One Pilot Locked Out of Cockpit in Germanwings Crash; Audio from Black Box Reveals Pilot Was Trying to Smash Down the Door

Yes it's as you expected.
A senior military official involved in the investigation described “very smooth, very cool” conversation between the pilots during the early part of the flight from Barcelona to Dusseldorf. Then the audio indicated that one of the pilots left the cockpit and could not re-enter. "The guy outside is knocking lightly on the door and there is no answer," the investigator said. "And then he hits the door stronger and no answer. There is never an answer." He said, "You can hear he is trying to smash the door down." .... "We don't know yet the reason why one of the guys went out," said the official, who requested anonymity because the investigation is continuing. "But what is sure is that at the very end of the flight, the other pilot is alone and does not open the door."
What I assume, then, is that the man at the controls contrived to get the copilot to exit the cockpit, then locked him out, then deliberately murdered 149 innocent souls. It is the man at the controls who did this, obviously, given that he never issued any distress calls like "My maniac copilot is trying to kill us." People are now asking, as they should: What was this pilot's name? Alternate Theory: Well, I don't see this as likely, but:

364 I read speculation earlier today that the windshield failed.
That could still be the case if one of the pilots was outside the cockpit and the other one was incapacitated and couldn't let him back in.
But I still haven't heard the names of the pilots, and that could be what is known as a "clue".

I don't know what the cruising speed of an A320 is, but I would assume it is higher than that. If the plane nose-dived from 38,000 feet I would expect it to be going a lot faster.
I remember an incident years ago where a Boeing 727 exceeded Mach 1 in an unplanned dive, and survived.

They've done that for years. Friend of mine has a husband who is a commercial pilot. She said he is tested several times a year for emotional and mental health, level of stress, etc.
That doesn't mean someone can't give all the correct answers.

If you've got a code he just says no, and yes probably gets killed. Still keeps the cockpit secure while allowing access.
Either way, it's the Muslims fault. Either the pilot went all Jihadi or the systems put in place to protect from Muslims prevented any hope to save the flight.

It looked very odd to me at the time, since when do heads of state use plane accidents as photo opp?
My guess is that they had info before it was public (names, history, internet posts by pilot,...) and started the terrorism spin before it was official.

After he leaves to get some, the pilot in the cockpit keels over from a massive stroke. Co-pilot can't get back in, plane wasn't on autopilot for some reason, it crashes.

After he leaves to get some, the pilot in the cockpit keels over from a massive stroke. Co-pilot can't get back in, plane wasn't on autopilot for some reason, it crashes.

Well, almost all airliners do NOT fall out of the sky and/or fly into mountains, too.
But once in a while, a mountain does somehow manage to get in the way.
The failure to release the pilots' names is indeed highly suspicious but I'm personally not ready to leap onto the Sudden Jihad Syndrome train quite yet.

I just read the timeline.
The aircraft just reached cruising altitude and then a couple of minutes later began a rapid descent.
So let's assume the co-pilot, 30 minutes after takeoff and the plane at level flight and everything is in the green, decides this is a good time for a leak. He leaves the cockpit thinking everything is copacetic.
That's when the rapid descent begins. The moment he leaves the cockpit, we'll assume.
Think about. You want to ditch your plane. You have one brief window in which to do it while your copilot goes for a leak.

Yeah, the A320 has automatic protections built in. It still allows pretty good maneuverability but tries to prevent stalling or breaking the aircraft. I would not be surprised if it was really speed limited on the descent rather than pitch or vertical speed limited.

That's right when they always go to take a break too - or take a nap - when it's total autopilot. It seems a bit odd though that the crazy guy would just set it for a landing descent instead of pushing the yoke in.
Wouldn't the pilot get some help if he thought he was really locked out and the plane was in a slow descent? I can't believe that about 10 big hefty Germans couldn't push that door in after a couple of minutes.
This still sounds a bit weird.

