Keyboards I keep fairly low generally speaking. They should provide background fill and tone. We used to have two guitars on sundays. They were mixed just short of exactly the same level. Slight edge to the guy who would actually play the guitar solos. To me, you should be able to easily pick the guitar out of the music, but it shouldn't overwhelm. Quick rules of thumb for a noob?
Always start with the EQ flat. Whatever the board is set to is wrong, unless it's a permanent house board that hasn't been moved. Guitar amps can overpower small systems. If the guitars overwhelm the first few rows, turn the amps around backwards. Keyboards can have an amp or not. Most have a 1/4" stereo plug for an out. A flat EQ is always your friend. Well, that's it for "Top Gear." May and Hammond can't carry that show and there's no replacing Clarkson.
Posted by: otho at March 24, 2015 10:48 PM (tBSrv) I'm wondering if Clarkson even wants to do the show anymore. I've been watching the new episodes and they're kind of bland and have lost their edge, kind of like everybody is phoning it in. I daresay it's beginning to resemble American Top Gear. Top Gear could take their act to Netflix, but they won't have access to a multimillion dollar budget that the BBC can provide. Posted by: kbdabear at March 24, 2015 11:01 PM (GrXXa) 110

Messing with the EQ to get each instrument in its own "slot", so that they sound good together. With all of those variables, I guess it's more of an art ... Just going to have fail my way better.
Posted by: ConservativeMonster at March 24, 2015 10:58 PM Oh, ok. With the EQ, if you're not entirely sure what you're doing and assuming there aren't established levels that are working... Try checking each instrument alone first to obtain a nice natural sound. The guitars will be using stage amps and possibly the keys too. You can start by listening to the stage amp by itself without FOH sound and gradually increasing the volume out front to the desired level and try to match the amp sound when you can still hear both clearly. Without knowing much about the EQing and room etc, try starting with a flat EQ and goose the trebs and bass up a bit, leaving the mids alone. Unless you've got a guitar or keys that are particularly top endy or bassy, you can leave the mids alone to start with and clear up the usually muddy tone of FOH by boosting the top and bottom end, then experimenting with the result. Example- sounds brittle? Drop the tops a bit. A bit boomy? drop the bottoms a bit. You may have to increase the mids, depending on the result, with an EQ like "waves"... up-down-up-down-up. But be careful with mids as they tend to give a strong sound, but can sound muddy and a lot of FOH stuff tends to the muddy as default. Watch your trebs don't take you to the edge of feedback and it should be ok. Once you've done the individual instruments, do it again with the whole band. You may have to adjust some more for a well balanced mix. The band may bitch about all this, but you're not experienced and you need time to sort it out. Tell them to STFU and do they want a good mix, or not? Posted by: otho at March 24, 2015 11:17 PM (tBSrv) 182

Sad, because it was looking like they were going to have a crossover
episode with the US Top Gear guys since they had Tanner Foust on earlier in the season. I may be alone in this, but I like American Top Gear. Not more than British Top Gear, but I think they've found their groove. The hosts have a good chemestry, and it's enjoyable to see three American archetypes (goomba, hick and surfer) interact. I like that they've ditched all of the Top Gear baggage and focus just on the challenges with maybe one car review thrown in. I would love to see a US/UK TG crossover. I give Bourdain some due for not throwing us Second Amendment folks under the bus. Which, he has had every opportunity to do.
His episode with Ted Nugent was instructive to him. The one with the shooters in the New Mexico desert, seemed to have solidified his coming to understand the topic, at least to a fair degree for a NYC, former heroin addict douchenozzle. He goes interesting places, puts some very interesting, indigenous foods up on the screen, and tells an interesting tale in the process. I just wish he didn't like muzzie places quite so much. There's other, better foods out there, I'm sure. Frankly, some of the most interesting people are also the biggest pains in the ass. Clarkson, chief amongst 'em. Strong personalities tend towards such polarizing effects. They're not my best friends. I don't look to them for my spiritual guidance. What I watch 'em for, they're good at. What O'Rourke writes, he's the best at. You wanna run over an annoying foodie with a Food Truck, put a hood ornament on the damn thing and aim it at the Pioneer Woman. What Clarkson could produce and what he's very good at are the automotive documentaries he's done, and some fine work on other subjects.
He wouldn't require a big budget nor a multi-show commitment. His "Who Killed the British Motor Industry" is a great example of the solo documentary work that he's done. May and Hammond also excel at those one-man specials. Posted by: kbdabear at March 24, 2015 11:42 PM (GrXXa) 279

