Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Interview With a Law Professor, Hiding In the Christian ClosetI spent a long time on the phone last night with a law professor at one of the country’s elite law schools. This professor is a practicing Christian, deeply closeted in the workplace; he is convinced that if his colleagues in academia knew of his faith, they would make it very hard for him. We made contact initially by e-mail -- he is a reader of this blog -- and last night, by phone. He agreed to speak with me about the Indiana situation on condition that I not identify him by name or by institution.... I will call him Prof. Kingsfield, after the law professor in The Paper Chase. ... Like me, what unnerved Prof. Kingsfield is not so much the details of the Indiana law, but the way the overculture treated the law. "When a perfectly decent, pro-gay marriage religious liberty scholar like Doug Laycock, who is one of the best in the country -- when what he says is distorted, you know how crazy it is." "Alasdair Macintyre is right," he said. "It's like a nuclear bomb went off, but in slow motion." What he meant by this is that our culture has lost the ability to reason together, because too many of us want and believe radically incompatible things.I think this is a very common conclusion people are coming to -- the center cannot hold, and we're tired of trying to make it hold. We are heading for a national rupture. Divorce is best done quickly. I do not wish to spend further years in a bad marriage. Divorce is coming, and so it should come quickly. But only one side has the power. When I asked Kingsfield what most people outside elite legal and academic circles don't understand about the way elites think, he said "there’s this radical incomprehension of religion." "They think religion is all about being happy-clappy and nice, or should be, so they don’t see any legitimate grounds for the clash," he said. "They make so many errors, but they don’t want to listen." To elites in his circles, Kingsfield continued, "at best religion is something consenting adult should do behind closed doors. They don’t really understand that there’s a link between Sister Helen Prejean's faith and the work she does on the death penalty. There's a lot of looking down on flyover country, one middle America. "The sad thing," he said, "is that the old ways of aspiring to truth, seeing all knowledge as part of learning about the nature of reality, they don't hold. It's all about power. They've got cultural power, and think they should use it for good, but their idea of good is not anchored in anything. They’ve got a lot of power in courts and in politics and in education. Their job is to challenge people to think critically, but thinking critically means thinking like them. They really do think that they know so much more than anybody did before, and there is no point in listening to anybody else, because they have all the answers, and believe that they are good." On the conservative side, said Kingsfield, Republican politicians are abysmal at making a public case for why religious liberty is fundamental to American life. "The fact that Mike Pence can’t articulate it, and Asa Hutchinson doesn’t care and can’t articulate it, is shocking,” Kingsfield said. It's a long piece and if you like that there's more where that came from. *** I disagree. This is completely wrong. It is preciously because the academic left understands the purpose of organized religion that they hate it so, and so wish to destroy it. To wit, the point of organized religion, at least the various flavors of Christianity in the western world, is to provide a world view independent of the State. Such independent thought is dangerous to the notion of "fundamental change" led from and for an all encompassing state. Posted by: John Boehner at April 03, 2015 01:03 PM (78TbK) 12

The thing is, nearly all the old homophobia is gone. Anything on the net is just part of the usual "we're not face to face so I'll show my ass" kinda stuff.
We did an inservice yesterday with a black LGBT health advocacy group. The presenter handed out pictures of various young men and told us to tell him our first thoughts. After we said our piece, he would respond with things like "What if I told you X was bisexual?" and everybody was like "Soooo-? WTF difference does that make?" You could tell it was compleat FAIL becoz the presenter wrapped it up with a lame "Well, I just wanted to show you that..." and then showed a lot of youtube videos. Our political "thought" is being driven by the young, ill-educated cult followers of a fundamentally unAmerican administration and media.
On our side we have a GOP ruling class who finds this all "icky" and the rest of us, who live in fear of the IRS or some other government bully coming down on us. So, yeah, it feels pretty hopeless, but I don't think I'd survive the "divorce" very well, so I have to keep trying. Posted by: Y-not at April 03, 2015 01:06 PM (9BRsg) 19

