GOP Budget Includes Provision To Slash Government Spending And Repeal Dozens Of Costly Mandates

April Fools! A bunch of Republicans joined with Democrats to move forward on a major liberal agenda item.

It's old, from last week, but I just came across an interesting tidbit about the Senate GOP's budget...it includes a provision that could lead to implementing one of Hillary's likely campaign priorities.

Not every budget vote in Thursday's Senate marathon is particularly telling. The vote on SA 798, one of Washington Senator Patty Murray's amendments, is an exception. Titled the Deficit-Neutral Reserve Fund for Legislation to Allow Americans to Earn Paid Sick Time, Murray's amendment would devote funds "relating to efforts to improve workplace benefits and reduce health care costs, which may include measures to allow Americans to earn paid sick time to address their own health needs and the health needs of their families, and to promote equal employment opportunities."

The amendment retooled the Healthy Families Act, a bill that faces a steep hill in a Republican Congress. Yet unlike most of the Democrat's amendments this one was agreed to, picking up every member of Murray's party and 16 Republicans. From the Republican side: New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte, North Carolina Senator Richard Burr, Illinois Senator Mark Kirk, Arizona Senator John McCain, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, Ohio Senator Rob Portman, and Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey.

This isn't the first time the GOP has passed something near and dear to Hillary's heart. The "doc-fix" included an extension of the Child Health Insurance Program which she championed during Bill Clinton's administration.

On the upside, such as it is, all the GOP Senators who are going to run for President voted against this amendment.

It's also mostly a symbolic act and doesn't set up a program or carry the force of law. On the other hand, symbolism is important. This is how government grows. Liberals propose something and a handful of "reasonable" Republicans decide to work with them. Suddenly the question isn't whether or not this big government mandate is something we should do, it's simply a question over how to cut a deal to do it. Anyone not supporting the expansion is immediately branded "anti-family" and "obstructionists". And we all now how that ends.

Wasn't the idea of having control of both houses of Congress to make the Democrats take tough votes and force Obama to veto popular stuff? That doesn't seem to be how this is working out.

SIXTEEN GOP Senators voted to help put a crack in the dyke. It's just a matter of time before the pressure builds and everyone decides to ride the wave instead of being drowned by it.

Thank God for the GOP majority!

57 The GOP establishment:

-- "We're out of power. We have to retake the House before we can even begin to get things done."

-- "Okay, okay, we got the House. But we can't *possibly* be effectual in opposition to the Democrats unless we get the Senate, too."

-- "We hear you! Pipe down already! Listen, all we have are the House and the Senate. Without control of the Presidency, all that amounts to is a fart in a hurricane."

It should be right around this point that we recall what happened the last time that the GOP establishment simultaneously controlled the House, the Senate, and the White House.

To wit: domestic discretionary spending growing at the fastest rate since Lyndon Johnson. Ethanol mandates. Light bulb bans. The DHS. The TSA. Medicare Part D. Sarbanes-Oxley. Harriet freaking Miers seriously proposed for the Supreme Court. John freaking Roberts actually installed at the head of the Supreme Court. Reauthorization of the Democrats' political crown jewel, the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Two colossally expensive and poorly conceptualized overseas military adventures, both of which ended up as humiliating failures.

Why bother to vote Republican if it just means more of this crap?

In February 2009, the producer of the The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings film trilogy Barrie M. Osborne was attached to produce a new movie about Muhammad. The film is to be financed by a Qatari media company and will be supervised by Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi.[7]

And yet, the vast majority of Native Americans in my area prefer to be called "Indians."

I guess they didn't get the memo from the OC Police telling them what they should want to be called.

I asked the elderly gentleman behind the counter of my favorite Rez smoke shop one day why they prefer "Indian."

He smiled and said, "Indian" is associated with warriors and bravery and all that. "Native American" is just something whites made up, it means nothing to us. Which would you rather be called?

I just smiled and said "point taken."

94 Murray's amendment would devote funds "relating to efforts to improve workplace benefits and reduce health care costs, which may include measures to allow Americans to earn paid sick time to address their own health needs and the health needs of their families, and to promote equal employment opportunities."

What does that even mean? No, seriously, what do those words mean in that order? Because the hell.

Paid sick time and vacation time and personal time is between me and my employer. If I don't like what the employer offers, then I can leave. An employer can put in whatever level of benefit it wants and adjust that should such that not work out and the employer not get the types of employees it wants. That's how it works, that's how all of this works.

Or, well, they could if we had an even half way towards free market economy.

The psychopaths for whom I used to work once implemented a fairly draconian policy that you could not make up time and use that for going to the doctor but instead had to use half a vacation day.

The staff promptly began scheduling doctors appointments for early afternoon and then enjoying their afternoon off. Oh and the staff started leaving at 5:00 p.m. on the dot and not coming in on weekends and not working through lunch. You know, reacting exactly how anyone who had ever met another human being could have predicted.

I don't believe that policy made it a month.

I genuinely think the average low info voter looks at this and thinks "I guess the GOP was trying to pull a fast one and legalize gay discrimination. Even the people that signed the bill into law are now saying so."

So now, any religious freedom bill is going to have this taint. This whole exercise was a BIG step backwards.

These Governors should have quickly signed the bill, it would have already been forgotten about by now, but instead they made sure to embarass themselves and everyone that defended the bill twisting in the wind.

233 McAdams, your comment (I think) refers to the widely-discussed "missing" Romney voters in 2012.

Just curious if you or anyone else here has done the homework my lazy alienated a** has not done, and looked up the data from that massive exit-poll done every presidential cycle, which actually would be the closest thing to an answer as to why Romney lost?

