GOP Budget Includes Provision To Slash Government Spending And Repeal Dozens Of Costly Mandates
April Fools! A bunch of Republicans joined with Democrats to move forward on a major liberal agenda item.
It's old, from last week, but I just came across an interesting tidbit about the Senate GOP's budget...it includes a provision that could lead to implementing one of Hillary's likely campaign priorities.Not every budget vote in Thursday's Senate marathon is particularly telling. The vote on SA 798, one of Washington Senator Patty Murray's amendments, is an exception. Titled the Deficit-Neutral Reserve Fund for Legislation to Allow Americans to Earn Paid Sick Time, Murray's amendment would devote funds "relating to efforts to improve workplace benefits and reduce health care costs, which may include measures to allow Americans to earn paid sick time to address their own health needs and the health needs of their families, and to promote equal employment opportunities." The amendment retooled the Healthy Families Act, a bill that faces a steep hill in a Republican Congress. Yet unlike most of the Democrat's amendments this one was agreed to, picking up every member of Murray's party and 16 Republicans. From the Republican side: New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte, North Carolina Senator Richard Burr, Illinois Senator Mark Kirk, Arizona Senator John McCain, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, Ohio Senator Rob Portman, and Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey.This isn't the first time the GOP has passed something near and dear to Hillary's heart. The "doc-fix" included an extension of the Child Health Insurance Program which she championed during Bill Clinton's administration. On the upside, such as it is, all the GOP Senators who are going to run for President voted against this amendment. It's also mostly a symbolic act and doesn't set up a program or carry the force of law. On the other hand, symbolism is important. This is how government grows. Liberals propose something and a handful of "reasonable" Republicans decide to work with them. Suddenly the question isn't whether or not this big government mandate is something we should do, it's simply a question over how to cut a deal to do it. Anyone not supporting the expansion is immediately branded "anti-family" and "obstructionists". And we all now how that ends. Wasn't the idea of having control of both houses of Congress to make the Democrats take tough votes and force Obama to veto popular stuff? That doesn't seem to be how this is working out. SIXTEEN GOP Senators voted to help put a crack in the dyke. It's just a matter of time before the pressure builds and everyone decides to ride the wave instead of being drowned by it. Thank God for the GOP majority!

Paid sick time and vacation time and personal time is between me and my employer. If I don't like what the employer offers, then I can leave. An employer can put in whatever level of benefit it wants and adjust that should such that not work out and the employer not get the types of employees it wants. That's how it works, that's how all of this works.
Or, well, they could if we had an even half way towards free market economy.
The psychopaths for whom I used to work once implemented a fairly draconian policy that you could not make up time and use that for going to the doctor but instead had to use half a vacation day.
The staff promptly began scheduling doctors appointments for early afternoon and then enjoying their afternoon off. Oh and the staff started leaving at 5:00 p.m. on the dot and not coming in on weekends and not working through lunch. You know, reacting exactly how anyone who had ever met another human being could have predicted.
I don't believe that policy made it a month.

It's a place holder. Budget resolutions just give the authorizing committees top-line numbers to deal with.
What that amendment means is, "if we create this new program later it will require money, here's where the authorizing committees can take money from existing programs to pay for the new one and keep the total spent the same in the end."

If the people that are going to take up this issue are only going to publicly crumble, then yes, I think it's counterproductive to take the issue up.
If we now have the public watching this and the same people pushing the issue are now basically saying these laws ARE bad and we need to change them, or they are just simply lying about the intent of the bills, to me that's several steps backwards.

Honest question, do you think what was accomplished by Indiana was worthwhile if there's also some sort of follow up bill that will likely make homosexuals a new protected class in order to "clarify"?
I absolutely support the intent of what IN and AR were trying to do, but it's sort of like would I support a General that wants to charge the enemy if he plans on surrendering as soon he gets there? All we're doing is taking casualties before losing.
We clearly need a reboot in how we protect religious freedoms, and we can't even count on deep Red State Governors to implement something like this without crumbling.

I genuinely think the average low info voter looks at this and thinks "I guess the GOP was trying to pull a fast one and legalize gay discrimination. Even the people that signed the bill into law are now saying so."
So now, any religious freedom bill is going to have this taint. This whole exercise was a BIG step backwards.
These Governors should have quickly signed the bill, it would have already been forgotten about by now, but instead they made sure to embarass themselves and everyone that defended the bill twisting in the wind.

Maybe but he's not alone. I stopped posting a few months before the election because it was pretty clear people just wanted to win and the idea of pointing out how pointless that would be would go over like a lead balloon.
At no point did Ace ever say anything to me about letting up or shutting up. Quite the opposite in fact.
The reality is people wanted to believe it would be different *this time*. It wasn't and it won't be. At least not in the foreseeable future.
And you know what? The majority of people swearing they'll never vote GOP again and certainly never vote for Jeb will be singing a very different tune come November 2016. And then they will be surprised again when nothing changes.

I think it's done by the APSA (political scientists), and is fairly reliable since (1) simple concrete questions - who did you vote for, what's your demographic (2) it's massive and has a very small margin of error.
Anyway, it's been a pretty good window on who actually voted, for whom, and to some extent why, for many presidential cycles. Yet I've seen no reference to it since the catastrophe of 2012.

When Mitt Romneycare won the nomination in 2012 I said I wouldn't vote for him and I didn't.
I told everyone that he GOPe would take his victory in the primary as a sign that they could advance ANY leftist agenda item with impunity and still get most of the "conservative" note.
And unfortunately I was 100% right.
Had we turned out in mass for the Constitution party guy in 2012 we likely wouldn't be in this position right now because the GOPe would be afraid of us. But right now they've called us out, see that collectively we are full of shit, and will continue to treat us like Monica in the Oval Office until something changes.

It was mainly do to low Republican turnout.
Romney won the independent vote and lost the election. Bush lost the independent vote and won the election in 2004.
Had the same number of Republicans simply showed up in 2012 as did in 2004, Romney would have easily won. Obama's turnout was down dramatically from 2008.
I actually think the Mormon thing creeped up but you're never going to se it in polling, the Evangelical vote was really down. I was amazed how many Republican voters I knew said that the Mormon thing was a big issue for them, with some not voting for him because of it. It doesn't take very much of this to swing an election.

Santorum lost his last election in his home state by around 20 points and wanted to make his campaign about married people using birth control.
Newt was far and away the most open borders Republican, further to the Left than even Jeb Bush. Remember his idea to just let immigrant communities decide who gets to stay? It was similar to his idea of putting mirrors on the moon to have 24/7 daylight to fight crime. Crazy.
