9 Long rant I just posted in Ace's 'Kill Your television' thread. Sorry for scroll finger exercise if you find it boring...

Yes, cut the cable. When you're connected to the 'retention specialist' please mention MSNBC as one of the reasons. Mention no 'a la carte' pricing as another. They've given the consumer and conservatives the finger for too long. Keep your internet and wi-fi though.

You're now saving around $800 bucks a year. Some of that money went to MSNBC. Feel better already?

Now in my opinion an Amazon Prime account at $99 a year and a $39 Amazon Fire Stick is the best combo for watching online content. Amazon is the best of capitalism right now. They are constantly improving the product while keeping the price constant. They probably have thousands of LIFETIMES of content available. Want to watch history? A LIFETIME of content available. Science? A LIFETIME of content available. Movies? Many LIFETIMES of content available. First run movies? They are there for a reasonable fee. Remember you're still saving $600 plus dollars per year. Splurge a little.

Everything works. It's truly amazing technology. Commercial free. Pause if you want. Rewind. Fast forward. Exit and come back and it returns to where you left off.

Start with this setup. More online content is on the way. Add a subscription to Netfix for another $100 a year. It works with the Fire Stick. Same with HuluPlus. Some satellite providers are preparing to enter the game. There are probably hundreds of Apps for the Fire Stick now, with more on the way. Stream free music. It will 'learn' what you like and create playlists for you to choose from.

Sure, reducing the amount of time in front of the television is good. I also believe in optimizing the quality of ones television experience. Learn something in the process; learn the history of Hawaii while taking a HD helicopter tour of the islands as I did recently. Breathtaking experiences are there at your fingertips.

But for the love of G-d, cut the cable and stop feeding the MSM and MSNBC.

10 Interesting thread yesterday about getting rid of TV. Mrs. JTB and I had a long discussion about it and there will be more this weekend. I suspect sometime this year we'll make the decision to kill it.

Yeah, definitely have to get the percolator going.

31 The Secret Service reportedly is being accused of leaking private information on how Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz, one of the agency's toughest critics, was rejected for a job there more than a decade ago.

So they "apologized". Why isn't someone being fired and charged with a crime? Oh, they are "investigating". So why did they apologize? I suspect the investigation will be completed about a year after the next election. This has been the standard foot dragging and delaying tactics of this corrupt administration.

53 Obama to bring in another round of Hispanics from Central America in a program that classifies them as refugees and makes them eligible for citizenship bypassing the normal immigration process which again, is illegal.
__________________________

They're not even bothering anymore with the fiction that these people are in any kind of danger in their home countries -- which is what is supposed to be established before one can claim "refugee" status. No, they're just handing out "refugee" status like it's Halloween candy -- even though it entitles the "refugee" to the full panoply of federal (and many state) welfare benefits.

This insanity -- all of which is blatantly illegal -- will end up costing U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars every year for decades, and that is on top of the hundreds of billions of dollars a year we're already spending on the millions of illegal aliens already living in the U.S. and sucking up enormous public resources. The situation was already bad enough, but now Obama is rubbing our faces in it by using our money to FLY more illegal alien poor into the country.

This is more than an outrage; it is clear treason. We already have record numbers of Americans out of work, and we've got $17 trillion in debt, and hundreds of trillions more in unfunded liabilities. The last thing we need, or can afford, is to be flying in thousands more unskilled, uneducated, poor foreigners to park themselves on our welfare rolls.

And meanwhile, the useless fuckwits in the Republican party sit on their thumbs and do nothing to stop Obama's lawlessness.

61 Inconstant Moon by Larry Niven

I think I remember that story, but it's within my price range so grabbed a copy and will re-read it.

Interesting to see it mentioned as just last night re-watched the movie "Knowing" with Nicholas Cage.

It has a sad ending. I cried. The people behave somewhat irrationally which is frustrating. You want to see your heros being heroic, not in a panic. Kinda fits the mode of the moment.

62 Alix Bryan has apparently lawyered up and posted this on her twitter account.

https://twitter.com/alixbryan/status/584180649050898432

In order to truly savor this letter, watch a few episodes of "Better Call Saul" to appreciate the creativity of her new story.

Her basic contention is that she is a lousy researcher and a lousy reporter. That is not a crime. It is, however, something that her employers ought to fire her over. The link to Ms.Bryan's twitter feed on the station's web site indicates some level of endorsement. I knew who had set up the GoFundMe site long before she did and I do not claim to be either a researcher or a reporter. Research and reporting skills are what CBS6 theoretically pay her for. If CBS6 does not fire her, they are making a public statement that they are content with incompetent researchers and that the quality of their reporting is abysmally low.

Her claim that she was concerned that people supporting the beleagured pizza shop owners were being swindled is laughable. It is refuted by her earlier posts that she refers to in her lawyer authored statement. Ms.Bryant would be delighted to see a bunch of homophobic rubes get swindled.

If Alix Bryant were a real reporter instead of a Social Justice Warrior with access to the megaphone of a news organization, she would have researched the that the initial story was ginned up by another young female reporter who took advantage of the naivete of some small town pizza shop owner. The reporter got her story and the life of the naive woman was turned upside down. That sort of stuff has been going on since the first newspaper was printed and the first reporter needed a story by deadline.

