I have read some of it and while it doesn't really seem to do a whole lot for business, it actually won't hurt us. Between us, we don't even come close to $150,000 a year income. Some of what I read was way "in the weeds" and hard to understand. What say you guys about this plan? Really would love some opinions.

Posted by: jewells45 at April 16, 2015 10:41 AM (l/N7H)

86 "We want you to live in an apartment complex. "

Ok, speaking of that the husband and I saw a very weird thing while driving across East Texas (shocking I know) and I'd love to get the horde's input.

So we drive into this itty bitty town, population 600 or something, and we see their school. To the left of the school is a new 500+ unit apartment complex. What. does everyone in town live in those apartments?

The only thing we could guess is that it was built for oil workers or something, but I'm not sure we were near anything like that.

Why? Why would they build a huge apartment complex in a town without a stop light?

Lee seems just a bit naïve according to that Federalist link in the dump. I mentioned as much in the comments there yesterday.

Any plan that isn't a flat tax of no more than 10% coupled with a mandatory balanced budget, (and by "balanced budget" I mean hard jail time for any congresscritter or bureaucrat that dares even suggest $1 over that) I don't consider it worth considering.

New company/factory/something moving in would be my first guess, although it reminds me of the huge scientology mini-city back home in/near clearwater, fl. Who knows what all groups are doing stuff like this in America now.

But a new factory, or maybe like a prison or a mental hospital or something was built or is under construction. You know it's not a coal-fired power plant though, those are being phased out so they will have a plausible excuse to cut the power on us ten hours a day.

When I was a teenager and young adult, there wasn't much I wouldn't try. Now that I'm older, I look back, and realize that I took a lot of chances. Frankly, I'm surprised I'm still here.

I think people between the ages of, say, 15-30 often don't have enough life experience to really understand how some actions that can seem harmless can have very long term repercussions on their lives. It was certainly true in my case.

If I told you even a small part of the list of unbelievably stupid reckless shit I did, some of it would be fun in a "we can laugh about it now" way, and quite a bit of it would gross you all out and horrify you. But it all seemed okay to me at the time, because I thought I knew every fkn thing back then. Now, I'm mostly afraid of the amount of stuff I *don't* know! it was more fun back then, and easier, in a lot of ways, that's for sure, lol.

My opinion is that adults have an obligation to demonstrate some restraint and to act as a braking force on the kind of energy that teenagers and young adults have. So the question, "Who was hurt" isn't always possible to answer clearly, in these things.

But releasing all inhibitions and abandoning all limits, this absolutely has a cost, and it very nearly killed me. I don't necessarily take the position that no one should do it, because that was the only way I could learn, was to go through that process. Nobody was going to stop me, nobody. Jail didn't stop me, wrecking my motorcycle didn't stop me, almost ruining my marriage didn't stop me, having cops point their guns at me didn't stop me. Some of us are thick-headed and just have to learn this crap for ourselves, and can't be spared from it, that's my belief.

But if anyone does choose to go through that, they must first accept that they might die or have their life destroyed. So that's why I think there is merit in the grownups being buzzkills, and at least not providing the "no inhibitions" scene to young people, who are still trying to figure a lot of stuff out. We are all pretty good at getting ourselves in trouble, and somebody needs to be the voice of reason and restraint, judgement and experience. My understanding is that this is a part of what grownups are supposed to do.

I do not say that celibacy until marriage is the only way, and I will not say that young adults 18+ should never, ever try drugs or alcohol. But I do say that they should know the risks, and that it can wreck your life, very easily, and that parents and grownups need to provide a stable framework to catch young people when they do, inevitably, get into trouble with this stuff, whether that trouble is big or small. Actions have consequences, cause and effect. Pretending that there are not logical consequences to our actions is not a kindness to young people, in my opinion.

So that's my 2 cents on this.

Reality, as the saying goes, has a liberal bias. It turns out that concerns over the "politicization of science" were themselves subject to politicization.

I mean, that story has something for everyone.

But when the argument is that no-one was hurt during the making of this film, you sort of lose track of the fact that there is a 16 year old girl, in her morally formative years, who's only response was that if she herself were sexually large enough to handle her hung like a horse boyfriend, then he wouldn't have had to hit the mom.

That's some seriously whacked emotional development for a 16 year old. And I'm betting that her mother contributed directly to her arrested mental/moral development.

Posted by: Nip Sip at April 16, 2015 11:37 AM (0FSuD)

I don't have kids so I try to not to come off as a knowitall on the subject (I am a knowitall more than I mean to be). All I know for sure is that I thought I had it all figured out when I was younger, and it turns out I didn't, and I think that's probably pretty common. Also I was raised to respect my elders. I didn't always do it, but I was taught that it is right. I think that's part of what has gone wrong with this country, is that that hierarchy has been dismantled.

I'm not sure what the "darwin theory of teenagers growing up" means.

300 T9 - Sent to me by AF Lifer BIL. Probably a standing AF joke:
----------

A US Air Force C-141 was scheduled to leave Thule Air Base, Greenland, at midnight during a winter month. During the pilot's pre-flight check, he discovers that the latrine holding tank is still full from the last flight. So a message is sent to the base and an airman who was off duty is called out to take care of it.

The young man finally gets to the air base and makes his way to the aircraft only to find that the latrine pump-truck has been left outdoors and is frozen solid, so he must find another one in the hangar, which takes even more time.

He returns to the aircraft and is less than enthusiastic about what he has to do. Nevertheless, he goes about the pumping job deliberately and carefully (and slowly) so as not to risk criticism later.

As he's leaving the plane, the pilot stops him and says, "Son, your attitude and performance has caused this flight to be late and I'm going to personally see to it that you are not just reprimanded but punished."

Shivering in the cold, his task finished, he takes a deep breath, stands tall and says, "Sir, with all due respect, I'm not your son; I'm an Airman in the United States Air Force. I've been in Thule, Greenland for 11 months without any leave, and reindeer's asses are beginning to look pretty good to me. I have one stripe, it's 2:30 in the morning, the temperature is 40 degrees below zero, and my job here is to pump shit out of an aircraft."

"Now, just exactly what form of punishment did you have in mind?"
