Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (4-2-2015)Adlai Stevenson famously offered this definition: "A free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular." We do not live in that society. "I expect to die in bed," Francis Eugene Cardinal George famously remarked. "My successor will die in prison, and his successor will die a martyr in the public square. His successor will pick up the shards of a ruined society and slowly help rebuild civilization, as the church has done so often in human history." Perhaps it will not come to that. But we already are on the precipice of sending men with guns to the homes and businesses of bakers to enforce compliance with dictates undreamt-of the day before yesterday. "Functions that were previously silo'ed will be embedded inside these business-centric circles instead," he writes. "This structure will require fewer roles that primarily manage expectations and drive alignment across legacy silos." Like it or not, I've come to appreciate soccer. Any kid can play, which fits with the inclusive agenda of progressive schools. Although the corollary to 'any kid can play' is that every kid must play because there is an iron grip to the warm hug of progressive inclusionism. Cleanliness becomes more important when godliness is unlikely. Hey Moronettes - Want to Earn 20% More?

"I think that's weird within a capitalist democracy. If you're a company and you don't agree with it, you don't put your factories there, and I don't think that's good for your economy. Usually the economy wins in the end in terms of decision-making, so we'll see what comes of this." Tyson added that homophobia "almost always entirely stems from religion." Billions more are in mourning, while a number of powerful senators have renewed calls to increase defense spending. In light of the recent madness that has been transporting lately, I went
back and read Pat Buchanans culture war speech from then1992 convention, which I do from time to time, it's amazing how prescient it was. The last words are the battle cry we must take to heart and use as a rallying cry to the snarling hordes that wish to subjugate us, "...my friends, we must take back our cities, and take back our culture, and take back our country...." Prescient indeed. Posted by: Kreplach at April 02, 2015 11:03 PM (BJLGz) Posted by: Ricardo Kill at April 02, 2015 11:04 PM (Ga/lA) 12

My family owns a book of gospel commentary that has one of my ancestor's name written in it several times and the date 1828 and 1832, IIRC - he was apparently prone to practicing his signature in the flyleaves of books, not too uncommon back then I believe. The Intolerance of the Left: Religious Freedom Restoration Act Edition
Tolerance, to the Left, comprises of shutting up on your part, and saying what they want you to say. Indiana, and Arkansas, considered (and been bullied into vetoing) local versions of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which has existed on the Federal level for two decades. All that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act demands, is that for the state to restrict religious expression or actions, the state must show that the reason for doing so is compelling, and that it is the least restrictive way possible. Here's what the left will do with the pizza thing, now that the news media has been shown to be leftist.
"Ms. Pizza owner, wouldn't the Christian thing to do be to FORGIVE?" The answer should be this: "This is nothing to do with Christianity. This is about using the power of the media to destroy people. This is what must be stopped, by suing ABC-57 until it is forced to go out of business...or get a GoFundMe campaign. Christianity tells us to forgive those who sin, but it does not tell us to allow our enemies full reign over us." I hope the Pizza People say something like that, rather than doing the Nice Thing and Letting Bygones Be Bygones. Because, you know, the left Always lets bygones be bygones, right? Carlo Cipolla wrote a thesis on stupidity. I am beginning to believe he was a prophet of some sort. He was an interesting sort of economist, and his work would have been a perfect response to Jared Diamond's work if it had not been written 30 years beforehand.
These are Cipolla's five fundamental laws of stupidity: 1 Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation. 2 The probability that a certain person (will) be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person. 3 A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses. 4 Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake. 5 A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person. Corollary: a stupid person is more dangerous than a pillager. Posted by: Kindltot at April 02, 2015 11:39 PM (t//F+) 190

If Memories Pizza was really really awful -- so bad that you could barely even tell if it was pizza -- I could imagine this courtroom scene in their trial for Thoughtcrimes:
Defense lawyer: "So, Mr. and Mr. Jenkins, you tried to order pizza from Memories for your wedding, but when you saw how horrible it looked, you decided to reconsider?" Mr. and Mr. Jenkins: "Well, yes. We couldn't tell what it even was." Defense lawyer: "Is it fair to say, then, that your were questioning whether or not it even qualified as pizza?" Mr. and Mr. Jenkins: "Yes, we guess so." Defense lawyer: "So you admit then that Memories pizza may not be overtly lesbian, gay, bi or trans -- but it is questioning?" Mr. and Mr. Jenkins: "Uh, yeah." Defense lawyer: "Your honor, I move to have this case dismissed." Posted by: zombie at April 02, 2015 11:42 PM (K4YiS) 206

