Goodhart's Law "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure." There are obvious implications in the measurement of the economy, but this is also evident in business behavior. It's fashionable to cast aspersions on the Vietnam era US armed forces, but for some reason they seem to have acquitted themselves quite well against the NVA regulars and the Vietcong. Coincidence I guess. Of course they were completely inadequate against the real enemy. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at April 04, 2015 08:59 AM (Zu3d9) 15

North Carolina has a ridiculous profusion of Specialty Plates available. Outer Banks, Blue Ridge Parkway, State University Teams, those sort of things aren't so odd, but I saw one the other day that had a logo of a pair of shoes and the slogan "I'd rather be shaggin'", referring apparently to shag dancing. I think most displays of the Battle Flag on private property are indeed giant FUs countering the prevailing groupthink (I even saw one flying in the hinterlands of Maui recently). Yes, I'm an old fart raised on the Lost Cause version of the Late Unpleasantness. One of my ancestors lost an arm in the Wilderness and another was wounded at Shiloh and spent a year as a guest of the Federal Government at Camp Chase and Camp Dearborn. I WILL NOT be ashamed of those men.
I understand that the flag is a symbol of other things to other people and I don't personally display it. But if someone else does, that's their business. Posted by: That SOB Van Owen at April 04, 2015 09:06 AM (KElLn) 25

No, that is the 13 star version of the first flag (not counting the Bonny Blue) of the Confederacy. The first first flag had 7 stars and stars added as states joined. The second flag had the battle flag as a canton on a white field, the third same as the second but with a vertical white stripe on the end opposite the canton. Then I stop to think. No. Not depressed. Angry. The anger turns to intensity, the intensity to motivation. That...thing...in the White House and his minions shall not win. Let us remember then that on a Friday 2000 years ago things didn't look so hot for the Good Guys. But by Sunday, evil had lost the war. Though it still hasn't given up as our present circumstances in this land attest, it is defeated and that must be remembered always. Joining a small local tradition today. There are a handful of Wake Forest alumni/boosters who are big baseball fans, members of all the University Clubs, etc., but also like to drink beer with their spectating. Forbidden inside the Wake stadium. So, through years of attrition/compromise, a balance has been struck. They, now we, are allowed to stand on stepladders along the right field wall, adjacent to the parking lot, and drink beer as long as it's nominally concealed in "Cozies". I caught one game with the guys last year, but this time I'm bringing my own step-ladder, make it official. Wake vs. BC at 4 pm.

The May 1942 directive not only removed the red dots from the stars, it also ordered the over-painting of the red and white rudder stripes.
Then in mid 1943 they tried to put a red surround to the star and bar insignia. That lasted all of three months and the red surround was replaced by the blue surround. Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at April 04, 2015 09:58 AM (+EPmu) 120

In short, it's what the industry encourages. The tarts always claim it's their way of embracing their sexuality, owning it, blah, blah feminists garbage. But their managers hook them up w/creeps like Terry Richardson and Annie Liebowitz who get them to pose near nude, and they make sleazy music videos, etc. For some it seems that they may have been abused? What's interesting is that the few who haven't gone this route, such as Taylor Swift, are mocked endlessly in the entertain press/blogs for being such a prude. So what did Taylor do? She moved to NYC, started hanging out w/models and new BFF Lena Dunham, and started wearing skimpier clothes. The only ones who escape this seem to be the really talented ones like Adel, who doesn't fit cookie-cutter beauty standards and likely said no to the pressure. The "Stainless Banner", the National Flag of the democratically elected and lawfully seceded (per the Constitution's guarantees) Confederate States Of America.
As others have pointed out, this is one of several flags the young CSA adopted in its short lifespan, but probably the one most Confederates associated afterwards. OK Ready for my Platinum Membership now, Ace. Bonus Point: Statists and Lincoln-worshippers can misread the Constitution or claim it 'should not apply', but the right of Confederate Texas to secede was indisputable, as the right to withdraw from the Union AT ANY TIME FOR ANY REASON was guaranteed to Texas when that then-sovereign independent Country agreed to join the USA as a State via international Treaty...the only State to do so. And this only a few years before the War broke out. Under no stretch of imagination can Lincoln have had the right to invade Texas with a hostile army after that State lawfully voted to invoke its 1848 Treaty Rights in 1861 and withdrew from the Union...just as the 1848 Treaty with USA guaranteed it the right to do. Posted by: SCV Life Member at April 05, 2015 02:36 PM (QvtD6) 176
The flag is the Stars and Bars (the first national flag of the CSA), but with 13 stars, representing the 13 states that the Confederacy claimed as members (including Kentucky and Missouri, each of which had competing state governments--one which seceded and joined the Confederacy, and one which remained loyal to the Union).
