Howard Husock: A Tale of Two First Ladies

Hillary famously dissed Tammy Wynette back during Bill's 1992 campaign for president:

In 1992, as charges first emerged about her husband's alleged extra-marital affairs, both Clintons appeared together on CBS's 60 Minutes. Their goal? To defend Bill and to assert Hillary's independence. She told interviewer Steve Kroft, "I'm not sitting here some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wynette. I'm sitting here because I love him and I respect him."

hillwynette20150413-hh

But of course Hillary ended up doing exactly what she mocked Tammy for doing. And showed her ignorance of Wynette's actual life since Tammy was in fact prepared to walk away from her men when she had to.

It's certainly true that the late country singer Tammy Wynette was best known for her mega-hit "Stand by Your Man." But Hillary's statement was wrong on two counts. In her own life, the thrice-married, twice-divorced Wynette actually did not stand by her men. Hillary, by any measure, has. In fact, Wynette might be considered a paragon of feminist courage and independence, while Hillary, to win the White House, will have to prove that she has what it takes to accomplish great things on her own.

And Wynette is really far more of a real feminist hero than Hillary is since she managed to succeed on her own in a very tough business in the 60s while a single mother with three kids and no money or contacts.

From a start picking cotton on her grandfather's farm in Itawamba County, Mississippi, Virgina Wynette Pugh rose to become the acknowledged First Lady of country music even before she ended up marrying its king, George Jones. Married as a teenager, she overcame a divorce from her often-unemployed, construction-worker husband to raise three children on her own. To do so, she earned a beautician's license and worked as a hairdresser, all while singing at night in clubs. Even after becoming a star she kept the license up to date, lest her luck run out.

Success came for Wynette only after she quit her job and, without securing a place to live for herself and her children, moved to Nashville to pursue what country star Alan Jackson once described as "that neon rainbow" of music stardom. Her big break came in an audition with legendary Nashville producer Billy Sherrill. Sherrill understood Wynette's capacity to transmit a breathtaking depth of emotion.

Stand by Your Man is an awesome song and despite supposedly being written in a mere 15 minutes by Sherrill and Wynette I think it reflects Wynette's real emotions and struggles already by age 26. But it was not necessarily her philosophy of life and love either. Wynette truly did it her own way and Hillary, especially given her own choices in the years since, owes her a bit of an apology after all this time.

Al Sharpton Stages Rolling 'Hunger Strike' to Aid Loretta Lynch's Stalled AG Nomination

And Ed Driscoll is prepared to meet him rolling hunger strike for rolling hunger strike.

As I wrote in response, I was so moved by their efforts, "I'm going on my own personal thrice-daily rolling hunger strike. That's right: rather than just one random hunger strike once a year, I'll eschew all solid foods from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. And from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM. And then just to really stick it to the war-mongering imperialists, I'll fast from 6:00 PM until 8:00 AM the following day."

And I'm prepared to do the same every day once again, no matter what happens to the would-be attorney general. Fight the power, err, in this case, for the power, man!

How the Delivery of the S-300 Air Defense System May Guarantee Iran the Bomb

The S-300 is not invincible, but suppressing that type of system requires significant investments in resources and time.  The U.S., for example, would employ salvos of cruise missiles to eliminate deployed SAM batteries and eliminate support infrastructure.  Cyber attacks would be employed against the early warning and command-and-control networks that support the S-300, in an effort to reduce situational awareness and force individual batteries into autonomous or semi-autonomous operations.  As the S-300 network becomes increasingly fragmented, stealth platforms like the F-22 would lead missions aimed at eliminating most of the remaining launchers and radars, providing support and cover for E/F-18 Growlers (providing jamming support) and F-16CJs in the Wild Weasel role.

At a minimum, this effort would take dozens of cruise missile strikes and scores of sorties over a period of several days.  And that's a luxury that Israel doesn't have.  Even with forward basing in places like Azerbaijan, or access through Saudi airspace, the Israeli Air Force would be looking at complex, long-range missions and they would be asset-limited by their small tanker fleet.  Most estimates of an IAF first strike against Iranian nuclear targets put the number of tactical aircraft at somewhere between 24-36, roughly the maximum number that could be refueled by six or seven Israeli tankers.