I think it's done by the APSA (political scientists), and is fairly reliable since (1) simple concrete questions - who did you vote for, what's your demographic (2) it's massive and has a very small margin of error.

Anyway, it's been a pretty good window on who actually voted, for whom, and to some extent why, for many presidential cycles. Yet I've seen no reference to it since the catastrophe of 2012.

244 Totally OT, but the Washington Times site? Holy shit, Literally two paragraph news story that was difficult to even read because of two pop up ads, ads on both sides squeezing in the margins, ads below the main picture of the story before the story starts, ads after the first paragraph of a two paragraph story, ads below the story before the comments, and finally ads below the Washington Times header and news.

247 Drew thanks for your posts, I find them informative - in fact, though they are obviously brief and intended mostly to spark discussion, it's pretty stark how "lonely" your sorts of observations are. I mean that the "press", incl. the "conservative" press, hardly even begins to really cover things as they are.

It's always the same make-believe false framework, in which increasingly insane Dem/lib actions are simply stipulated as the norm, and any GOP opposition is caricatured as obstructionism, etc. In the "conservative" press there is usually little more than some shallow personality-centric drama about leadership vs. insurgents.

Actual principles, budgetary implications, concrete or nearly concrete consequences? Nada.

248 Man, The Five has officially jumped the shark.

Perino and Gutfeld both on their high horses against religious freedom (see Hot Gas)

I stopped watching The Five about a month ago as they started heading leftward.

Gutfeld used to be my hero. But, since leaving Red Eye he seems to have decided to be a "serious" commentator now. He's just turned into a surly scold and a freakin' RINO.

Ugh.

Hell, this crap's even on ESPN. It's hard to ignore.

We each have vacation and personal time off that could be used during organized counter protests.

Sure the progressives use their institutionalized muscle, teachers, students, union goons, the indolent but we could build just as effective an army.

McAdams, your comment (I think) refers to the widely-discussed "missing" Romney voters in 2012.

Just curious if you or anyone else here has done the homework my
lazy alienated a** has not done, and looked up the data from that
massive exit-poll done every presidential cycle, which actually would be
the closest thing to an answer as to why Romney lost?

Posted by: rhomboid

It was mainly do to low Republican turnout.

Romney won the independent vote and lost the election. Bush lost the independent vote and won the election in 2004.

Had the same number of Republicans simply showed up in 2012 as did in 2004, Romney would have easily won. Obama's turnout was down dramatically from 2008.

I actually think the Mormon thing creeped up but you're never going to se it in polling, the Evangelical vote was really down. I was amazed how many Republican voters I knew said that the Mormon thing was a big issue for them, with some not voting for him because of it. It doesn't take very much of this to swing an election.

Here's an interesting article about missing Evangelical voters

If all you scumbag liberturdians spent half as much time bad-mouthing the scum of the earth -- dimocraps, maybe we wouldn't have to bend dimocrap filth over and kiss their fucking asses every time we tried to get legislation through.

But, nope.... All you numbskull liberturdian bitches got is -- Bitching...

Here's the scoreboard --

Republlicans -- 18 Presidencies.

dimocraps -- (even though they were around 20 years before us) 14 Presidencies.

liberturdian douchebags: Zero (0) Presidencies

And we should listen to you douche-nozzles..... Why, exactly?

Go away or shut the fuck up, liberturdians. Preferably both.

Yesterday a moron-probably Allen G-made such a good point that I think it should be sent to every conservative talk show host. The point was that the RFRA bill shows us that sadly the Bill of Rights could never be added to our Constitution today. It makes an Article 5 convention very scary.

Oh wow, you're one of those.

Santorum lost his last election in his home state by around 20 points and wanted to make his campaign about married people using birth control.

Newt was far and away the most open borders Republican, further to the Left than even Jeb Bush. Remember his idea to just let immigrant communities decide who gets to stay? It was similar to his idea of putting mirrors on the moon to have 24/7 daylight to fight crime. Crazy.

268 Prediction for 2016:

Senate goes back to democrat control (as if it isn't now).
The HOR goes democrat or so slim a margin as to be democrat (as if it isn't now).
We get another democrat president, probably the former Maryland governor.

Why?
All because the republicans were given control to stop Obama and the fascism he supports and only helped him and his religion. The donks don't need to do a thing, just let the GOPe shit on its base every other day.

GOPe, you arrogant assholes, you just killed the country.

Apparently he's now stumping for president of Club for Government Growth. He's still CFG's poster child top-of-the-page endorsement checking their webpage a moment ago.

I distrust "comprehensive" PAC's like this where they cover so many issues and issue vague percentage ratings that a guy like Toomey can play around the margins like this vote indicates.

Posted by: SocietyIs2Blame at April 01, 2015 02:50 PM (QKIQb)

271 No, this is NOT how it was supposed to work out! We voted for the Repubes because we wanted them to stop the radical lefty agenda that has been rammed down the throats of Americans against their will. But this is not what is happening. The Republican party is in full surrender mode. Pelosi still controls the house, and McConnell could really care less.

How anyone could ever vote Republican AGAIN after all of this is beyond me. I will not, and I refuse to hold my nose again. I will never, ever vote Republican again. Not only have they lied to us, but they have actually called those of us who voted for them the most horrible names.

The country is already done, and the Republican party, which was placed in power in Congress in order to help get the country back on track, has been complicit in the country's destruction. Honestly, if the Dems controlled Congress right now, what would they be doing differently? Nothing. So, why bother voting for a Republican ever again since they are just as bad as the Democrats? Why?
