39 As far as Vic pointing out the supposed "Conservatives" as labeled by the press in that article, this is exactly why I've been saying that we need to drop the Conservative label. In the public eye, it's been associated with people like Rove and the Bushes, and we won't shake that association for at least a generation. Better to just ditch it and get something new.

Just like the Lefties revived the Progressive label after they'd done decades worth of damage to their misappropriated Liberal label, we'll be able to go back to it some day - if we want to.

For now, something new would be better.

That's a very solid point, and not one I'm going to contradict. I was just trying to point out how labels get appropriated, run into the ground, retired, and recycled later. Conservative needs to be recycled, it's got too much baggage attached thanks to what would properly be called Progressive Republicans, if the labels hadn't been switched.

96 Another question: Has winter been arriving later too, or just lasting longer?"

Longer. As Vic points out, our fall plants have been chugging along just fine.

I'm talking about a longer term change here, though - it's been since the aughts that I've had the guys in full mode by St Patty's day, and we're now going over half a decade as such.

You'd think someone interested in "SCIENCE" would notice...

Posted by: anon a mouse at March 20, 2015 08:17 AM (KnbYp)

97 It certainly would be instructive, now that we're all party-less conservative leaning political nomads, to have a consensus opinion on the hot button issues of the day.

When a candidate comes on bended knee to the horde, asking for support, what position does he take to properly pander?

On immigration, has anyone defined what the word "amnesty" means? We can't simply say "follow existing law", because than entails kicking in doors at 2am and dragging mothers away from their children (which looks bad on the evening news). It would be good to have a well written position on what true conservatives want.

On healthcare, certainly everyone wants Obamacare repealed, but that's not a position. Never in the history of the U.S. has the government been able to give citizens free shit and then turn around and take it back. Those who think this is an option just aren't being serious. We need a conservative plan on what is going to replace Obamacare.

On defense, some are taking the position that patriotism can be gauged by how much we spend on the military. Others know that at some point, enough is enough. It's hard to make the case of being a budget hawk while handing out blank checks. We should nail this down so that voters know where we're at.

On Social Security, for decades the holy grail of the conservative side of the aisle was a plan to privatize SS. If this is still the plan, it could be marketed in such a way as to gain the black vote. Of course, our side needs to agree on plan first.

It's hard to sell an ideology without giving people examples of what applying this ideology would mean in practical terms. It's even harder to gain recruits if the supposed leaders of the party can't agree on what conservative plan looks like.

The basic ideas will be born in places like this - smart military blogs. They will filter up to widely read websites, then to the think tanks and into the hands of congressional staff.

It may be time for newly independent writers to lay out in print just what the fuck they want.

100 I'm not buying that "meteorological" Spring thing, not for a moment. Figures lie and liars figure; some statistics prof somewhere is trying to do what arithmeticians always do. Thumb on the scale. I go with Farmer's Spring, which has to do with the weight of my boots after I walk my field.

Only two weeks out from prime snowplow season, I've been coerced (with money) into two driveway re-grades and re-stonings so far this week. Rainy season hasn't even started yet (I complain bitterly); it's still the Drochte of Marche, and you'll be up to your hips in Swich Licour, whan that Aprille with his Shoures Soote... But no, they're throwing money. OK, I can catch.

It was 65 one day last week, and I went ahead and threw in a row each of peas and lettuce just to say I'd done something. They'll survive anything so I ain't a-skeered. Just at the margins, though -- in case I have to re-plow after the mudstorms. Over in the corner, under the snow, I found fresh celeriac up and in foliage. What a hopeful little plant. Parsley and celery, all in one. A garnish for Saint Patrick's, and stuffing for Christmas.

The idea, I presume, was to divide the seasons up into 3 equal months each. You can't really do that unless you begin Spring on Mar 1. Summer June 1, Fall - Oct 1, and Winter - Dec 1.

I think the 3 equal months thing has been thwarted by the longer Winters and shorter Spring.

107 Here in western NY it was a bit different this winter.

We were wearing shorts on Christmas Eve. The whole holidays week was abnormally warm. A bad snowstorm had hit South Buffalo in November but that was very localized.

Then, January and February were bitter cold, far more than usual . February was the 3rd coldest on record and snow was countable all 28 days! (keep in mind, many of those days it was a few flakes in the middle of the night)

Then, March came in like a lion but quickly went lamb-like on the 8th and has stayed there ever since.

111 but somehow it's the "42nd warmest winter on record"

Well, to be fair there is some truth - absolute "low" temps have been higher (and lower) thus driving some data sets.