While Alix Bryant and other junior reporters might learn a lesson about being more circumspect in their social media postings from this episode, the rest of us should take away the lesson that the only response one should ever give to a reporter is the same response one should give to the police, "Talk to my lawyer."

Now?
17 Channels, including the major three side channels, all in HD.

Fios is coming to our block next week, and I am considering imply the digital phone, and 50/50 internet with no TV. Then take the new Roku3 that we bought last week, and with the Amazon Prime, which we already have, and HuluPlus, that should cover everything we need.

78 Vic,
I looked at NM & found its a very poor state, liberal, high crime. What more can a state have wrong with it before ruling it out? As of late yesterday afternoon he hasn't found anywhere yet.

Illegals are all over the place & more to come, but I don't want to live near Mexican border. They're a big problem in NM too.
They're in Massachusetts too. We have quite a few Sanctuary cities.

83 @74 Not an expert, but I did used to dispatch biggish amounts of cash every day, back when there was real money, and it had to be handled. Every cash pouch would have an ink-spray packet in there, so if it was roughly opened the bills would be "self-marking." I'd imagine that for regularly scheduled cash shipments, a company like Brinks would do something similar.

OTOH, I've encountered red-tinted bills out in the real world many times, and nobody freaked out. With the New Money we have now, you have to wonder if anybody would even notice.

I would have to drill a hole through the wall and I do not want to do that just for TV. And I have two of those little plastic square antennas. They have a metal grid of some kind inside the square and they do pick up pretty good, but only if you have signal to begin with. Those high frequency digital signals are really quirky and line of site only.

My opinion on the Camaro was established back when I was on site at a project for several weeks. I had gotten a Taurus at the car rental place but several of the other people working on site had Camaros. They told me that I could just go back to the car rental place and exchange the Taurus for a Camaro. Well, I was single at the time and that sounded like a good idea. The road between the airport where the car rental place was and the town where the job site was is one that I had driven frequently in the Taurus without concern and while fiddling with the radio. It was a different experience in the Camaro. I did not dare take my hands off the wheel and I probably drove the whole way 10 miles an hour slower. The four door Taurus handled better, had better visibility, had better acceleration and better braking. The Camaro looked sportier and had a better radio.

I have never forgotten that lesson.

92 @81 In the glory days of Secret Service, they used to call those exquisite craftsmen a "Penman Jim." There were many cases of guys spending more time on a bill than its face value was worth. It was the thrill, and the artisanship, you see.

IIRC that marking ink had a scent to it too. Supposed to be a dead giveaway, "Why, nobody would take that." Times have certainly changed. So has the S.S.

One of the first things you used to do when you went to war, in Westphalian States, was heavily counterfeit the enemy's currency. There are some movies about that, particularly death-camp inmates who lived only for their forgery skills. Imagine someone trying to inflate our currency, or the E.U.'s? It is to laugh.

93 I have never owned a Camero. I did have a 1979 Mustang but that was a bad year for all cars. That 79 Mustang was a 4 cylinder POS. I traded it in on a V6 Mustang convertible a few years later. There are approved minorities that get power to enforce against unapproved ones.

118 Darth Randall (#104) -

Short answer: No.

The Left's rules are arbitrary, ginned up case by case. As a way of entertaining myself, I tried to figure out the logic behind political correctness and, based on this logic, I came up with a new PC rule:

Don't say "Westerns" as a genre of entertainment. Call them "frontier stories" instead.

My logic was this: A lot of people lived in the Western United States in the 19th century, but only the white people went west to get there. (The Indians, whose ancestors came over the land bridge, went south; the Mexicans went north; the Chinese went east.) So to call it "the West" is America-centric at best and white-person-centric (i.e., racist) at worst.

When I tried out my new rule on left-wing acquaintances, it fell flat.

My take-away is that the real foundation of political correctness is that someone comes up with a rule and dammit you follow it - not that there's any underlying reason behind it.

He's very optimistic about America and thinks we're on the verge of another Reagan era. Even spoke without a note card or dummy prompter. One lady asked that he promise *not* to listen to the big GOP cronies, Chamber of Commerce types and consultants that ruin every other Republican candidate. He was very adamant that he's bypassing them and the media to reach out directly to Americans. Only time will tell how it all pans out, and I have no doubt his road will be tough. Long knives are out on both sides and the MFM will continue to slaughter him. But he sure had a lot of people come out yesterday to see him. And I saw lots of young men, in the 18 year old range as well. One even brought a copy of the Constitution hoping for an autograph.

You can make the argument that even if you don't believe it, traditional religion is kind of like really stable software, Version 99999 with most of the bugs worked out over the last couple of thousand years. They generally respond that they are so smart that they can figure out a better way. It is kind of like the "socialism never worked before because the right people were not in charge but this time is different" argument.

I then generally move on to the argument that you may not believe it and think that religion is silly but keep in mind the Sepoy Mutiny. I think it is silly to worry about biting off the end of a paper cartridge that has been greased with lard or beef tallow but a lot of other people took that seriously and a great deal of unpleasantness resulted. If you would like to avoid unpleasantness, don't poke people for the hell of it. The Muslims seem to understand how this works.

