Quote of the Day I

MS: Well, the thing that I thought was interesting about this, and actually indicated a degree of subtle contempt, I thought, from the authorities - either that or we are just beyond parody here - is that they replaced American Sniper with Paddington Bear... If people are going to get... 'Oh, no, I feel threatened and intimidated by seeing American Sniper', then fine. You watch the teddy bear movie. We'll schedule Thomas the Tank Engine. We'll schedule Babe the pig. Oh, wait, no, that would offend all the Muslims, and there'd be a riot. So we won't have that, but we'll find some other children's stuffed character that is safe for you to watch. The logic of the safe space.

HH: I guess Charlotte's Web is off the list, too.

MS: ...is that 23 year old students can only watch Paddington Bear.

-- Mark Steyn on the Hugh Hewitt show.

Quote of the Day II

Walmart critics embrace two moral standards: in the first, morality requires payment of high wages to 1.2 million people. In the second, morality can be achieved without [personally] employing anyone at all - that is, by paying zero wages. Most of us have chosen to live by the second standard, and from our lofty moral position we can criticize Walmart for not meeting the first standard. How convenient!

Quote of the Day III

Usually at this point somebody starts talking about how Hillary Clinton will get the woman vote, how black turnout will stay up there if Barack Obama goes all-in, how rocks fall and everybody dies; the usual, in other words. Which would all be more useful if any of this was ever based on much more than gut feelings.  The truth is, there are a lot of confident people out there when it comes to this election - but very few of them can show their work.

-- Moe Lane

And found their folkways, apparel, and ways of speaking just so fascinating and adorable. She particularly enjoyed the 'gas stations' and impromptu 'Chipotle' festivals which she was able to visit incognito by way of her mufti dress and magical sunglasses.

She also occasionally invited the more impressive specimens into her native-style van for 'chats' as is the custom among middle American hoi polloi.

The Crazy JetBlue Pilot Back in 2012

Luckily the First Officer was alert and quick thinking and it was the pilot who left the cockpit without following protocol.

According to the affidavit filed with the complaint, Osbon, a pilot working JetBlue Flight 191 from New York's John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport to Las Vegas, according to witnesses, arrived at JFK later than he should have for the flight and missed the crew briefing. As the plane was leaving JFK and climbing in altitude in its scheduled five-hour flight, Osbon said something to the first officer (FO) about being evaluated by someone, but the FO did not know what he meant. Osbon then talked about his church and the need to "focus" and asked the FO to take the controls and work the radios. Osbon began talking about religion, but, according to the FO, his statements were not coherent.

The affidavit goes on to say that the FO became concerned when Osbon said "things just don't matter." According to the FO, Osbon yelled over the radio to air traffic control and instructed them to be quiet. Osbon turned off the radios in the aircraft, dimmed his monitors, and sternly admonished the FO for trying to talk on the radio. When Osbon said "we need to take a leap of faith," the FO stated that he became very worried. Osbon told the FO that "we're not going to Vegas" and began giving what the FO described as a sermon.

Two Children, 6 and 10, Playing in a Nearby Park Snatched By Strangers, Held Captive For Two Hours, Parents Threatened

Guy Married Five Months is Terribly Worried That Men Don't Trust Women

And Jazz Shaw's response is just a bit too PC and perfectly even-handed. So let me don my chauvinist hat and state outright that in general women DO overreact - or to be more precise the set of circumstances that provoke a DEFCON 1 reaction in ladies includes things that in no way possibly could be considered a genuine emergency.

So when I hear Mrs. Maetenloch emit a blood-curdling shriek from across the house it could be based on the overtones of terror present be 1) an armed intruder discovered in the bathroom 2) a slashed open major artery or 3) a large spider in the same room. Now statistically it's almost certainly  3) but as I'm running through the house *I* have to be prepared for 1) and 2) and a whole host of other nasty possibilities.

I used to get mad when I would come charging in in full-adrenalin-ready-for-bear mode only to find that it was merely an arachnid hiding behind the toilet, but now I mostly just accept that this is way it is and it's not going to change. So yes I do discount women's reactions mentally - but I still have to react just the same in case it is a legit emergency. Overreaction is a flaw much more common in women than men. Men of course have their own different menu of flaws.

Acetaminophen Reduces Both Pain and Pleasure, Study Finds

So people who are just a little too happy might need a Tylenol mickey.

Researchers studying the commonly used pain reliever acetaminophen found it has a previously unknown side effect: It blunts positive emotions (abstract). Acetaminophen, the main ingredient in the over-the-counter pain reliever Tylenol, has been in use for more than 70 years in the United States, but this is the first time that this side effect has been documented.

104 A good 1" to 1-1/2", sirloin, cast iron skillet, seasonings of choice, half stick of unsalted butter and in my world, a splash of beer as a sear-to-finish.