Laurie, I think I understand your POV here, but at the same time I think it's a fair question: how much abuse is too much? Don't get me wrong, this producer could be a delicate flower. But OTOH I personally know of too many cases, and have even worked in too many workplaces, where one abusive psychopath was allowed to get away with ANYTHING because they made too much money for whatever organization they were involved with. And from what I've read about Clarkson, he sounds like someone who could be downright cruel and absolutely un-satisfiable with his demands on the show. Just my two cents. For all we know, Clarkson could be another Jimmy Savile. Would love to know more details about what happened there. Posted by: qdpsteve at March 24, 2015 11:58 PM (elbY7) 333

Actually my day was pretty good today. I'm at a trade show. It's one that not exactly a great fit for what we offer so we don't expect a whole lot. But you do meet a lot of interesting people, make good contacts, and often come across leads that you wouldn't find elsewhere so it's still worth going.
Anyway I may have come across one of the coveted Glengarry leads by chance. :-) A guy walks up to the booth whose company provides solutions to big OEMs and it turns out the one technology that they lack is exactly what we provide. And they cover the stuff that we would need to give the customer a complete working system. So a good match for both companies. Furthermore it turns out that they are deeply hooked into one of the exact big industries that we've been trying to break into for several years. And it also turns out that they have big project that needs a solution by May of this year that just happens to be perfect fit for our latest product. Now you never know how these things will pan out - but if I were to dream up a perfect show lead it would look pretty much like this one. So this lead alone probably justifies the entire show. Mark Twain wrote about doing something literary with Joel Chandler Harris and a couple other literary best sellers, and everyone wanted him to do a reading from one of the Uncle Remus books because they were considered to be so wonderful and wholesome, unfortunately Harris had a terrible fear of speaking publicly and was awfully shy, and begged off reading them for the kids.

Here's another thing that irks me about public education...
Some people in this profession really need some humility. Our district superintendent constantly sends out emails telling us how noble we are and how we are "rock stars". At the beginning of the year, she even honored our veterans and then, not two minutes later, as she closed her remarks, she told us that she could not think of a more noble occupation than teaching. Seriously? I remember once, when I was on active duty, our first sergeant gave our safety brief and warned us not to go to the airport for vacation in our uniform. He said, "Nobody owes you shit." Now I'm not one thousandth the American hero that man is, and I loved that he could show so much humility. That he could do so much for his country and still believe that nobody owed him anything was genuinely awesome. To leave that profession where humility reigns supreme and come to one where so many people commit egregious autofellatio to convince themselves that they are the greatest things since sliced bread is disheartening. And I figure humility would chop some of these unionite thugs in shitholes like Chicago and Madison down to size and remind them that they are not the end all, be all of heroism. /rant Posted by: planeman at March 25, 2015 12:20 AM (yOGKC) 400

Usually they find out that they were greatly mistaken. See, Paula Zahn leaving Fox News Channel for CNN. She left FNC for CNN. CNN fired Greta to make room for Paula. My best guess is that DIABLO is a synonym for RINO but I'm prepared to be wrong. 6 hours ago Link To Comment Subotai Bahadur Democrat In All But Label Only. It is a less politically correct [but more accurate] formulation that came around at the same time as RINO. Right now it is dead on accurate as a description of what I used to call the Institutional Republicans. After they functionally merged with the Democrats immediately after the election; after a game designed only to deceive their own voters and voted to both ratify and to fund Obama's claimed power of rule by decree after they promised to fight it during the election, after they rolled over and raised the debt ceiling again [and technically it ran out again after the temporary raise, but they have agreed to ignore it until the 3rd quarter of the fiscal year], after their dead silence on the almost daily abominations coming out of the Obama administration . . . show me a difference in policy between the Democrats and the DIABLO's nee "Republicans". I've posted it before a couple of times, but I am such a wordy bugger that it is fairly easy to have missed it in the flood. As someone who LOVED Top gear...
Clarkson needs to retire. And that means the death of the show. Dude has always had a nasty side and I doubt it's going to get better, not at his age and the way he's steered his life. He's rich, he can play all he wants in his retirement. May and Hammond can do train documentaries and radio shows or whatever. They're rich, too. I hope someone else comes up with a new idea for a good, funny car show, and by "new" I mean "not a cheap ripoff of Top Gear, and for God's Sake not Motor Trend (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)" sorry I nodded off there for a second. I know I've said it before, but TG America *could* have been a good show, it just wasn't. It wasn't that funny, the jokes were all kind of the same, and it was pretty much "what New York thinks of Middle America, which isn't what it is." To continue a battle that's raged since the early days of radio, it probably should have been an LA show. Despite CA's draconian eco-regulations, LA has a massive car subculture. And, IMHO it's only human and a certain level is expected from big stars. If I ever get to be the screenwriter I want to be, and I meet Mila Kunis, I'm not going to be stupid and ask her for work, because I acknowledge that for both a lot of professional and social reasons, that's just not my place. But if OTOH I find out Mila gets her kicks dumping her breakfast on the floor and making her personal assistants lick it up for her, then obviously a line has been crossed somewhere. Once when I was in a restaurant, in the booth behind me were a group of 4 twenty somethings. One was a teacher, the rest were not. The teacher was going into the only too familiar song and dance about how rough teachers have it. "We are underpaid. We have to do work after hours without extra pay. We spend our own money on stuff for work." For every whiny statement she made her friends responded that they too: 1. were paid about the same as her, but had to work more months per year. 2. had to work after hours without extra pay, because that's what happens when you're on a salary. 3. had to buy stuff for work with their own money. One of the most annoying things in education is the way so many teachers view themselves as victims. Everyone has it tough. Posted by: nerdygirl at March 25, 2015 12:41 AM (kGrwF) 448