I trolled my liberal FB friends today with this, though you all might be entertained: Intelligence =/= Rationality Human intelligence has real-world practicality precisely because its logic is not bound by rational limits. If we didn't have the option of making local sense out of unexpected events without first having to check them against the sum total of our experiences, then we would never be able to react quickly enough to survive. Rationality is a useful toolkit for figuring out what happened after the fact, and it is essential for creating new guidelines with which to manage expected future events, but the toolkit of rationality is neither omniscient nor innate. Instead, it is a learned, limited mode of thinking that has to be chosen, developed, assembled, and then deliberately invoked. As such, rationality is only one of many possible expressions of the integrated underlying logic of human perception, memory, and intelligence. To assume differently is deeply, deeply unwise. Rule of thumb: "There are are no rational people, there are only rational arguments." Moral: Please, embrace the non-intelligent rationality of other people even as you must work around its effects, for that is the only way we can allow each other enough room to be fully human. *falls off soapbox* Posted by: Piercello at April 02, 2015 11:44 PM (QJCCx) 218

We should all remember that the analogue to Iraq and the current situation in the Middle East is Vietnam. In Vietnam, we had that war won. In every conceivable way. It's true that we had won every battle, but that is what had the war won. I was there supporting Operation Linebacker and Linebacker II. North Vietnam was on its knees - practically begging to surrender. The Democrat congress, for what I believe to be purely political reasons - they didn't want a Republican President to be credited for winning the war - ordered an end to all of the shit that was winning the war. The same thing happened - continues to happen - in Iraq. It will probably happen in A-stan as well. For 35 years I didn't get a good night's sleep for having been there. I've said too much... Look, it's not right what's happening. Good night. Posted by: LoneStarHeeb at April 02, 2015 11:52 PM (BZAd3) 259

I got all sorts of ancient Greek stuff I excavated illegally in Sicily. Mostly from about 600 BC- 500 BC. Pottery shards, piece of statuary, a few things intact. (Best find: a doll's arm, made of fired clay, from an early site, pre-600 BC). Mostly Attic Ware, Black Figure, and Geometric. From early greek colonies on Sicily. Yeah, I'm a modern day Schliemann or Elgin. I confess. I'd feel more guilty, but there were extenuating circumstances (that I researched ahead of time) that alleviated all guilt. Well, I didn't drink tonight.
That took a lot of will, help, and struggle. Not to take that first drink in 11 years. I am back to minute by minute instead of day by day. I hate living here in this dead society and dead culture, surrounded by those who want me murdered for being faithful to my Lord. But. I am where I am supposed to be, and I am to be a light for those who are hurting. There may be others out there who hate me but are also struggling with drinking, or addiction, or depression and can't think of waiting that extra minute or hour. And I'm supposed to smile at these enemies and say, "You are loved, and there is something that can make a man hurt to his bones and to death stretch out his hand and say, 'Brother' to you who wish him the worst." Today has been the hardest day of my life since my father's death. But I didn't drink. And I hope I am Light to someone out there who hurts, even if they hate me. -G'night all. Take care. Those of you who haven't experienced that unique aspect of this state, can have no idea of the utterly mind blowing, eyeball popping beauty of the natural blooms along highways and in fallow fields. Every bit the rival of the leaves in Vermont. Only, much more colorful. FAR more colorful. It's good for the soul, to be out in those fields of beauty and splendor. You haunt my mind. who the hell are you? You drive me nuts. Posted by: derak Want to go really insane? I only reveal about 5% of all the backstories/careers/incidents/schemes I have been and am currently involved in. What you read here is just the tip of the iceberg. That "Most Interesting Man in the World" dude is a rank amateur, frankly. Seriously -- I'm not just bullshitting. People in real life also often say that I have the most amazing life story of anyone they'e ever met -- and I don't reveal most of it to those folks either. This wildcat archaeology thing is just a hobby of mine, and not really among my "interesting" stories. I rarely (if ever) talk about it in real life, because it is illegal. Other people just go on vacation. Me, prior to any overseas trips, I spend days and days in libraries going through old journals and books looking for references to archaeological discoveries in the area I'll be visiting. Then I cross-reference those places with what the site is like today. Some archaeological sites are still identified as such, and are tourist attractions. Some archaeological sites have ben paved over or turned into shopping malls. Ah, but some archaeological sites have been forgotten. Those are the ones I'm looking for. That is to say: it was some ancient Roman or Greek 9or whatever) temple that fell into ruins and was literally underground for 2000 years. Then some (usually British or German) dude discovered it (the best era to research is the 1850 and 1860s, I've learned), and it was excavated -- inexpertly, usually. And then it was all covered up and forgotten a second time. Until I come around, that is. No more need be said. That's my kind of vacation. Posted by: zombie at April 03, 2015 12:21 AM (K4YiS) 380

