At the very least, why don't we stop pretending that they are "victims" and insisting that "something bad still might have happened" to them, after it becomes patently obvious that the accuser is nothing more than a bald-faced liar (see, e.g., Jackie of UVA, the stripper at the Duke Lacrosse party, mattress girl, etc.).

Most of us on the Right, even those whose primary identity is Moron, do not believe that the personal is per se political and, in fact, worry that we are letting politics bleed too much into what truly matters. The Left views everything as political and thus there is no escape. That will drive you nuts. For example, last night I'd had it and walked away from ye olde internets for the night and watched a movie (Godzilla the new one raaawwwrr) because I found myself getting so worked up over everything. The Left is incapable of doing that. Hell, the Left can't just plain old enjoy the stompy stompy atomic fire breathy without having to be all allegorical with it. That is no way to live.

I had not previously considered the intersection of privacy statements re: no selling of personal data vs. the bankruptcy trustee's obligation to monetize every possible asset coupled with preemption. The elegant solution is to amend bankruptcy law to require that any statement on sale of personal data by the company be honored in bankruptcy but that's sane so that won't happen. Shall ponder.

I maintain my position that of course those in the media are confused that a politician would, get this, obey a law he doesn't like. C'mon, everyone knows that doesn't happen.

That's it!! For me, the Christian life is not ultimately about being a "better person." It's about transformed into the image of Christ. If- through a slow process I am transformed into the image of Christ as much as possible in this life I will be a better person because I am more like Christ and I will; be a content person because I am more like him. So that's why these whole discussions of "Can you be a ethical/moral person without religious faith (and the nasty contentiousness that often accompanies it from both sides) just tire me out. Of course, you can be a better person (Whatever that means) without religious faith. You can be be better person with all kinds of things-counselling, therapy, exercise. I don't want to be a better person. I want to be like Christ and it's only God who can get me there.

I hope that Rayado who writes so much better than I do and presents a winsome view of Christianity (And BTW, I agree with his/her critique of Robertson's comments) will post more often!

Among other things they confirm that the pilot outside the cabin has an emergency entry code for the case of incapacitation of the pilot in the cabin. It works unless it's actively blocked from inside the cabin.

So there is zero doubt that the co-pilot deliberately flew the craft into the mountain.

Oh, and because people are rotten: Laubnitz' FB page was taken down. There are already fake pages in his name and a couple of new Twitter handles.

I, personally, am tentatively on the "pressure failure" (whether windscreen or other reason) side of things here.

Unless there's more from whoever was at the controls when the plane went down- like a "Take that f*cking management goons!" or "Al la snackbar!" or whatever.

Typically, if you "want to make a point," you do things to make the point very clear. In an industry where everyone is keyed to assume electrical/mechanical failure over pilot error, and pilot error over pilot choice, you'd think you'd at least record a message, right?

Supposedly the pilot should have been able to regain entry to the cockpit. That he couldn't indicates that either he never tried entering the code, or that the co-pilot deliberately prevented that.
Since the pilot was heard trying to break the door down, I'm going with #2.

Cockpit recordings do not indicate any windscreen compromise, which would have been heard

His breathing was normal indicating he did not have a heart attack or other physical problem

Okay so people have considered the what if someone has a heart attack while the other pilot is in the bathroom issue. That's good to know and I'm not kidding.

As far as the rest of it, we are back in pure and total speculation. I do think we can made the probable cause intentional pilot action. The why is the key now.

In a way it will be worse if it isn't some kind of religious/ideological motivation. At least those, as horrible as they are, have been causing humans to slaughter one another since time immemorial.

Just because is terrifying. See re: waste of DNA in NC who shot those people over a parking space.

Lubitz was 28, lived with his parents, had his dream job. He'd started glider piloting as a teenager.

Got the GW job after completing a rigorous flight college. His time there had been interrupted. Reason and duration not yet known. Was re-admitted after demonstrating his commitment.

