I see Angeline Jolie had more surgery. Good for her. She has put the
welfare of her young children before everything else and knows as their mother only she can raise them best. -- She was getting slammed in the last thread over this decision. She watched her mom die from cancer. Her genetic testing told her she had a high probability of the same fate, so she took proactive measures. She may be cuckoo in other aspects to some people, but I would've made the same decision if my circumstances were hers. It would be terrifying to live with wondering when that cancer time bomb was going to go off. Posted by: Lady in Black at March 24, 2015 08:56 AM (c+7B8) 116

Exactly. It reminded me of a Russian Orthodoz baptism I attended where they repeated everything three times, including the questions they ask the godparents. "Do you renounce the devil and accept Jesus Christ?" "Yes" "Do you renounce the devil and accept Jesus Christ?" "Yes" "Do you renounce the devil and accept Jesus Christ?" "Yes" And so on. Hopefully, if Cruz or Walker get squeezed out of the nomination so the establishment is able to establish Jeb as the nominee, Cruz and Walker will have the courage to combine and run as a Cruz/Walker ticket on a different party. They would get far more votes than anybody will expect, and if it results in a dem win-as we are constantly cautioned, well, at that point what difference does it make? Would president Jeb really be so preferable?

If you haven't read Dick Morris's piece on Hillary Can't Type, do. http://bit.ly/1CLpbuU it's a doozy. He also talks about Slick Willy. Bill can't type either. When I wrote his 1995 State of the Union Speech, I typed it on an IBM Selectric that the White House dug up from the basement. He told me that he didn't want me to put it in the official computer system, because then his staff would see it. So, he carefully copied every word in his distinctive left hand penmanship. I still have a copy of it. Then he pretended that he had written it himself. The Clintons have figured out every which way to avoid disclosure of what they want to keep private. Are there actually people who care what Charles XYZ Cooke has to say? Doubtful.
Ted Cruz is a very affective public speaker. An apparent oddity for Republicans. But for President now? It would be nice if the Republican would have candidates with a record of political accomplishment. Gee, that leaves Walker and Bush (which has a familiar sound!). How dare those students wear red t-shirts to Cruzies' event. Are they communists? On no, students make political statement at political event. How childish? What? Well, whadda ya know; the labor theory of value applied to philosophy. Angela Davis worked very hard on her social justice stuff, so it *must* be worth a lot. Clearly, it's only being held down by a conspiracy of the white man to deny justice. I have no response to that. It honestly never struck me to apply Marxist economic theory to philosophy itself. I think most people agitating for a governor have a specific governor in mind (or maybe 2) and just don't want to say, "I want so-and-so, because he's my candidate."
I do *like* gubernatorial experience. That's a plus in the columns of Rick Perry, Bobby Jindal, Susana Martinez, Scott Walker, Chris Christie, and Jeb Bush. But it's just one plus, and the negatives can easily outweigh it. See also: Chris Christie and Jeb Bush. At the moment, I would vote Perry (based on record) over Cruz or Walker. Cruz and Walker are very, very close in my opinion, so I'm not sure which one comes in second. I would say "it's a tie" but at some point I may have to pick one over the other, and I'm not sure which one I'd pick yet. But those three are my front-runners, and well ahead of the rest of the pack. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at March 24, 2015 09:36 AM (kff5f) 226

Yeah, it's still way early, but being first out of the starting gate gives him an opportunity to prepare the battlespace for '016. Richard Fernandez/Belmont Club explains why the Left and the GOPe reacted so strongly to Cruz's announcement speech yesterday:
"His 'Imagine' speech seemed calculated to ridicule every Leftist shibboleth with predictable effect. The Left lost no time characterizing him as aChristian bigot, a patriarchal supremacist, an uneducated, crazy, anti-poor, anti-abortion 'uppity loudmouth' besides being that supreme abomination, a White Latino. If there's some sacred cow in the Leftist canon Ted Cruz has left undefiled, he will soon enough defile it. That's the plan..... The intellectual establishment has predictably taken the bait. Bearded so openly, they have sneered and they snorted and cast aspersions down like ordure from their high towers upon the rabble beneath. That's exactly the expected response and they've only confirmed Cruz's message....Ted Cruz wanted the aristocracy to show its upturned face and that, it has done." I confess that I like Cooke for the most part. He is a good voice for the movement. But he comes of as the educated person who is so much better than you - and he tries to assert that point by bashing Palin and Cruz and comparing them to Joel Osteen.
By the way, what did Joel Osteen ever do to Cooke. He's not my kind of pastor - but he is an effective speaker who has built up a following and preaches good things. I'm a simple Catholic, but even I will stop and listen to Osteen on occasion. Why the Osteens of the world bother the likes of Cooke - I cannot tell. I think Cooke is better than this. Just come out and say you don't like Cruz, his style, his "extremism" or what. But saying he needs to speak to people and not at people is a pointless and meaningless comment. "Western Civ was nice.." This Chick writes that Ibn Kaldun should be studied more in Philosophy Class, and that no ideas are better than others. Ibn Kaldun had the idea that Islam was better than Christianity and Judaism because a Muslim could kill for his religion with the blessing of Islam while Christians and Jews could not. Ideas like Ibn Kaldun's would have created a culture which would not have tolerated anyone insulting the dominant religion. She should try that in Saudi Arabia.

"Cooke should stick to doodling 'Jeb 2016' on his trapper keeper." I love this false equivalency, any criticism of Ted Cruz is tantamount to an endorsement of Jeb Bush. FWIW, I agree with pretty much everything Cooke said. Even when I see eye-to-eye with Ted Cruz (which is more often than not), I personally find his style to be very grating and off-putting. A lot of people seem to like Cruz's style, so the only thing we can do is to see how it plays with the Republican electorate over the next year.