Absolutely delicious.

Thicker steaks need to either be grilled, or broiled. And if you have access to a Ruth's Chris type, 1,500 to 1,800 degree broiler? All the better.

In the skillet, I turn my steak frequently. Get a good sear, but get it off the heat long enough per side to keep from turning it to leather. Keeps the juices in the middle, too.

Well cut steaks are becoming harder to find at the grocery store. I've been having to ask the butcher to cut 'em to order.

What I need to do, is buy a side of beef and have it all custom cut. Might be wise to buy a freezer first, though, eh?

It was the guy they say did the Anthrax thing.

What happens when you OD on Tylenol is you completely destroy your liver. So even if they get to you fast enough to potentially save you, you're basically in need of a liver transplant that may not coming seeing as though you purposefully destroyed your last one.

So you get to think long and hard about how much you *really* wanted to die, which for most people turns out to be not so much.

Tylenol's really the one you have to look out for. It's toxic at low enough levels that someone could potentially screw themselves without meaning to if they took a cold medicine with Tylenol in it and then took just plain Tylenol a bit later for a headache or something.

Advil is safer, although too much can cause stomach issues so you don't want to go hog wild there either.

It's not about killing the spiders - it's about the fact that the fire alarm, missile tracking warning, collision alarm, tornado alarm, terrain proximity warning, medical code blue alert and air raid siren were all set off to inform us about the presence of a spider that needs killing.

Then she bought the dog a bag of dry dog food.

199 The way I like cooking my steak:

In a cast iron skillet, heat six strips or so of bacon slowly at low temperature so that you render out the fat. While you are doing this add a dry rub of celery salt and ground mace.

When you've rendered enough fat, seat on high both sides of the steak.

Turn off heat and add bacon back to pan and place steak on top. Add a bit of spicy mustard to the top of the steak and add on top of that chopped up garlic. Add water chestnuts to the bacon.

Cook 5 to 8 minutes (depending on steak size) in an oven heated 350-380 deg F.

Flip the steak. Ad a bit of salsa verda to the top of the steak and layer on a good melty cheese. Turn the water chestnuts.

After another 5 to 8 minutes you'll have a tasty steak with bacon and nice flavorful, but still crunchy, water chestnuts.

certainly 3) but as I'm running through the house *I* have to be prepared for 1) and 2) and a whole host of other nasty possibilities"

Even with my extremely limited dating experience, this is something I know about firsthand. I remember once, when I was a teenager, my stepdad was out of the house and I was just hanging out in my basement. My mom suddenly started screaming my name, and I ran upstairs. "What's wrong, Mom?" She pointed at the couch, and I saw a spider hanging out there. "Kill it!", she commanded me. "Oh, okay, Mom. Don't worry; I got this." I grabbed some toilet paper, squashed the spider and flushed it down the toilet.

Being an old-fashioned guy in some ways, I felt pretty good about that. It is a man's duty to kill spiders for the women he loves, after all.

Most of the scorpions you see are not the black desert kind. They're the little yellow/brown cousins. Sting is about like a bee or wasp, maybe a little more.

274 Most snakes don't bother me too bad. Of course, gotta watch for rattle-buggers.

But racers will scare my shit every damn time. Racers are big. They will sit absolutely still until you are damn near right on top of them and then suddenly jump up and make all kinds of activity. Scare the Hell outta you.
Posted by: Ricardo Kill at April 14, 2015 12:01 AM

The problem w/ snakes is the creepy surprise. I ran across a big one in the barn, I think it was a spotted adder in local parlance.

Broke the end off a hoe killing it. Next day drove in and drove right over another the same size. Didn't kill it so I had to find another tool.

They were actually non poisonous and good to have around, but the surprise element was too much. Glad I got rid of them.

It depends on where you live. In Arizona, the only scorpion you'll see
is the centruroides and it's the most poisonous scorpion in North
America. I've killed hundreds of them. I hunt them outside at night with
a black light since they glow green. It helps prevent most (but not all) of them from
ending up in the house. It's a minor miracle I've never been stung.

281 I order my steaks Medium. Mainly because I feel Medium is the best mix of "done" and "seared" and "juicy", but also because so many restaurants don't get the "cookedness" of steaks quite right, and you'll often end up with something a little over or under the cookedness you requested. I'm also fine with Medium-Rare or Medium-Well. By requesting "Medium", I can be sure I'll get something I'll like.

290 As a general rule, I'll leave most spiders alone. Mostly around here we have the little wolf spiders, and they're ok. Did you know that if every spider on the face of the planet died tomorrow, we would be over run by insect hordes inside a week?
On the other hand, I came back to my old beater after being on the road for about a month and I had a flat on the beater. Jacked up the car and pulled the flat tire, and there was a mama black widow with about a thousand little tykes. I poured gasoline on the tire and fried all their happy asses. I think there may have been a disturbance in the arachnid force. Didn't see them again after that.

