limb nor life,
In the brave days of old.

And per LDC's link, apparently the New Republic never came into being in JJ Abram's version of S. 80 Memorized poem?

A bunch of the boys were whooping it up in the Malamute saloon;
The kid that handles the music-box was hitting a jag-time tune;
Back of the bar, in a solo game, sat Dangerous Dan McGrew,
And watching his luck was his light-o'-love, the lady that's known as Lou.

When out of the night, which was fifty below, and into the din and the glare,
There stumbled a miner fresh from the creeks, dog-dirty, and loaded for bear.
He looked like a man with a foot in the grave and scarcely the strength of a louse,
Yet he tilted a poke of dust on the bar, and he called for drinks for the house.
There was none could place the stranger's face, though we searched ourselves for a clue;
But we drank his health, and the last to drink was Dangerous Dan McGrew.

& etc....

And when a new arrival asks about the one to whom even Hela bows her head... the answer is always the same... he stood alone at Gjallerbru... and that answer is enough.

I wasn't as blown away by it as some were, but I thought it was decent.

And per LDC's link, apparently the New Republic never came into being in JJ Abram's version of S. Who'd thunk, killing off the Head of State and his main enforcer (with the bulk of the Imperial Fleet still intact, along with many planetary Governors and Moffs) in itself didn't immediately bring in a new age of peace of prosperity in that galaxy.
Posted by: Thrawn at April 16, 2015 11:35 PM (wZ2hu)

Well actually most of the authors that did the expanded universe did too. Since they were still fighting the empire for decades. And they had taken Coruscant at around 3-4 years after Palpatines death but that was mostly because the psycho in charge wanted to give them a poisoned planet.

Yeah, that.

- and this is where the extended-universe of the books got it right. The end of the Roman Empire in the West didn't exactly bring a new age of enlightenment and democracy to Gaul, Hispania and Britannia. Gregory of Tours made that pretty damn clear.

146 "In a hall of strange description (Antiquarian Egyptian),
Figuring his monthly balance sheet, a troubled monarch sat
With a frown upon his forehead, hurling interjections horrid
At the state of his finances, for his pocketbook was flat."

"Not a solitary single copper cent had he to jingle
In his pocket, and his architects had gone off on a strike,
Leaving pyramids unfinished, for their wages had diminished,
And their credit vanished likewise, in a way they didn't like."

"It was harder for His Royal Highness than for sons of toil,
For the horny-handed workmen only ate three figs per day,
While the King liked sweet potatoes, puddings, pies, and canned tomatoes,
Boneless ham, and Bluepoint oysters cooked some prehistoric way."

"As he growled, the Royal grumbler spied a bit of broken tumbler
In a long undusted corner just behind the chamber door.
When his hungry optics spied it, he stood silently and eyed it,
Then he smote his thigh with ecstasy and danced about the floor."

"'By the wit Osiris gave me! This same bit of glass shall save me!
I shall sell it as a diamond at some stupendous price!
And whoe'er I ask to take it will find, for his own sweet sake, it
Will be better not to wait until I have to ask him twice!'"

279 Okay, great stuff on the Long Form.

Now then, an idea has occurred to me, and it's one for which I utterly lack the technological prowess to execute.

Some intrepid Hordeling might put together an online channel. Pandora, iHeart, etc.

The AoS Channel. Best of Barroom Juke, and a sub-channel of Long Form Favorites.

Take all of the tracks heretofore listed, and assemble them accordingly.

I think that after a year or so of additions and exposure, that it would be one hell of a great music source, and a rather highly trafficked site, withal.

Being under the AoS label, it'd likely be a decent revenue stream for the Ewok his own furry self.

I haven't the slightest idea of how to go about it, but I think it'd hit a target if someone DID.

What sayeth ye, Horde?

I always liked to play Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison and Leader of the Pack when I was shooting pool for grocery money in the bar when I was in college.

Jukebox songs can be fun or a pain if someone is blue about a break up.

I always have appreciated a little AC/DC - Dirty Deeds or ShookMeAll Night Long

or Stones - rock and roll only, though, no f'in ballads

No Beatles, unless it's Baby You Can Drive My Car or something else upbeat.

409 The "money stanza" (i.e. the one that Churchill liked to quote a lot), is:

Then out spake brave Horatius,
The Captain of the Gate:
"To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his gods.

He (Churchill) was also very fond of the works of Arthur Hugh Clough, in particular the poem "Say Not the Struggle Naught Availeth", which ends with the words But westward, look, the land is bright!

423 One of the most touching Civil War monuments I have seen is at Cheatham Hill on the southern slopes of Kennesaw Mountain, in Georgia. The two lines were entrenched there, just yards apart. Just before the final, fatal, charge, Col. Dan McCook of the 52nd Ohio Regiment gathered his men together, and recited to them the poem Horatius, and especially the lines,

"Then out spake brave Horatius,
The Captain of the Gate:
To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.