I will reflect on the coming Sunday, thusly:
This Sunday, we mark and celebrate the Resurrection. Without which, "Christianity" would be no more significant than Buddhism, Hinduism or any number of various faiths. But, only Christ was raised from the dead, having paid in his sacrifice on the cross, and three days in the unholy flames of hell, the full price for our sins. Because of his death and resurrection, we have the blessing of His forgiveness, and the option to be joined with him in that death and resurrection, purely by the vehicle of His love, and not by any means of our own, nor having to pay our own price on any cross, nor a moment's time in Satan's hell. As it happens, this Sunday is also the commemoration of the date of my birth. I will have dwelt on this planet for fifty-seven years. Forty of which, have been anointed by the Salvation of Christ. I was Born Again at seventeen. While out in fields of flowers full showing the Glory of His love, I will again confess my inherent sin, and be baptized once again, in His blood and again, raised in His Spirit. Won't be any church service or choir or preacher nor deacon to be found. But, I will be in His house of worship, and abide in the House of the Lord, forever. Best. Birthday. Ever. (i had to look up charles lyell) Posted by: north and judd He came up with the concept of dating rock strata by inspecting the marine fossils in it; and also was the first person to explain that marine fossils were sometimes found inland (and even on mountaintops) because of continental uplift -- which necessitated the "old earth" theory, which at the time was deemed preposterous (i.e. that the Earth was on the order of billions of years old, and that continents and tectonic plates moved and crashed into each other. Prior to Lyell, most people assumed the age of the earth could be measured in thousands of years, or at most in the low millions). Turns out, of course, that Lyell was 100% correct. His findings not only revolutionized geology, but biology and astronomy as well. 291 How about what is the oldest birth date of someone you have actually spoken to. Mine would be my great grandfather who was born in 1868 (died in 1967). Same here: great-grandfather, born 1870 in Chicago, about six months before the great fire. He died in 1963. My memories of him are extremely vague, but he left behind a written record of his story and that of his family. He lost everything in the Panic of 1907 -- four mercantile stores in NW Minnesota and the Dakotas -- and spent decades afterward paying off his creditors. Would that his like existed today. That story led to a reunion of many of his descendants in 2007. I met third cousins then and actually knew what the term meant. Started me on the path of looking up ancestors and family history (3/4ths scandi). Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at April 03, 2015 01:02 AM (95CzI) 517

Feels like there has been some nerve damage, maybe. Slowly improving though. Got the newly-made dashboard installed in the TR, and it looks pretty good. Made a wiring boo-boo on the wiper switch. It works, but its action is reversed. Full in is fast, one click out is slow, two clicks out, they park. But I left enough slack in the cable harness to it, that I can fix it without again removing the dash. And the bastardized distributor that I built for it works. Popped it in the engine, and it fired up. Heading home tomorrow morning, because stuff needs to get done there, too. But I got my building permit for the house here in AJ, so I will return in a few weeks, and get some serious work done. Chicago makes very respectable pizza, however. First in the "normal" category of thin crust with lots of toppings, and second, in what is my favorite category, the "stuffed" pizza. Top and bottom crust, with fillings baked in the middle (my favorite is spinach/garlic/onion/sausage). My current favorite for both thin and stuffed is Piero's on the Northside. The only way I've been able to broach it in the past was by inserting myself into a previously identified situation as a different person, so that no one involved knows I was and am "zombie." It can be tricky! The funniest example of that is that I met and had a long conversation with Victor Davis Hanson, who is my "stablemate" over at Pajamas Media -- but I never once revealed to him that I was "zombie" nor that our meeting was not an accident -- he just thought I was some alarmingly well-informed fan. (i.e. that the Earth was on the order of billions of years old, and that continents and tectonic plates moved and crashed into each other. Prior to Lyell, most people assumed the age of the earth could be measured in thousands of years, or at most in the low millions). Posted by: zombie at April 03, 2015 12:55 AM (K4YiS) Lyell didn't discover tectonic plates, though. The theory of "continental drift" was first proposed by Alfred Wegener around 1915. It was largely ignored and/or ridiculed for decades, until sonar mapping of the ocean floors began in the 1950s and 60s. Once the Mid-Atlantic Ridge was fully mapped, it was hard to deny. Another thing I find amusing: In the 18th Century, there was a debate between the theories of "catastrophism" and "gradualism". The catastrophists tended towards Biblical explanations like the Flood, while the new scientific geologists preferred slower explanations like uplift, sedimentation, volcanism, and so forth. The gradualists won the day. But then in the modern era, evidence was discovered of huge asteroid and comet impacts, which suddenly and radically changed conditions on Earth. I think that geologists have an instinctive revulsion to such ideas. Great impacts resemble An Smiting By The Angry Hand Of God. But to astronomers, considering the solar system as a whole, which is teeming with debris and rubble, the occasional SMOD *is* gradualism. It's no more troubling than shifting grains of sand on a beach. Posted by: rickl at April 03, 2015 01:37 AM (sdi6R) 597
I look at it this way. I believe in an all Powerful God that created the Heavens and the Earth. He could also create contradictions in physical evidence.
My Faith tells me this planet is actually young. My Faith also tells me that knowing the exact age of the universe or this planet makes no difference in my daily life. As an afterthought we need some sciency type to calculate the exact weight of the moon. Now that would have everyday applications that could save humanity from itself. Maet, thank you for the photo from Kenya. It gets immensely frustrating seeing what our society has become and seemingly impossible to resolve given the looters outnumber us and the votes are equal and the mind wanders to dark places.

