Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | What the Hell Really Happened to Harry Reid?Reporters are just accepting the claim that he was attacked by an ornery exercise band, huh? John Hindraker of Powerline wonders about what really might have happened. When a guy shows up at a Las Vegas emergency room on New Year's Day with severe facial injuries and broken ribs, and gives as an explanation the functional equivalent of "I walked into a doorknob," it isn't hard to guess that he ran afoul of mobsters. Yet the national press has studiously averted its eyes from Reid's condition, and has refused to investigate the cause of his injuries. To my knowledge, every Washington reporter has at least pretended to believe Reid's story, and none, as far as I can tell, has inquired further. So he was working out late on New Years Eve, huh? Let's consider what would really happen if someone where hit this badly by an exercise band. I work out with exercise bands. I am in fact often afraid that they will either snap or, more likely, slip free of where they're anchored, and hit me in the face. I don't know if this is a real possibility or not. I do know the possibility of a face hit by an exercise band has occurred to me. But here's why I don't believe it in the case of Harry Reid: Why isn't he warning people about this being a real possibility? I'll tell you what, if this happened to me, believe me, I'd be on the blog telling you about it, and warning you to be very careful with these bands. In fact, if an exercise band took my right eye away from me, I'd be telling you to wear goggles at all times when using them. Actually I think I'd tell you to join a gym -- it's safer. I also would be telling you who manufactured these particular bands, so that you would be warned about possible slipshod manufacture. Is Reid doing any of these things? No, of course not. He puts out the lie, then tries to run away from it as soon as possible. This is why I knew Anthony Weiner was lying about his "Hacked!" claim. If someone gets hacked, this is a very big deal, and very angering, and that person would move heaven and earth to get justice from this very serious violation. Instead, Weiner just wanted us all to move past it and forget it ever happened. This is not possible. If someone really were violated, they would demand an investigation and serious consequences for the violators. Harry Reid's story is that he, a rich man thanks to being part of the lucrative Legislation Industry, had to resort to using a fairly cheap piece of exercise equipment instead of using the more common real gym equipment men of his means could afford. Dumbbells are kind of expensive, but not so expensive that a Legislation Magnate couldn't afford a couple of racks of nice rubber-encased dumbbells. But no, he's using cheap exercise bands. And then when one allegedly snaps, or tears free of its anchor point, and robs him of the use of his right eye, he says nothing about it? He doesn't warn people? He doesn't start a Senatorial Investigation into the safety of such equipment? Why doesn't he tell us what brand of exercise band blinded him in one eye. Is this because this nasty, pugilistic man has just decided to be mellow about the company that took one of his eyes away from him? Or is this because there is no exercise band manufacturer to complain about, because there was never any exercise band at all? Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1
His Exercise band vendor was Guido's of Las Vegas.

I read Hindraker's article and agree with his assessment; that is, Harry Reid was badly beaten with fists, with brass knuckles also possibly employed. (The extent of his injuries indicate their use. Ribs are harder to break than movies would indicate.) Hindraker guesses it was one of the mobsters who own Harry Reid, pissed off that Reid didn't come through on a deal. It's the best guess out there given Reid's Nevada connections and multi-million dollar net worth.
I'm not an expert on many things and don't know what it says about me that I know a lot about hitting and getting hit, but yeah, somebody tooled up Harry Reid. It's strange to me that whoever did the beating didn't stay away from Reid's face while working him over since the loss of a Senator's eye might invite a lot of unwanted attention. Whoever it was evidently didn't care, and that's the part I find unsettling. Posted by: troyriser at March 30, 2015 07:38 PM (gJU39) 124

Personally, I think the very idea of a protected class is dangerous. This law will bite them on the ass. I expect some leftists to demand "Hail Satan" cakes, or some queer group to form a Church of Ganymede, and then a lawsuit via the federal Equal Rights act will follow. I would rather see no protected classes, and then just let boycotts and the free marker sort out bigotry. Posted by: Kristophr at March 30, 2015 07:38 PM (6fIOn) 125

I'm kinda glad his worthless ass got slapped around although I have my doubt's about an exercise band doing that much physical damage. Rubber or whatever material just doesn't have that kind of kinetic energy to break ribs. A bruise? Maybe, but the thing is, all of it's energy is spent the second it's released and the mass of the material just isn't that much to start with.