It's not particularly noble! It's a job. An accountant can go to his job, which does not receive much acclaim, and be happy with playing his small yet meaningful part in the world everyday. So can insurance agents, and tax attorneys, and civil engineers and so on. Why can't teachers? Why is the praise so necessary? I will go to work tomorrow at 7. I'll give a fifty minute lesson on some tiny part of history multiple times. Some kids will pay attention, take notes and remember the key points. Some won't. Some will continue earning a passing grade, and others won't. I'll remind a few kids to follow certain school rules and I'll get an idiotic, juvenile attitude from a few of them. I'll attend a brief staff meeting and I'll be home by 4:30. My life will never be in danger. I like my job. I like talking about history. I like helping other people understand these concepts better. That makes me happy enough. I don't need ceaseless public acknowledgement of what a terrific human being I am. That's not why I picked this field, and I'm a bit creeper out by my colleagues who seem to crave that attention. Posted by: planeman at March 25, 2015 12:41 AM (yOGKC) 451

Planeman, good comments. In times past, one might have guessed that the fulsome and constant worship of school teachers as a class might have been "psychic income" to replace the income they didn't get (teachers were not well paid, and most had second jobs or at least summer jobs). But, uh ..... at least in places like CA, they are very well paid now - by comparison to private school teachers, in comparison to comparable jobs in the general economy. And I don't think those stats even really take into account the non-salary benefits (incl. job security). So why the worship now? Dunno. Prolly just part of the overall degradation that's taken place in education. Vastly more money. Vastly higher numbers of "advanced" degrees of very dubious value or relevance. And ... In a near west suburb of Chicago, I was invited by my GFs daughter to be her veteran in a thing they did for Veterans day. He agreed with everything I was prepared to defend and held the most respectful tribute to Vets than anything I have ever seen in a school, complete with Taps played by a kid hidden behind the bleachers against a student film. They passed out medals to each Vet and stayed in the gym after to ask Vets questions and the kids were into it. Made me realize that there is a lot more support out there than I thought. Hey Horde, just in from bowling. On the real decline in Japanese birth rates, I'm not a statistician, but my feeling is that the population density has gotten so huge, that no one wants to bring kids into a world where your choice of living space is an eight by ten apartment and all your transportation options are train, scooter, or by foot. I have no idea what the job prospects in Japan are, so I can't comment on upward social mobility. I think it would be like a lab experiment with rats. At some point in population density, they start eating their own.