I look at it this way. Stellar formation takes billions of years. God created the Sun on the later half of the first day (night, then morning). God clearly wasn't working on a human calender or conception of time here. Why would He? He pre-existed the Sun that we base our calenders on. But did the political head-choppings continue after the tables turned on Robespierre in what, 1794, or so? The Jacobins were not around for 2 and a half centuries - they consumed themselves in the Revolution.
I thought the head-chopping in the 19th and 20th centuries was more the killing of common criminals than killing for political purposes. Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. Lyell didn't discover tectonic plates, though. The theory of "continental drift" was first proposed by Alfred Wegener around 1915.
Posted by: rickl True, true. I guess he suggested continental uplift without going the whole hog of suggesting that the continents were floating around on gigantic motile islands. But he was close to having that concept. I'm thinking specifically of how Darwin was right there on the beach in Chile during the incredible 1835 earthquake, and saw with his own eyes how the sea bed rose about 20 feet as a result of the quake, leaving mussels still alive clinging to freshly exposed (formerly undersea) rocks 20 feet in the air. He realized in a flash that this was how the Andes had formed, over countless millions of years, and he thought to himself, "Lyell was right!" It was this incident, BTW, even more than going to the Galapagos the following year, which convinced him the evolution was possible (because it confirmed that there was enough time for evolution to have occurred, which in that era was one of the main scientific arguments against it). Anyway, now we know that the 1835 quake (and all later Valdivia quakes) were due to tectonic plates subducting; but you're right, no one quite knew that at that time. First acknowledged King of All England was Alfred the Great. There was one other Saxon king prior to Alfred who claimed the title, but IIRC the other Saxon kingdoms didn't acknowledge his overlordship. I'm not exactly sure why people tend to think English history begins with the Battle of Hastings, but it overlooks a great deal of very interesting Saxon history.

One of the most amazing audio recordings ever made was of a woman named Lyndall Albury in a tiny shack on Abaco Island in the Bahamas in 1965.
The backstory is that in 1776, some American colonists loyal to the British crown fled American soil when it became apparent that the revolutionaries were going to win and found a new nation. The Loyalists feared (or some of them feared, at least) that they would be massacred. So, many hundreds of them decamped to the nearest British-owned soil they could find -- the Bahamas. They settled there in what became isolated white enclaves in what otherwise were islands mostly populated by blacks. And their isolation became even more extreme as the decades and centuries rolled by. So in 1965 some ethnologists showed up and discovered these strange all-white British loyalists still living on Abaco and still thinking that 1776 had happened practically yesterday. The American Revolution (which they had opposed) was still intensely fresh in their worldview, and they still thought of themselves as Britons living out in the colonies. So in this context, the ethnologists asked one of them to sing a song. Remember, this was 1965, in the Bahamas (the same year the Beatles filmed "Help" there, interestingly), and if you had asked any other young woman in the world that year to just sing the first song that popped into her head, she would have sung "Ticket to Ride" or "Yesterday" or maybe something by the Rolling Stones. But no. Lyndall Albury, a young Abacan Loyalist in 1965 was still living in 1776 in her head, so this is the song she uncorked for the microphone -- a parable about King Canute that had been a drinking song in the American colonies back in the 1770s, and which she knew casually by heart: "King Canute had courtiers, many a one, And flatterers not a few, And they told to Canute that under the sun There was nought that he could not do. Then out spake King Canute, "Quite well I know Monarch and King are we Wend you with me to the beach below, We will gaze on that glorious sea." To the beach below he royally strode, And sat himself on the sand, And he cried to the billows, as onward they rode, "Hasten back! It is my command." Yet onward rolling on the billows came, Stopping not in their rage, Scornfully flinging their angry foam In the monarch's blushing face. Then up rose the king with scorn on his brow, As the billows rushed by his chair, And he cried to his courtiers, still whispering low, Full of shame and contrition there: "Go, flatterers, go ye hence, go away, begone, Wiser be from this day, Mark you this lesson: there is but one Whom the winds and the waves obey!" ----- For some reason I can't find the recording anywhere online, but it's worth seeking out -- haunting, unforgettable. Especially if you know the backstory. Posted by: zombie at April 03, 2015 03:04 AM (K4YiS) 650