Yeah, that doesn't exactly square with clearly hearing the other pilot banging on the door the entire time...I would think wind noise would have been pretty evident on the CVR...in fact, at that speed, wind-noise is probably all that would have been heard on the CVR.

And like I said upthread, I saw a graphic yesterday that showed the final speed at impact as just under 400 knots. That's not that fast; not even cruising speed for a plane like this. A power dive into the ground would likely be a lot faster than that, and might even be enough to tear off the wings on the way down.

I'm certainly no expert but consider the ATTITUDE of the aircraft when it's in a steep dive.
Very difficult to even stand and walk down the aisle during a steep descent, so imagine how hard it would be to take action and try to use brute force to break the door.

Again, on an Airbus, even if you push the control stick all the way forward, the plane will limit the speed of the plane. And forget about the pilot slumping onto the control column: An A320 literally has a joystick (sidestick) next to the pilots hand, not in front of him and NOT between his legs. It ain't happening.

No, in fact there's a lot more to it than that in an Airbus from what I understand. You've got to constantly be telling the plane what not to do if you want to deviate, and I doubt it's the flick of a switch.

It looked pretty damned good from what we've seen. Bodies in small pieces, the black boxes (one found) beaten up. Thankfully, those on board didn't know what hit them.
Reminds me of the plane taken down over PA on 9/11. They drove that thing nose-down into the ground. Nothing left.

I'm never inclined to think "terrorism" when there's a disaster in the air. You can quote safety stats all day long but my loathing of air travel always brings the first conclusion: accident, mechanical/pilot/controller combo error.
And that said, the failure to name the pilots? Just another instance of media corruption. Whatever this turns out to have been, it's journalistic malpractice that names of passengers are known but names of crew...

Why wouldn't the cockpit door seal off to have its own pressure seal when closed? That seems like a safety feature to me. That way if the rest of the plane lost pressure the pilots would still be safe to land the aircraft.

The Airbus automated flight control system can override the pilots if it thinks their actions are dangerous. However as in Air France Flt 447 they can also partially disengage to allow pilots the leeway to save the plane, but the systems may not adequately inform the pilots that has happened. What truly doomed 447 was poor crew coordination, the two copilots were fighting each other but unaware of that while the Captain failed to take command.
Or even worse, in an Aeroflot A310 flight not even tell the crew. In this flight the captain let his son hold the controls. He thought his son could do nothing because the autopilot was engaged. But the boy yanked on the yoke so hard, the autopilot partially disengaged thinking the pilots needed aileron control and the plane started to roll. But there was no distinct warning from the autopilot to the pilots informing them of this. So that A310 crashed after a terrifying descent.

I don't understand why people are saying -4000'/minute isnt abnormally fast.
I just did a little googling and the normal rate for descent for airliners is 3000-3500 fpm.
So this plane was in excess of 'normal' descent-to-land attitude. Not much but probably enough for the passengers to feel hampered by the increase G-force.

Of course with an impact of 417KTS at last reading, the QAR maybe in even smaller pieces.

Does a copilot leave the cockpit if the plane is not in level flight via autopilot? I strongly doubt it unless there's a problem with the aircraft that the copilot is investigating.
But there was no mention whatsoever of a problem with the aircraft between the pilots, that we know of.

On long flights I observe when one has to pee the head flight attendant blocks the galley to cockpit while this goes on. Maybe they need to start flying with those diapers astronauts wear (kidding...one of my favorite news stories was of the woman astronaut who wore diapers so just thought of that). Will not say which airline, but it seems effective to block the door with the tea trolley and slow peoples down trying to ack-bar. I am always on high alert (ok, sometimes I sleep)...but it is a precaution I appreciate.

The cockpit door should open easily actually. If the cockpit lost pressure and the door didn't open, the pressure loss would be so violent it would be fatal to those in the cockpit (like eyes sucked out violent). If the door opens as the pressure is lost then the pressure loss is slower and the pilots have time to get there oxygen masks on.
One reason the hijackers on 9/11 were able to break in to the cockpits so easily is that the doors were made to be broken.
Since then, at least on US planes, the doors have been made much stronger and a digital sensor unlocks the door if there is a sudden change in pressure.
If a similar system was on this plane and failed, then the pilot in the cockpit would be dead and the one in the passenger area wouldn't have much hope of getting the door open.