I think that's what bugged me so much about the New Atheism. Not the lack of belief, not even the smug self-righteousness at the faith-based conviction that one is right. No, it's the use of a belief (or non-belief) specifically in order to stop thinking. Like putting on a cloak of intellect. Wrap it around you and you're good to go. More than that, they ascribe to their progressivism and atheism firm faith (there it is again) that the world is kept from utopia only by irrational superstition. It's not that they won't think critically about other's firmly-held beliefs. They won't think critically about their own. Posted by: AmishDude at April 03, 2015 01:06 PM (L2xDv) 20

I oppose SSM. I think it's bad public policy that led to predictably terrible results. I'm also a member of a religion that has some of the most uptight rules about human sexuality, marriage, etc. That said, I would not hesitate to make a SSM couple a cake for their reception or photograph their wedding. So talk about being in the minority -- I hardly see anyone who espouses that set of views. *shrugs* If someone wants to call me homophobic for opposing SSM or someone else wants to accuse me of being bad Christian for the cake thing, that's their problem, not mine. So did I. When I was in CA I read up on the SSM thing b/c of Prop 8. I spent time at some "gay conservative" blogs and really tried to understand why it had to be MARRIAGE, not a civil union or other legal arrangement. None of the folks advocating for SSM could provide me with a satisfactory argument. I was still somewhat "meh" about the issue until the Prop 8 opposition people turned into thugs, trying to destroy individual people's lives for simply exercising their political right to give to the Prop 8 effort or sign a bloody petition. What's wrong with Pence is that he's not very bright. He signed on enthusiastically for the Obamacare expansion of Medicaid in his state, because, hey, "free money", who could not like that? Not realizing that down the road, the switch part of the Obamacare bait-and-switch kicks in, the free money from the feds will be cut off, and all the states who bought into the expanded-Medicaid scheme end up with a huge monkey on their backs financially. It's all about power.
Here, my friends is the epicenter of current truth. Do we believe that immigration policy, the Keystone decision, voter ID law objections, or restrcting the military's right to vote are honest attempts at achieving a normative social outcome? Of course not. I have a book of Eric Servareid's essays published int he 1960s. In them he repeated characterizes Marxism not as an ideology, but as a justification for obtaining and retaining power. We see the same thing in action today from the left. There have been no serious attempts at reinvigorating middle class economic fortunes since January 20, 2009. If anything, the opposite is true: Taking no action is itself an action. Why the continued assault on churches? Why the attempts to remake the voting rolls? Why use the military for social engineering experiments? Why create a Crucible atmosphere in the science community over global warming? Why muddy the concept of family? Why promulgate by executive action what can't be done by legislation? Simple: To hollow out other power centers. Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at April 03, 2015 01:21 PM (659DL) 96

As I prepare to go to Stations of the Cross, this Easter season has me thinking more deeply about what my faith truly means to me. How far am I willing to commit to Christs teachings ?
With my fellow Christians being slaughtered, and persecuted in foreign lands and facing the enmity of my fellow countrymen here where I live. Jesus said people wouldn't like what he was teaching . . . He told us that people would revile us and that even our family (fellow countrymen ?) would turn on us. None of the folks advocating for SSM could provide me with a satisfactory argument.
Then it's for a reason they're to embarrassed to articulate. Validation. This really struck me when I heard a radio interview with Charles Murray who said that one of the cultural shifts is that the elites -- professionals, upper middle class -- are all about marriage now. Instead of the old days in which "a piece of paper doesn't define my love", now it's common and desired to be married. And it's a status symbol. Hence, gays want the status. They want to say they are "married" and introduce themselves as "married" and use the word "married". In part there's this desperate desire to validate themselves and get others to say "you're a good person and what you do is not weird" but it's also about fitting in with this cultural shift. I think it's hilarious that gays were tricked into embracing heteronormativity. Posted by: AmishDude at April 03, 2015 01:27 PM (L2xDv) Posted by: Zap Rowsdower at April 03, 2015 01:27 PM (MMC8r) 132