For all the teachers out there. I read an article about four or five months ago where they took what was an eight grade final test in the early 1900's and gave it to a twelfth grade senior in today's world. Today's kids would have failed miserably. Math, history, civics, language (both English and a foreign language) were mandatory back then. Now, it's all self esteem. You don't actually need to know anything, you just have to feel good that you don't know anything. This is why four year colleges are salivating. You have to spend your first year in college learning what you should have learned in high school. Makes it a five year degree.

cthulhu, correct. A true "producer" is one whose own money is involved in the making of the show, and that's the kind of producer I'd like to be someday. Why are George Lucas' last three films so godawful execrable? Because Lucas was wealthy enough to pay ENTIRELY for the production of all three of 'em, 100%, so he could literally do ANYTHING he wanted with the story and characters. *That's* a real producer, even though in his case the product ended up FUBAR. Many Americans learned their lesson after Viet Nam. Attitudes of some
people toward the military after that war were pretty bad. After things settled down, people realized that they'd been unfair, and are making sure they don't repeat the mistake. It was very supportive of the military and I know things stick in kids minds even if they don't show it until later in their lives. I know it did for me. Posted by: qdpsteve at March 25, 2015 12:39 AM (elbY7) Some stars are great to work with, others not so much. Back in my radio days, we would get a one hit wonder come to town and be absolute dicks. Demanding all kinds of shit while across the hall a band/performer that used to be huge, hit hard times and was back on an upward trajectory would sit there and talk to you for hours and then invite you to join them for dinner. The whole time thanking you for playing their music and inviting them to play in this great gig. Guess which ones would get their next release played and which one was never heard from again. Lucas is (or was, anyway) a capable director, not great, but not poor either. I'm not sure even just producer of any sort would suit him without serious working constraints, which he'd never tolerate. He has talent in production and design etc, but he has always been prone to persisting with some wacky and/or terrible personal vision that negates what good he can bring to the table. The Apocalypse Now thing is a good example.

Posted by: cm9000 at March 25, 2015 01:30 AM (8zCR+) Most are, but there are some that are dicks. Actually, some of the classic rock dudes that were on their "2nd go around" were the nicest ones. They got humbled by the system and were just happy to be back. Some like Hootie and the Blowfish were always awesome. Nicest guys in the world and would just hang around the station doing all kinds of publicity stuff for us. Harry Connick, Jr was another. He just showed up at the station one afternoon. No record company people, no notice, just stopped by because he was in town on a personal matter. The ladies at the station were very impressed by him. Country is a whole different story. Nashville is totally different than the rest of the music business. If you are a big artist in Nashville and get dropped by your label, you have a much harder time getting re-signed, so the artists have heard the horror stories since the time they arrived in Nashville. Also, in Nashville you move up the ladder slowly. You start as the opening act, move to the 2nd act, then the headliner. You do not headline right after releasing your album. When it comes to awards, you do not win the major awards your first several years, you may get nominated, but you lose. In other genres, a first album can get you the major awards right off the bat. As I understand it, there's something similar to the old 1920s-1960s "studio system" for Hollywood stars, to this day in Nashville for artists. Sometimes the star ExP credit solely means: I want part of my salary to be paid with gross receipts from the film. But, there are some stars who actually do help pay for the work they're doing. Posted by: qdpsteve at March 25, 2015 01:43 AM (elbY7) On TV they do it for a cut of the syndication money which is where the real money comes in. The star takes a smaller salary per episode since they can make 10X that if the series hits the 100 episode mark. Ashley Judd, exactly.
A good example today would be Jim Parsons. I don't wanna know how much he's going to end up making from Big Bang once it goes fully into syndication, but he'll never have to work again. Posted by: qdpsteve at March 25, 2015 02:05 AM (elbY7) 595

qdpsteve, I dunno. I know that when Nazi Germany signed the non aggression pact with Stalin in the late 1930's, when Germany went to war with Poland, the Communists in England did not want to produce arms because they would be used against the Stalinists. It was a real problem for England until Germany invaded the Soviet Union.
The same was true in Hollywood. Before Germany invaded the Soviet Union, it was "just a European incident and we shouldn't get involved." As soon as German troops crossed the Bug, it was "OMG, we must defeat the National Socialists". After Wilson as the President (The Obama of his time) Socialists and Communists were all the rage. In the US of the thirties, there were undoubtedly more Communists in the US and Britain than there were National Socialists. And there were a bunch of National Socialists. Hollywood has always been far to the left of the American public in general. Posted by: Old Blue at March 25, 2015 02:12 AM (9iR5/) Posted by: Ira Weatheral at March 25, 2015 02:13 AM (qry2M) 600

I just lurk here, but had to jump in. My wife is a first grade teacher here in the school in our neighborhood. She won't toot her own horn, but I will. She teaches our neighborhood kids and cares too much in my mind. Just trying to get some of these parents interested in reading with their kids is a struggle for her. She's out for the rest of the year as she is trying to kick this breast cancer thing and I think her being away from her class is hurting her more than the pain she is in recovering from the double mastectomy last week.