Now would an A320 autopilot or GPWS disable a programmed descent if high terrain were detected? Didn't I see that the last couple of reports were level, or at a lower descent rate at least?

Well yes. There was the PSA crash. Disgruntled and fired airline employee gets aboard plane by bypassing security because he still had his badges. Pulled out a handgun. Killed the guy who fired him. Then got into the cockpit, killed the pilots, and shoved the stick over. Killed everyone.
Or out of Memphis and a cargo DC-10. Employee with financial problems hops aboard as passenger with a bag. He had blunt force weapons in bag because he did not want obvious signs on the crew bodies it was murder. Luckily the crew, though badly wounded, fought back and subdued the guy. Then managed to land the plane safely. Yes the would-be attacker had insurance policies on himself in case of accidental death.

This is a Boeing training film of what to do if one of the openable cockpit windows isn't locked all the way at takeoff. Check out how loud it is about 1:40, compared with how quiet it is just a few seconds later, when he closes the window. I don't think the A320 has openable windows, but the noise would be similar.

Several problems with that article, not the least of which is that 2000 ft MSL is substantially below ground in that area, and descent began from FL380 and not FL280. Flush all data from that one, unreliable.

So they fought each other to recover the plane. Meanwhile the Captain was just standing there watching them after he returned to the cockpit. From a pressurization standpoint I'd be very surprised if the cockpit were isolated from the rest of the plane - like where the pilot was supposedly standing pounding on the door. So I'm inclined to think that cockpit window failure or other structural issue not affecting the rest of the aircraft is a non-starter.

The long-standing problem with the Airbus aircraft is that you can't really turn the computer off. They're fly-by-wire, so if you turn the computer off, you don't have flight control.
You can turn off the autopilot, but the aircraft still has its programmed--almost hard-coded--"flight envelope" that it won't let you get outside of, even in an extreme situation.
This has bothered pilots about Airbus aircraft since the beginning.
Or so I've been lead to understand, anyway.

Well, if we can keep people from killing themselves in accidents on this highway out here. I missed that accident on Leicester by only a minute or so. Fire trucks went screaming past me as I was making the turn off Patton.
And it's only going to get worse. We have about 400 or so new apartments getting ready to open up just down the road from me. Parking at the Ingles grocery is almost to a breaking point as it is.

I don't understand why people are saying -4000'/minute isnt abnormally fast.
I just did a little googling and the normal rate for descent for airliners is 3000-3500 fpm.
So this plane was in excess of 'normal' descent-to-land attitude. Not much but probably enough for the passengers to feel hampered by the increase G-force.
it's not that fast. a bit excessive for normal ops? Yes. Some of the moron aviators on here can relate when I say if ATC is late giving a crossing restriction...say...on the LVZ arrival into Teterboro then Yes....sometimes you're going down that fast. It's not that hard for the Citation X to perform like that. Throw in a nice tailwind and the feet per minute is even more to compensate and make that restriction.

One of the contributing factors on the Air France flight that crashed into the Atlantic was that they believe the pitot tube froze up and was giving false information to the flight crew. The pilots were trying to get the plane to climb, not realizing that they were in a stall condition right up until the aircraft pancaked into the ocean.
I can't buy the broken windscreen scenario because the noise in the cockpit would have been enormous. I can't buy the heart attack scenario either. The joysticks are offset from midline.
It appears to be a controlled descent at about 4,000 fpm, at about 400 knots. I don't know enough about the A320 to know if the computers would not let the pilot put a plane into a power dive. I would guess so because these planes are not designed to withstand the stresses at supersonic speed.