Lufthansa has a mandatory reporting requirement, if you suspect odd behavior of a colleague you must report it. Nothing was reported against him.

There is on the surface absolutely nothing to indicate anything about his motive.

His goal was to crash the plane into the Memphis sort facality. The crew fought back and subdued him, but several were severely injured. Would-be hijacker got life in prison. After his divorce, my brother in law took in roommates, and one was a pilot. I'm sure he could afford much more than my BIL charged in rent, but since he traveled so much, he didn't seem to be bothered by having a crappy room at home.

I spent my adolescence in The City, but it's changed so much I wouldn't know where to begin. The DeYoung Museum in GG Park is cool, and it's right across from the Academy of Sciences, which is expensive but fun. There's also a Japanese garden adjacent to the DeYoung.

There's a fairly new Walt Disney museum on the Presidio, in an old barracks next to the cemetery, which is worth seeing in itself.

I'm told North Beach has become Chinese, so while there are likely some good Chinese eateries there, the Italian ones may be gone.

Lufthansa press conference summary

Lufthansa confirmed that co-pilot Andreas Lubitz appeared to have prevented the captain from re-entering the cabin after a toilet break, and placed the Airbus A320 that resulted in the crash that killed all 150 on board.

Spohr said that it appears the captain punched in the emergency number into the cockpit door to gain entry, but the co-pilot deployed the five-minute over-ride. He said that, irrespective of all the sophisticated safety devices, you can never exclude such an individual event, adding no system in the world could manage to do that.

From other reports, the co-pilot's religion is "unknown" and there's a 6 month gap is his life of "dunno where he is".

I am deeply suspicious about the involvement of the anthropology department from the one university. Yeah, you have no conflict about wanting to keep those for yourself. Nope. None.

I love the admission in there that the house was raided and all the stuff taken and no one even knows or, apparently, has the slightest clue, if any laws were broken.

The problem with the anti-tomb robber bill is that it is an ex post facto law. It is extraordinary likely that at the time he bought or found the item, the buying or taking out of country was legal. But given the levels of record keeping in the various regions of the world, there's no way to show that. Thus the assumption is well you have to give it back any way.

360 I can't even imagine the horror of looking out the window of a plane and seeing a mountain coming up.

A few years ago we had a horrifying experience on a commuter plane from here to Charlotte to catch a flight to Vegas. It was stormy, and on the final approach, suddenly the plane literally fell I don't know how far, and I could see tree tops right below the plane. The plane accelerated hard and we were thrown back against the seats. I was holding my husband's hand so hard, and literally let out a little cry (and I wasn't alone). We circled the airport for quite a while, with no word from the cockpit, and finally landed. Even the male flight attendant looked freaked out.

I refuse to fly now if there's even a threat of bad weather.

One of my old customers and I rented cars in SF and drove down the coast to Monterey, took a 2 day Bobby Rahal driving course at Laguna Seca then played 3 courses at Pebble Beach.

Skip the Pebble Beach golf, it's highly over rated.

There's speculation, I see, that the co-pilot seemed perfectly content and didn't raise any red flags. I remember reading somewhere that a great many people who have decided on suicide don't show depressive symptoms, but rather a certain calm euphoria because they have finally made a decision and know that very soon the pain they live with will be gone.

Just my 2c, but I'd say simply because the pilot didn't seem unhappy doesn't mean he wasn't unhappy.

Agreed. It was a bit heartwarming, though, when I walked in (after, geez, 30 years) and got to reminisce about the old building with one of the customer-guide-helper-whatever persons. The alligator pit is still there, and they kept a few of the dioramas. The pendulum was moved, but it's still there.

Remember that French flight where none of the crew seemed to realize that the plane had stalled and was plummeting?

In the present case, the plane did not nose dive straight into the ground. The descent was fairly rapid but not unduly so. The passengers didn't appear to be alarmed until they saw the mountains rushing up toward them.