The CSA would accept most of the the Midwest, KS, OK, NE, NM, AZ,CO MT, KY, WVA, UT, ID. Basically we carve out the SE and the core of the country. We leave the Northern States on the coast to form their own country, and we leave the West Coast to form their own country. So the anti-gay position doesn't have power for the first time in recorded history and that's not fair!
It's not like things were nice and quiet for the last hundred years for gay people. Even twenty years ago simply revealing you were gay had an immediate social cost that, depending on where you were, could include violence. How many gay men have been violently assaulted or killed simply for having the temerity of being gay? Note that this stuff still happens in America today to say nothing of being the law of the land in many parts of the world. And how many anti-gay bigots have been violently assaulted or killed for their beliefs? I hate to break it to you, but we have reached the point where revealing that you are anti-gay has an immediate social cost. Just like revealing that you are a racist has an immediate social cost. "Oh, but I'm not anti-gay. I'm just anti-gay lifestyle. I'm just anti-gay marriage." No. Just like people who opposed interracial marriage were racists, people who oppose gay marriage are anti-gay. Maybe if we chose politicians who say what they mean, mean what they say, and let the chips fall where they may we might have an operable democracy. Alas, 'tis but a dream. We're boned. Coincidentally, that's why Ted Cruz is my main horse right now. He seems the least likely to disappoint and that's the best angle I have to judge. I'd be voting for the man. honest question: do you all really believe Jesus literally died and came
back 3 days later? Like you think that shit actually happened? I mean come the fuck on. Yes. I believe that God created the universe. I believe that God caused the stars to be formed in the heavens, set the sun and moon in their courses, defined the "rivers of the seas," and made Man in His own image. I believe that God called Abram out of the land of his fathers, and showed him a land that He would give his inheritors. I believe that Abram was renamed Abraham, and his wife Sarah bore him a son. I believe that, after generations of captivity, God sent Moses, of the Tribe of Levi, to rescue the Hebrews from the Egyptians. I believe that the Hebrews, led by God, wandered the wilderness for 40 years because of their unbelief. I believe that after the 40 years, God allowed the Hebrews, now under the leadership of Joshua (Yeshua) son of Nunn to occupy the land now known geographically as Palestine. Fast forwarding some: I believe that in the time of Caesar Augustus, a man named Yeshua (Jesus) was known to be the son of Joseph, a carpenter in Nazareth of Galilee. I believe that this Jesus taught with authority and power, and gathered many people to be his disciples. I believe that the Jewish political/religious leaders and the Romans put him to death by hanging on a cross. I believe that 3 days later, the tomb was empty. I could say I believe all these things because they're in the Bible. And that would be true, so far as it goes. But I believe them because they historically verified or logically inferred from things which have been historically verified. Because these things are historically verified, then I choose to believe the Bible when it says that "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God." I choose to believe that Jesus died, was raised on the 3rd day, was seen by many who could identify him, and then was raised to God's right hand. If you think to shame me for that belief, you are sadly, sadly mistaken. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at April 03, 2015 01:39 PM (kff5f) 218

I think this is a very common conclusion people are coming to -- the center cannot hold, and we're tired of trying to make it hold.
We are heading for a national rupture. Divorce is best done quickly. I do not wish to spend further years in a bad marriage. Divorce is coming, and so it should come quickly Here's the problem, Ace: The last time there was a similar cultural/political split came in 1860, and back then it was fairly clearly defined geographically: A supermajority of the population in the north were anti-slavery, while a supermajority in the south were pro-slavery. So the split was easy to do: draw a line approximately where the two different philosophies met each other on the map. But now, oh now, things are completely different: the split is generally urban vs. suburban/rural, and coast vs. interior. There's no way you can physically divide that up on a map. How can you create a separate country that includes Brookly, Ann Arbor, Berkeley, Hawaii, half of Miami (but not the other half), Minnesota's urban centers (but not the countryside), and the slums of New Jersey? You can't. Physically, at least. So what form will this "divorce" take? How can we "split" from the progressives? And what about people like you and me, anti-communists who live in the belly of the beast, surrounded on all side by immediate neighbors who would shun us if they knew out political outlooks? When The Divorce happens, will be be given over to the custody of progressive madmen? I can't see how this ends well -- or ends at all. Posted by: zombie at April 03, 2015 01:39 PM (K4YiS) 220