...This much is certain: Israel's "window" for eliminating the S-300 threat (and bombing Iranian nuclear sites) is growing quite narrow.  Russia and Iran won't rest until the air defense system is operational, and Tehran always has the option of ratcheting up covert development efforts, in facilities unknown to both the U.S. and Israel.  The Iranians know the IAF has only a limited ability to sustain a long-distance air campaign against targets in their country, and arrival of the S-300 will force the Israelis to rethink their options.  Meanwhile, the world power capable of sustaining an air campaign against Iran (the United States) is firmly wedded to a "diplomatic solution" that effectively gives Tehran the bomb.

Why Major League Baseball's New Time Rules Are Awesome

I can appreciate the measured pace of baseball but when games start routinely approaching the length of The Godfather parts I, II, and III back to back well they're pushing it. If I can fly to Vegas and back during a game, it's too damn long.

It's a leisurely game. You're given nine innings to win and if you're tied at the end of that, you get free baseball until someone wins.

However, there's a big difference between a leisurely two-hour game and those regularly slogging in at three-and-a-half hours for only nine innings of play. So Major League Baseball put in new clocks - the baseball equivalent of shot clocks, essentially - to quicken the pace by shortening the breaks between innings and pitching changes. The League also instituted regulations requiring hitters to keep a foot in the batter's box, with notable exceptions (e.g. foul balls, wild pitches, time outs). The shot clocks are 2 minutes, 25 seconds for locally televised games and 2 minutes, 45 seconds for nationally televised games. Pitchers have to throw their last warm-ups before 30 seconds remain.

The traditionalists are up in arms but Mollie Hemingway points out that this is really getting the game back to where it was in the golden age:

I reminded him that baseball games were completed in about 2 hours during "The Natural" era. I'd happily go back to that length and enjoy every moment that took place between pitches.

2014 Nürburgring Nordschleife: Just The Good Parts

I like the crashes where they're driving their mother's hostaback in a straight line, and then somehow manage to spin out. All the ones with real race cars are good too, but there's a certain charm to watching a Fiat Panda go careening into a wall. To be honest, the smaller the car, the more entertaining I find its demise. Along with that, I love when they're not going very fast. It takes skill to completely oversteer and spin out when you're going 10 MPH.

66 Tim McGraw has a phenomenal voice and endless talent. Got to see him in a private concert for about 4,000 folks at a convention in Orlando.

That voice and talent won't save him from himself though.

Back when Zumbo famously kamikaze'd his career, Tamera Keel said of him; "He stuck his keyboard into his mouth and pulled the trigger".

Zumbo had the sense to issue many a heartfelt MeaCulpa, and delved deeply into the land of the Black Rifle, so as to re-educate himself to the industry changes of which he'd remained proudly ignorant until his kerfuffle.

What McGraw's doing though, will allow no room for a Zumbo rehabilitation. None.

I predict a huge drop off in sales of anything McGraw. I'll wager that he won't be filling any arena shows.

Watch the gun-blogosphere on this one. This'll go off like a forest fire in a dry California forest.

67 Tim McGraw Poised To "Dixie Chick" Himself With Gun Control Benefit Concert

So the theory of these gun control nuts is that gun control laws would have prevented that Sandy Hook freak from killing kids. You had this guy who was so f**ked up that he planned to take guns and ammo into a school and murder as many 6 year olds as he could, then blow his own brains out.

Their solution: Nutjob goes to gun shop, tries to buy some kind of semi-automatic gun and clips or magazines that hold lots of bullets. Because of magic gun control, he can't buy the type of gun or clips he'd planned on. So he says to himself, "Oh well, I guess I won't go on a murderous rampage of 6 year olds after all." That's how Tim McGraw, Jugears, et al think this would play out?

108 It's also worth noting that, if you pay attention to the lyrics of Stand By Your Man, it's clear that Ms. Wynette isn't telling telling you to stick with him no matter how much he sucks.

