Sarah Silverman Struggles to Come Up With Her Own Tale of Wage-Discrimination Woe; Comes Up With One Example, Then, When Confronted With the Facts, Apologizes and Admits It's Not a "Very Good" Wage Discrimination Story At All

They love their Stories, don't they?

Talking with Salon about all the Wage Discrimination this comedian has not faced, she invented a tale of woe in which a club owner paid her (male) friend Todd Barry $60 for a set, but only offered her $10.

The club owner read of this, and responded by reading her the riot act:

Are you kidding ? You come in to my club 15 years ago and ask me for a guest spot , I did not ask you to perform and you were not booked, and Then you ask me for pay ? You asked to work out some material...

Then you make this a gender pay thing ? Sarah great cause I am with it, but I did not pay you less cause of gender …..I paid you less because Todd Barry was booked and you weren't…It was a GUEST SPOT, so I gave you some car fare, which actually is more than almost any club would have given for a GUEST Spot…Funny how in your attempt to become a super hero with a noble cause, you forgot that little fact…GUEST SPOT ….GUEST SPOT

Comedians often appear at clubs unannounced to work out new material -- material which isn't ready for a paying audience. But they do need to test it out on people -- so they appear by surprise, in front of a crowd that isn't expecting them so they can't be really disappointed if the material is weak or raw.

They aren't often paid for this -- because they're not providing the club any kind of service. It's really more the club that's providing them the service.*

So this guy offered her $10 for gas.

She now admits that this club owner is right, and that she should not have made this claim.

But she's doubling down on it anyway, and calling critics "maniacs."

To the maniacs who want to use this as a chit against women’s issues, I ask that you please don’t. Because that would be super shitty. Feel free to aim your vitriol at me but leave this issue of working women out of it, K?

This has the feel of the UVA Rape story-- we're going to keep trotting out these claims of rapes being ignored by the authorities, and then, when those stories turn out to be completely false, we're going to call you nasty names like "rape apologist."

Let's face it: Sarah Silverman's real story here -- which she won't admit -- is that she has never suffered wage discrimination.

A lot of the feminists pushing this issue haven't suffered it themselves -- but they're sure that someone out there must have.

After all, other feminists say so, don't they?

PJ Media's Scott Ott concludes:

To sum up, let’s follow the Leftist logic.

1) Silverman was recruited because her notoriety might help the cause.

2) She fabricated a story to identify with the cause, and ostensibly with its female victims.

3) She is unmasked as a liar, and now wants you to disassociate her from the cause to which her notoriety and personal identification brought more than 166,000 viewers.

4) If you insist on disagreeing with the cause, you’re a "maniac."

* Well, the club gets a service too; they get to be known as a comic's home club, which is kind of a thing. Like, anyone going to the Laugh Factory might know that Dane Cook could possibly show up any night to do workout material (at least, any night he's not on tour).

I guess that's a Good News Bad News sort of thing with Cook.

But clubs aren't selling tickets based on the possibility Dane Cook could show up to work out his new, raw, and possibly completely unfunny material.

Like, sometimes the material is so poorly received it becomes a news story.

Eh, point is, you don't often get paid for this kind of thing, and if you do get paid, you get paid a scale sort of payment. Like, just to be nice.

Silverman seems to want have been paid more, just because she was A Big Comic by this point.

Fine: But dude, if you're not booked, the club hasn't been able to sell tickets based on your appearance, have they?

Nope. The people coming to that show were coming based on Todd Barry being the booked headliner.

29 It's true that women do make less than men in some cases. But that's because women are shitty negotiators. My sister is a prime example. She got a job that she really wanted, kind of a dream job for her. She told me about it and was all excited. And I asked so how did the salary negotiation go? Her reply was basically...they offered me $X, I took it. And I was like WTF, you never take the first offer, you didn't counter? And she asked, you mean you can do that?

So she probably makes significantly less than a guy doing the exact same job at her company. Not because the CEO hates women, but because he asked for more and she didn't. Yet in the SJW world, my sister is an oppressed victim.

It is always heads I win, tails you lose with these people.