4 cups chicken broth
2 cups water
2 tbsp fresh grated ginger
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 cup chopped Spam
1 cup sliced carrot
1/2 cup green peas
1/2 cup chopped scallions
8 oz fresh lo mein or ramen noodles, cooked, rinsed and drained
1. Put the chicken broth in a large pot with the water, ginger and soy sauce, and bring to a boil over high heat.
2. When it reaches a boil, add the Spam and carrot, reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer covered, stirring occasionally until the carrot becomes tender, about 15 minutes.
3. Mix in the green peas and scallions, give the mixture a few stirs, remove from heat, set aside.
4. To assemble, put a portion of the noodles at the bottom of a large soup bowl and ladle half the broth and Spam mixture over it. Use the rest for a second serving. Separate the noodles with a fork to help coat them with broth.
Serve right away.

This is where the heart attack scenario falls apart. The A320 flight controls are not a conventional yoke like you're used to seeing in all the movies. The "joystick" is offset to either the left or right depending on which seat you're sitting in. So if the pilot suffered a debilitating heart attack and slumped forward, he probably wouldn't even touch the flight control. His head would just bang off the instrument panel.

This counters speculation about the FO passing out after the pilot left the cockpit:
The bewilderment of the Lufthansa CEO regarding this incident is telling.
There has been no mention of any faults being revealed via ACARS. If you cut back to AF447 they were referenced very early in the piece.
The Lufthansa CEO would be apprised very early by his own people if any hint of mechanical problems was evident. But nothing so far except extreme bewilderment.
The aircraft was travelling at excessive speed; in excess of VMO. That is acceptable if you are on fire and heading for Nice or somewhere like that. This aircraft remained on track.
Travelling in excess of VMO in a A320 disconnects the AP and triggers the high speed protections which pitch the aircraft up. This aircraft did not pitch up. Which probably means it was being over-ridden by whomever was flying it.
That raises the possibility that the aircraft was hand flown all the way down.
That is ok if you are trying to get to an airport quickly but this aircraft stayed on track and headed directly for the Alps.
This aircraft did not capture any altitudes. Either the descent altitude was set below 6000 feet on the FCU; unlikely but it could have been done in error for the initial descent, or it was being hand flown.
Pulling open des on an emergency descent, provided a lower altitude is set in the FCU, in cruise engages the speed mode which would have captured the cruise mach, which then would have crossed-over to an IAS somewhere on descent. The autothrust commands IDLE and the selected speed is controlled by the elevators.
Therefore only way to achieve max speed is if someone sets it there. There is no reason to do so, and you certainly don't deliberately fly in excess of VMO. The high speed protections would be fighting against you.
Barring some sort of irrecoverable autoflight glitch, the foul play aspect will be increasingly looked at."

No keys for the pilots but a combination lock with a 4 digit or more password that only the pilots know, if said pilot gets jumped there is no key to give up.
The password gets changed on each flight and it is set by both pilots so in fact they are the only two people on earth that know it.

The US solution is to put an armed man aboard, but there really should be two more - both of them in the cockpit.
I've seen a photograph of an old .32 auto pistol, the remarkable thing about which is the "Empire Airways" moniker engraved on the bottom of the magazine floorplate. Evidently back then, even the British considered it not unwise to allow their flight crews (probably in a flying boat in this case) to carry firearms. Setting aside the issue of whether this is an adequate cartridge for the job (and against passengers screened for the carriage of guns and obvious knives it probably is), it seems quite a sensible policy.
Take out the Sky Marshal and the plane is yours, but to take out the Sky Marshal, both pilots and the chief purser is a harder "ask".

Geez, these companies could hire a few Ace commenters to shore up their security.
Solution: The 2 pilots and flight attendants have the pass code. That pass code can be manually stopped by either of the 2 pilots. The 2 pilots have a second code, only known by them, if one of them goes rogue, the other pilot can gain access with the 2nd code and it can't be manually stopped.
Would somebody who was depressed go out in this fashion, doubtful, which is why the religious angle has to be high on the list of possible motives.