And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his gods"

Shortly thereafter, Col. Dan McCook was leading his regiment over the top of the confederate breastworks when he was shot through the lung, and died. For the courage he displayed, he was appointed as a full Brigadier General, posthumously.

No death is to be cheered, but that was a true soldier's death if there ever was one.

I did that with a mole in the garage. There was something eating a hole in the plastic garbage bags, and I couldn't figure out wtf was doing it.

My brother was over, and we were remodeling my bathroom. He steps out into the garage to cut something and he says holy shit there is a mouse in your garbage.

I look outside and sure enough, the fucker was running around inside the bag. I could see the dark mass running around in the white bag. I grabbed this pos single shot shotgun with a long ass barrel and a skeet load, and BOOM. The funny part was the bag expanded for a split second, like somebody hooked it up to a 500psi air compressor, and when the bag relaxed it spit out a half of mouse which landed right into a small cardboard box sitting next to the bag.

My brother says, you frigging missed it right?

I said no, go look in the box. He looks in and says ewww that's a gruesome episode. The whole back half of the mouse was missing.

yeah wasn't very smart seeing the Harley was only 2 feet away. Was funny when I first did it though. lol

It was a large platform, no one in front of you or behind you for a ways. When the (plastic) bottles started flying, a few went over our heads, and some hit behind us. I grabbed my daughter and huddled against the wall behind us. When it was clear that it wasn't going to stop, we worked our way to the walkway under the stand. We asked a security guy if there was somewhere we could go, he just said to get out ASAP. I've never been back.

We're out in Vegas, Entwistle dies.

Growing up it was all Motown and 70's Lite Rock. Mom was The Master of the Airwaves in the car and at home, because Dad didn't give a shit. Late 70's, Early 80's it was Country.

I got my first stereo/LP/cassette player when I was 12. 1983 was a weird year to start listening to whatever I wanted.

Hard Rock, R&B, some rap, mainly Top 40 until I was about seventeen, (198. Then It Was All Over...

Beer & Metal, whatever the 90's was, (forgot about five years' worth of the mess I was in), and then sports talk radio, Howard Stern...

*boom* 9/11.

I'm looking at the costume for the villain (or one anyway) with the lightsaber hilt, and I can't help but think of her bounty hunter get-up from RotJ and how literally anyone could be wearing that and we'd be none the wiser.

You-all, en masse, are simply demonstrating the old theory that people tend to only like the music they grew up with in their teens and twenties, and are endlessly affectionate toward it, while condemnatory of all other eras.

People who were in their teens and twenties in the '70s and '80s will generally declare music from that era as the only music worth listening to.

My grandfather insisted that Dixieland was the only music of any quality ever made. My mother swears up and down that Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald are the apogee of musical perfection. My older sister will literally punch you if you deny the supremacy of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. And any random 15 year-old will tell you that Miley Cyrus and some random rapper are the best ever.

I seem to be of that rare breed who seek out and appreciate music from any era, even if I never personally "experienced" that era when I was in my impressionable years. There's a whole universe of music out there that just about everyone misses out on, because they don't think of it as "their" music.

My favorite memories were carefree games of kickball, swingsets, throwing rocks at stuff and riding my bike.

While "When Smokey Sings" by ABC was decent, actually listening to Smokey Robinson was better.

...much better.

I'll always have a soft-spot for Duran-Duran. I was a kid. "The Reflex" and "New Moon on Monday" were on vinyl and I still enjoy the shit out of them.

(I mentioned earlier that 1983 was a weird time to control you own dial, amigos. I was twelve, fuckers.)

Give me Stevie Wonder, Martha and the Vandellas, The Temptations, The Supremes, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson?

Couldn't agree more. I love music from just about every decade of the 20th century and a VERY WIDE array of genres. The trick is picking out what's good in each era/genre and that's not always what is remembered or is/was popular.

To your point about our special affection for the music of our teens and twenties... I'm aware of that bias. There is a huge bank of music from the 80's and 90's that i find nostalgic even though I hated it then and still don't think it's particularly good music. I still enjoy it now, though, on occasion.

Later.
Don't overeat on the donuts.

674 Well, look at that.

Big Brown is gonna drop off my new Polish friend sometime this morning.

C&R baby...
The only way it could get more expensive is if I owned a boat.

675 Sven is either "hyper-intelligent" or "extreme A.D.D." They are not mutually exclusive, so I continue to endeavor deciphering some of the more complicated and twisted posts.

Alas, I am a simpleton. Sven's vortex of language makes for a Sudoku at times when I am a search-a-word individual.

All in all? I like puzzles.

683 Late to the party, as usual. I've been offline for a week nursing a sick cat 24/7. Something made me come in here today. I'm so glad I did, for I found "Horatius at the Bridge". It's still a cliffhanger.

Thanks, Maet.