Now on the VERY few occasions that someone is brave enough to challenge them on the lie, and they admit it is a lie, we still don't get to win because, theirlies shouldn't reflect poorly on all the other liars who lie all the time, but for totally good reasons, you guys.

58 Note that the Left is so passionate about these things because of their moral superiority. Hence the ends justify the means and it is perfectly acceptable to lie.

Just note that they were so angry about the immoral stance of the pizza place in Indiana that they cheered bad Yelp reviews.

They encouraged people to lie about a petty thing in order to destroy ordinary people.

Any mature moral code decries lying. Honesty is the key to a functioning civil society and giving people permission to lie is just asking for a horribly dysfunctional culture.

Islam and Social Justice permit lying.

Islam permits lying under warfare conditions - ruses and suchlike. For Shi'ites, there's also "taqiya" (not the same thing); this is where they lie to oppressors under very narrow conditions in order not to get killed. Those oppressors BTW would be Sunni Muslims.

Islam's problem isn't that it allows lying under warfare conditions. So does Christianity. It's that Islam is always under warfare conditions.

EVERYONE thinks they are underpaid and under appreciated, so it's hard to face the cold hard truth that no, you're not.

So plan on this lie coming up and being repeated for all eternity. The only thing Republicans can say is "yes, we need to make sure this doesn't happen" and then don't actually do anything about it because it's simply not a real phenomenon. Women and men make different wages because they make different career choices. Case closed.

I saw a portion of his latest stand-up special and thought it was funny. Particularly his bit about covertly deleting your NSFW phone history after you forget to do so before a first date.

The Dark Knight "shoot me" joke was not his finest hour, to be sure. YMMV. I feel like Dane's another one of those comics most have made their minds up about one way or the other.

yeah it's 90% bullshit. You can see the show that material turned into; it's his newest cable special. On showtime or something.

His material is not all that good (was it ever?) and yeah, there is some stuff that Social Justice Warriors would call anti-woman, and actually, yeah, some of it is still raw, but all that bullshit was ginned up by politically correct censorious types.

Some of his stuff gets into men's complaints about women. Prog trolls whine about this, because they whine about everything.

The show is not very good, I have to say. But that means that Dane Cook is now operating on the level of 80% of all other comics.

114 I watched the original Sarah Silverman video. It's stupid that she made up her example, but her primary message from the original video was, "so what? Ask for a raise, work harder, it'll make you a better person" which while not the RIGHT answer is better then the typical "hate the patriarchy" feminist answer.

The right answer, of course, being that there is no wage discrimination when you control for variables like continuous time in the work place, mostly related to women purposely taking lower paying jobs that allow more flexibility for child rearing.

But her answer was less wrong then the typical one. Not saying we shouldn't beat up on her, but...

...

i heard the most interesting thing about Jay Leno.

He refused, his entire life, to do an HBO special, or any kind of COMEDY ALBUM, even.

note that this is "making it" for most comics, doing the HBO special, releasing the album.

Jay Leno realized the following:

He'd be paid some small amount of money (for him, relatively) for an album or special. Say, $50,000 in the early eighties.

then he'd have to throw out his act because everyone would know the jokes.

So he figured out, on a long-term value level, that his jokes were worth 100x as much as people were willing to pay for them in a special or for an album.

and so 99% of the world has never seen Jay Leno's actual stage act. Supposedly it's incredible, because he's basically been honing this act for about 40 straight years now.

But most of the "jokes" on McFarlane's cartoons aren't jokes, they're rips -- the kind of rips you'd hear at a roast. Roast jokes are the brutal jokes you save for a particular occasion, like, say, a roast.

For instance, a rip on another celebrity such as Tara Reid and predicting her death in the very near future isn't really the type of joke that can support a sitcom. And yet...

Well, most comedians are working to get their own sitcom. Or a supporting role or maybe a movie career. That's the dream, so you need the exposure. They'd take a loss to get a shot at it.

They get tired of the stand-up life traveling, etc.

And even Jay can't do the same bit all the time. If he had to make money just being a stand-up, he'd have to constantly develop new material.

