<i>NBC released a piece about how 401(k) plans aren't "fair" and that "only the rich can retire."</i> there have been a ton of these in the last couple years. Too many not to be a concerted effort. Generally someone will lament the lack of defined benefits plans without mentioning that they locked you into your company, in a world where companies are no longer loyal. So, through no fault of your own, you can easily lose a company defined benefits plan. And then I love how the solution seems to always be SS, again! Some more.LOL. I already put effectively 14% of my paycheck into the government plan that I may or may not ever see. I'm not looking for more. Posted by: Lea at March 23, 2015 11:01 AM (lIU4e) 50
Why would NBC be hitting on 401K plans? Because Obama wants to kill them and replace them with a new government sponsored welfare program.
Just look how good SS is. At least with a 401K you have to make your own contributions. The only thing not fair in the 401K program is the articially low cutoff amount for the so-called rich. http://bit.ly/1GLhxji Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at March 23, 2015 11:01 AM (wlDny) 51
Obviously, they're trying to prepare the space for the Govt to seize those assets "for fairness." I read a portion of the article. They say some crud how the 401k was never meant to be a vehicle for your full retirement. I call BS. That is the way it was presented. I put in when it was first available 25 years ago. The company did a match to a certain percent, but the rest was mine. I have a substantial amount in it now, and I am retired. It is a fall back in case I need it. My pension is covering my needs right now. Mainly because I have always planned for a rainy day. That's why I have so much in the 401K. Posted by: Bruce at March 23, 2015 11:02 AM (8ikIW) 52

All that lovely money sitting there (really sitting there, unlike SSI), just being wasted on the people who earned it? That's like catnip to liberals. A frank expropriation would probably start The Revolution, so my guess is that they'll require a certain percentage of each 401(k) to be held in government bonds (aka toilet paper - Venezuelans, at ease - it's a figure of speech). Similar situation: Prop. 13 in CA, a constitutional amendment that capped the rate of increase of property taxes. The state is broke, and undoing Prop. 13 (which does generate some injustices, in truth) would free the Reds to kick property owners in the balls, as they always yearn to do, and use the money to buy more votes, which they also yearn to do. Nope. Not from the angle of that story, anyway. The story centers on how 401(k)s have "failed" because "the average amount in a 401(k)" is approximately 18k. The story then immediately says "Oh, if you look at just people near retirement age, the average is higher" (well, duh), but that's not good enough (apparently) because you need millions of dollars to retire. So "only the rich can retire" and "the working-class have to work until they die" (yes- that's at least an approximate quote). So, no, it's setting the space to *expand* Social Security, and take away those "unfair" 401(k)s. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) - TrueCon at March 23, 2015 11:04 AM (kff5f) 61

The vision of retirement the "retirement advisers" are selling is one wherein you do all that stuff you wanted to do as a 20-something, but had to defer because "your career got in the way." So you should go on multiple cruises ever year, and buy an RV (on credit, natch), and "travel the world" and so forth. Me? 196 I saw a study a while back that said that a large portion of retirees don't have their house paid for when retiring. They probably took an equity loan to go on vacation.
What this tells me is that like so many things in life, there is a barbell in the data. Many people save for retirement responsibly, and there is a chunk of people who don't care, and expect everybody else to pay for their mistakes. Posted by: Vashta Nerada at March 23, 2015 11:44 AM (2ePOO) It's kind of like the lottery: a tax on people who can't do math, aka a stupidity tax. As for people who expect everybody else to pay for their mistakes, experience shows that their calculation is probably correct. It comes down to this: some people's sole purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others. It's important that some people get greased for making stupid mistakes, and that we close our ears to the bleating about how they're suffering. For many of them, much like people on Death Row, that is probably one of the few contributions they ever made to society: to show others what NOT to do. First off, this whole "retirement" thing is something that would be seen right out of the Frankfort School.
It came from Bismarck, who was co-opting the socialists in Germany. He set the retirement age at 65 because few people made it to 65 then, when the average age at death was mid-forties. Posted by: Jay Guevara at March 23, 2015 12:09 PM (oKE6c) 275

Whoops, forgot to answer this. It was a decent film, I haven't read the books but supposedly the movie is better. But I'm not running out to see the sequel, will wait for cheap theater. The problem with Hollywood latching onto a genre when it makes money, is that these films start to blend together. I keep mixing up visuals in my head from both Insurgent and The Giver in my head. But it seems to me people who contributed to to 401K program have, in
effect, entered a contract with the government. Breaking that contract seems criminal. But I guess there's nothing new about the government taking criminal action. Yep. The government pushes something, and then when people do it, they get penalized for it, as the government moves the goalposts after the fact. For example, "we've got to encourage purchase of fuel-efficient cars!" A few years later, "Oh, fcuk, gasoline tax revenues are down. Now we'll taxes mileage instead." Or here in CA, "We've got to encourage solar power!" A few years later, "Oh fcuk, the utilities aren't making as much money (and therefore neither are we). We've got to tax solar power!" Too late for the Cruz party but-
I notice that the topic drew out all the usual mobys and "Concerned Christian Conservatives"- that's a good sign. They're scared of Cruz. Second - go back and look at Ronald Reagan's run in 1980. The exact same things were said about him- unelectable too radical too far out of the mainstream etc That are said about Cruz. The ball is in Cruz's court. He can win if he presents himself correctly. We'll see. My big question is- Which Republican will try to play a John Anderson-type spoiler should Cruz get the nomination? That's the way the GOPe and Dims and Our Betters tried to hamstring Reagan. I betting on Jeb. His whole fuck the base routine had the smell of John Anderson-3rd Party about it. 1) TFG isn't running, in which case "who is in the White House" is vastly less important than who he's running against.
Our candidate should run against him anyway, just the way the Reds ran against W. Make EVERYTHING about Obongo. Make their candidate either embrace Obongo, or reject him, but force him to make the choice. Either way will fragment support for the candidate. And if Obongo steps into the fray to defend his record (although how he could do that beggars the imagination), all the better. He'll upstage the Reds' candidate by doing so. Perfect. Social Security can be portrayed as a scam used by the democrats to take money from black men(who pay in all their lives and die young) and give it to white women (who live disproportionately longer).
Blacks are convinces the deck has been stacked against them from the beginning by the white man, so we affirm that belief by saying that if there had been mandatory Individual Retirement Accounts, black families would have inherited hundreds of thousands each over the years. We hammer the theory that the accumulated wealth of black families would be far greater today if the democrats hadn't been using them as chumps all these years. @130 The 401(k) is nice because "free" money (employer contribution), but a Roth IRA might be better- it should be harder for the Gov't to steal it.
------------------- Roths are getting more attention from the government, though. Lib politicians have been claiming that they're exclusively used by "the rich", and suggesting that existing accounts be taxed. That's in addition to the taxing that's done before the money is even put into the Roth account. Doesn't stop me from using a Roth for my own retirement account. But it does make me wonder from time to time if I should switch out of it. Posted by: junior at March 23, 2015 12:59 PM (UWFpX) 520

"Fire in a theater".
Always wondered about that. If indeed there was a fire, wouldn't you shout it out? Was there some sort of epidemic of 'fake' calling of fire that happened back in the past?