I get a 1914 vibe out of all the crap that's going on. Feckless world leaders that talk about global interconnections and trade tying the world together, making catastrophe impossible, crises can be managed.
Meanwhile an old, dangerous enemy is more open in its paranoid, Mafioso and aggressive view of the rest of the world, poses as the Third Rome, a defender of the faith and church, misuses symbolism of St. George and vows to fight decadence, is full of conspiracy theories and tales of NATO "sodomite snipers" kicking off the Maidan protests. Their populace is awash in nationalism and loves the SJW stuff coming out of the USA, "proving" the West wants to export the gay liberation stuff to them, and they aren't having any of it, no way. Their leader cynically exploits all this, portrays them as a country at bay, and love every Ferguson and Pizza Parlor story coming out. Very, very dangerous, leftists pushing pet causes a majority of the world doesn't want are like monkeys in a gunpowder factory flicking their Bics. They might not enjoy what they help unleash. honest question: do you all really believe Jesus literally died and came
back 3 days later? Like you think that shit actually happened? I mean come the fuck on. Yes. I believe that Jesus, who was God inhabiting a human body so that we might better relate to Him, was put to death ostensibly by the powerhungry of His day, but in truth as payment for my sins, because only blood can pay for sin and only Divine blood could pay for all of us. I believe His resurrection from the dead is proof of His claims and as such, I throw my lot with Him entirely. Posted by: Methos at April 03, 2015 01:42 PM (ZbV+0) 243

I know I told this story before. I had 5 bad disks in my neck from a car accident. It blew out really bad in 2004, and the traces from that took 3 years to go away. It blew out again in 2011 which was 4 months before my mom got sick. I have one of those cervical traction things and had to be in it a few times a day. Spending a month in the hospital with my mom just made it worse. My neck was freezing up, I couldn't turn my head, my right arm and shoulder was numb, etc. The night she died I went home, sat on the couch, looked up and said mom, I hope you are ok. That's the last thing I remembered, I passed out. I moved to the bed eventually and could not sleep on my side for more than 15 seconds before the neck kicked in. For some reason it didn't hurt and I passed out again. when I woke up the next morning there was no stiffness, and all traces of the neck injury was gone, all if it. I had a new body. Its been 4 years and I don't even think about the neck anymore. I can do everything I did before the car accident. Mom sent her message..no pain. I'm not so agnostic anymore. People are simply finding out that outward homophobia is unacceptable. Just like being an outward racist is unacceptable. If that lady had said she wouldn't serve pizza at a mixed race wedding, she'd have reaped the same whirlwind. Well, perhaps one with less gay porn. But the same basic thing. Only no one would have donated money to them. The entire South had to be dragged into repealing their anti-miscegenation laws by the Supreme Court (Rule by judicial FIAT!!!!!111!!) in 1967. Can we stop with all of this apocalyptic the American dream is dying bullshit?
It'd be one thing if the US hadn't previously supported slavery, denying women the right to vote, Jim Crow, etc., in the past, but it seems pretty fucking stupid to continually hearken back to a time when apparently everything was okay (which we can apparently say was the years 1970-200. I don't like what's going on. A business should be allowed to deny service to whomever it chooses. ..but, this whole the America I know/want is dead because I don't currently like the way the wind is going is retarded. It'd be one thing if this were already a utopia and liberalism where shitting all over it, but it's not and it never was. there have always been problems, but the USA has always done the best at addressing and remedying them. Mistakes in policy will always be made, but in no other country is their an avenue to remedy these mistakes. Stop shitting all over everything because things aren't going your way and be part of something better. Work in the system and make things right. Stop trying to take a moral high ground based on a historical precedent that doesn't exist. We are apart of a flawed country that, like every other country in existence, has a deeply flawed, and often shameful history. I've said for awhile that one of the major problems with Washington DC, re the Middle East, is ... because THEY have no faith, they do not understand how people of Faith work... So when the head of Iran's government and religion says Death to America... they don't believe he means it... they can't see how those who truly have Faith, KNOW that God can make anything possible... ergo... even something the Elites consider silly, can be acted upon because God Wills it... Essentially, the left does use the same moral palate, and has a great deal of difficulty believing that the right can have a moral basis for decisions they disagree with. the right's palate is more varied, and can therefore conceive of the rationale for the left's decision while still disagreeing. It explains how it is so easy for the left to create un-persons against whom no measure is too extreme.