Vito and Rocco came round, as they do regularly when Reid is in town. Reid told the security guys to let them in and take a break while certain matters were discussed privately. Vito and Rocco weren't too happy about Reid failing to deliver on previously agreed items. Reid got mouthy with them. They gave him some dental work on the mouth, and the rest of his face. Security came back to find Reid out cold, and took him to the ER. Simple as that. Posted by: torquewrench at March 30, 2015 07:55 PM (noWW6) 218

If it was a beating, it wasn't an organized crime thing. They wouldn't risk it - one, the guy(s) who did the beating would almost certainly get caught for that (or something else down the road) and be very inclined to trade all they knew about the Reid beating for a nice deal. Two, they're not really going to profit from it as an institution; they'd be a lot more likely to let slip some info that would ruin Reid, rather than beating him. Three, even if they would profit, there's no guarantee that a simple beating would trigger it; unless you get *real* nasty, most people can take an ass-kicking or two, and they'd be unlikely to get another shot at him. Four; that's pretty high-profile for any organized crime outfit, at least on the domestic front. Colombian/Mexican cartels have no problem taking out pols in their home country, but it would be a risky move here - and one they've stayed away from previously.

In Spain, where the left-wing geniuses in government had passed a massive feed-in tariff for solar farms providing power to the national grid, the local wiseguys bought up a bunch of decrepit half-functional solar farms, trucked in honking big diesel generators, and promptly collected a ton of money. Eventually the wiseguys figured out that the government was so stupid that they would get paid lavishly for pushing "solar" power to the grid even at night. Which they did, for years on end. I've been a physical therapist for over 30 years and have used exercise bands and tubes more times than Harry Reid has ever told the truth. Ace is right, if one of those beggers (especially the higher resistance ones) ever slips off a door knob or out of your hand or whatever, it can give you a pretty good whack.
That said, I have seen patients who are on blood thinners get snapped by some medium resistance bands and the next day they're bruised a bit but NOTHING like Henderson Hard-luck Harry. Now, if he fell (and I think that's the story he's going with now) that might be a different deal, but that's not what the original story was as I recall. I don't know who slapped him around or beat him up and obviously I don't know why - but I do know that I'll buy that person a drink if I ever do find out. OT: Supreme Court upholds lower court ruling that California school was within legal standards when requiring American students to remove (or turn inside out) American flag imagery (colors?) on t-shirts during Cinco de Mayo celebration at school due to fears of violence.
I do not know details of the legal aspects of the case and this may be a perfectly reasonable ruling by the court. What is not reasonable is that the school officials took the action they did as opposed to cancelling the Cinco de Mayo celebration or banning Mexican-themed dress or calling in police to deal with any violence against the American students. Or given the fact of the schools action, it is quite unfortunate all school officials were not run out of town. But then the majority (for two more decades) American population is de-balled and deserving of trek down the road to complete dispossession. Their place will be taken by stronger, more aggressive communities. Fortunately everyone will still be able to endlessly debate marginal tax rates and the benefits of massive deficit spending so all will be well. Modern cars really are safer than older ones. Even besides government mandates, carmakers have the benefit of decades of experience in designing them and analyzing crashes.
I remember the movie "The Postman Always Rings Twice". It took place in the 30s or 40s. There was a horrific scene of a car crash, where a woman went through the windshield which shattered and blinded her. That was before the invention of safety glass. Airplanes are also safer nowadays. Well, except for the occasional psycho co-pilot. Posted by: rickl at March 30, 2015 09:27 PM (sdi6R) 508

You're assuming that the Senate matters. Or that any elected DC office matters. Here in Colorado: I got the definite vibe that the local Dems let Udall drift, and that they rallied around salvaging Hickenlooper and state-level legislators. (And maybe Polis.) If the Senators don't matter, then why not rough one or the other up, pour encourager les autres. (I'm here thinking on behalf of a mobster and not recommending actually doing this, gods no.) In case it hasn't been mentioned, Reid's brother was arrested for DUI a couple days later and got into it with the cop. If it was a family fight, it would explain no police.
The idea the mob roughed up Reid over some failure to deliver is pretty deep in the conspiracy swamp. First, they don't rough up potential witnesses, they make sure they never testify. Second, Harry has never let them down, not since he was head of the Nevada Gaming Commission. Posted by: Adjoran at March 30, 2015 10:38 PM (QIQ6j) 594

My dad died at 83 on New Years Day. Before that, he was on all kinds of blood thinners and bruised super easily. The worst of those bruises would fade within two weeks. Posted by: troyriser at March 30, 2015 07:38 PM (gJU39)

There was this kid I grew up with; he was younger than me. Sorta looked up to me, you know. We did our first work together, worked our way out of the street. Things were good, we made the most of it. During Prohibition, we ran molasses into Canada... made a fortune, your father, too. As much as anyone, I loved him and trusted him. Later on he had an idea to build a city out of a desert stop-over for GI's on the way to the West Coast. That kid's name was Harry Reid, and the city he invented was Las Vegas. This was a great man, a man of vision and guts and nose. And there isn't even a plaque, or a signpost or a statue of him in that town! Someone put a power band through his eye. No one knows who gave the order. When I heard it, I wasn't angry; I knew Harry, I knew he was head-strong, talking loud, saying stupid things. So when he turned up dead, I let it go. And I said to myself, this is the business we've chosen. I didn't ask who gave the order, because it had nothing to do with business!