The man she describes in that song is a quality guy. A real man. He works hard to provide for her, without complaint, because that's what men do.

She's telling you that it's hard to be a young, attractive woman in the prime of her life, tied down to a strong-and-silent hard-workin' man whose accomplishments and worth may not seem obvious at first glance. But you need to make the effort.

Don't ditch that good, salt-of-the-earth man for the next shiny dick that points in your direction right now, is what she's saying. And work hard, yourself, to be worthy of that good, salt-of-the-earth man.

Bill Clinton is not a good, salt-of-the-earth man; he is that next shiny dick pointing in your direction right now.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at April 15, 2015 11:19 PM (oKE6c)

I quibble with that a bit. Robinson also showed, that rookie year, that he could take an incredible amount of abuse and hatred - and still succeed at sports. He was under orders from Branch Rickey to hold his temper all season long and he did so, despite a shitstorm of hatred directed at him.

That's not nothing. Robinson WAS an American hero.

What gets me is that everyone in baseball rattles off cheap platitudes about how great he was, but Robinson's real beliefs have been obscured and ignored.

He was a Christian and a Republican, a guy who never asked for a handout, never wanted to be treated differently than anybody else, just wanted to show what he could do. He took abuse like a man. He didn't whine. He had dignity and class. In the late '60's the Black Panthers called him a Tom because he was against violence and affirmative action.

In short, he was the complete opposite of Al Sharpton and his band of bottom feeders. If Robinson could see the SJWs of today, he'd puke.

165 I was watchin'the TV at the beginning of the 1972 World Series between the Reds and the A's, and Jackie Robinson was in the stands, and threw out the first pitch. Joe Morgan came over to shake his hand (Joe who would win MVP in '75 and '76) and had that look on his face like a kid does when he meets his idol. Years later Joe said that was a big moment in his life.

And a few months later Jackie Robinson was dead. And that's how I remember Jackie Robinson. All this latter day BS is just that.

He was a man, and lived in his day, and played the game....hard.

When I was a kid I was in 4 H with horses. You had to have western wear, including a cowboy hat. There are two kinds, straw(plastic) and felt. The felt hats, especially Stetson, are much more desirable. Why rich country singers wear the straw ones is beyond me.

When I lived in Hendersonville, TN I used to hang out at a place called Anchor High Grill (since changed ownership and now called The Rudder), a floating bar and restaurant at a marina on Old Hickory Lake.

Taylor's parents live in H'ville, and she did as well before she moved out to her own place. One fine Sunday afternoon (spring of 2009, IIRC) I was there with a few of my friends going in as she was coming out. We were polite and said, "Hey Taylor, how's it going?" as we passed her. She went, "Pfft," turned up her nose and continued on her way.

Her parents are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Used to have a drink with them from time to time.

Yep, that's another reason the adulation is so off-putting. Both Robinson and MLK were real men, with real lives. Much of what they believed in, and did during their lives is very incompatible with the modern left's perspectives on race. So they put the plastic figures up there for everyone to worship.

I guess she's just a serial liar to gain points, but why would Hillary
even bother to lie about grandparents being immigrants?-that stuff can
be easily checked. The people who will vote for her won' t care and the
rest will think it's just part of a pattern.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke

She's a pathological liar. She desparately wants to be.....loved. Or worshipped. Whatever.

She says these things because there is a big hole in her soul that can't be filled. She lies to prove that people will love her no matter what. It's kind of like an abusive relationship. If she become President, she will lie about things all the time. She lied about Bill constantly, and she KNEW the truth. She lied about Benghazi, and Christopher Stevens was supposed to be her friend.

It's a sickness, and a big part of the populace out there love her.

Wanna just chill out and completely blitzed? Sooner or later Gary Allen will come in and sit quietly with some of his friends and band members and pound drinks for several hours.

Karaoke night? Yeah, that's Tommy Heath (vocalist for Tommy Tutone) up there singing, but he can't do 867-5309 due to contractual reasons.

It's less the appearance, rather than the kind of woman inside the skin. I used to know a woman who was kinda plain and homely, a little goofy. But all the guys that worked with her adored her because she was funny and charming, and fun to be around.