Wow, doing some research now on the weirdness of Abaco. Basic info here:
http://www.redcoat.me.uk/bahamas.htm Exerpt: "So when Britain was given little other choice but to exchange Florida for the Bahamas at the Treaty of Versailles in 1783, she was able to offer approx eight thousand displaced American Loyalists (who also had few other options) vacant land grants throughout the islands. Those from New York mainly chose to settle in the Abaco Islands/Harbour Island area, whereas those from Florida (many originating from the Carolinas & Georgia) settled in most of the other islands. Later another sixteen hundred followed them there after they had tasted anarchy in the new USA. However these days there is only about a half dozen or so towns where this is still obvious. The most notable are Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island with Bahamas's highest proportion of whites (50%), New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay, Man-o-war Cay and Hope town on Elbow Cay all just east of Great Abaco Island. Dunmore Town on Harbour Island and Spanish Wells are both just off the north of Eleuthera Island and George Town is on Great Exuma Island. These towns were all founded under difficult circumstances by Americans who had suffered grievously for resisting the insurgents forced break with the Motherland and then had to endure the island's primitive conditions while tented in vast refugee camps at Carleton as the process of deciding who got what took place. The clapboard sided homes they built still stand resembling the saltbox cottages of New England, with their pastel coloured sides and surrounding white picket fences, where life remains charmingly old fashioned, gentle, detached from the outside world and somewhat frozen in time...." As late as 1971 they still felt so connected to England that they refused to join the rest of the Bahamas in becoming an independent nation! The residents of Abaco insisted that they remain under British rule, and took their case all the way to Parliament in London -- but were turned down! "Little Black Mustache" was recorded in the same session as "King Cnute." The aspect that fascinates me the most is her accent. Linguists consider the accent of the White Abacans as a time capsule of what the accent of Americans was like in the 1770s and 1780s, still preserved unchanged. And you can hear it in her singing -- the astounding moment when a British accent is transitioning to an American accent, but stuck halfway there, not quite fully one or the other. Posted by: zombie at April 03, 2015 03:17 AM Haha! Glad you liked it. Wonderfully bad and over the top. Michael Caine vs David Warner chewing scenery like they're starving. Full of totally WTF? moments. They're scouring the caribbean, raiding modern vessels in sailing ships, in full buccaneer get up. Great line from the CG helicopter crew on the radio- "They're pirates! They're DRESSED as pirates!" I don't know what they were smoking, but it was strong shit. Posted by: otho at April 03, 2015 03:58 AM (tBSrv) 664

The aspect that fascinates me the most is her accent. Linguists consider the accent of the White Abacans as a time capsule of what the accent of Americans was like in the 1770s and 1780s, still preserved unchanged. And you can hear it in her singing -- the astounding moment when a British accent is transitioning to an American accent, but stuck halfway there, not quite fully one or the other.

the hospital initially refused to put him on the waiting list for a new organ because they thought he would be 'non-compliant' with the treatment.
Patients can be disqualified from getting a transplant if a hospital doubts they'll stick to the medication regimen after the operation. At the time, the hospital said that Stokes had failed to take his medication in the past, so his history of non-compliance meant he was not put on the waiting list. Cool. Affirmative Action is now part of the matrix in determining organ transplants. The Race Baiting Industry. There isn't anything it can't do. Posted by: Don't h8 at April 03, 2015 01:14 PM (Y0PAl) 718