Old Blue, true, but once the leftists lose enough money, most of them get in line. They're ultimately greedheads.
Why was John Wayne allowed to work? Because his films made money. And why is Clint Eastwood still allowed to produce in Hollywood? Because he's a legend, and his films still make money. Thankfully, the American people have always been smart too. They know Hollywood's full of greedy idiots and ignorant ideologues. It's our job as conservatives to keep it that way. One of the reasons I *love* TMZ is because it doesn't kowtow to celebrities at all, really, outside of their (stupid IMHO) tours. It's fitting they only ask them stupid questions, because in most cases that's all they can (barely) handle.
It treats them as what they are: childish lotto winners, because they can pose or smile or look a certain way on camera. That show overall is good news IMHO. There's a layer of smart underneath the dumb. Posted by: qdpsteve at March 25, 2015 02:23 AM (elbY7) 607

That is mainly a tool to get an established name to sign for a series commitment. A show like CSI that changes out nearly its entire cast but remains a money maker is a huge payoff for William Peterson, who has had more than a token involvement in several years. Kelsey Grammar is an executive producer on 'Medium.' He appeared on the show exactly once in 129 episodes but has probably made more on the show than star Patricia Arquette. He's also ExP on several other shows. This site lists him as having a net worth of $60 million. That production company is really paying off considering how little of his time it likely occupies. Again, no worries....it just touched off a story. God knows it doesn't take much -- I have to Work Hard to stay off the Lists of Damnation.

OK, so......any homeowners out there.....
These are close to the greatest thing since sliced bread. If you look at it and think, you'll go through "silly, useless toy", "stupid, but it might be an issue", "what a serious issue to dress-up in such a silly way", "these could really be handy", and "genius!" My housecleaners HATE them because they rat the housecleaners out for sloppily dumping water under sinks. http://tinyurl.com/or9vsfg Posted by: cthulhu at March 25, 2015 04:08 AM (T1005) 675

Too many "experts" with opinions is one of our biggest problems in this country. Simply having credentials does not make a person an expert on a subject. Just about anyone can sleep through half of their classes and cram their way to a D. Even at Harvard, if their parents are rich enough. To Republicans:
Stop It Now! I realized my blind devotion to the democrats after 30 years of voting yellow dog ballot down and voted for McCain in 2008. I kept hoping someone would stop TFG and voted for Romney in 2012. Watching this instant bashing of the first person to declare is making me sick. Your lack of cohesiveness will be your downfall. If you have a common goal in taking the country back stop the Donner Party crap. That is all. *** still hoping for an American comeback. The Republicans doing the bashing ain't here, as far as I've seen. At least, I don't think so. I haven't seen a whole lot of negativity, but maybe there's some stuff going on during the day I don't have time to read. Most of us are mad as hell at the GOP, and I'm even registered as an Independent these days, but push comes to shove, I'm voting against whoever's most likely to thwart the Democrat agenda. The flight 9525 cockpit voice recorder being "damaged" smells fishy. I suppose it could be true, but I am so distrustful of all of the Islamic-soft countries around the world that I will remain skeptical and wait for the double-talk to begin.

"The interesting thing about staring down a gun barrel is how small the hole is where the bullet comes out..."
Um, no. I've grwon up around guns, and most of the time they've never looked all that big. But when I had a revolver pointed at my head the muzzle got very, very large. It suddenly looked to be about the size of a train tunnel. I swear I could see down the barrel all the way to the bullet - a hollowpoint semiwadcutter. Ordinarily my vision is not quite that good. One of my favorite P.J. O'Rourke quotes was from Red-Eye. They were discussing Water-Boarding, and the effectiveness of of it. Speaking of Cali Shek Mohamid he said "Torture doesn't work...but water-board him anyways."

Lordie, the private school article is almost two years old and they just noticed it? Larry Correia savaged it pretty well over here:

Miley Cyrus is, unfortunately, a real voice for her generation. This is a generation that is actually going out of its way to celebrate being stupid, uneducated, and barely literate. I love the whole phonetic spelling, it's so "edgy" and KeWl. It's so sad to witness this burgeoning dark age of the arts, and it is artists like Miley Cyrus that are at the forefront of this debasement. She is just a despicable hack devoid of any creativity, inspiration, or soul. She is the personification of banal.