The problem is, of course, that one must ignore (sorry - "adjust") the new lower "highs" to get the proper warming trend...

However, the real problem arises when this false temperature spread becomes the basis for action - we're advised to handle tasks earlier and earlier, with expectations at the back end based on "warming" when it isn't.

It's resulting in a most bizarre dance - USDA guy says one thing, then winks as if to say "I don't really mean this"

It's bizarre.

When I went to a Latin Mass a while back, they had them at the door along with the prayer books and you could borrow one for the service. Trouble is, that "data' is what drives delivery dates of supplies and materials, timing, insurance, and finance.

For example, head to your favorite big box "home" store - I promise that you'll find some inventory of (still) unusable plants and flowers - and it's not because they want to order goods just to have them die off, it's because HQ looks at the new temp maps and says "Hey, let's get flowering plants to that Virginia location by the 1st week of March!"

1. Immigration. It does not require dragging mothers from their children, because there is no such thing as an "anchor baby", it's a fiction created to enable the illegal immigration crisis to be a crisis. The ethical thing to do is repatriate the entire families to their nations of citizenship, that those nations can have a second chance to live up to their obligations to their citizens. We wouldn't want to deprive our Latin American allies of tax revenue, would we? Of course, we don't have the manpower or resources to do that right away, so there is one small compromise I'd offer: If you self-deport within 6 months, you may (upon exiting the country) apply for immigration like any other new applicant, without past (immigration-only) offenses being counted against you.

2. What do you replace a fire with when you put it out? The constant carping that we have to have a plan to replace Obamacare is disingenuous. The only "free stuff" is the expansion to Medicaid. That could temporarily be retained while the rest of the bill is scrapped. Replacements can be considered when we take the first step to solving the problem, which is "if it hurts when you do that, stop doing that".

3. Defense spending should be policed carefully for waste, and expensive and underperforming programs such as the F-35 should be subjected to review, and competitive bids be considered for a production-ready replacement thereof.

4. On Social Security, the way you sell privatization is (IIRC) Peru, which privatizes theirs. Despite a Per Capita GDP that is 1/5 of ours, their payout is half of ours. This vastly outperforms our system, and it has been in use for decades, so it's got a proven track record.

5. What does a country that does this look like? Housing is cheaper and jobs are more plentiful for American citizens, given the laws of supply and demand not being distorted by the immigration issue. Americans now have greater power to negotiate wages and more money to spend, since they're working. The economy starts surging. Meanwhile, Congress continues devising a fix for the medical system that will address long-running problems like costs, which have already started to mitigate for similar supply/demand reasons. The DoD has to put its expensive "all-stealth all-the-time" focus on hold and go with proven technologies for a few years, while the budget gets sorted out. Social Security is no longer a looming catastrophe, and citizens in retirement get more.

What's not to love?

While I realize that the number of alt-history sci fi fans are pretty small, I guarantee that if there were a conservative Freedom Party, the media would be certain to let everybody know about the Turtledove books. In fact, I would bet money that Hollywood would produce a miniseries or movies based on the Harry Turtledove books. Focusing first on immigration, I agree whole heartedly that we need to end anchor babies, but I think it would be impossible to sell the retroactive portion to the people. They would hear sob stories about teenagers who have never seen Mexico, speak perfect English, grew up just as any other kid being forced out of "their" country. I don't believe it's politically possible.

However, I do believe that eliminating anchor babies in the future can be part of a deal. Also, having the ability to deport undesirables quickly and easily, as opposed to the long, drawn out process we have today. My primary goal in any deal would be to limit illegal aliens to a permanent resident status instead of citizenship. We might even give them a "road to citizenship" that would be perceived by the public as fair - roughly double the time legal applicants wait. So, if an illegal registers for permanent residency, they would be eligible for citizenship in about 20 years.

Politics is the art of the possible.

synagogues. Then it's like a doily or a kerchief or some such. "

Women also cover their heads with a black or white lacy kerchief
(called a mantilla, I believe) in more traditional Catholic churches.
When I went to a Latin Mass a while back, they had them at the door
along with the prayer books and you could borrow one for the service.
It's not required and I didn't, but I was one of the few women there who
didn't have one on. I was also the only woman there in pants. At
least they were nice dress pants. Jeans really would have made me stick
out like a sore thumb.

In other words, they dressed the way Catholics used to dress for
church prior to Vatican II. Now, at most parishes, they come in wearing
any old thing.