Well, the combined might of the MSM and the White House couldn't turn Ferguson into Selma II. Now they've turned their collective eye towards Pizzageddon and still no effin' Selma II. Now the out and proud atheists are all bitchin' about Christians and Jews for their antiquated beliefs, hoping against hope that Christians and Jews will give them a Selma II and maybe a book burning or two. Something! ... it's killing 'em that the Neanderthals refuse to acknowledge the awesomeness of their masters by indulging in a paroxysm of rage, because in the mindset of The Elite, plebeian violence is the true confirmation of their superiority.

Despair
Yeah, the conservatives have been too busy for the past 30 years to pay attention to the fact that the radical leftist loons took over the schools and indoctrinated their children. We are doomed because the left controls everything and unfortunately, they also have the younger generations on their side now as well. The conservatives didn't bother to pass on their values to their children. They didn't bother to keep an eye on what their children were being taught. They also couldn't be bothered to go out and be activists for right leaning causes. They basically let the left take over and didn't do a damn thing about it! I am really sorry that the revolution was and is inconvenient. I am also very sorry that freedom is so expensive. Oh well, I am sure the left won't round up every conservative, and I am sure at least some of us will be able to keep a small room for our families in our own house after everything is nationalized. Yeah, I am sure it will all be okay. Uh huh. Sure. Posted by: Mistress Overdone at April 03, 2015 02:21 PM (2/oBD) 506
From the piece: "Say, for example, that a Catholic school had no trouble hiring a chemistry teacher who openly advocated for same-sex marriage, because that teacher was in the school to teach chemistry. His views on gay marriage are irrelevant, in practice. The school may have a different standard for hiring its religion teachers, or its social studies teachers, requiring them to be more doctrinally in line with the Church. But that is a distinction that may not hold up in court under challenge, Kingsfield said."
So we are now in an era wherein the US court system decides and regulates Church doctrine. Great. Let me know when we are supposed to start shooting people. I don't have a clue who or where but send me a twitter or something. Posted by: Hopped Up On Something at April 03, 2015 02:21 PM (agKOd) 507

"Anti-Memories pizza gofundme page, up to 400 bucks. Libs are real hard core givers."
Obviously a con job. They sent ACTION MUTANT NEWS 57 to memories to ask the question to generate a backlash to which the Jesus nuts would send $700K to the bigots and they would answer with a counter-counterbacklash to generate 400 bucks. No, wait... Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at April 03, 2015 02:39 PM (659DL) Posted by: Soothsayer, Inc. -- The King Unwilling at April 03, 2015 02:40 PM (SYMCn) 573
I'll bet that Mike Rowe could have articulated the Indiana law in such a way as to make even the lowest reporter understand it.
Or just about any regular AOSHQ moron here could have done it, for that matter. So what was Pence's problem? He really stepped on his own dick. Posted by: OregonMuse at April 03, 2015 02:40 PM (w2MRj) 574

Amish Dude missed the most annoying thing about atheists- it's not the cloak they wrap themselves up in- it's the goddamned twirls they do afterwards.