188 Silverman probably owes Rivers and apology of some sort. Rivers was an anomaly as a female stand up comedian. For years it was just her and Phyllis Diller. Maybe Minnie Pearl. Those ladies blazed some trails

It's hard for us to think of, but Rivers was really good-looking in her youth and she played that up. Other stand-up comediennes would often riff on their lack of good looks.

444 Feminism is, first and foremost, a religion. Its adherents are there because they believe in it. There is a creed, and it guides their lives.

Unfortunately, this culture has allowed feminism to creep into all aspects. Our laws, our science, how we interact with one another daily. It does not fit well into those realms, because it comes up against ways of doing things that are not compatible with the basic tenets of the faith.

However, one of the basic tenets of the faith is that when your reality butts up against feminism's truths, it means your reality is and must always be, wrong.

These things are irreconcilable, and that's fine and good and all that, but what I can't understand is why people are still shocked by this. Why people still act like they expected logic and reason from these harpies, only to have the wet, dirty underpants of feminism slapped in their faces once more. It's what they do. It's all they ever do.

I'm rather perturbed at the vulgarity pointed at Lady Thatcher, who was hardly a spring chicken when she became PM. Also, she's a woman worthy of respect not just for her politics, but for being teh awesome.

An SAS tradition is to bring VIPs to the "kill house" and have them sit down acting like a hostage while they burst in and shoot all the "terrorist" targets.....with live ammo. Usually this scares the living shit out of the VIPs. Apparently, the first of many times visiting Hereford, the Lady sat there calmly while her bodyguard dove for cover with bullets flying by. She then got up calmly, and scolded him viciously for embarrassing her.

Dennis was no slouch either. Immediately after the SAS assaulted the Iranian Embassy and killed most of the terrorists who had taken control of it in '80, the Thatchers went to Hereford and had beers with the assault team, supposedly while they were still in their assault gear, smelling of gunpowder and covered in terrorist blood (or at least, that's how the story is often told). Dennis congratulated them on their victory, but then scolded them to their face for leaving one of the terrorists alive.

Does this sound funny to you?

It is the year 2105... a young, inexperienced and highly flawed crew embarks on a routine exploratory space mission. Suddenly, their ship, the UMP Cruiser, is drawn through a portal into a different, mysterious universe. With no maps, no contact, and no way back home, Captain Stewart Lipinski, First Officer/Stewart's-Older-Sister Karen Lipinski and their crew have to learn to work together, all while dealing with mysterious space clouds, food and fuel shortages, robot rebellions, folds in time, and the occasional alien attack.

It stars Trace Beaulieu, an original cast member of MST3K. He did a damn good Crow.

I only mention this, because it was a similar sort of movement, only, doomed because of the general slackness of society which surrounds us.

508 What best characterizes the Commie-fag-junkie?
Male? Ejaculate oozing from his hole, or her hole if she's barely pubescent.
Female? Dismembered fetuses extracted from her vagina, and/or lots of ejaculate oozing from her anus from her multiple unprotected anal sex partners.
The common factor?
NO new human life. Disease is a plus. (The Devil loves contagion.)
A "story", for them, is not art, not heritage, not metaphor: it is Madison Avenue and carbs are good for you, not a necessary evil.

Pfft. Try "U-Boat Commander": most tonnage torpedoed within the allowed time wins. Photographic proof of kill or eyewitness testimony required. If you've got great game, you can bang a lot of cuties and win (it is most tonnage, after all), or you can follow the famous WWII advice and "Go for the heavies!"

Why does this 'accident' not surprise me?

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at April 15, 2015 09:28 PM (60Vyp)

549 This sort of stuff didn't just start happening.

Back in the early '70's I lived in a communal house just off Yale campus. Lot's of college students.

Somehow the topic of slavery came up in some context and a black girl (who was there by means of her parents as this was before Affirmative Action really took hold) piped up with how "she could tell us all about slavery". I looked at her and said "when did you or your parents experience slavery in the US?". That shut her up but I got some dirty looks by a lot of folks. Oh. Well. I've never been shy about calling out BS.

