1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, March 17, 2015, Saint Patrick's Day. Saint Patrick was a 5th-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Known as the "Apostle of Ireland", he is the primary patron saint of Ireland, along with Saints Brigit and Columba. There are many legends of Saint Patrick. The Shamrock, which is, now associated with St Patrick's day is said to have originated with St Patrick when he used a three leaved shamrock to illustrate the holy trinity. Another legend, which is dubious at best, is that he drove the snakes out of Ireland. Scientists maintain that following the glacial period Ireland never had any snakes. In any case, the holiday in the US has become known more for drinking and partying than any religious overtones. In fact, the Irish bar here in Charleston will be packed for blocks around. You would be lucky to get within a half mile of the place.

2 Supposedly the Iranians have raised an issue with the 47 letter posted as an open letter to Iran.


The Associated Press, citing a senior U.S. official, reported that the letter, which was signed by 47 of 54 GOP members, first came up in negotiations on Sunday and was raised again Monday in discussions led by Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif.


IOW this is most likely BS from Kerry's minions at the direction of the Choom.

What the hell is "appeared to confirm"? And Petraeus did not plead guilty to giving his mistress classified material. He pled guilty to improper handling. When what he should have done is hide it in his socks.

I view this as a purely political move. Yeah, that is a nice part of the State but extremely expensive cost of living, primarily due to real estate values.

But it really isn't my part of the state, I am about 2.5 hours drive away from there.

LOL, IIANM Charleston is the only colony settled for purely economic reasons. It was originally chartered to the Lord Proprietors because they thought they could get rich off using slaves to raise sugar cane like the Caribbean colonies.

I would suggest that they explore the possibility of making E85 only engines and seeing if that would put them in compliance. After all, E85 is only 15% gasoline so if the car gets 10 miles per gallon of fuel, instead of dividing that 10 miles by one gallon, divide by the 0.15 gallons of gasoline in a gallon of E85 to get 66.667 miles per gallon of gasoline.


E85 has an octane rating of 110 so it ought to be possible to increase the compression ratio of their existing engines up to somewhere in the 14:1 to 20:1 range and boost them up to 1000 horsepower. Or you could go in the other direction and get 700 horsepower out of a smaller, lighter engine.


In any event, Dodge could make some screaming cars, sell them for serious bucks to people who would be happy to have them and make the corn farmers in Iowa happy. Oh, yeah, the air would also be cleaner.

Ethanol burns cooler than gasoline so you wind up with a different set of combustion products. I believe that you get fewer oxides on nitrogen but more of some other things. I have read that the other things are less harmful but I will defer to somebody with more knowledge of chemistry and medicine.

As far as green lasers being stronger, most of the stronger lasers you can buy on the market are, in fact, green. That's more due to the materials used being cheaper than any inherent advantage to the color itself, IIRC.

This is, more and more, how business is done anymore. Big Government and Big Business collude to come up with a scheme to squeeze the public for more money. Business rolls it out, Government makes it mandatory, both sides rake in the money and laugh all the way to the bank while we get robbed blind.

The Left always sees the business part and wants to assign them all of the blame, since in their backwards worldview working for the government automatically makes perfect angels of people, but the crony businesses wouldn't be able to pull it off without the politicians (in both parties) that encourage, enable, and profit from their behavior. They also wouldn't survive long in a free market, as unused to legitimate competition as they've become.

MTBE was an additive mandated by CA law to reduce smog. It's highly water soluble. It's a problem for ground water but not so much for surface water.

They listened to big Ethanol and realized that 10% ethanol mix gets less mileage than 100% gasoline, and presto, a stealth increase for the Transportation fund with nobody the wiser.

Just a few extra pennies per fill-up in taxes, but Americans fill up billions of times a week.

Look at the time line. In the 1960s they started taking the lead out of gasoline. The result was lower octane and without the lubrication from lead, the valves started sticking and burning. The auto manufacturers responded by lowering the compression ratios of the engines which made them less efficient and caused them to use more gasoline. Then the Arabs raised the price of oil by a lot. During the scramble to do something, even if it is wrong, a whole lot of schemes were tried including ethanol. A couple of other important factors have been affecting things at the same time. The EPA keeps growing in power for its own bureaucratic reasons and also because it suits the religious views of many deep green atheist progressives. Also the oil industry works very hard to prevent any alternative from gasoline from being widely adopted. They use the EPA as their cat's paw to kill alternatives like CNG conversions.

The main issue with ethanol is that it has to work in vehicles optimized for low octane unleaded gas which requires low compression ratio engines.

Krakauer thinks McCandless was poisoned by a mold that grows on the wild potato seeds he was eating. They know he was improperly storing them.

There's a lot more to the story than the way it was generally reported. The kid was reckless and stupid but he did actually know how to take care of himself in the wild.

Krakaer's conclusion is debatable, but he must be given his due as an expert on the subject. He's investigated it more than probably anyone alive.

251 I went to the Chicago St. Paddys day parade about 30 some years ago. It was an election year. Everything in the parade is either a union float or union walking along holding a sign or a float/walkers for somebody running for election. No bands that I remember, a few kids on a float dancing.

I have a small race car built in 1946 that is powered by a Ford V8 "set up for alcohol." The main issue in that application was the Strombergs icing up. I will not call the class of car by its competition name because it is Fake Irish Day, and I know how you people are about tossing little people around.

It is true, the only way alcohol makes any sense as a motor fuel is in extremely high-compression engines. Without that, it cannot produce as much power as gasoline. Once you raise an engine's compression ratio, it won't run on gas. The compromise is to use a variable compressor supercharger, and a sensor. I am told that a famous south-German U-boat motorenwerken makes such a product.

Initial studies on high-compression antiknock compounds were done by "Boss" Kettering, who said alcohol would do very nicely, and then suddenly reversed himself and endorsed lead. There was widespread rumor that monetary influence was involved. It was quite a scandal, in the 1920's. Insider: Pew Trust.

Bleak, but accurate. The only way Iran would let its nuclear program "idle" for 10 years is if Israel is removed from the planet and the US becomes a Shia Muslim nation.

Jarrett's and her familiar's window of opportunity to do that is the 2 1/2 months between the November 2016 election and noon Eastern January 20, 2017. Any earlier and there would be political hell to pay. Any later and they (hopefully) wouldn't have the military to pull it off.

I haven't been to many places in Charleston. My understanding is that most of the restaurants are outstanding. I have been to Tommy Condon's Irish bar/restaurant. The food is not that great but the atmosphere and live music is great. It is in old Charleston so parking is impossible to find so take a cab. Cabs are very cheap in Charleston.
What I have found most interesting about Charleston is simply driving around old Charleston and looking at the old houses and buildings. A buggy ride for that tour would also probably be nice if the weather is like today. There is also the carrier with old aircraft in the harbor that is a nice tour from what I have been told.