First, she feels really, really strongly about the gay wedding stuff.

Then she says she was only trying to protect the people who disagree with her on the gay wedding stuff.

Because her integrity and her sense of justice transcend her politics, especially in regards an issue that she feels really, really, really strongly about.

And is there any data cap with that?

No data cap on internet. Only restriction is the speed per second. Use a little, use a lot, same price -- 74.99/month.

Here's how I work it -- my smartphone/cellphone service is with Consumer Cellular @ about 32.50 per month. Two phones, about 200 texts per month, and very small data. I quickly figured out I could turn *their* data off and use my own wi-fi for data. Once I leave the house I turn their data back on -- if the need arises.

Story of Obama! Story of Obama!

I sound like Great-Aunt Tillie when I blame this on the Beatles, but, hey. The hipsterization of America proceeded apace, according to LIFE, in the Summer of Sgt Pepper's. Many's the time I've seen a swell hep notion (like "Not A Western" cited above) slouch around for a while yet never make it to Bethlehem. There's a committee someplace, like the paint guys who decide what color everything is going to be next season, who meet like the Stonecutters and decide what's hip now. Without that blessing, swing away, but you'll never be a Media God. So, not the Fab Four's fault, but they're the paradigm.

Case in point, 1965 London interview with Paul Simon, in which he dismisses Tolkien as "Aryan fairy tales." Maybe he had the wrong Ring, there.

This is actually not that uncommon.
We, and at least ten of our neighbors have had the exact same thing take place. I would not presume that it was an individual specifically targeting only our number.
We have a distinctive phone prefix, and it seems that they choose to spoof local numbers in an effort to influence people to answer a call based on the fact that they recognize the prefix.

Your situation may be different, but here, it's pretty common across all our community residents.

200 @194 What She Said.

So, John Renbourn died the other day, at his remote rural estate, full of years wisdom and pretty good wine. I saw Jacqui MacShee a few years ago (People's Repooblik AnnArbor) and requested one of my favourite Pentangle songs, "Light Flight," which was the theme of a BBC TV show called Take Three Girls. She told me, "Honestly we haven't done that song in decades." Sorry silly me.

And for Renbourn's obit, they post a video of the Pentangle reunion concert, just a few weeks before Jansch died, and what's the feature number? Light Flight.

Well, at least they listened. Here it is, if you like that kind of thing:

Atheists always tell me that they can be good people without belief in God. (Charles Cooke said as much on the podcast a few weeks ago.) Sure that's true of individual atheists - although atheists do not seem to realize that they developed their ethics in a society steeped in 2000 years of Christianity. The Greeks and Romans saw nothing wrong with leaving infant girls to die (come to think of it, neither does Obama - the doctor can just leave them on the table grasping for breath.) The idea that the weak and powerless have souls and are loved by God would have been considered utterly ridiculous by them.

Actually, I think that what we are seeing now underscores the thesis that if Judeo-Christianity is pushed out of the public square, people will behave worse, not better. The same people who are sure that they don't need a God to behave decently tend to be the same people who think it's perfectly fine to ruin the lives of a couple in Indiana and a old lady in Washington State for the crime of not thinking correct thoughts. These are the people who will lie and slander in the name of whatever they think is a just cause.

"We can be good without God" - doesn't look that that's playing out too well in real life, does it?

Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. (brandishing ampersands) at April 04, 2015 09:20 AM (+XMAD)

202 Donna &&&&&& V. -

My other retort to atheists is one I take more seriously. After they get all done with their arguments - that life came to be randomly, that intelligence evolved, and that their particular intelligence is superior to mine as evidence by their atheism - I say something like this:

"You seem to have a high opinion of yourself. Yet my opinion of you is higher. You see yourself as an organized pile of atoms. I see you as a child of God, a reflection of His image and nature, and a carrier of something divine."

As for being good without God, you make some great points. Good without God? Maybe. But these people are awash in the arguably secular 7 deadly sins, aren't they? Do they think their evolved minds and enlightened ideas make them immune from the consequences of excessive pride?

203 Cutting the cable:

Over the past dozen years, I've had Time-Warner, DirecTV, and now U-Verse (landline, internet, cable TV). Mrs Mike Golf noted that we no longer watch Fox News, so the things we watch on TV are PBS Masterpiece, some special events (Disney Live and Sing Off come to mind), and football in the fall. We discussed going OTA and are in the process of switching over. Currently, we use Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix. We buy DVD/BluRay disks with digital versions and put those on Vudu.

Picked up a DB4 UHF antenna for $5 (new, open box) at a charity auction. Plenty of cable, ground blocks, splitters to re-use. Out-of-pocket: proper cable tools, bag of F connectors, amplifier from Radio Shack, and a couple of small bags of coax mounting clips. Recycled the sat dish mount for an antenna mast. Took two evenings (stopped working it at sunset).

I am an hour each from Cleve and Youngstown. I get 50+ channels. Once I get a DVR, I'll cut the cable.
