More importantly, Engel's report advances this to an allegation of betrayal, not just incompetence. Clearly, Saudi Arabia has little confidence left in the Obama administration; that much is evident from their actions to cut the US out of the loop on this coalition. Engel's report strongly suggests that it's not just incompetence that has the Saudis and other US allies rattled, but a suspicion that they're being purposefully sold out by Obama to get a deal with Iran that will unleash their ambitions to dominate the region.
The Clintons are in tight with the Saudi's. I wonder how this is playing out behind the scenes.

We are obviously in an "unprecedented" time of idiocy and disastrously stupid policies created by absurdly unfit people supported (passively or actively) by a pathetic electorate and collapsed institutions. This probably vastly understates the problem.
But opposing ISIS in Iraq while Iran also happens to do so is no part of the problem, and doesn't present any contradiction unusual for war-time expediency.

Hits to our reliability (esp. for intel stuff) started under Bush, but not because of him, directly. The leaks to media, the media running them even when requested to not do so (esp. SWIFT) - these were a serious blow to normal operational credibility among even the most important allies (NATO etc.), and of course also properly interpreted by such as Arab regimes with whom we share interests and intel (note I didn't use the word "ally").
We are, of course WAY past that sort of already-troubling stage.
Now it's an issue of literal distrust of the USG to honor mutual interests and operational secrecy requirements, based on actual policy and mindset.
Like many of the successes in intel, this sort of damage can be hard to quantify, hard to make concrete. It's the things foreign regimes *don't* do, the ideas they sit on, the tips they keep to themselves, the opportunities they simply let sit. Economists would call hidden opportunity costs. Huge, and yet hard to quanitfy.

Saudi: close intel and regional defense cooperation, war against AQ and others, willing proxy and cut-out for shady ops beyond counting, base for power projection against US enemies in the Gulf, and on downside entanglement with wahhabist and extremist elements who bankroll bad s**t outside the Kingdom.

Exactly. Sisi was interviewed recently and said something along the lines of, "if we dont get more handouts from other countries, Egypt will collapse". Saudi Arabia has been giving them billions since we reduced aid after the "coup" to remove Morsi.
But we're also still giving them a shit ton of money and access to buy military equipment etc.
Oh, but even with all of the us money and saudi money they will collapse like libya if they don't create an economy and reduce their welfare state.

Last time it happened, the region was an entirely different world - including Egypt, which is conspicuously short on pan-Arab or fake revolutionary ambitions any more. They now fight in the same trench, to borrow another stupid Arab expression of martial solidarity.
And not worried about the Yemen operation at all. Geez it's Yemen, FFS. Somalia with more interesting border disputes and a tigther clan structure.
Anything short of sheer chaos there is basically success. And putting the (expediently) pro-Tehran Shi'a tribe back in its place is really all it's about.

The Wahhabis basically run a parallel (religious) government to the secular one headed by the Saud family.
It is those people who export Wahhabism and militant Islam around the world with madrassas, mosques, money, weapons, etc. etc.
The biggest funders of Al Qaeda and ISIS and every sunni terrorist group around the world are citizens of Saudi Arabia and the gulf states.
The Saud family really is walking a tight rope because they can't condemn the religious leaders (like Sisi did) too loudly, lest they lose control of their country, but they have to attempt to tamp down on the funding of overseas terrorism to keep the oil money flowing from the west and the protection of the us govt.