The wife of a guy that works for me is also kind of homely, but not unpleasant looking. But she has a warm and charismatic personality, and all kinds of people are always charmed with her wherever she goes. She makes friends with anybody very easily.

There is a little lady who cuts hair at the barber shop I go to. She is a little cute and chubby, but is absolutely the sweetest woman, and gets treated like a queen there.

That's why so many of them live in Hendersonville. Everyone there is so used to "celebrity" it's boring. Most of that's because they got used to Johnny Cash living there, then all the other musicians that fled Metro Nashville.

Hell, H'Ville's version of Otis Campbell is Marty Stuart.

497 Both A and B are what beer, light swtiches and dark bedrooms are meant for.

Frankly, Ms. Swift is indeed, blessed with a classically beautiful face, alluring, sultry and seductive. And her legs. Oh, her legs.

A bit more ass, a bit more tits, and perfection approaches.

Still though, if lacking the heart and soul of an 'Ette, she'd be for me a "pass". I've had one similar in my past, a beauty who at 40, could have been a "walk on" for any Budweiser Calendar ever or yet printed.

Yet, she lacked certain essential humanities which are the hallmark of the 'Ette, and the lack thereof signal the shrew.

Column B? If one considers that a marriage is to an entire family, then so is dating at any level beyond the proverbial hook-up. And that's a family to avoid at all costs, given all available evidence.

That kind of crazy infuses the entire family tree, root to branch, and it's best to avoid altogether.

The 'Ettes here pretty much define what are the good, positive and desirable traits to find in a lass.

Mind, heart, spirit, soul. The inner beauties.

And, word has it that they're all hotties, too. I have no reason to doubt that, either. No reason at all.

512 Why does Hillary lie?

Simple, she want the adoration of the crowd she is speaking to, and she knows the media will never call her on any of it.

It is the same reason every Dem throws out about a 100 lies in a speech, and when the GOP calls them on one lie, all the other lies just go on by. It's like a security guard trying to stop a gang of "youths" from shoplifting en masse, you might get one, but all the rest will get away. So, all those people who think being the child of immigrants will say that "Hillary knows what I go through" even though she has no idea.

530 Y'know, I was never very good at math, or so I thought, and took the minimum required classes to get through high school and college...but even so, I solved that Singapore math problem thingie (that "went viral" on Facebook because everyone thought it must be a mistake since it was impossible to find an answer) in under 3 minutes, without breaking much of a sweat.

That's because it's not really a math problem, but actually a logic problem (and although the two concepts are related, they're not the same thing).

Logic -- now that is something I've always been good at. I'm not sure why everyone was so baffled by the Singapore problem -- it wasn't even very complicated. Everyone's bewilderment at it only confirms what has been self-eivdent for quite a number of years now -- that the US population absolutely stink at math these days.

When I was in school, I very distinctly considered myself a math moron, way below average. Now, although my own skill level has not changed, I suddenly feel I'm above average (in this country at least) -- because the national skill level collapsed around me.

One thing about slap is that he speaks from his heart -- which is why it rings so true to us who habitually conceal our own. On the flip side, he doesn't do "commissioned" prayers, even when he could articulate our hopes, wishes, and communications with the almighty so much better than we could.

557 I love being an author. I was doing about the 90 bazillionth edit on a chapter today. It started out as a just fiddling with it around the edges, then I rewrote it from top to bottom, adding about 1800 words to it, forcing me to split it into two.

Currently, my chapters are named by picking some descriptive phrase from the chapter and using that as the title. The former title for this chapter was from the part that got split off, so I had to come up with a new chapter title. I now present you with the coolest chapter title in about ever:

Fat-Ass Mountain of Lard

I should just leave it.

Robert and I haunted the ONT together when I was preparing to visit Saint Petersburg. If I wanted to nail down the dates, it was after the two exhibitions from the Musee d'Orsay in San Francisco. Those two exhibitions rubbed our noses in the fact that there were very few "great galleries" of art, and one in particular always ended up being off the radar -- the Hermitage. So, the fiancee and I visited the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, and Peterhof......it was lovely.....and, then, a couple of years later, Americans were shit.