I don't do it anymore cause it doesn't do any good and I don't care.

Everything you see going on in all the Uni's and Colleges all across the country was started in the Ivies 45 years ago. Every bit of it. Some even started 60 years ago as I had a civics teacher who was a stone commie and he made it obvious what he was about.

Which is why I understand how the Conservatives got flanked by the liberals in Media and Academe.

They were in action long before the symptoms ever showed up.

Like cancer; by the time you don't feel good, it's too late.

That's where we're at and why I'm inclined to hurry the process so the recovery can come sooner. Whatever shape it takes.

It's in the contract rules.

I would get berated by the shop steward when I went over quota too often. Told me "don't kill the job". See if too many people went over quota, they'd bring in a time accountant who would retime the process and adjust the bonus level accordingly. (bonus was rewarded on exceeding the quota for a job. some jobs were easy to exceed thus the "don't kill the job".

That's what put the Steel industry in the shitter all those union work rules at union wage rates. Stack them up against some mill in Poland and suddenly they're not so profitable anymore. So all those union jobs went bye bye.

No kid of mine is even going to go there for a visit.

In contrast, Stephen F Austin University in Nacagodoches, TX doesn't even mention diversity in its campus tours. Why not? They actually live it. The student body is well mixed and its not a "thing." It just is what it is. Very noticeable in its absence not being shoved in your face every five minutes about how diverse they are and how tolerant they are and how they are down with the struggle and have costly resources for all the grievance groups. No, the kids are just there to learn and get a good education and get on with life as a productive human being.

Does walmart pay women less - nope. How about random store at the mall - nope.

GM assy line - nope

Teacher - hell no.Full disclosure. My wife is a teacher. There is a pay scale based on years. Everyone is on the same scale. It is gender blind.

Engineer - my particular area - salary is negotiated. Company always starts low. You don't have to take it. And I said same qualifications. Someone with 25 years exp is generally paid more than someone with 5 years.

You don't hear about them because they don't exist. It is

This is where the "pardon" process can come into play.

I knew a couple of "violent felons" in my time in Houston. One was an arsonist who'd burnt down the crackhouse in which he was raised. Another was a guy who shot at the girlfriend-beater who had (earlier) dated his (current) girlfriend, and came knocking.

Maybe the two lied to me. I'll report, though, these two never did *me* wrong; and I never saw them do anyone else wrong.

They each applied for pardons from the State of Texas, and I'd have happily vouched for their character.

But there are others who don't deserve that pardon. Met some of them too.

I've educated liberals and other shitheads on this point. They think that something has an intrinsic value (hence, e.g., upticks in prices of generators after a storm = price gouging). I've asked them how much a glass of water is worth. Whatever they answer, I respond to a man dying of thirst in the desert? To a man drowning in a fresh water lake?

I'd like to think that that makes the point, and they'll have learned something, but in my (increasingly rare) lucid moments, I know that isn't true, and they'll say the same stupid shit five minutes later.

Not at all. Here is a video of a Masten Space Systems test featuring an engine cutoff, free fall, and relight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2Yt5L5TlGM

But the Falcon 9 first stage is by far the largest vehicle that has ever attempted a vertical landing.

Also, it's not capable of hovering like the Xombie test vehicle, or the Apollo Lunar Module. Its Merlin 1D engine can only be throttled down so far. Its thrust/weight ratio >1, which means that it has to reach 0 velocity at exactly the same time it reaches 0 altitude. If it reaches 0 velocity before it touches down, it will start going up again. SpaceX calls it a "hoverslam".

7) You'll never need to buy TP again, because just about everyone in Hollywood will gleefully drop whatever they're doing to come rim you, just to get close to something that got that close to one of their gods.

731 @675: "True for convicted felons? Including those convicted of violent crimes involving firearms?"

Point out the "except for convicted felons, including those convicted of violent crimes involving firearms" language in the Second Amendment. Because that sort of stuff sounds a lot like "infringements" which fall under the "shall not be" part. Equality under the law - it is a bitch.

732 THIS!!!!

@51 In the future, we will all be victims for 15 minutes

well played, alinskyites, well played