303 Just wanted to share that I got served with a summons to testify at a trial. I'd already gotten the notice in the mail. I was taking my dog out to the truck when I saw the cop car and my first thought was "I gotta get her into the truck before the cop shoots her". And that is how a basically law abiding citizen views the cops. (The trial is bs. The guy got busted when 19 for touching a fully clothed 16 year old girl on the breast. He's had to register as a sex offender ever since. It was a misdemeanor that he did 70 days community service and house arrest for. But he never bothers to register so they try to say it was a felony. The guy is a jerk but has never reoffended. So I'll get to miss a half day from work because he was on my property when arrested, even though I helped the cops find him to arrest. )

I am told you can find rattlers around Cottage Grove and further south. I nearly fell over one east of Medford once, but that is way south.

The bull snakes look and act like rattlers, though. Non poisonous but they will rear up, and will whip their tails in the brush like a rattler will. Makes snake fearers like me all sorts of twitchy.

328 I mailed a letter to the Queen of England today. May 8, 2015 is the seventieth anniversary of VE day. Most people, especially in the US, don't know that the British Empire (of the 1940's) had more soldiers in direct combat with enemy forces until the American buildup in Europe surpassed them in August of 1944 and possibly the Soviets. This was in all theaters.
If Britain had not held in the summer, early fall of 1940, the world we live in would be a very different place.
I thanked her for the courage and the sacrifice of the men and women of Great Britain and the Commonwealth for breaking the wave of Nazi tyranny.
That we've squandered that sacrifice makes me sad.

345 SpaceX had to scrub its planned CRS-6 launch to the ISS on Monday due to the weather.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s3LftIdvFY

A thunderstorm wandered too close to the launch site, and with an instantaneous launch window, there was no time to wait until it passed. Lightning is a hazard to rockets that are launching, and winds at high altitudes can cause aerodynamic stresses that could cause the rocket to break up. So it's prudent not to launch in these circumstances.

There is an opportunity for another attempt on Tuesday at 4:10 pm EDT, but the forecast doesn't look any better. Conditions in the Cape Canaveral area are ripe for generating afternoon thunderstorms.

Aside from the primary mission of delivering cargo to the ISS, they will use this flight to attempt a soft landing aboard the Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship Just Read the Instructions. The first landing attempt in January failed when the control fins ran out of hydraulic fluid, and a second attempt in February was cancelled due to rough seas. On that flight, the first stage made a mock soft landing in the ocean which was nearly perfect.

Indeed. And I would like to say that he is wrong, but my confidence level is very low. Consider that his final argument (as opposed to hard demographic facts) reflects what the MSM are thinking, and how they will treat the campaign:

"The argument for Clinton in 2016 is that she is the candidate of the only major American political party not run by lunatics. There is only one choice for voters who want a president who accepts climate science and rejects voodoo economics, and whose domestic platform would not engineer the largest upward redistribution of resources in American history. Even if the relatively sober Jeb Bush wins the nomination, he will have to accommodate himself to his party's barking-mad consensus. She is non-crazy America’s choice by default. And it is not necessarily an exciting choice, but it is an easy one, and a proposition behind which she will probably command a majority."

The fiancee has a relatively simple fact-pattern (no oil and gas royalties, no small business, rentals, farms, or pass-through entities), and the thing is still close to 40 pages of crap. Then you turn to the California return, which is exclusively machine-readable, that you have to sign-off on under penalty of perjury....

I've read your satire/argument for men's equal right to an abortion, and I have a suggestion that turns it into a real argument.

No one will ever agree to forcing a woman to have an abortion because the man demands it. At the same time, you have a good argument that the man contributes one half of the genetic material, yet has NO voice. So to change it, the man must have a say as well. Equal rights, and all that. So here are the new rules:

1. Only the biological father has any potential responsibility.
2. The woman, as soon as she realizes she is pregnant, must notify all possible fathers that they may be involved so that a paternity test can be conducted.
3. The biological father can decide to bear none, some or all responsibility for the child, which is the same decision that the woman can currently make; remember, equal rights.
4. Unless the biological father chooses 'all', he is responsible for paying for one half of the abortion if she so chooses that option. If she chooses not to abort, then the father is responsible only up to the point he has agreed to in writing.
5. Married couples should have some special rules that still take the father's equal rights into consideration.

Hey, it's a Brave New World.

In CO, you go get a drivers license and they ask you if you want to register to vote. They are all union workers and they really don't give a rats ass if you are eligible to vote or not. Not their job. Since the illegal DL is new to CO, I would imagine that the illegal vote will go up substantially this next election cycle.