Anyway, it turns out that Russian and English share a lot of vocabulary.....that you'd never know about if you couldn't adapt to the difference in alphabet. For instance, stop signs in Russia say "stop" -- except it's spelled C, T, O, *pi*. Restaurant is "PECTOPAH" -- they're pronounced the same. You frequently see "CY*pi*EPMAPKET" -- that's a supermarket (Y is U). There are a bunch of places marked "KA *phi* E" that are cafes.

And TPAKTOP is pronounced and means tractor.

581 "And TPAKTOP is pronounced and means tractor."

The funny thing is that I'd studied Greek when I was a kid -- maybe 11 or 12 years old -- just for shits and giggles. So I was somewhat familiar with the Greek alphabet going in. But when you see a place across the street with a sign that says " *gamma*ACTPOHOM", it takes you a while to realize that it spells out "gastronom" and sells snacks.

And to this day, Scankles has failed at everything she has done.

Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at April 16, 2015 05:19 AM (wlDny)

585 One of the more amusing parts of visiting the Hermitage is that I got to see some old friends. There was an exhibition in Los Angeles about art of the Scythians that I saw when I was young. Many of those artifacts permanently reside in the "treasure room" of the Hermitage.

They look like they have a 1920s stylized aesthetic....in reality, they're 2000 years older. http://tinyurl.com/q2pejuq

Anyone wanting to support my protest, bring broccoli. Well put that at the top of the pressure cooker.

652 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, April 16, 2015. On this day in 1457 BC the first recorded battle in history was fought between Pharaoh Thutmost III and the Canaanites under the King of Kadesh at Megiddo. Of course the Pharaoh was the winner and hero since the only surviving account of the battle is at a temple at Karnak. And we still have similar battles going on and around there today. Indeed, according to Revelations the final battle between good and evil will take place there. BTW, the Greek name for this city is Armageddon.

Like all gun control laws, the only people they have any impact on is honest people.

656 California is going after cigarette taxes again. They want a $2.00 increase in State taxes from the current 87 cents. The average price of a pack of cigarettes in CA is now $5.50. Most of that $5.50 was an increase in "unofficial" taxes obtained through the illegal tort action by the States to extort money from the cigarette companies who then passed it on via price increases.

699 Re the Maryland free-range kids - I grew up and still live in the same county where these kids live. When I was in elementary school I had to walk 3/4 of a mile to school. The kids across the street got to ride the bus. There was no expectation that parents where shadowing the walkers or walking with us. No expectation that the parents set up a 'walking school bus'. The last part of the walk was through a wooded area to reach the playground behind the school. Periodically there were reports of a pervert hanging out in the woods, so we kids were warned to walk through the woods in groups, not singly, and student patrols were assigned to monitor the bridge over the stream. As an 11-year-old I was a student patrol and was assigned to escort the half-day kindergartners through the woods and to the road so they could continue walking home, by themselves if their parents weren't there to meet them.

In other words, when I was growing up, the Board of Ed expected us to do exactly what the free-range kids were doing - get ourselves home without parental supervision. And if an 11-year-old child was considered an appropriate escort for a 5-year-old, why is everyone outraged at a 10-year-old supervising his 6-year-old sister? As far as I know, the kids in my old neighborhood are still walking to elementary school, up to 3/4 mile, by themselves if their parents can't/won't drive them or walk with them.

700 Tammy Wynette responded with the observation that she vhad isited the White House several times as an invited singer on her own merits, not her husband's. She also apparently held a grudge, or at least her friends did did; Lorrie Morgan (who has recorded at least one album with Tammy Wynette) included "Stand By Your Man" in her set when Hillary hosted country performers at the White House. If I recall correctly, rumor had it that this was an unannounced addition.

Some group - Congressional wives, I think - who had provided the list of performers apologized to Hillary for this. I gather it would have been hard to put together a slate of country singers which *didn't* have someone indebted to Tammy Wynette for career assistance. In any case, I don't believe Lorrie Morgan ever apologized.