The sad thing is this:
We have the collected wisdom of the ages, books written by brilliant people over the centuries. With all that wisdom, do we pass it along to our children? Why, no. We have people that get their moral philosophy from tv shows. It's no surprise that the mental midgets on the board today are from WA state, when the leftist thugs are in control. I agree with whoever said "soviets lost the cold war, but communism won"
The center is holding, but the institutions are systematically invaded from within. We want healthy food, clean environment, but we get the "green" movement. Then we get CO2 is a poison. Religions get marginalized as well. And the private sector and public sector get unions. And Democrats now seem to be fed the hate propaganda from Hollywood and the MSM, where communism crept in and made McCarthy the bad guy (obnoxious as he may have been) I still see the large groups of people holding, but the institutions systematically overrun. Hopefully the blogs can still save the day, and maybe some candidates with the right message. Posted by: Illiniwek at April 03, 2015 03:00 PM (QGjci) 581

Quiet Man:
The funny thing is, George Wallace admitted he knew segregation was on the way out when he said "segregation forever." The question is, are you as wise as George Wallace? Or do you really think "traditional values" are going to win out on this? Have civil rights ever gone backwards? Posted by: seattle slough at April 03, 2015 03:06 PM (mCz8+) 583
I wouldn't blame Pence now because some law prof in a closet critiques him.
At least he is trying to do something. Where is Pence suppose to even start when Americans are no longer taught the foundational elements of why we are America- and the current culture tells them that our Judeo Christian belief system is something to be embarrassed about and uncool? It's these kinds of attacks that discourage politician from putting themselves out there. It helps the liberals with the roll over. It's how societies descend into evil- few will fight back and the watchers will sit and critique the "style" of those that do. At least that is one of the explanations of why so many Germans enabled you know who...Hitler. Posted by: Danube River Guide at April 03, 2015 03:09 PM (RJMhd) 584
Re Second Coming, it's problematic: Obama is certainly one of "the worst", but it seems inappropriate somehow to describe the golfer-in-chief late nite talkshow guest as being "full of passionate intensity". He's more "banality of evil".

#96, uh, we have a percentage. Way more combat veterans track conservative than not, and you don't enlist infantry or armored cavalry, go SF, Ranger, or SEAL, keep going back, and not kinda like it.
You may feel bad about liking it, or pretend to feel bad, but given a choice between dying really old and unhealthy or a reasonable chance at going Arkan's Tigers on the architects of our national ills, I know which one I'd take. Posted by: SGT Dan's Cat at April 03, 2015 03:39 PM (+YMDZ) 587
Hey Danube:
Look at the world's least religious countries. Now look at the world's most religious countries. One of those lists is filled with prosperous, safe, and free citizens. The other isn't. I'll let you guess which is which. Posted by: seattle slough at April 03, 2015 03:51 PM (mCz8+) 588
Yeah, as a conservative professor in a minor corner of academia, I can sympathize with Professor Kingsfield. I don't hide my beliefs, but I don't advertise them either.

I think Obama must read the Bible. He has fashioned his administration on " a house decided cannot stand" and has done his best to decide us.

I seem to recall that Rod Dreher left (or was invited to leave, depending on who you ask) National Review because they were too conservative for him. Food for thought. Dreher isn't a conservative. He's a narcissist who lays his eggs in the hair of conservatives like Ace so they'll promote his books. Posted by: Peter at April 03, 2015 07:14 PM (FKRzq) 593
Christians staying under the radar to survive in academia is hardly a new trend. That reality existed for decades. One of my early wake-up calls occured when our graduate director announced that he had never met an intelligent Christian. Standing beside him was our leading grad student (highest GRE scores) whom the Director also mentored. This intelligent man was a Christian and his equally intelligent wife was a minister. The grad director attempted to rid his student of his faith and when his efforts failed; made little effort to help his student find a teaching position after his dissertaton was completed.
Indentification as either a Christian or conservative turns one into an academic and social leper within university circles. Posted by: I'd rather be surfin at April 04, 2015 12:50 AM (ZDz2H) 594
Gospel according to John, chapter 15, verse 18 on:
"If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you." ". . . all of these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not Him that sent me." "He that hateth me hateth my Father also. "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning."