I hate to say this in this venue.....but I'm actually (mostly) pro-choice.....but it shocks and horrifies me that there's a human being walking around out there who was born at 21 weeks and five days [ http://tinyurl.com/jwy7qrw -- we share a birthday!], while abortions take place at 23 weeks.

And it seems to me that those facts open up a graceful way to square that circle. Abortion should be legal up until two weeks before the earliest surviving "premature birth" -- with "premature birth" defined as removal from the mother's womb. If technology develops to the point where a fetus can be removed from its mother's womb at 8 weeks and be a kid some years later, that should be pretty straightforward.

I'm agreeing with you as a Pro-Life type. It might make a reasonable political point. We're probably not going to ever be able to get the genie back into the bottle. That's just the horrible reality of things. A standard based on viability (including technologically-assisted viability) would be a huge step in the pro-life direction from where we currently are.

And that's one of the reasons why I'm a Pro-Life type. Once you begin arguing where human life begins, you can rationalize almost anything. It's not murder at 21 weeks. It's not murder at 30 weeks. It's not murder at 52 weeks... It's not murder at 2000 weeks...

If you draw a hard line at "if it's genetically human and alive, it's a human life with a right to life", there's no slippery slope to go sliding down.

You'll note that I feel able to say what I said here.

I think a lot of the problem that we have as a nation in discussing abortion is that we all have caution lights and red lines -- but we've been conditioned to conceal them and harden our most extreme positions in order to protect room to maneuver. "Pro-choice" types like to stake out an outer perimeter somewhere about 1-2 years after actual birth; "Pro-life" types would say that once a sperm could sense an ovum and move toward it, conception was practically a "done-deal".

In reality, a lot of pro-lifers can't get that excited about a 300-cell blastocyst, and a lot of pro-choicers would be repulsed at the thought of a 22-week abortion.

I've come to a conclusion on special snowflake syndrome, too. The whole genders thing is essentially assigning a sex to the soul which can be separate from (and overrides) the sex of the body. It's entirely based on emotions, there's no science or reason behind it... it's essentially a religious belief. Let's go with that line, it'll wedge the sexually confused from the atheists, and give us a method of legally shutting it down.

If their ideas about spiritual genders are a religious belief - and one could very well argue that they are - then instituting public policy based on them is a flagrant violation of the Separation of Church & State, and the 1st Amendment as it constitutes a law respecting the establishment of religion.

Prayer for Our Courts and Judges

Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of our nation.
You alone rule the world with justice,
Yet you place in our hands the solemn duty
of participating in the shaping of our government.
I pray today for our President and Senators
Who have the responsibility of placing judges on our courts.
Please protect this process from all obstruction.
Please send us men and women of wisdom,
Who respect Your law of Life.
Please send us judges with humility,
Who seek Your truth and not their own opinions.
Lord, give all of us the courage we need to do what is right
And to serve you, the Judge of all, with fidelity.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen!

====I guess it has been over a year. The first one was a failure in geometry. I am not sure if I screwed up the layout or if it just moved too much while curing after the steam bending. I have been a lot more careful with this one. It still changes a lot tho. I hope it settles in with the right shape. If not I may have to burn the house down.

I hope you bought those clamps all at the same time, so you could get the volume discount.

===some one told me once: "you can't have too many clamps." At the time I thought they were joking. I've come around to agreement. However, I also think it's reasonable to throw away any clamp that pisses you off.

Our house was built in 1955 -- it's older than I am. It was originally an L-shaped plan of about 1300 square feet with a garage forming the front leg of the L. In 1986, the existing garage was converted into a family room and a new garage was added, boosting it to 1700 feet and turning it into a U. In addition, the original non-garage leg of the L was extended by about 8 feet, putting the total at around 1900.

In practice, this means that every part of the house has its peculiarities. If I start at the northeast corner, it's the family-room converted from a garage in 1986 -- the walls have insulation, it's 3-conductor romex. Continuing south along the perimeter, you pass a wall and are in the mudroom -- 1950's, no insulation, 2-conductor romex with added ground. A bit more and we're in the living room -- the wall was paneling over studs, but is now insulated drywall. most of the wiring is 2-conductor with added ground. Turn the corner, and the wall isn't insulated, but the large double-french-double-sidelight door is.

Point being, it may well have been simpler if the house would've burned down.

510 I just want to make it clear, y'all don't have to refer to me as xie, xer, or Mx. She, her and Ms. Jenner are just peachy. I'm an old fashioned girl at heart.

Seriously, Cato articulates an interesting point, that this is essentially a claim about something immaterial, hence spiritual. I've seen activists try to conflate this with 'intersex' conditions, but those are physical conditions. They usually drop out of the discussion when I point that out (eg. Zoe Brain).
